4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start reading about leadership
Leadership books remind me of cooking, there are a finite number of common ingredients that make up the majority of dishes, but there seems to be an infinite number of ways to combine and present these ingredients.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not so innovative
Maxwell's concepts of what a leader is is quite accurate. However, I don't think he needed to spend over 200 pages to define what a leader is.That's what this book came to be: one long, repetitive, obvious definition for leadership.I didn't see these as laws so much as nuances of what he'd already said.

If you've never read anything by John Maxwell, then you should. And this is the best place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars first John Maxwell book I've read
As a middle manager, I found this book quite good. Not only is this book for managers, but I believe it ALL staff should read it.For those who have given negative reviews, keep in mind that there ARE people out there who've never read a book on leadership. This one is easy to read, the ideas are easy to understand. It's a great introductory book for those who think that leader is synonymous with manager. This book will help them understand the idea of leadership.

1-0 out of 5 stars The 360 degree leader
I am disgusted with Maxwell's inability to actually write a book rather he takes quotes then compiles them in the last two thirds of his book after he puts something in earlier on. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THIS ONE.

2-0 out of 5 stars I could've gained more insight from a nap.
........that "tag" is actually a bit harsh on my part........this really isn't a "bad" book (i.e. one that's full of errors).....it's simply a book filled with cute little truisms that basically anyone who reads the Wall Street Journal 4 times a year already knows.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid maxims on leadership
Leadership expert, former preacher and prolific author John C. Maxwell asks readers to savor his chapters on the essential qualities of a leader a little at a time. He suggests reading one chapter a day like you are taking a vitamin, to give the lessons time to sink in with practice. Each of the 21 traits he cites stems from a basic value leaders can use to guide their actions. This follow-up to Maxwell's useful 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is a thinner book in every way, though still nicely thoughtful. We recommend it as a source of inspiration for self-growth and reflection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for leadership development
As a university student, I initially purchased this book to review for an assignment in a Leadership Theory course, but the value I received from this text was greater than expected. Maxwell's reputation as a leadership expert is one of the reasons I chose this book, but another reason was that this book focuses not only on the concepts of leadership in general but mainly on personal leadership development. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the study of leadership or developing their own leadership abilities. I found John C. Maxwell's work to be very inspirational and very applicable to real-world applications. After having contemplated what leadership truly means and how it affects us on a daily basis, it is easier to see that its impact is all around us in some form or to some degree. As Maxwell puts it, "everything rises and falls on leadership," and anyone with the desire to do so can become a better leader. This book explains how to do it effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite short read on leadership
I have studied the subject of leadership for several years and continue to return to this book as the best short-read on the subject ever written. I read it at least once a year just to refresh myself. The stories are well chosen and the principals are sound. It is not an in-depth treatise but provides an excellent foundation for understanding the difference between leadership and management - which is greatly lacking today. ... Read more

This book was very informative and easy to read.John Maxwell wrote in a language that is very to easy to understand and kept it very interesting and to the point.I recommend this book to everyone that would like to succeed in their personal and professional life.

4-0 out of 5 stars makes you and breaks you
there is not need to get a rocket science degree to understand the magic of your attitude, keeps it high under all the circumstances no matter what and build necessary skills for the development of your own career, attitude alone cannot help you to reach the top step of a ladder but it would be plus if you have it with other skills, skills are important to take you the place you are dream about. It is a good book if you can pick up one or two good things out of it and implement them in your life, you will see the big difference between the Difference Maker and the Difference Taker. The rest is history.

Highly recommend it, whether you are a leader, or just an aspiring one.

    Editorial Review

During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of true emotion." From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success.Read more

... a book that changes lives. The character of Socrates impacted my life in many overt and covert ways, all for the positive. I read the book over ten years ago and the residue of its impact still lingers. The characters are lifelike and genuine, and their dilemmas resonate with much of humanity. I strongly believe that anyone can benefit from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Translation for Our Times........
Simply the best translation of the Tao Te Ching available. Stephen Mitchell has done us all a great service by bringing this ages old book of wisdom to the modern era.

1-0 out of 5 stars stephen mitchell presents the tao te ching
The tao te ching is a great book, I'm not giving that a one star review, I'm giving mitchell's interpretation of it one star.As many other reviews have stated, he doesn't speak chinese, so this translation is comprised of his reading other peoples' translations and what he thinks it means. He then tries to modernize it and make it accessible to 21st century americans.I like the old world feel of this book, you don't need to change swords to nuclear warheads, I know what a sword is.At least though, this change makes sense, some chapters Mitchell changes so much, that the entire chapter loses its meaning.A couple chapters made no sense, so I went to the back of the book where he tells what parts he changed, and then I was able to understand exactly what Lao Tzu intended to say.Don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on reviewers
It's funny, people are giving it 1/5 because it isn't a "literal translation." It has to be the exact translated words by someone who is "scholared" for it to be worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars More rock-solid, real world, common sense advice from John Maxwell
I once praised a book as being rooted in common sense and a friend asked "If it's common sense, why did you need to read the book?" So true, but with all of the demands and distractions in this world, we sometimes lose common sense as we react immediately and emotionally to situations. This is one of Maxwell's slim "gift book" editions from Countryman...high quality paper, 5 X 7 size, 120 pages. The chapters are: Commit to Your True Dream, Believe In Yourself, Think Differently, Take Action, Develop Great People Skills, Stay With Your Strengths, Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone, Never Stop Learning, and Never Give Up. In keeping with his normal style, Maxwell accents the book with quotations from Harry Truman, John Quincy Adams, Alan Alda, Joyce Meyer, and many others. It's a refresher course in why you're here and what you can accomplish if you're willing to focus your effort. A similar book...also excellent, also recently released...is Ben Stein's "How Successful People Win." I highly recommend both books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good study bible
This is a pretty good study bible. It covers a lot of fascinating leadership concepts using scripture to draw out principles that Maxwell teaches. There are many instances of leadership passages or points that are skipped or missed, whether intentionally or unintentionally. So it is NOT an authoritative or exhaustive work on leadership issues in the bible.

