2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected as Advertised
I ordered this book after reading the rave reviews and the who's who of public school using this format.Nowhere is it advertised or even mentioned that this is a Christian book, espousing Christian dogma and assumptions.I'm surprised this is acceptable for use by Government funded public schools.Furthermore, there is a lot of non-scientific rhetoric in the book that eschews logical debate and exposition.I'm very disappointed and consider this to be false advertising.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works For A Mom Of 8
I have 8 kids, ages 1 though 18.I read this book 6 years ago when I was dealing with 2 year old twins and found it to be very helpful. Since then I have recommended it to many people.Anything that can help mom stay calm and sane when dealing with challenging behaviors is a real winner in my book!

Editorial Review

This is not a collection of encouraging essays on simplicity, nor is it perky advice on how to get by with less. Timothy Miller, a clinical psychologist, sets out to uncover in recent scientific studies the roots of the insatiable appetite of humans. After establishing our instinctual need for More, he pursues its destructive consequences and then he outlines a methodology for transcending the cycle. His infinitely pragmatic advice centers on his elaboration of Compassion, Attention, and Gratitude. Here is perennial wisdom transformed into practical science. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Flawed Tone, but Solid, Livable Strategies
I first read How to Want What You Have many years ago, and I remember being incredibly excited by it. Miller's advice for practicing compassion, attention, and gratitude has stuck with me since. Upon re-reading it, however, I noticed a subtle dogmatic preference for Cognitive Therapy that turned me off just a little. Don't get me wrong, I have loved and used Cognitive Therapy in my own life ever since I discovered it in David D. Burns' Feeling Good. But I've also found other methodologies like Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Behavior Therapy, and Positive Psychology to be scientifically rigorous and just as effective. Whether a function of bias or simply the fact that a lot of progress has been made in these other areas in the 10 years since its publication, Miller's book seems to rely too strongly on Cognitive Therapy-at the seeming exclusion of other strategies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical advise for the hectic modern world we live in
this is some very basic insight to living a simple, content, fullfilling life -- Miller points out, in humorous, interesting ways, the things we already know to be true, but in our haste to live up to marketing hype that surrounds us, we forget.
5-0 out of 5 stars Modernized Buddist Wisdom

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. The author gently helps you pin-point your problem areas and sensitively points you in the right direction (to God). I loved the idea of imagining your mind as a control center and identifying who was really at the controls, then working to put God and you back into the control seat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather weak and superficial
I am surprised by the high ratings of the previous reports, for I found the book to be very superficial. The main point of the book is that authenticity means to take control of your decisions, but it does notprovide any real help about how to achieve this goal. The discussion isvery naive and useless if you really have a problem. It may be of some useif you a strongbeliever, since the author builds a lot on christianvalues.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on learning how to respect/honor self
Neil Clark Warren makes visible the importance of being truthful, not only to ourselves about ourselves, but to be truthful about ourselves to others; only then can we obtain the inner peace and contentment we so desperatelyseek. Within the pages of this book, you will examine your life and learnhow to change the patterns that keep you from the happiness you diserve.Others authors I have read that speak of living an authentic life are Rev.Wayne Muller "How, Then, Shall We Live? and Neale Donald Walsh"Conversations with God Book II". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A profound and moving listening experience
Ground Zero And The Human Soul: The Search For The New Ordinary Life is an impressively presented audio collection of six conversations with Lynn Jericho and Bethene LeMahieu who discuss personal spiritual growth; the ramifications of the September 11th attacks; and various ways to chart a future that rises above fundamentalism, aggression, and greed. A profound and moving listening experience, Ground Zero And The Human Soul is narrated with confidence, reflecting a primary concern with sharing a positive vision for tomorrow. 6 cassettes, 6 hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ground Zero and the Human Soul
Bethene LeMahieu and Lynn Jericho have fashioned a compelling exploration of our individual humanities and the responsibilities we bear in aspiring to a viable, thriving, and compassionate world for ourselves and those who follow. A provocative delineation of the four-fold human being and the three-fold soul provides a basis for nourishing both our uniqueness and our commonality with others as we rebuild from the ruins of personal andglobal trauma to construct a new ordinary life which transcends evil through truth, beauty and goodness. The six audio tapes document the human spirit and its potential while challenging to action those who long for universal justice and peace. ... Well, I have yet to read a book by Dr. Peck that did not leave me grateful. This one is no exception. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not like his other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for doctors?
The stories of real communication in this book will stay with me for a long time.I wish Dr. Remen's examples of listening and being present would be required reading for medical residents and practicing doctors, especially in this time of increasingly computerized medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read and receive a blessing
This is a great book. It affirms that healing has a spiritual dimension. Some of the stories touched me in such a way that I will remember them all of my life. I read this book as part of a book club; it generated good discussion. I plan to give away copies to friends and family. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from a serious illness. It is both hopeful and real, two qualities difficult to combine in spiritual writing. ... Read more

