    Editorial Review

In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and the man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran's prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's great religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work, pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would surely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." Free of dogma, free of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphorisms a 20th-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of other readers already have.Read more

Inspirational and true teachings about various aspects of life are what you will find when you read this beautiful book. The book is short, 96 pages, and includes artwork by the author. The short chapters begin with various people (a ploughman, a judge, a woman, a rich man, an old priest, a mason, a hermit, etc.)asking the mystic to speak about different subjects of life, such as:On Beauty, On Good and Evil, On Marriage, On Joy and sorrow, on friendship, and many more)

    Editorial Review

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and Read more

Gandhi may have been the only honest successfull politician ever.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gandhi, A man of Truth
Barrister Gandhi, in his book "Gandhi and Autobiography: The Story of my Experiments With Truth" is a real account of experiments with truth or what is percieved to be the truth. Gandhi, the youngest of three sons was born and brought up in Porbandar, India. His love for truth and respect for all humanity was put in him by his father who was "...a lover of his clan, truthful, brave and generous..." His mother too left him with an "...outstanding impression ... of saintliness" as "she was deeply religious", a woman devoted to prayer and fasting. It's on this background that Mr. Gandhi built his life of Experiments on.

What can you say that hasn't been said about this man?A good read and a wonderful humanist perspective.I was amazed at his capacity and restraint to qualify his perspectives and avoid embellishments. It took a bit longer to read through this novel and left me to ponder. This should be on a list of books for suggested reading for everyone.I only understood the general history and concepts that he pursued in his life, which were admirable. This book allowed me to see why he was so exceptional. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I bought this book when it was first published, and was astounded at the accuracy and elegant simplicity of the personality descriptions. The author/astrologer is taking his information from the star chart plus other sources (i.e., numerology, tarot, etc.) but the personality descriptions are so amazingly accurate, as much or more so than a personal natal chart. In fact, I find that this book has been more useful than the 2 natal charts I had done by professional astrologers. I moved to another city a year ago, and gave my book away. I miss it so much that I am buying another one. For anyone interested in personality study, I highly reccommend this book. And in addition to being exceptionally useful -- it's just FUN.

