5-0 out of 5 stars "The Practice of Prayer"
This book is one of, if not the, best contemporary books on prayer, well suited to the ordinary Christian like me.While most other great books on prayer teach you the kinds, disciple and practice of prayer, "Prayer" by Philip Yancey talks about what prayer IS.As part one of the book states, prayer is essentially "keeping company with God".
5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced
I am a person who has greatly benefited from prayer after major injuries from an accident. Each day I live in the balance of acknowledging the miracles God did through the many prayers of my family and friends, yet living with the limitations/pain my injuries continue to force on me. I found this book to be nicely balanced between those two.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tough topic
Mr. Yancey tackles one of the more difficult aspects of Christianity and deals with many of most common questions and concerns about prayer. He assures us, several times, that we simply don't have all the answers, but he bases his beliefs on what Christ did and said. All his discussions are supported by Biblical texts. The material is challenging, however, he breaks it up with stories and quotes from many people working through the same enormous issues: why was that prayer answered, and that one not? for example. The book is also organized and chapters titled such that you can reread sections as life situations warrant. In the end, it is simply encouraging. There's no formula, no perfect prayer, no checklist. At a recent talk, Mr. Yancey was asked how we know if we're doing it right. His answer will stick with me: if you're praying, you're doing it right.Combined with his encouragement to keep on keeping on, this book on prayer should be inspiring to all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yancey at his Best
When you can take on as time honored and occasionally time worn topic as grace -- and make it sing with fresh insight -- you've accomplished something.Yancey does exactly that.He revisits the overused language of 'Amazing Grace' and freshens it up with his typically honest and forthright manner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I have enjoyed other Yancey books, but this one is the best I have read so far. This book should be read by every human being on the planet. He points out the irony of forgiveness and how many of us refuse to forgive yet our salvation is only possible because of forgiveness. This is an inspiring book and really put things into perspective for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the ages
One of the best books I've ever read. It's needed in today's day and time to counteract performance-oriented thinking.Grace is Amazing, Undeserved, and Free, and Yancey explains it all. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

An old adage says, "God created man in His own image and man has been returning the favor ever since." Philip Yancey realized that despite a lifetime attending Sunday school topped off by a Bible college education, he really had no idea who Jesus was. In fact, he found himself further and further removed from the person of Jesus, distracted instead by flannel-graph figures and intellectual inspection. He determined to use his journalistic talents to approach Jesus, in the context of time, within the framework of history.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars News Flash -- Jesus was Jewish
Yancey strikes again. This time he presents a very down-to-earth portrait of Jesus that forces the faithful to think more about Jesus' humanity than we are often comfortable with.Jesus was after all a real person who lived in a real world -- a Jewish world.I love it when Yancey makes me think about things I don't really want to -- but need to.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
A must read for all of us who have ever wondered about the meaning of Jesus' ministry, why He said what He said and did what He did.Written in easy to understand text this book is well researched. The author shares with us many of his early doubts about Jesus - doubts that most of us can relate to.This book goes a long way in erasing those doubts and puts the ministry of Jesus into a much clearer focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who is Jesus?
On the cover of my book is a banner that says, "Voted Best Book of the Year!" Now that ten years have passed since the original publication, perhaps it is time to proclaim, "Best Book of the Decade!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaty enough to read this year and next
This is a great devotional book, and I am not usually one that finds devotionals set up like this very interesting. It is set up to have a reading each day during Advent, Christmas and through to Epiphany, and the readings are all written by people like C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Kathleen Norris, Annie Dillard, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, etc. This is no, "What was the innkeeper thinking" sort of advent reading book.It is thoughtful and insightful and has a lot to say that ties into the preparative nature of advent, that is the preparation for the messiah's return. The writings vary in length and type from scholarly writings to musings to poetry or introspection. The readings are meaty enough, too, that you could certainly read them this year and again next year and they'll still be good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than Advent and Christmas reading.
I really shouldn't write a review yet, because I haven't finished the book. I'm doing so in hopes that people will buy the book in time to use it this year. This is an excellent book of essays, a few poems, and some sermons. There are some very "heavy hitters" in the mix--check out the table of contents. I have only read through December 2 so far, but it has been a very rewarding journey just a few steps down the path. I particularly love the piece by Karl Rahner (1904-1984), a German Jesuit and theologian. It is very cutting edge theology for its time and even for today, and it reads beautifully and powerfully. Henri Nouwen is also excellent, along with Sylvia Plath's poem.

