    Editorial Review

Thich Nhat Hanh's writing is deceptive in its subtlety. He'll go on and on with stories about tree-hugging or metaphors involving raw potatoes; he'll tell you how to eat mindfully, even how to breathe and walk; he'll suggest looking closely at a flower and to see the sun as your heart. As the Zen teacher Richard Baker commented, however, Nhat Hanh is "a cross between a cloud, a snail, and piece of heavy machinery." Sooner or later, it begins to sink in that Nhat Hanh is conveying a depth of psychology and a world outlook that require nothing less than a complete paradigm shift. Through his cute stories and compassionate admonitions, he gradually builds up to his philosophy of interbeing, the notion that none of us Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Many Hours Of Psychotherapy
In this book, Thich Nhat Hanh goes beyond the differences between Eastern and Western philosophies and guides the reader in a very pragmatic manner towards creating peace.Interpersonal peace, peace in the family and community, world peace, and most importantly, peace within oneself. His words reflect an ancient wisdom which is simple yet so profoundly insightful. In my opinion, his approach to solving emotional suffering and curtailing society's ills dwarfs many theories of modern behavioral and social sciences. This is a work to be read and reread. I also recommendThich Nhat Hanh's "The Miracle of Mindfulness" as a complement to this work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness
From a Vietnamese Monk who has witnessed the transgressions and casulties of war, to forgive and teach the very enemy he tried to enlighten about the war-- I am amazed. He lives the life he teaches- non aggresion, peace, present moments. In his teaching I see him forgive and move on with the task of spreading his word to the world and anyone who will listen.I have become a reader of many of his books and feel like it is a friend talking to me.You can be a drop of water, a wave, but you can also be in the ocean.Thank you Thich Nhat Hanh...

5-0 out of 5 stars My very favorite book of all time.
Thich Nhat Hanh is my very favorite author and,"Peace Is Every Step" is my very favorite book. Reading him you really get the feeling that a close and caring friend is talking to you. Also, I very much connect with his philosophy of interbeing. His poem, "Please Call Me By My True Names" is easily worth the price of this book in my opinion. There's just so much. When you are finished with this book, you should fully understand the concept of interbeing, and find yourself truly loving everyone and every thing! ... Read more

Pastor Hagee has written a book and Nuclear War and Irans coquest to aquire Weapons, and true to life, look at the news today. I support John Hagee and I believe he is the most informed Pastor on tv and tells the truth!

1-0 out of 5 stars Hagee is a heretic
How do you make a career preaching about the end of the world? We've been in the "end times" since the death of Christ. Hagee has been using fear and emotion to take advantage and brainwash people for such a long time it's crazy, any Christian with an average knowledge of the bible can see that Hagee has indeed made up his own gospel. To all my fellow Christians, stop reading and buying into this end of the world hype, concentrate on your own spiritual growth, and witness to others. Don't be so quick to hate Muslims either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!

