5-0 out of 5 stars All the Nero Wolfe books are gems ...
I don't understand someone who would think that any of the Nero Wolfe boosk were not good.Of course some are better than others, but frankly, his worst is better than the best of just about anyone (well, Raymond Chandler is an example of someone who you may prefer, but for gods sake, he's a legend).
3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not the right reader
I love Nero Wolfe mysteries and this was very enjoyable. But in my opinion they chose the wrong reader. The narrator sounded very good being Nero Wolfe. But all the Nero Wolfe stories are written from the point of view of his legman, Archie Goodwin. The narrator did not at all sound like Archie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent entertainment

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and intriguing

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a Good Book
Shadow of the Hegemon, like speaker for the dead, is a little disappointing after reading Enders Shadow, and Enders Game. The only reason I believe people read these books, is because they loved Enders Game so much, they cant bear to stop reading the books and reliving the experience over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars ken boire author of Inherit the Tide
Steinbeck's work shows us the grit, pain, tiredness, disappointment, and failure of humanity. He did it by bringing us into a story by telling it to us.Secondary to that he showed us the story.Yes, he was a great story teller and he obviously had a voice of his own.Interesting thing is his books made great movies but they still remained top sellers for decades."Grapes", is still up there with the best Amrican writers.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Woe of the Great Depression
Set during the Great Depression, this novel chronicles the life of a family of sharecroppers, the Joads. They are driven from their home in Oklahoma due to the Dust Bowl (a series of dust storms causing severe drought) and hard times. Along with thousands of others who have also lost their land, the Joads decide to move to California with the promise of work and a better way of life. However, once they get there, they find that there is not much work to be found and even if they get work, the pay isn't fair. The Californians they encounter treat them with disdain, calling them "Okies" and fearful that these newcomers might band together and take over the land.
2-0 out of 5 stars Complete misery and no plot
First let me say I'm a Steinbeck fan.I love the majority of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best combination of pace and voice
After sampling many different audio bibles, I pick this one hands done.I like some others voice better, but find when I'm reading along the pace is too slow.Stephen Johnston does a wonderful job of keeping my mind from drifting while I am reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars good