In life, one of the big questions you have to answer is "What am I going to do when I grow up?"To help you wrestle with the concept of what God has planned for you in terms of ministry and vocation, let me suggest an excellent book entitled The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life. Author Os Guinness explores the concept that God has a calling for each and every Christian - a purpose for your life, something that will enlist and enthrall you, even captivate you!For most of you, your job will not be your calling; for some, it will be.But what's the difference, you ask - read The Call to find out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting in the Pew
Parenting in the Pew is part memoir and part practical theology as a pastor's wife grapples with issues regarding children and the public worship service. For individuals and churches who are questioning participating in children's ministry programs through elementary school, Parenting in the Pew will provide food for thought and conviction that it is good, right and worthwhile for children to worship with their parents.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting in the Pew: Guiding Your Children into the Joy of Worship
This book is full of fun and helpful suggestions for parents who love worship and want to share their worship experience with their children (toddlers to teens). I think her suggestions can easily cross a variety of worship styles. As a parent of grown sons, she can look back at the struggles and see the fruit that remained. I found her chapter on the sacraments particularly thought-provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book
One of the perennial issues all parents have to deal with is how to effectively train their children to participate in the morning/evening worship service. This can be one of the most embarrassing seasons in any parents life. But it is also one of the most important seasons in the life of your child as they learn to participate in the right worship of God among congregation of the redeemed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Parable For Today
The book starts out in Auburn, a lowly, nowhere town, with Joshua as a humble woodcarver. As people begin to learn more about him, he begins to be more well-liked among the people, but less liked among some of the priests.
2-0 out of 5 stars Read the Gospels, not this book to learn about Jesus
I give this book 2 stars because it has its good points and it attepts it include all religions into Gods love and his plan.Jesus loves us all, not just Christians. And it seems this book tries to portray this.
4-0 out of 5 stars If only we could be more like Joshua
A kind young man by the name of Joshua moves into Auburn.A small community with close knit groups of friends.Joshua fits in easily enough because of his respected work as a carpenter and his friendly attitude. But there is more to Joshua than meets the eye.He is extremely well versed in Christianity, although his views are quite different from what people are used to.Many of the townsfolk find his message uplifting and eye-opening.But some of the Church officials are less than happy about Joshua's preaching and they move to do something about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly interesting for Catholics, including the estranged...
I wasn't familiar with Girzone's other books at all when I snatched this title from my public library's new book shelf last week. Also, I am a former Catholic (ages 20-40) who has been inactive for 20 years. However, I have lately been interested in autobiographical or academic books about the value of faith, and this volume fits into my recent reading. I found the second half more compelling than the opening part of the memoir, but I'm glad I read this. Girzone, a "retired" priest (rare in these days of shortages), is not afraid to criticize the human failings of Catholic clergy and laiety, and indeed, the flaws of Protestant institutions and believers as well. However, he also argues for the validity of the founding documents of what became the Catholic Church. He tells us that one does not blame the pure water of faith just because the rusty human buckets to whom God has to entrust itleak and spill and soil it. I think another recent book, "What Jesus Meant" by fellow Catholic Garry Wills, is even better than "My Struggle With Faith" but Amazon seekers looking up this title probably are going to enjoy both of them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opening Experience
This book is a must-have!It's a great conversation piece for get togethers. When I read my birthday I was amazed at how the analogy applied to me.I bring it to work once or twice a year for people to read about themselves, their children, spouses, etc. Most are awed at the accurate depiction illustrated of themselves or loved ones born on a certain day.The only people that have picked up my book and denied the accuracy of what the book depicted were people whose personalities were negative. When I read their birthday personality I felt the book was right on about them.It described their negative and maybe vindictive personality which I saw in these people. The negative/pessimistic personalities that read about themselves denied any truth to what they read because they don't want to accept who they are.I have read numerous birthday personalities for my spouse, my children, relatives, friends and acquaintances and found this book to be very accurate.I feel it's a must-have.You should know what YOU are capable of and know more about the people in your life. This book is very accurate in my opinion!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read but you will quickly tire
Each birthday gets two pages of trivia such as who was born on this day, a personality evaluation, numbers & planets, tarot, health, advice, meditation, and more. Just imagine being born on 20 April. Adolf Hitler. The book is too old to remember the Columbine shootings.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice to read a book
that doesn't go into great detail about how flawed we have been since birth and if we don't do certain things on certain days in certain places, we're all going to burn in this terrible place forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book for all Christians to read
This book is not about the hereafter in the sense that it doesn't go into extreme detail as to what life will be like in the hereafter and then from there, to the New Heavens and the New Earth. For that sort of details account and examination, always within a literal Biblical point of view, I would suggest Alcorn's Heaven. This book, another masterfully explored book by Billy Graham, focuses on the here and now in such a way as to examining out outlook toward that day when we die (or even better, thank the Lord, when He comes and Raptures the church). What does it mean in this, now, 21st century to live and to die? What are we to make of the culture of death that we see in the media and across the United States--from the tragedy of the late Ms. Shiavo to abortion on demand and on to euthanasia for our elderly for any old cause or reason? Basically such deaths come about because they are convenient, not based on literal Christian point of view toward the meaning of life and the dignity of dying and death.Graham asks and uses the Bible to answer questions such as "what does it mean to die as a Christian" verses "what does it mean to die without hope" (i.e. without Jesus Christ in your life as your Savior and King). For those who are dying with Jesus as the Savior, as examined by Graham, there is peace even if the death is in the face of persecution by those who do not see the light. For those who are dying without, well, there is only a slow decline into darkness, as Graham explains using the truth of the Bible. Thus, Mr. Graham is not afraid to ask questions nor is he afraid to look for answers through the written words of the Lord and through those He has touched through the ages to be His messengers, great and small.I would suggest anyone to take this book and seriously read it, examine what it has to say about death, dying, and eternity...work it into reading such books as Deadline and Heaven by Randy Alcorn...and really then falling on your hands and knees for a true talk with the Lord. Here and now you need to understand the eternal truths of living and dying and eternity.Graham points the way for the reader to go on and to use the Bible so that it shows the reader the foundations of truth and of forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reasons to Believe
I read this book in the hardback edition when it was called FACING DEATH (AND THE LIFE AFTER), and all these years later, I still myself talking about it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Read this BEFORE you lose someone.
Billy Graham takes a gentle yet uplifting look at death, loss and the afterlife, offering biblical advice and insight into this process we all must face at one point.Sadly I have had to face it sooner than I ever ever thought I would have to when I lost my wife of twelve years to liver failure in September of 2003.Reading this book after the fact offers little help or solace with my grief and one should really read it before facing the supposed Great Unknown. This is an ounce of prevention, what I am in need of is a few pounds of cure.Perhaps a re-reading of A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis is in order.Nonetheless, I recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but Definitely not Spiritual
THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF RELATIONSHIPS is a follow up to author Gary Goldschneider's earlier book about the study of people based upon the day they were born, rather than their astrological sign.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
This book is definitely something different than what I normally read, but really had a lot of interesting insights on relationships of all kinds.I definitely recommend it for others who can maybe gain more understanding of their relationships in life, whether past or present!

4-0 out of 5 stars As best as can be expected for a generalization of relationships
This book is quite a large book, comprehensive of 48 different personalities in context to their relationships, including specific matchings with each of the other 48 personalities.Although it may seem that some don't appear in a positive light, I've found that often it is only putting in "black and white" what we often gloss over in "rose-colored glasses".I found it interesting when various pairings were listed as "best for marriage" yet "worst for love".I would like to think those relationships were one in the same.Other than that confusion I find the book to be rather insightful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good handbook for those starting their deeper spiritual journey
One of the best introductions to Eastern thought, LIVING IN THE LIGHT is well written and easy to understand. Shakti explains our role as channels of energy. This energy is from God, and our job is to allow this energy to flow freely through us into the world for positive change. She demonstrates how problems can result from blocking this flow, and shows how dissolving blockages through meditation and other methods can heal and empower us. The book is divided into background theory and practical application. A good handbook for those starting their deeper spiritual journey.

2-0 out of 5 stars This isn't really new material.
First, I should preface this review by saying that I believe the edition I read was an earlier one, which may have not been thoroughly updated. That said, what I did read was, well... not too revolutionary.I have read a number of books in this vein and know what entails a good read. For me, that has to be something which really challenges me and not so much gives me answers, but new questions and avenues to explore. This book did not do this for me.Basically, Shakti explains her background. She is very self-congratulatory (I felt) as she explains that she lives her life by intuition, and has done all kinds of things people have felt were crazy, because she listened to her intuition.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK...for what it was
As a classic, this book effectively introduces the beginner to New Age Thought. The mirror principle, issues regarding one's "shadow", cultivating one's inner female/male, and the benefits of trusting your intuition are presented here in clear and readable detail. But I have two real problems with this book.