Talk about an audacious title! But Suze (pronounced "Suzie") Orman means business in this anecdote-rich compendium of tips on 401(k)s, marriage, homes, and happiness. The PBS star/financial adviser has made plenty of the mistakes she warns against, like getting a 30-year mortgage instead of a cheaper 15-year, using Visa cards as magic carpets to calamity, and losing $20,000 in borrowed bucks to bum investment advice. Then she became a Merrill Lynch broker and an author capable of selling 10,000 books in 12 minutes on QVC. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LAW OF ATTRACTING MONEY
I have long been a fan ofThe Suze Orman Show on CNBC so I do not know why it took me so long to read one of her books. Her advice is always right on the mark about finances and this book is perfectly in line with that. She has plenty of great advice on buying a home, explaining mortgages, and how to decide which life insurance policy, annuity, or bonds are best for you. The book will be very useful for anyone who needs easy to understand descriptions of these financial concerns.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Teach Children the Meaning of Character
After hearing about this book for several years, my husband and I decided to check it out and see what we thought. We listened to the audio book and were very impressed by the stories that were used to illustrate different virtues. While much of the anthology was intended for very young children, there were also selections that people of any age could enjoy. The many stories gave examples of: Hard Work; Compassion; Honesty; Friendship;Loyalty; Persistence; Courage; Faith; Self-Discipline and Responsibility.5-0 out of 5 stars Time honored stories read by well known actors and actresses

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Soul
Yawn...another self-help book (this one is geared towards the would be business leaders of the future.)I had to read this for a graduate class and if it were not required reading I would have certainly quit reading it after the first few pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not the regular "Let me show you how to lead"
If you are looking for a book with a recipe that tells you how to lead, forget this one. Bolman and Deal really get to the core of leading, the soul. No management technics, just pure leadership from the heart. If you don't like to feel humble first before learning how to get to the top, then this is surely not your choice. The best book about leadership, believe me, I know about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantasic.A surprise gift that truly surprises.
I've recently completed a graduate program in administration, and am beginning work on another degree utilizing leadership and management that includes this book as a required reading.I have to say I was pretty skeptical of it's value for the first few pages, but suddenly I found myself 3/4 of the way through and starving for more.I highly recommend this book to anyone that has ever managed people and wondered if any amount of money could possibly justify the aggravation, dissolutionment, and/or waning excitement of it all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Said the Buddhist to the hot dog vendor, "Make me one with everything!"
Very few religious leaders speak deeply about ethics in a manner that allows people to think deeply as a result. Too many religious leaders are authoritarian in their edicts about morality or lax because gaining converts and their money is foremost on their minds. (Yeah, I'm a little cynical.)
5-0 out of 5 stars He knows what he's talking about...take notes and learn
The Dalai Lama considers the state of the world in relation to ethics with a fine-toothed comb. (I am currently borrowing "Ethics for the New Millennium" as an abridged audiobook from my local library. This is a tape I will repeatly listen to until its due date...)The Dalai Lama is such a sweetheart! I love how he perceives the world, suggests solutions and alternatives to global and ethical dilemnas, and remains optimistic about the future. He believes that we are a people who want to be happy while avoiding suffering. He acknowleges that we do have a dark side that we must keep in check and subdue; but to counter this dark side, the Dalai Lama believes that people are mostly gentle by nature and can return to that natural state with discipline and guidance. We deviate from our better nature when we try to find happiness the wrong way or in the wrong things, and thereby only feel transitory illusions of happiness that may cause harm to others. As a pop song claims, "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look in the mirror and then make a change...I'm looking at the man in the mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways...etc."The Dalai Lama is definitely in favor of the need for personal growth and an inner revolution for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple and Comprehensive Study on Ethics
There are few books that I've read that have captured my interest so much as to inspire me to read them twice. This is one of those books. It is not a book about Buddhism. It is not a book about religion. Yet I am confident that most people will find the core values of their faith in these pages. "Ethics" is a book about morality. It teaches the reader how we benefit individually from living our lives in an ethical manner as well as how society as a whole benefits. And it describes how society suffers, and we suffer, when our actions are immoral and self-serving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and logical, yet informal and friendly
I won't bother restating what others have stated more than adequately. I'll just say the best and worst thing about this book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read
I have read this book four times. It is the apologetic book out there. However, it is very heavey reading and demands your full attention. Don't be surprised if many times you find yourself going back and re-reading something.