3-0 out of 5 stars Recomendable

It seems to me the recording engineer manipulated the recordings to remove the natural pauses a speaker makes for dramatic effect. Also, I think the engineer sped up the voice.I believe the engineer's goal was to make the recordings take less time, which may have saved a few CDs worth of time for the collection.Unfortunately, the removed pauses not only removes some of the drama in the reading, it also makes listening in general a little more tiresome. On the other hand, you can probably hear everything in about 20% less time because of the engineer's efforts.I've occasionally sped up a recording myself if I thought the reader paused too much, but in this case, I think it was done by a computer - something like, "if pause is greater than .2 seconds, make it only .2 seconds".The problem is that a computer is not an artist.Nonetheless, I plan to listen to these recordings a lot, and I believe they will come in handy with the NVI/NIV dual translation bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tune Your Thinking Skills!
In the _Principles of Efficient Thinking_, Barbara Branden delves into the theory and practice of psycho-epistemology (the habits of thinking), including much material that seems to have been neglected in the Objectivist corpus of late. The material is clear and well-supported with examples, although a bit slow for more advanced students. Most intriguing were her discussions of the multiple levels of focus, common errors of reasoning, the requirements of good definition, and the differences between associational and conceptual thinking. Every thinking person should listen to this tape set at least once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Those That Have Ears
Throughout time the Holy Spirit has worked through individuals to bring humanity closer to the divine. Sometimes this work manifests itself in an individual who is capable of doing great things with the blessings that were given them.Rev. O'Donohue is such a man, and yes he is still a priest.Once a priest always a priest. This like all others works John has done provide simple advice on how to build ones understanding of life, self, and the divine.John's approach to teaching is a `Celtic' approach as old as the stones that make up the many walled fields of Ireland. Many listeners will not be used to the rhythms of Celtic life, and thus they will find John's respectful approach to a subject boring. We saw this fact manifest in the previous reviewers comments. The Celtic approach to life is never direct, and always mindful. It is this first lesson that John teaches the listener without ever addressing it directly that is the most important lesson to learn. This is the lesson of mindful patience.Without this basic life skill we can never progress in our relationship with the divine. Once we have learned this lesson, and listen again to John's lecture we will then be able to understand what he is addressing in his lectures. The real blessing is that each book, or more especially taped lecture has layered teachings. These teachings are revealed only through rereading, or listening to his lecture. This type of teaching, and systematic unveiling of teachings is the heart and Soul of the Celtic approach to teaching anything. So in conclusion, if you are looking to hear, and learn the subject material from a true modern day Christian Bard then John's works are for you.If you are looking for a quick secret to life answers in a book in the form of a milk carton advertisement then perhaps a quick read of one of the many Celtic Spiritual web pages is the ticket for you. As for me, I hope you take the time to sit (metaphorically speaking) at the feet of one of the last Cludee'sleft in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great voice, great content
Spoken audio tapes need to be evaluated not only on the merits of the content, but also the quality of the production -- including the "listenability" of the speaker's voice. Fortunately, this collection of meditative reflections on Celtic spirituality by Irish priest John O'Donohue boasts not only sublimie content, but an aurally pleasing experience as well. O'Donohue's voice is easy for Americans to understand, but filled with enough of an Irish accent to evoke the windswept shores of the Emerald Isle in every word he speaks. He speaks slowly, carefully enunciating each word, which contributes to the meditative aura this recording evokes. And of course, what he is saying is as important as how he says it: and what he talks about is the distinctive and vital living tradition of Celtic wisdom, from seeing the human being as "sculpted of clay" to celebrating the inner landscape of the imagination, to seamlessly weaving Christian and Pagan stories and principles together in a way that ultimately breaks down the barriers of religion to leave only the breathtaking unity of deep mysticism. Finally, O'Donohue's insistence on the role of friendship and relationship in the spiritual life -- as embodied in the Gaelic tradition of the anam cara, or soul friend -- makes this truly a relevant treasury of spiritual insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth listening to again and again.
O'Donohue is wonderful! The subject matter is not only relevant on a day-to-day basis, but also helps one understand their past and the"inner workings" of other people. His explanation and treatmentof death is both informative and helpful for those of us who have lostsomeone we love dearly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for what it is, but disappointing nevertheless
Strobel does a good job of presenting the case for Christ. By interviewing various scholars ("expert witnesses"), he builds that case in the same way he would build a legal case to take to court. He anticipates each objection, each piece of countering evidence, that the opposing side might introduce, and he deals with these one by one. So far, so good.
3-0 out of 5 stars Hate to lodge dissent
I hate to be a naysayer but as a former agnostic myself I had heard so much good about this book I was anxious to get my hands on a copy. Perhaps it was the buildup that raised my expectations too high. It is not bad for a book of its kind but nothing different from those who have gone before him down this road of apologetics. Many have disagreed with me on this but I do not think it would work well on the serious agnostic or atheist. Many, I think, would consider it an insult to their intelligence. So from the perspective of this Christian reviewer, you might want to look elsewhere for a book to share with friends. This one is helpful as a faith-booster but not a very good faith-inducer in my opinion; fair but no silver bullet of apologetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for new Christians and athiests
If you believe in God but have doubts that Jesus existed, this is a good book for you.If you don't believe in God this is a good book for you....if you go into it with an open mind.If you are dead set that God doesn't exist and don't want to find out other wise then don't read this book.I like this book because it gives many different scholar's views on various subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars hilarious!
this book is written in the form of varies letters written from a evil demon who is advising his nephew on how to be a better and more effectively evil demon,as the nephew is lacking in that department.its very entertaning i think.its done in a playful and interesting way or maybe its just me.read it and see.its not satanic or anything just philosophical satire from my point of view.a good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read classic of the 20th century.
C.S. Lewis is clearly one of the masters of 20th century prose. His theological ideas are very succulent in their purpose and while I may not agree with every doctrinal belief of his, the essence of his message is a very pure one - fulfilment comes only from submitting your will to the Father, through loyal service, dedication, and love (which He very happily returns to you in limitless abounds).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fiendishly funny or frightfully real?
Oh my, what a book this is. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this book. And yet, at the very least, I now have a better feel for what probably is some evil "goings-ons" in my own life. Evil that is so invisible and subtle that I hardly know it's there. Until it's too late. It seems like no matter what we humans may try to do, satan (what I used to call "the force of evil") always seems to have a trick up his sleeve to throw us off kilter and keep us from cutivating our hearts and souls to become better people. This book is truly C.S. Lewis "unplugged" and full throttle. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I agree.
While Terry Goodkind is an amazing author and has held my attention for the first six books of this series, he let me down with this book. Now that statement holds true for the first time I read this book.I have a bad habit of re-reading all the books in the series each time a new book comes out.Another look at this book made me realize that there is a lot of infomation that is necessary to understand the whole story. It gives great insight to who Darken Rahl was and the everyday life of his enemies.I now like this book very much, but still like it least of all the books in the series so far.

