At last!
I got this book the instant it came out.This is the topic I have been looking for from Deepak. I've always felt that his background in medicine, spiritual experience and wisdom traditions puts him in an almost unique position to really dig into the subject of the afterlife. He really delivers. This is a facinating read for the intellectually and spiritually curious.
Pseudo Science
Chopra attempts to use the language of science to disguise absolute rubbish and convoluted thinking. Don't waste your time with this pseudo science dribble.

This is no Little Prince
I feel like I am pushing against the tide, but perhaps I can warn others, like me, who agreed to read this book because of comparisons to St. Exupery's classic, The Little Prince.It is too late to warn off my book club.Others expecting anything remotely as charming, disarming, witty, and downright delightful as Le Petit Prince should look elsewhere.I have read St. Exupery, Mr. Coelho, and you are no St. Exupery.
Very Confusing Text!!!
I'm in an eighth grade honors class, and had to read this book for an assignment.Unfortunately, I found the book vey boring and extremely hard to understand.The text was very confusing, with all the different lessons, all being learned at the same time.I do not recommend this book to anyone under 16.

Beware of Foreign Editions
WARNING: The Alchemist is one of my favorite books. In fact, it was my inspiration when I set off on the journey to make my own dream come true--to realize my own "Personal Legend". The original was written in Portugese so what we see is a translation.

Wonderful tale with special meaning
This is a very charming tale and has deep meaning behind it. A great book to read more than once because of how powerful it is. A classic.
A most consuming story of a shepherd boy on search
Not often do you discover a goldmine in the simple story of a Shepherd boy. Santiago is seeking his Personal Legend to find his destiny in the Language of the World and in his heart of love. Traveling from Andalusia and beloved, Fatima, meeting the King of Salem, the Englishman, finally the mystic, Alchemist, he learns to turn himself into the wind, overcoming his fears of an African desert and those distant Pyramids of Egypt he discovers his Treasure! In discovering his treasure he loses his fears, learns things along the way he would have never discovered without following his dreams!
Sales/Motivational Book sold as Mainstream Fiction
Not that there's anything wrong with that.It was a cute book and a good fable about following your dreams and creating your own reality with the power of your mind and the strength of your spirit.I enjoyed it.

Outstanding Content
Pema is very funny and personable. She cuts throught it and gets to the point with excellent real world examples. What she gives on this CD is something that you can use everyday. Her discussion on "Shenpa" was worh the price of the CD!

Changing Your Perspective
Don't go into situations with specific expectations or you may end up frustrated and angry.The book helps you learn to roll with the punches.We find ourselves in such a rush and that puts extra pressure on ourselves (and the others around us).
You Don't Have to be Buddhist to Get a Lot From This.
I found myself getting stuck in repetitiousthought patterns even after decades of meditation practice.This audio book is one of the best teachings I've ever heard and can apply to anyone with an open mind who is ready to find thekeys to get unstuck.I speak from my experience and the experience everyone I know who listens, to it.I hear things like "life altering changes"."Getting Unstuck" is awesome. An Interesting Look At What People Read And Why
I've read a number of books and articles about reading. I love to read and find it fascinating to see what others read and how the books have influenced their lives. More often than not, the list includes the same titles. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and THE CATCHER IN THE RYE are usual favorites. GREAT EXPECTATIONS and THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV are often mentioned by more adventurous readers and of course, a work of Shakespeare has to be included on such a list. I planned on passing by YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK since I figured I already know what's going to be in it, but when I looked in the back of the book, glanced at the titles, I was impressed by the variety of contributors, the wide array of books selected, and the stories that followed. Each contributor selects a book, tells a personal story and the way the book impacted their life.

One of the Best Chopra Books! The Core of it all.
Exceptional and brief book that hits the nail on the head with the main ideas and practices that can transform your life and help you to achieve what you want. I believe that Chopra initially did not like the word success for this book because it often registers for people as more materialistic than he means. This is a about life success in a grand and overarching way. Outstanding and HIGHLY Recommended!

As always, Scott Cunningham comes through with the information that we needed as those on the solitary path. If you can't find what you need in here, you may not really need it.

Wonderful Book for Beginners
This book is a wonderful introduction to Wicca.Scott Cunningham writes in a way that is very understanding and non-threatening, and he makes the reader feel as though it's absolutely okay to follow whatever path they choose because it's their life and no one else's.I am not Wiccan, but I felt the book helped me to appreciate my eclectic pagan path more because of the way he writes.I also recommend Living Wicca.It is a sequel to this book that goes into how to actually apply the concepts in everyday life. ... Great 'how to' book
A good summary of many of the self-improvement books I have read over the past few years. The Power of Focus is more like a workbook with exercises at the end of each chapter.
Terrific!

Only Love can Heal the Soul
When things fall apart it is not the mind that will ultimatley save us but our heart and soul. Our intellect can serve our best interests when it conjures up strategies that align with our hearts. That said, there is a reason why it often takes a tragedy to push someone to reconnect with God and divine inspiration. Not talking about religious addiction ... but rather that miracle of surrendering to the flow and what a more divine plan has in mind. Chodron goes to the "heart" of the matter ... the broken heart that is left in tatters .... where the healing is first and foremost demanded. The cure for the pain lies in the pain ... and in harnessing a greater spiritual force. A must read!