2-0 out of 5 stars People often believe what makes them feel good.
After hearing the scientist who led the Human Genome project say this book transformed him from an atheist to a Christian, I had to read it to see such powerful inspiration.Lewis does write in a simple style that is easy to follow. He also uses simple analogies to explain complex theological issues.Yet the analogies don't actually prove anything, they just help you "understand" some of the esoteric aspects of Christianity. You can accept his points as valid if you want - it does give life a wonderful purpose. But, if you are a free thinker and value truth over feel good concepts, you should look deeper into his arguments and see if there is any substance.Or does it just make you feel good and more important.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest generation speaks
The United States of America was blessed with a generation of founding fathers who were at the same time people of action, and people of thought. They were an incredibly brilliant group of political and moral thinkers. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, Madison had a profound understanding of both human nature and the unique circumstances bound up with the founding of the United States. Their dream was of creating a nation like no other before, one based on principles of freedom, and dignity of the individual The ideal formulation is of course in one of the documents central to this collection, ' The Declaration of Independence' , life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Enjoyable
Bill Bennett has collected some of the greatest pieces of rhetoric and stories of our founding fathers. This work includes everything from patriotism, the meaning of freedom, and romance to ethics and advice. It's a wonderful collection, one that will connect the listener to the intellect of the greatest Americans, at least the greatest of the early Americans.Bennett doesn't read any of his selected pieces, only some of the introductory material. However, the people who do read the work do a magnificent job. It's an abridgement of the source work and runs about 4 hours. It's a perfect collection for long drives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book of Virtue's, Americana Style
This is like the Americana version of Bennett's previous excellent compilations, THE BOOK OF VIRTUES and THE MORAL COMPASS. In the first incredible book, Virtue's, Bennett takes the reader on a journey that spans the globe and bridges time with stories of virtue from ancient Rome to the modern world, and writings from Aesop to Yeats; and the Moral Compass is predominantly poems and fables. OUR SACRED HONOR, as the dust jacket directs, is filled with "Words of advice from the Founders in stories, letters, poems and speeches."

4-0 out of 5 stars A leader of women writes from her personal experience
Self-discipline is essential to success in all areas of life. Making the conscious choice to do what you ought to do, however, often takes a great deal of strength. The source of this strength is God. Having learned the hard way that discipline requires training, Dr. Kelley suggests a system of checks and balances for self-control. Noting her personal journey toward spiritual discipline, the author offers this thought-provoking and truly inspirational guide to self-motivation and control to encourage the reader to reap the rewards of leading a disciplined life. After years of unsuccessfully battling her weight and other negative aspects of her life, Kelley concluded that she had the motivation to change but not a sincere desire for gaining self-control. Her belief in God's power to bring control to some of life's most uncontrolled situations helped change her life. More than just a self-help book, Divine Discipline offers specific guidelines for making positive lifestyle changes toward personal growth. Kelley provides valuable guidelines for nutrition, fitness, time management, and goal planning that will help the reader realize the importance of one's internal resources by employing those inner strengths. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Dr. Laura
She's witty, entertaining, and so full of good advice. And this book is right there. Even though it's almost a decade old, it sounds like the same old Dr. Laura. Don't shack up. Have some character. Do the right thing. I guess these are the types of things that should never go out of vogue. I was entertained, though you can get the gist of what she says here from her radio show. But then you get to skip the commercials here. I think if more people would only listen to the good doctor, perhaps they wouldn't screw them up so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are what you do-first do good then feel good
There is really no such thing as unconditional self-acceptance.Those who say so are promulgating a pernicious falsehood. One must first live a decent, honorable and productive life.Only then do you get to feel good about yourself.Seeking to heedlessly gratify your desires or impulses of the moment to do things (or fail to do things) your conscience knows to be contrary to your standards of right, worthy and virtuous behavior is, in a mental, emotional and spiritual sense, akin to spending capital that you have not earned, and therefore will eventually cause you to feel very negatively not just about your behavior but also about who and what you are (except, perhaps, for sociopaths). You cannot have your cake and eat it too. The longer, for better or worse, you behave in certain ways, the more it comes to define you, not only to others but also to yourself.Thank you, Dr. Laura, for helping me to learn this lesson of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nails it ...
God bless for Martha Stout for writing this amazing book.If you have ever encountered someone who defies explanation, who you just feel uncomfortable around, who you don't trust, you must read this book.Someone has finally revealed in a most readable manner true sociopathic behavior and how it can exist without being called to task for the horrendous damage it can do.I truly think this book should be on the bestseller list, just so it reaches more people. It gives a voice to everyone who has been affected by sociopathic behavior whether they have realized what it was or not.Thank you Martha Stout for writing this fascinating book.Your courage is deeply appreciated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read With Caution: Misrepresents Our Armed Forces
The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout (2005), in the main, is on the mark. It is clear, straightforward, and the examples are easy to follow. But, I take strong exception to the impression Dr. Stout leaves that the soldier in general and special operations professionals (snipers, undercover operatives, hand-to-hand specialists), in particular, are sociopaths. She says: "To some extent, we can think of sociopaths as being shaped and maintained by society because nations so often require cold-blooded killers, from anonymous foot soldiers. . . Sociopaths are fearless and superior warriors. . .(Stout 2005:139).
