5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Jesus is wonderful and the Bible, the Catechism and the Compendium are always with me. I read the catechism, then the compendium together. The footnotes are all there and all match number for number so it's easy to jump around the catechism and follow along in the compendium. It's an awesome resource and saves a lot of time. Plus, when you find something like Lumen Gentium, that you like in part in the compendium, then you have your sample of the text and can go to other resources to read more of the doc. All footnotes and scriputure quotes are there. A must have for the serious Catholic or serious study of Catholicism. It's the bomb! Peace be with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than priceless!
The full text of all the citations in the Catechism (except those in the Bible and those quoted in full) for *all* the footnotes in the Catechism in one volume is a remarkable achievement.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
The Companion to the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a wonderful resource for the inquiring mind or the serious academic. It is a treasure of all of the quote sources from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and allows you to go much deeper in your study without having to carry a giant reference library with you, or to have a stack or 10 or 20 books beside your desk. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Irenaeus's works
This work attempts to introduce the reader to the important Church Father Irenaeus, who presided as a Bishop in Lyons in around the 2nd century AD.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great Work - Important Pieces Missing
Overall, a great little book. The introductory sections by Grant are really helpful. My only real complaint is that it does not have every chapter or paragraph. Nowhere was this mentioned; neither in the preface, nor introductory chapters. So buyers need to know that this is an abridged addition. I was really disappointed when I realized, for example, that Book III chapter 2 was missing. I think this is a significant chapter in the book. There are lots of other chapters, & whole paragraphs missing. I assume the editor left out what he felt was redundant. So to find out what you missed, you'll have to hit the Early Christian Writings web site & take a glance to see if there are chapters & paragraphs missing that you might want to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise Introduction to the World of Irenaeus
I found Dr. Grant's work to be well-written and lucid. If there are those who are willing to criticize his work for not revealing every little detail about the life of St. Irenaeus, it's because we actually don't know much about him above what he wrote and the later comments of other writers - most of them incidental to other conversations.Grant has collected the essential information about the Bishop of Lyons and has, in my opinion, covered the most interesting parts of "Against Heresies" in his translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best of the Saint Ignatius books around for its price and content.
If you are looking for a common and useful type of Catholic spiritual exercise, you should know first that the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola may be a bit too dense and problematical for what you want. I would instead point you in the direction of The Divine Office (also called The Liturgy of the Hours) as a very wholesome and progressive type of daily prayer that is recommended to all the laity around the globe by the Holy See. The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola are certainly more than a little too heady and intense because of its meditations on topics like sinners in hell. If you are still looking for the Spiritual Exercises I would recommend this book over just one that covers the exercises because of its additional readings to put the exercises in context. I would also recommend that you maybe read through the Spiritual Exercises and try to answer the questions without too much spiritual intensity (using more reason and logic than feelings) or adopting the extreme environmental settings that Jesuits would undertake in doing them. As laity you are not supposed to be doing these on your own anyway. After talking to a Jesuit, I found out that the exercises are not for everybody and the person undertaking the exercises, needs supervision. I think this is very important and there is good reason to read the exercises before even attempting to undertake them because of the Catholic era (the 1500s) they where designed in. You will come across exercises that are extreme and very severe material especially post-Vatican II. For instance you are asked to meditate on a mortal sinner in hell on Day #1. If you grasp more of a modern meaning of these concepts then I think you can wisely avoid the mistakes of generating a horror-movie type God that wants you hell-bound for the slightest sin you may commit. This image is all too easy to do with this material if not monitored.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Classic
Saint Ignatius was a Basque military officer from Loyola, a great saint, and the founder of one of the most influential religious orders in world history: the Society of Jesus(the Jesuits). His personal writings reveal atruly gentle, emotional man who gave up all the pleasures of nobility tobecome a poor, wretched pilgrim for the sake of Christ. His Reminiscesrecounts all the main events of his life, from his bravery in the battlethat left him crippled for life, to his conversion in his recovery bed, andfinally to his founding of the Jesuit order. His journal reveals hisspirituality and describes his mystical experiences, his letters reveal hispatience, wisdom, and kindness, and his tremendously popular SpiritualExercises gives advice on how to dedicate your life to God and see Hisaction all around you. Ignatius's writings resonate with the tenderdevotion and the firmness of purpose found only in the writings of theSaints. Reading this book, one can see the guiding hand of Providence inthe life of Ignatius and in the history of the Church, a hand that can useeven the worst sinner to bring a shattered world back to His Son. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A noble man and a well told story
There are few old classic stories like the one of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. In this book we find an understandable story that fully explores all the parts that made this man special. His gifts and even his flaws are expossed but in the end, you will find great inspiraton and love for this human saint who walked so among us and did so much to influence our education system and the church policies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes it is Book One :-)
This is a nice translation of Book One, and you can get all 5 books in the ANF reprint by Eerdman's at www.christianbooks.com at 9USD including St Justin Martyr and the Apostolic Fathers.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Is Only the First Book
St. Irenaeus wrote five volumes of Against the Heresies. This is only book one.If you're looking for anything in subsequent volumes (I was looking for material in book 3, for example), you won't get it in this volume.St. Ireneaus is cogent, clear, and brilliant, of course.Just be forewarned that this isn't the entire work.

4-0 out of 5 stars great insight into early oral tradition!
Irenaeus' work in refuting the Gnostics of his day provides an acute understanding of the problems facing the early orthodox church. Had Irenaues not dedicated himself I have to wonder what free-reign the Gnostics would have had as oral tradition declined and interpetation developed as a reliable understanding of truth. Irenaeus focused his attention on the Valentinian Gnostics and especially criticized the Gnostic Marcus. The notes in the book are remarkably helpful in determining what Gnostic heresies may have been preached against by the New Testament writers. Whats disappointing about the books is that the publisher only provides book one of Irenaues five book volume. The reader is forced to search on-line for the refutation volumes (the most important part) to understand Irenaeus principle view. The book is copyrighted in 1992 and part of an extended volume of ancient christian writers, therefore I'm not optimistic that further volumes will follow. I would still encourage any theological minded individual to make this book part of their library. As for the harden Catholic that previously used this book review as a proselytising forum, The translater (Dominic Unger) just lightly touches on the subject in the preface. As for Irenaeus, his argument is ment in the ecumenical sense of the Church of Christ that share the same tenets of faith. To classify Evangelicals in the same manner as the Gnostics is a dishonest exaggeration and she should have spent more time reading the book rather then writing a misleading agenda. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Irenaeus' summery of the Christian faith
"On the Apostolic Preaching" is a recently discovered work of Irenaeus, a second century theologian. Irenaeus is better known for his attacks on Gnosticism but he still has time to write a summery of the Christian faith for his friend Marcianus.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into the teaching of the early church
Assuming that this is a true representation of an actual writing, it is invaluable for all Christians in showing us what the manner of preaching was at the very beginning. Of this fact, I really have no doubt, and accept this writing as that of Irenaeus himself. Irenaeus was taught by Polycarp, who was a disciple of the Apostle John, so we have here a teaching of the preaching told by a second generation source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Execllent treatise by Irenaeus
This is a work by Irenaeus that wasn't discovered until fairly recently, so it is not included in the excellent 10 volume Ante-Nicene Fathers set. The work is essentially a summary of the Christian faith by the BishopIrenaeus (lived around 177 AD). The work 'recounts all the various deeds ofGod culminated in Jesus Christ.' It, unlike the works of Justin andAthenagoras from the same period, is non-polemical and non-apologetic.There are quite a few notes, a nice introduction, and some Greek wordsprovided in the text when the English translation provided is uncertain. ...