Feeling pretty bad?Read this.
I happened across this book by accident when a lot of things in my life were truly falling apart.Pema Chodron will some day be reknowned as a very significant spiritual leader, if she is not already.She has an amazing way of bringing spiritual truth down to the executional level.You can do these things, and doing them helps - a lot.I can't recommend this highly enough to anyone who is struggling.

A bit disappointing
Even though I am biased towards Jimmy, I was a little disappointed by this book.While some sections are very succinct and Jimmy is clearly writing from the heart, for $15 one would expect a little more analysis and explanation of the major issues of the day.

An important book for our times
I bought this book from the UK amazon under the title Faith & Freedom. It is an eye-opening account of how religious fundamentalists have managed to leave the impact of their worst attitudes of intolerance, self-righteousness, and belligerence on American domestic and foreign politics, something that concerns me as a UK citizen, because that which significantly affects the most powerful country on the planet is liable to have repercussions elsewhere. But after its eye-opening, soberingcontent, the book ends with a more gracious tone, encouraging Americans to return to a renewed commitment towards their own best ideals in a way that is reflected in the country's dealings with the rest of the world. May this happen, else America's reputation could undergo irreversible damage. Hopefully this excellent book will exert a wide and good influence. Highly recommended.

An accurate, honest and true account of the state of our country.
Absolutely the best non-fiction book-on-dvd I've ever listened to. President Carter gives an accurate and honest account of the political, social and physical changes currently dividing the American society under this current administration. I remember as a young girl hearing a White House biographer say that it would be years after President Carter's administration that we would appreciate his intelligence and the contributions he made to peace and the strength of the nation. I think this book brings that prediction to fruition. What a shame that we don't have a leader who cares about the future of the country and the people's well being.

Exceptional Teacher
Pema Chodron has a wonderful kind voice.Her teaching on these CD is a gentle introduction to Buddhism for the lay person.I found great solace in her words and her voice.Like the Dalai Lama and Thubten Chodron, Pema Chodron's laughter is an expression of pure joy.The genuine joy that I hear in their laughters is proof that Buddhism will help me, and indeed it has helped me.

Myth understandings
In various writing books, we can be told that there are really only nine plots in fiction or seven or three or some other number.For Joseph Campbell, when discussing myth (which is closely related to fiction), there is only one plot.This plot, which he never calls such, is the subject of his classic work, The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
A dated classic, and here's why...
Both as a commentary on the stages of myth and as its own mono myth, there is no denying the genuine artistry that Joseph Campbell has brought to this effort.But the reason he has been awarded a mere star is the same reason that hopefully this review itself will be dated when you read it -- namely because evolutionary behavioral psychology has made huge strides since 1948.
My Bible
I've been carrying around a tattered copy of this book since 1969 and it comes closest to what a Bible should be - a book that yields wisdom whatever page it opens to. It is most understandable if you have a project to do - writing your own novel, analyzing great literature, or working through your own dark journey. I read this book 5 years ago and made some vital steps forward that CHANGED my life. I still write the morning pages from time to time. It is a great book for right-brained people.

Many good ideas in this book - especially the "morning pages" but I personally found The Artist's Way at Work to be more helpful.

A very shallow puddle
About 8 months ago, during a very bad "flu-experience", I had a great afternoon reading all the negative reviews on 'The Alchemist' and this little gem. And although I was warned, I just HAD to find out for myself (some stubborn people just never learn, do they): could this book really be as awful as these reviewers said it is? And the answer is YES.
A quest that is as ancient as it is modern.
Coelho is a master of the words and he doesn't fail to show that even in this book. His storytelling is flowing and never overwhelming or boring.
Brilliant
Coelho's writing can only be described as Genuis.Hes a natural and will certainly touch your heart, mind, and soul.He inspired and motivated me with every word that he has written throughout the years.Word in a review cannot begin to describe the writing of this brilliant man.All of his books are highly recommended. ... Dr. Chopra is a dear man.To be in his presence is a powerful experience.But sometimes it's painful to read his work, as when he goes over the same material again and again, chapter after chapter.Mimicking his one time spiritual master, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who does the same thing so much more elegantly.

High quality, sensitive 4.5* -- recommended
A commentary on Shantideva's 8th c. classic from transcripts of Pema's teachings at Gonpo Abbey in Nova Scotia (she's resident teacher), using the Padmakara translation, verbal advice from Trungpa Rinpoche, & Dzigar Kongtrul, & prior commentaries (e.g. the Dalai Lama's "Transcendent Wisdom" & Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's "Meaningful to Behold").The text is a guidebook for compassionate action (i.e. how to be a bodhisattva); the commentary is interspersed with groups of stanzas.The book has a Western orientation & a friendly, down-to-earth tone, making it "accessible even to people who know nothing of Buddhist teachings."Interestingly, Thubten Chodron has written two books bearing titles of two chapters ("Working with Anger" & "Taming the Mind").All three are psychologically astute per Pema's prior works (e.g. "Start Where You Are" addressing lojong mind control).Her commentary is especially helpful both with cryptic passages & in explicating text in terms relevant & understandable to modern, Western readers.I have effectively utilized the section on anger.Pema's advice is practical & relevant: pp. 91-2: "Treat our crippling emotions like drug pushers.If we don't want to stay addicted for life, we have to see that our negative emotions weaken us & cause us harm.It is just as difficult to detox from emotions as it is to recover from heavy drugs or alcohol." p. 165: "Trungpa R. used to say, when something like anger arises, we should regard it as `not me.'