Author John C. Maxwell follows his solid 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork with this book, which provides 25 essential "principles" for fostering interpersonal relationships. Maxwell uses poems, quotations and stories about such varied individuals as Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr., Dale Carnegie, Barbara Walters, Pete Rose and Billy Martin to enliven his short chapters about the small, important steps that build better relationships. Unfortunately, the book seems slightly forced, stretching its theme to cover overlapping and somewhat arbitrary principles. Still, its broadly based, motivational stories make it spiritually uplifting. While this entry is not as compelling as Maxwell's work on leadership, we believe it will be very useful to those who want to build stronger friendships and aren't sure how to start.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Behavior-Changing Read
This is a thought-provoking read.I must admit I had some difficulty accepting that the problem is my fault--:)--but after I got over that hump, I was wide open to receive the teachings in this book.Very practical yet eye opening--you will learn some things about yourself, and you will grow and be better for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable book that can applied to any aspectof life!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read!
I am glad I read this book - it doesn't tell you things you didn't know (At least not to me) but it puts it in such a light that it really has a more permanent impact. The writing style is easy to read, and almost rhytmic & poetic. It's a quick read, a good read for emerging leaders, or for anyone who wants to better understand true secrets to success......I recommend it if you come across it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Attitude determines Altitude
This is a great book.I am a big Maxwell fan, and I loved reading this book.It is a compilation of chapters from some of Maxwell's other bestsellers. This book serves as a great reminder of how important our attitude is in every area of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars 90% attitude and 10% situation!
There is NOTHING more important than attitude when it comes to success in leadership! No, I mean it. In general this is just an all around true point: success is 90% attitude and 10% situation. How you deal with things as a leader has a profound impact on those around you and once again, John has produced a wonderful work that conveys all kinds of fantastic points that will help you develop and grow as a leader. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff without all the fluff
Maxwell does a great job of breaking down the essentials of Leadership without turning it into rocket science. While a bit wordy, it is still an easy read and easy application. My organization is now using this as the basis for leadership development with front-line supervisors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaty enough to read this year and next
This is a great devotional book, and I am not usually one that finds devotionals set up like this very interesting. It is set up to have a reading each day during Advent, Christmas and through to Epiphany, and the readings are all written by people like C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Kathleen Norris, Annie Dillard, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, etc. This is no, "What was the innkeeper thinking" sort of advent reading book.It is thoughtful and insightful and has a lot to say that ties into the preparative nature of advent, that is the preparation for the messiah's return. The writings vary in length and type from scholarly writings to musings to poetry or introspection. The readings are meaty enough, too, that you could certainly read them this year and again next year and they'll still be good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than Advent and Christmas reading.
I really shouldn't write a review yet, because I haven't finished the book. I'm doing so in hopes that people will buy the book in time to use it this year. This is an excellent book of essays, a few poems, and some sermons. There are some very "heavy hitters" in the mix--check out the table of contents. I have only read through December 2 so far, but it has been a very rewarding journey just a few steps down the path. I particularly love the piece by Karl Rahner (1904-1984), a German Jesuit and theologian. It is very cutting edge theology for its time and even for today, and it reads beautifully and powerfully. Henri Nouwen is also excellent, along with Sylvia Plath's poem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding and Being Your Purpose is your ONLY task in life
Ever wonder why it is never enough for some people? Well... that is what happens when you have no clue what you were meant to be in this human life. Without vision the people perish said Moses in the desert. And without a vision for your life from a place of higher spiritual self awareness ... you are at risk of getting way off course and living somebody else's idea of whatyour life should be. DO NOT DO THIS! This book was invaluable to me during college and my life purpose still plays out today. It is my north star ... read this in combination with Martha Beck's Finding Your North Star... and reach for your very own star! Love yourself first too,

In 1941, a brilliant, good-looking young man decided to give up a promising literary career in New York to enter a monastery in Kentucky, from where he proceeded to become one of the most influential writers of this century. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Call of the Wild
This story of youthful conversion strangely remains the most famous of Merton books, and is usually called a "classic spiritual autobiography"though it is really neither.Which is not to say it lacks value; it is evident that decades after publication it retains its original power for many.Doubtless its status owes a lot to its partial inarticulateness, and the obvious youth of its subject.Others at about the same stage of life may justly understand it and prize those qualities, and gloss over its faults. It has a certain unabashed personal quality that cannot be faked.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rich in detail and compelling in plot, Thomas Merton's life makes for a stellar read.
Upon reading the spiritual autobiography of Thomas Merton, the immediate details of his life that boldly jutted out and painted the overall portrait of the man was his controlled yet cyclonic whirlwind of pell-mell inconsistency and the overall amorphousness of his ever evolving life up into manhood.