    Editorial Review

If you have always assumed that Christianity and Buddhism are as far apart philosophically as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all living things. And in both he finds an emphasis on living practice and community spirit. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
Let me start this by saying that when I first read this book, I had just started delving into the subject of "other religions".So, if you are in that position, wanting to see what other belief systems have to say, READ THIS BOOK.He discusses how Christianity and Buddhism are related in their beliefs.Truth is truth no matter who says it.Being able to see how Christian truth is similar to, or the same as, Buddhist truth was very enlightening. Before reading this, Buddhism was a foreign object to me.After reading this, Buddhism was still foreign but it made me want to read more about Buddhism to become more familiar with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unfounded assumptions challenge the validity of the author's points
While I do not have a problem with the basic idea of comparing the two religions of Buddhism and Christianity, I find this book invalid because the author forms his points on unfounded assumptions of the Christian faith. For instance, he denies the divine nature of Jesus without the use of backup sources--including the Bible. He then proceeds to use this fallicy (according to the Christian faith) to "prove" a connection between the two religions.Instead of an unbiased comparison of two beautiful religions, the book reads like a thinly veiled attempt at Buddhist evangelism by someone who thinks highly of the Christian religion but does not know much about it.I appreciate the author's openmindedness and fondness for Jesus, but I cannot accept his extreme misconceptions about the Christian faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars Question of Faith
Thich Nhat Hanh brings together the Buddha and Christ showing the difference and simularity of both ways of living.Christians should not fear the eastern philosophy and the reverse is also true. You can incorporate both into your daily existance as there are no real clashes between the two.Buddha is just an enlightened person, not a son of god.Jesus will always be the teacher of the christian faith and the son of god.Thich Nhat Hanh points out the fact that the Buddah is not a god.People follow a way of attaing peace with Buddha and also follow a way to attain salvation throught Christ. There is room in the world for both teachings to coexsist together not one trampling over the other.I find his books relaxing, and easy to read and understand. In practice of Mindfulness you receive instruction on quieting your mind making full awareness possible to receive teachings from Christ in the present moment and a new understanding.I enjoyed this book and its meaning to me about the misconceptions most Christions have about other ways to explore life. ... What should we think when on the one hand Buddhism tells us that life is suffering and on the other we are told to enjoy life's every moment? Loved around the world for his simple, straightforward explanations of Buddhism, Thich Nhat Hanh has finally turned his hand to the very core of Buddhism and conundrums such as this. In the traditional way, Thich Nhat Hanh takes up the core teachings one by one--the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Twelve Links of Interdependent Co-Arising--but his approach is as fresh as a soft breeze through a plum orchard. For illustration, he dips into the vast stores of Buddhist literature right alongside contemporary anecdotes, pointing out subtleties that can get glossed over in other popular introductions. He also includes three short but key sutras, essential source teachings from which all Buddhism flows. Studying the basics of Buddhism under Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh is like learning basketball from Michael Jordan. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Read
This is, I believe, the second or third book I read by Thich Nhat Hanh."Living Buddha, Living Christ" sort of inspired me to pick this up.He gives the basics as to what this whole Buddhism thing is all about. His explanation is neither too simplified nor to technical for the "average reader".If you pick up one book on the teachings of Buddha, make it this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brillant Roadmap to Practicing
I've read a few books about the Buddha and Buddhism generally, but I am still very much a beginner. The other books I read covered the basics, but did not break them down in a way I, as a beginner and Westerner, could easily understand.I guess you could say those treatments were scholarly and intellectual to a fault.Hanh's simple, straightforward writing style, on the other hand, breaks down Buddhism's central concepts: the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. This simple style does not, however, lose any meaning. The result is much the opposite: I feel like this book has given me a good start in my practice. In fact, I'm willing to bet that it will give me much more each time I read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Half of Book is Better than the Second
The first two parts of the book alone cause me to give the whole book 4 stars. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I liked Hanh's poetic, and even flowery, style of writing.. it's tender, flexible, like a person should be when considering Buddhism.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my brother's life - literally and many others, too!
Many years ago, my Brother, Jeff, lived a very unfulfilling, sinful life.(When I say sinful, I DO mean full of the worst kinds of sin imaginable).A co-worker sensed histotal dissatisfaction with life, so she brought this book to work and placed it in his locker.Jeff did not think much of it, but he grudgingly took it home and read it in one sitting! He got down on his knees the second he finished reading "Hinds Feet on High Places" and prayed: "Lord, I don't care what price I have to pay.I am like the character "Much-Afraid" and I want to walk the High Places with you. Please forgive my sins, enter my heart and make me a new creation".Nothing happened immediately, but Jeff felt the weight of the world lift from his shoulders. One week later, he was driving home from practicing the organ at the church where he played each Sunday. After setting the organ stops, he grabbed his coat, got in his car, buckled his seatbelt and slowlymerged onto a four-lane highway with a 45mph speed limit. After just a few minutes, Jeff's life went black.A drunk driver was being chased by the police for speeding , clocked at 82mph in this 45mph zone. The drunk driver never even realized my brother was in the far right lane.He easily could have passed him as there were no other cars on the road at the time. But instead, he plowed directly into the rear of Jeff's car sending it in a spin, end over end 6 times until it rested in a telephone pole. The paramedics were there within 2 minutes. But Jeff was not breathing, his heart had stopped, he was hanging upside down still fastened in his seatbelt with a spinal cord injury trying to take his life. Needless to say, miraculously Jeff survived against all odds and went on the eventually finish his degree in Ministry. He rode in his wheelchair-lift van and spoke against drunk driving at high schools; he went from church to church to preach that contentment comes only from being satisfied with what one has in Christ Jesus; Jeff rode thousands of miles, preaching the goodness of God and how he would NEVER change a thing about his life, because he now was free and able to walk on thine high places with his Savior.Jeff, today, seventeen years later, three years after going to Heaven, still preaches the Gospel with a smile on his face.I am certain he is no longer encumbered by a wheelchair. But it wouldn't matter to Jeff if he was or wasn't.As long as Jeff is still walking, hand-in-hand on thine high places with Jesus, his Savior..................I can't think of a higher recommendation for a book than this. One could easily and sincerely say this can be a life-changing book. If you are looking for TRUTH but don't want it in a Church-like presentation, this book is for you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding and transforming negative feelings
This book gave me insight about accepting negative feelings and not letting them overpower you. I like the use of metaphors: visualizing anger like a crying baby (embrace it and soothe it), treating unpleasant feelings like an unexpected, perhaps also unpleasant guest (give them hospitality with the assurance they WILL go away...) I use this concept to try to comfort my (real-life) child. This book has given me many inspirations.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book blew my [angry] mind...
Ok, true, he talks a lot about breathing and for any of us that have a real temper, we're tired of hearing untempered people say, "Just breeeeath..." But he says a lot more than JUST breath. This book is very applicable, especially if you anger is affecting your personal relationships. The writing is simple and straightfoward. I have learned so much about how to think of my anger and what it means to "embrace" my anger and listen to it as to as weeping child. For me it is working. I have tried a lot of things to hide, suppress, LET GO, etc... and to the general public I serem really happy and relaxed. But inside I"m stormy and this book has great and specific instructions on how to find my way through the storm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Yet Profound
Probably the most destructive emotion to people is anger. Its insidious effects can not only destroy previously important relationships but it can literally kill a person via stroke or whatever. So many times we realize intellectually the harmful effects of anger but are unable to prevent ourselves from lashing out. Thich Nhat Hanh's advice is to practice mindful living. This means in our day-to-day actions like washing dishes, gardening, etc. we are completely in the moment. In other words, we aren't concerned about our bills, problems, fears, worries and so forth. What we are concerned about is being aware and present for the current moment so we don't miss it. Being in the moment like this allows us to be fully present for whatever may be happening. Being in the present moment when anger arises is comparable to a mother taking care of her baby. If the baby is agitated the mother doesn't tell the baby to get lost. The mother cuddles and consoles the baby till she calms down. This is the way we should handle our anger according to Thich Nhat Hanh.