I thought that this book was very informative and insightful. It presented many good points in common areas of Christian lives and our present lack of grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appreciate the honest escape this book provides
I read this book over a long Christmas break and it was the perfect book for the season. Grace is an amazing thing and Mr. Yancey captures it so well in his words. Mr. Yancey's writing style is very comforting like a good conversation. I recommend this both as something to read and something to give as a gift to someone that needs a reminder of the good in this world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but it got redundant..
I thought this book had some very insightful looks into grace, and its role in Chrisianity. The problem I had with this book is that pretty much all the insights could have been fit into a 20 page paper.I ended up having to really force myself to finish the book because about half way through the book, I got really bored with the rehashing of the same ideas.Worth reading, but I would probably just stop halfway through, you will have gotten everything the book will offer you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A New Perspective on Pain and Suffering
This book does nothing to remove pain from a believer's life, and it does not give any instructions or quick fixes as to how to do so.What it provides is a new perspective on pain, one from a God-centered viewpoint rather than a man-centered viewpoint. The author sympathizes with the reader who may be suffering, but then continues to give new, biblical insights that identify pain as a blessing from God to a sinful, broken world.
1-0 out of 5 stars China's Victory Over the USA will make you ask THIS QUESTION
The Chinese victory over the USA will make you ask this question. What's wrong with America?Thousands of things.USA dishonors Christ through its sexual immorality.Look at the rampant pre-marital sex in America.Don't tell me that America is a Holy Nation or a Christian Nation. It's not.China is more pure.We illegalize homosexuality and forbid pre-marital sex.China is a more pure nation.Christian writers don't seem to care about the purity of America.Mr. Philip Yancey hasn't written one book on it.I rest my case.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obviously Yancey is a Pop Psychologist who has No Respect for the Bible
Mr. Yancey has no respect for the teaching of the Bible.God is always there when it hurts. In fact, God allows hurt.Look at Book of Job.God allowed Satan to kill Job's children (!!!) and tempt his wife away from Job and give Job a horrible disease.God was always there. In fact, God was a part of the plan to CAUSE Job to suffer. Why?On a whim.Satan said that Job would lose faith if disaster struck him, so God said, "Okay, give it your best shot!"Sometimes, God sends disasters into your home for a whim, for a wager with Satan. This is the lesson from the Book of Job.Sometimes, God Himself brings pain and death because Christians refuse to uphold the interests of the Kingdom of Christ.Look at the book of Jeremiah. It was God who chose to kill Israelites, destroy the Jerusalem Temple. In fact, Jeremiah specifically states that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who was not a believer, was anointed by God to bring destruction. It's like God anointing Bin Laden to destroy America. That would be the similar analogy in terms of anointing a hostile unbeliever to destroy a believing nation. The Bible is clear that God chose King Nebuchadnezzar to destroy the Jerusalem Temple and kill Israelites. And anyone who opposed King Nebuchadnezzar opposed God Himself. How does this apply to Bin Laden. This is how seriously God takes desecration of His House, the Christian Church.God will raise up an unbelieving enemey to destroy America if America desecrates God's houses. And opposing this anointed enemy would be opposing God Himself.Mr. Yancey should think seriously about what God teaches about suffering.God gives suffering when believers desecrate His house.God sends death and destruction when Christians refuse to uphold the interst of Christ. This is an important lesson for America to learn. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic
When I find myself going back to this book time and again after almost 10 years it tells me something.Yancey asks questions few will voice out loud -- Where is God when it hurts? But more than that he offers sensible biblical insight.Touch issues approached with a tender spirit.