2-0 out of 5 stars The worst so far...Pretty Awful actually...
I loved this series- I could not stop reading each and every one of them cover to cover up until this piece of garbage. Its almost like TG handed over his writing to an author of much much lessor quality - like one of those cheesy books based off of a video game like "Starcraft" or something. It is sad.
1-0 out of 5 stars Calling it quits...
Well, I'm done.I made it a little ways into Pillars, and decided my time with Terry Goodkind is at an end.I was very taken with Wizard's First Rule; it was a great fantasy work, and I was thrilled with having added it to my collection. But from there, the story just became dull, pointless, and frankly, just too predictable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best and Most Basic
This will not be a formal review.I found myself with the link available to write one, however, and just could not refrain from making a short stab at it.This set of tapes contains wisdom not just for couples but for anyone, at any time.A comprehensive base of spiritual wisdom drawn from world religions and and the best of thought is condensed into this perspective. Moreover, the suggestions that follow from it are practical and workable. How I wish I had discovered this set of tapes sooner! How I wish it were in hard copy.If you are in need of help, go here. The opening message by Stephen (both he and his wife are conducting the workshop from which the tapes were made) put me off a bit at first, with its quality of incantation.I realize now that this was likely the leading of an opening meditation.Continue.You will not be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Course and Marianne
I have known and known of Marianne Williamson for several years, and know of the inner battles she had until she discovered the Course on Miracles. I believe this book is good for those who have lost sight of our purpose on Earth, and those who may need a swift kick of unconditional love to get them on the right path.Much like Louise Hay, Rayna Gangi, Andrew Weil, and others, Marianne tries to show us that love is possible, necessary, and expected.

3-0 out of 5 stars Frightening and suspenseful, yet too long by half!
Chyna Shepherd, a twenty-six year old young lady, is the product of a deeply disturbed and seriously dysfunctional family. Having had to endure violence, rape, child molestation and a bizarre life of crime with an vodka-soaked promiscuous mother, she has found the best road to survival and safety is passivity and invisibility. When Edgler Foreman Vess, a sociopathic serial killer, invades the home of Chyna's dearest and only friend, Laura Templeton, and brutally slaughters the entire family, this deeply nurtured ability to hide out of sight and out of mind saves Chyna's life. The killer is not aware that there is a guest in the home that night. Laura, savagely raped and near death, is scooped up by the killer and taken to his motor home to be "enjoyed" and mutilated later in the evening. As Chyna cautiously follows hoping to rescue her captive friend, she inadvertently discovers that the killer has also kidnapped a young, innocent sixteen year old girl and is holding her captive "waiting for her to ripen, get just a little sweeter". Now driven by the possibility of elevating her life to a meaning beyond passivity and mere survival, hoping to draw some meaning from the death of her friend, Laura, who has succumbed to her injuries, Chyna resolves to rescue Ariel or die in the attempt.
3-0 out of 5 stars For Koontz fans
Koontz combines suspenseful chapter endings with different narrative points of view in a way that prevents a reader from being just an observer. At the same time, the pace of the tale prevents too much close analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever
i love this book, i'm 26 years old, and i have been doing alot of soul searching, this book has open my eyes about myself, how i am holding myself back because of all the stories i tell myself
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
After reading "The Dark Side of the Light Chasers," I expected the same level of insight in this volume.Instead, I found a smorgasbord of various religions that didn't really seem to do justice to any particular one.I realize this book is more self-help and self-discovery oriented, but the spiritual overtones were too strong and too garbled to be of any real help.Ford is a good writer, and she does have some helpful insights on personal care habits, so I give this one two stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical and really made me think!
I was given this book by my therapist, as she felt that I still needed to work through a lot of issues from my past and that this book may help me bring the experiences forward. I can honestly say that it did.