The Sabbath is an awesome book to read for both Jews and Christians alike. Heschel's discussion of time, space and posessions is inspiring, and transforming. As a Christian, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and found it to be a very enlightening description of Jewish heritage. It challenged me to think about what time I observe with God, and for what reasons; what are my priorities; and how effective am I in living out my faith.

Opens our minds to see that everything is interconnected. 5-0 out of 5 stars A DharmaJewel!
As a student of Advaita Vedanta, I could not be more delighted to come across this eloquently and beautifully written treatise by Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh. At the core of Buddha's teachings lies the Jewel of the Heart Sutra which deals with our Changeless and Original Nature, Emptiness, captured in the phrase "emptiness is form, form is emptiness". Thay takes this rather abstract Buddhist concept andexpounds on its profound wisdom and practical implications in our everyday lives through antecdotal stories, mindfulness practices and guided breathing exercises with pure simplicity and casual ease devoid of the usual metaphysical language accompanying such profound teachings. Perhaps the most practical implication of absorbing Thay's Buddhist message is to connect and abide in our essential Buddha Nature until we are fully absorbed by it, in Realization or Enlightenment. Mindfulness is about being fully Present in the Eternal Moment and from this point of Stillness touching our essential core or the "ultimate dimension". To truly "Be Happy" there is the delusion or "notion" of birth and death to be overcome or transcended. With the Grace and ease of a true Zen Buddhist Master, Thich Nhat Hanh, skillfully guides us on the pathless path without distance back into our Heart, our true Home which in Reality we have never left. This is our true nature, beyond duality, and thus beyond fear. Through various guided exercises, Thay, shows us the illusion of our concepts and reveals the understanding of impermanence, emptiness or "suchness", interbeingness. I found this book extremely helpful in lifting my awareness and consciousness beyond the subtle confines of duality into the "ultimate dimension" beyond the "notions" of birth and death. To touch this Reality is to know the Self beyond the polarities of self and no-self, mind and no-mind, being and non-being. When we truly understand we are not the body, we touch our true Buddha Nature and in this realization lies our true healing and liberation beyond fear. We have arrived, we are Home. In the Ultimate we eternally dwell. OM Mani Padme Hum.