1-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Yancey Should Submit to Christ's Rule
Mr. Yancey has written no book that helps Christians submit to Christ's rule on earth. It's clear that Mr. Yancey is not interested in submitting himself to Christ's rule or helping others to submit themselves' to Christ's rule.Maybe he's working for the anit-Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World of Medicine Through Spiritual Eyes
Note: This review refers to an additional book, "In His Image" by the same author that I consider a "companion" to this one.4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating
I highly recommend all of Dr. Brand's and Yancey's collaborative efforts. This one is fairly short and readable and the emphasis here is on the intricate workings of the human body, and what it suggests to us about how the Body of Christ works or should work.Just the chapter on the properties of bone is fascinating enough to warrant reading this book. The gift of movement, or the protection of our skin, is something we most likely take for granted.Dr. Brand will rob us of that conceit! He also gives examples from his groundbreaking work in treating leprosy to show just how precious a healthy body can be.The real message, however, is that God's design for his church is not accidental- just like a working body, it is intricate beauty, strength, and order in dynamic motion!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Case for Design in the World!

1-0 out of 5 stars God is God in Tragedy
Philip Yancey needs to understand that God is everywhere.God is in Hurricaine Katrina.God is in control of the complete destruction of property in New Orleans. There is no place God is Not.It is important for Christians to "Find God in Tragedy."If your loved one died in that mine explosion in Kentucky, you have to humble yourself and find God in that tragedy.A true Christian must be able to pray:"Thank you God in killing my husband in that mine tragedy because I recognize that you are in complete control of the world as the Creator.Give me faith to accept your will for my life."
5-0 out of 5 stars nice collection of essays
One of the hardest things about reading or reviewing a book is to accept it for what it is, rather than what it isn't.If you are looking for one of Yancey's highly focused theological/apologetic works, this isn't it. If you want one of the most insightful minds in the Christian community looking at the way God is at work in the world, this book is for you.

    5-0 out of 5 stars O.T.Excerpts &Studies
I found this book; "The Bible Jesus Read" by Philip Yancey to be an enlightening & insightful interpretative study of the books of Job, Deuteronomy, Prophets, Ecclesiastes & Psalms.Yancy gives history & meaning to make these O.T.favorites relevant and deeply profound. I found it gave me a renewed interest in the O.T. and an instantaneous connection; meaningful for anyone desiring to enrich their New & O. T. studies. It is abundant in the many messages that we yearn for. I'm so glad one of our participants suggested this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars How Do You Tell A False Teacher?
A true Christian teacher teaches the principles of the Holy Bible -- both the good and the bad.False teachers teach only what people want to hear.Yancey is like a false teacher. He doesn't want to teach anything that makes people uncomfortable -- such as the Holy God of the Bible ordered King Saul to annihilate all the Amalekits -- women, children, disabled included! This is our God!The God of the Bible we worship. If anyone has problem with the genocidal God of the Bible whom we worship as our God, then he can go to Hell.He will go to Hell because he doesn't believe in the God of the Bible who ordered King Saul to kill women, children, and the disabled.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate
Yancey's problem is that he follows fads. It's like in the movie, Good Will Hunting. Most of the people studying an issue will follow the latest fad. That's what Yancey does. The title, "The Bible That Jesus Read", insults Jesus Christ, who is God -- the Second Person in the Holy Trinity. The Old Testament and the New Testament clearly teach the Holy Trinity.Gospel of John chpater 1 shows all Three Persons of the Holy Triity operating. It is because people like Yancey has taken the helm of Christianity -- he is the editor of Christianity Today -- that America's Christianity is in grave trouble.Ordaining homosexuals? What do you think about that Yancey? Is that a part of the "Bible that Jesus Read"?Ridiculous!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read and share! I won't be the same.
"The Gift of Pain" was recommended to me by my sister-in-law who read it while in a book club with a nurse. I have now recommended it to everyone that I know! It's a rare find to read a non-fiction PAGE-TURNER that not only edifies you intellectually but absolutely changes the way you view your body and health, in general. There are a few parts that would turn a weak stomach so get ready, but just get through those and keep reading. This book will make you laugh, cry, and absolutely open your heart and change you - emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. Don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars So many would benefit
This is a five-star book if ever there was one.All about the author, Paul Brand's amazing life and his theories about pain.Because I'm experiencing chronic pain, I found his book useful and was taken by his compassionate, commonsense approach gained from decades of life working with leprosy patients among others.I ended up with enormous respect for Dr. Brand and believe much of what he knows about pain to be true:fear, loneliness, helplessness, and isolation increase pain.Dr. Brand is a committed Christian, but you will find his book useful whatever your faith.Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey not a read!