This book rates well alongside Arnold's 'Light of Asia'. It tells a more complete story of the Buddha's life and achievements, and clarifies some points about the teachings. With the companion book, 'The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching' the student and the adept both can gain valuable insight into The Buddha and His life. Well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why didn't I read this sooner?
A couple of years ago on retreat I asked a nun from Plum Village what her favorite Thich Nhat Hahn title would be. She named this hefty tome which I purchased but did not read for quite awhile, assuming that it would be tedious and difficult going. (I have no idea why, none of Thay's books are anything but lovely and engaging...) What a wonderful surprise I received as I started reading vignette after vignette from the Buddha's life. In breathtakingly beautiful prose, Thay brings this great historical figure to life in a way that just makes you wish you had been there. The stories also explain and illustrate some of the more esoteric teachings in ways that are simple and easy to grasp, especially for those of us not raised in this tradition. Thich Nhat Hanh is arguably the best author of Buddhist literature. In Old Path, White Clouds he tells the life story of Lord Buddha.Old Path, White Clouds doesn't distract readers with a lot of the mythology or mysticism.Instead Thich Nhat Hanh focuses on the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. What makes this work is Thich Nhat Han's writing style. He really draws you into the story and makes you feel like you were actually there.Although the book is almost 600 pages long, it is a very easy read and it may leave you wishing for more.I know that was the case for me.If you are only going to get one book on Buddhism, this is the one to get. ... My daughter (2) is a little young for this book yet, but I read it and think it is wonderful for children. If you have children about 6 or older who are having a difficult time or are angry about something, this book would be great. Even if your children are happy though, there are wonderful lessons here for everyone and that can help the world to become a more peaceful place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very different
While many children's books deal with fiction this book speaks of the reality of here and now.It is thought provoking on a child's level teaching spirituality and awareness. My six year old seems to enjoy listening to the stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to meditation...
Thich Nhat Hanh recently spoke to the United States Congress about peace, violence, compassion, and listening. He suggested that members of Congress can find both inner and universal peace through walking meditation, or mindful walking. This tiny book serves as an introduction to this practice. Each page represents an idea, and the first page proclaims "Anyone can do it." Reading on, the book reveals the true simplicity of walking meditation, and validates the claim that "anyone can do it." Controlling one's breath is not the goal, but being aware of one's breath, being aware of the earth and one's feet against it. The book explains how to accomplish this in incredibly easy to understand language. Short stories about the Buddah and Thich Nhat Hanh's experiences with walking meditation, as well as many photos, punctuate the lessons. The book also suggests practical applications for walking meditation: dealing with anger, panic, and helping to find solutions to immediate problems. A great introduction to meditation and the thought of Thich Nhat Hahn.