If ever there was a book that deserves accolades, this is it. And yet no amount of superlatives could express just how wonderful this book is and what it does to you. It is not so much a book about pain as a book about life. It evokes a sense of gratitude for life that will stay with you for life. How fortunate it makes you feel when you read about both the misfortune and the courage of others. And how the true meaning of life becomes apparent. Without ever telling you what to think, Dr Brand makes you think. He makes you realise that life, with all its challenges, is the great gift. There were times when reading this book that I found myself so moved emotionally that I had to stop reading, almost as if I had to take a deep breath and contemplate what I had just read. And then, slowly, I'd pick the book up again and re-read that moving passage before continuing on. This book is a journey more than a read. It is a journey you will never forget. Please buy it. ... From a Catholic standpoint, one of the best works I have ever read on the relationship you want to have and should have with our Lord Jesus Christ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Help in Studying Christology
Phillip Yancy does a superb job of bringing the reader face to face with Jesus Christ from a fresh perspective. As Pastors, we must understand the culture we live in to minister to that culture effectively (in the worldnot of the world).Yancy effectively views the life of Christ from thatperspective!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get to know the Christ that died for YOU!!
This book, by Phillip Yancey, has really touched my heart. He expresses with such impact the Jesus that died on the cross. He talks about the Beatitudes in a way you may have never thought about before. He is not shyabout talking about his own sins and how he personally approachestemptations.Read this book if you want to find the only physicaldescription of Jesus in the Bible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
While I am a fan of Yancey's work, I often find that his books tend to get a little tedious and repetitive about 2/3 of the way through.I also find myself wondering when he's going to stop rehashing the same doubts that he seems to always write about.Having struggles in one's faith is normal and good, by I often think he gets on a gerbil wheel and won't get off.Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised that this book didn't follow this pattern.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Excellent Author
Evangelical Christians are well known for throwing around `relationship with God.'But what does this mean?We have relationships with our spouses, with our children, with our bosses, with the clerk at 7-11, but all of these relationships are different. How does a relationship with the almighty, omniscient God work?As Evangelicals, we also like to throw around the term, "It's not religion, it is a relationship."But what does that mean?Yancey (the master question asker) asks these questions and many more questions that Christians ask themselves at some point in their `relationships' with God Almighty.
1-0 out of 5 stars Reaching For God Involves Opposing Jews
What America's Christians need to understand that getting closer to God involves opposing the Jews. Why is this the case?Because the Bible teaches us this.Jesus Christ opposed the Jews and called them the "Children of the Devil" (Gospel of John) and St. Stephen opposed the Jews and said that all Jews are evil.St. Paul warned against Jewish converts to Christianity who tried to make Christianity pro-Jewish.Why do some people ignore all this important teaching in the New Testament.Being anti-Jewish is integral to Christian holiness. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Yancey Needs to Understand Christ and What He Requires
Often, books that address hurts in life is about me, myself, and moi.And this kind of pop Christianity has killed America's Christianity. When difficulties come, it's not about what we can do for Christ? It's about what we can do for ourselves? This is not the attitude of the Bible.Yancey needs to go back to the Bible and humble himself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
This book honestly has changed me so much. I first found it while I was on a mission trip and I do belive I read the whole book in about an hour. During some parts (okay almost the whole thing) I cried because of how touching grace really is. The book is an amazing tool to help you understand the craziest thing...grace. Grace... how can you even begin to describe the most remarkable thing God dispenses on us? Phillip Yancey has a great begining! This is going to be my coffee table book forever. That and "A Tale of Two Princes" by Eckart Zur Nieden (Go look at it on here), learning about God through a child's perspective is what it's all about!

5-0 out of 5 stars If I could give just one book to anyone, this is it.
I give books.A lot of them. But if I had to choose just one to give, this would be it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Unique.
I'm really not the type of person who enjoys reading or looking at visual editions of books. I love to read and usually would rather read the original book and all it's words than look at something that's sort of the book, but not really. Don't get me wrong, I like pictures and illustrations really help me learn concepts better, but I prefer original texts to an inferior copy. I can't say that about WHAT'S SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE? THE VISUAL EDITION. This book captures the spirit of Yancey's book to a tee and instead of being a cheap rip-off, feels and even reads more like a companion. Beautiful pictures, powerful stories, well planned illustrations, and thought-provoking quotations are all woven together to display the power, mystery, and love of God's grace. I normally wouldn't recommend a book like this at all. However, this book is so well put together that I recommend this book to just about anyone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the Author's Best Work
I have read several of Philip Yancey's books. He writes in a way that is very compelling for me and frequently makes some very tangible connections with the reader that make you walk away viewing your spiritual life or Bible text in a totally different way. Here however I was disappointed that large sections of this short book are almost repeated verbatim out of other books he has written.I also thought that the proposed answers to the question, "Church: Why Bother?" were not that clearly stated or summarized. This book is no where near the caliber of "The Jesus I Never Knew".