I've been waiting for an author to capture the experience of walking meditation. For years I have been baffled by those who say that walking is boring and that running is preferable. I have always found meditative walking to be joyful and now there is one who paints such a lovely picture of this mystical experience accessible for so many.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nuts
This book is just more of Hagee spewing about the end of the world and how Muslims, Arabs, blah blah blah are all evil. He's a dimwitted lunatic, but this book is recommended if you are, too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Be Open, But Think For Yourself
Beginning of the End is a fascinating look at where the world is heading in relationship to the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.A vague sort of marker on the timeline of earth's predetermined destiny. He does a fairly decent job of using previously fulfilled prophecies to prove the veracity of the Bible, and then goes on to give his educated opinion of how the end times might play out. While Hagee offers much to learn and ponder, no self-respecting person, especially a Christian, should take his word to be infallible.Read the book, do your own study and research, and come to your own conclusions. As Hagee himself states in the book, most of it doesn't really even matter for Christians because we won't be here when it happens anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars A look at Biblical prophecy, with a touch of speculation...
John Hagee's book "Beginning of the End" attempts to provide its reader with a vivid illustration of the chronology and events of the end-times according to the prophets of the Bible. The book serves as perfect complimentary reading to other books on the subject from authors like Tim LaHaye, Hal Lindsey, and Grant Jeffery. The historical notes and Biblical commentary add real value to this book, as readers will pick up on certain ideas never mentioned in similar books. For its overall explanation of the end times, this book merits a five-star rating.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Find!
This is the first book by Cynthia Heald that I have ever purchased, and I am hooked! It is the absolute best Bible study/devotional I have ever purchased. You are prompted to read short excerpts from the Bible and are then given questions from the author that allow you to reflect on what you have read. There is space provided for comments, as well as additional empty "notes" pages in the back.I am a very hands on learner so this format is great for me.Although, I am a daily Bible reader, this study has really helped me to grasp the power and awe of God's grace.I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful set of books!!!
Cynthia's Heald's books "Becoming a woman of..." books are excellent for any woman, whether you are just starting to read the Bible or have read it 10 times.Cynthia's writing style was truly impressive to me.Each chapter starts with a reflective Bible verse and an exerpt from a Christian author or speaker. Then it gives you three or four different verses to look up in the Bible, sections to write your notes, and then a section with the Author's reflection on the concept of the chapter. The chapters increase in complexity, each more challenging as you go on through the book.I bought them all at once, along with "Loving Your Husband" which is also in this Bible study format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Becoming a Woman of Grace was a wonderful study! It went back to the basics of christianity by defining the purpose of the law (10 commandments) and the purpose and reason for grace! I have always been impressed withCynthia Healds books... they provide a great format for getting into theword and really learning what it means to be a better woman for Christ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of Jewish theology
I'm very suprised with the amazing knowledge of Joshua Heschel, and glad to had invested on a very responsible work on Jewish theology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Torah: As Refracted Through the Generations
I am very interested in the text.I read it in conjuction with the Holy Bible Old Testament.I find that the comparative texts are very enlightening when read together.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a translation
The original "Torah min Hashamayim b'Aspaklaria shel Hadorot" was a Heschel masterpiece; its style of writing was, for lack of a better term, "high-rabbinic-esoteric", and its accessability was therefor somewhat limited. The translator's notes point out many of Heschel's literary tricks which would otherwise be lost to the English reader. Other on-the-page annotations provide excellent background into issues and ideas which Heschel relies upon after assuming that the reader is highly literate in rabbinic scholarship at the "rosh-yeshivah" level. To those who have not yet reached such level, this work is a wonderful addition to a library of basic rabbinic thought. As a scholarly work it proves that Heschel was first and foremost a great rabbi.

1-0 out of 5 stars These are all the same
Whether it's the 'Left Behind' series, (such a charming title), or 'Countdown to Doomsday' or any of the other blood and thunder books, you can count on one thing: God is mad as hell at all of us, (except the 'chosen') and is going to unleash a fury against his archenemy Satan. The great cosmic battle will be played out at Armeggedon where Satan and God will will duke it out in front of the whole world.Well, most of the world. The elect will be taken by rapture into Heaven safely ensconced away from the raging, bloody battle.
1-0 out of 5 stars BOOK FAILS TO ADDRESS JESUS' PROPHECY OF "THE LAST DAY."
This book fails to address the words of Jesus Christ concerning "the last day" in John 6:39-40; John 12:48 and John 5:28-29 which are the basis for the historical view on this subject.
    4-0 out of 5 stars I Admire Hagee's Courage!!
I didn't read this book until recently but I do admire John Hagee for writing it.It shows a fearless respect for informing the people of God about what has already gone on and letting us know what to expect in times like these and also the very importance of reading our Bibles and not only reading them but, allowing the Word of God to penetrate into our minds, hearts and souls. For therein lies all the answers to what's going on all around us today. ...