4-0 out of 5 stars Church as a Personal Pilgrimage
Yancey writes in his usual straightforward, honest style, drawing upon his own childhood and journey as a "church goer." It's an easy read. You can read it in an hour. He reminds us that despite its failures and blunders, the church is still the main avenue God uses to nourish ourselves and each other.Just as no one has discovered another way to learn to walk except to do it and pick oneself up after falling, so the church body keeps on going.God seems to put up with us, and we should put up with each other.I guess it boils down to what someone told me as a teenager."When you find the perfect church, don't join it.You'll spoil it."

5-0 out of 5 stars Yancey inspires us again!
As usual, Philip Yancey explores the issue of church worship in detail. He boldly surveys the subjects of corporate worship, fellowship, rejection, acceptance, Biblical studies, etc.He is one of the best Christian writers of this generation and continues to amaze me with his profound and prolific insights.A very interesting book to say the least. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great and terrible, hit and miss
In his 'Rumors of Another World,' Yancey runs hot and cold. At his best, he's nearly a Thomas Merton, with a flare for observations that strike the reader as being fresh and deep. At his worst, he's more of a John Eldrege, superficially predisposed and irrational. [Referencing Amazon's 1-5 star rating scale] a five-star chapter is here often followed by a one-star chapter. Wordy, meandering incongruities fade suddenly to brilliant, penetrating soliloquies, the sublime meets the almost ridiculous. But when Yancey is good, he is very good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Evidences of an unseen reality
How is that the people with faith in Jesus Christ see evidence everywhere that this life is a precursor for a life to come that is more real and rewarding? Why do those without that faith not see what the faithful Christians see? Then there is that space in between in which we want to believe, but just need to see a little more proof.Such is the nature of faith. The Bible's epistle Hebrews defines faith as being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another Me, Me, Me book by Yancey!
Mr. Yancey better clean up his act. This is another me, me, me book by Mr. Yancey. He has no respect for Jesus Christ and the honor of the Name of Christ. What book of substance has he written besides all the pop-psycho-theology junk.Has Mr. Yancey written one book to protect the integrity of the church against those who try to destroy it.For instance, has he written one book against homosexuality? This is the most important issue today in America's Christianity and the greatest insult to God.Hasn't he heard of Sodom and Gomorrah? What does he think will happen to America?Does he think that God will pleasantly turn aside as America's Christian churches ordain homosexuals? What does Mr. Yancey think about spiritual battle.Obviously he is blind as a bat when it comes to spiritual war.Even when homosexuality is the most important issue facing the church, he refuses to stand up for Christ and His honor and protect the Body of Christ. What a man writes shows a lot about his character and goals.Certainly, Mr. Yancey cares only about making money and not about defending the Christian Church against those who attack it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating guided tour.Highly recommended.
This devotional is a terriffic, fresh approach to reading through the Bible in an overview or summary format. Each day's reading (using a modern translation) is accompanied by brief and informative text from Brenda Quinn or Philip Yancey, and then 1 or 2 questions to ponder. Both Quinn and Yancey have a reader-friendly, intelligent manner of writing that invites one to think rather than telling one what to think.
5-0 out of 5 stars bonding experience for me and my husband
I bought this book as a NY resolution and LOVE it.My husband and I read from it before we go to bed and on long road trips stemming deep conversations. We feel exhilarated, educated, and much more.Regardless of personal beliefs, this book explains the Bible in our generation's terms, meaning a churchless many (including myself). This book makes it fun and easy to learn about the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspired
This wonderful book of inspiration, reflection, and key scripture from each book of the Bible; Genesis to Revelation, has been comforting to me. From beginning to end this marvelous book is enlightening and exciting reading. The gifted authors have produced a much needed companion to the Bible.
