1-0 out of 5 stars Not what is depicted with the cover view
In searching for this title I found there were 60+ versions out there so I had to rely on both editor and cover pictorials to determine the one I was seeking (which was modern English, full page pictorials, and covering both Christian's and Christiana's journeys).Since I had the one I wanted in hand, I put a lot of faith in the cover visual. What I got was as version without full page pictures, small print and in the older dialect. From what other pilgrims have told me, the modern English version is essential in understanding this work. I donated it to the local library in hopes it will still do good.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are born brainwashed
Anyone who is a serious follower of Jesus Christ and understands what he is saved from (the wrath of God) will find this book to be an immense treasure house of comfort and fatherly instruction. Those who think that this book is a tool for brain washing have it all backwards. The brainwashing occurs when we are conceived into this world in our sin and rebellion against our Holy Creator, by our very nature. Born into a vacuum, we'd all rebel. The gospel is the news that Jesus Christ endured God's wrath in our place and is ever making us more like himself. We are no longer in the bondage that we were born into. Praise be to God!This book is a wonderfully wise parable of a Christian's experience in this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars FInding One Self and Fulfilling a Dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bookaholic
Sarah Breathnach writes about the simple pleasures in life in such a way that it makes you want to try all the wonderful small joys she speaks about in the book. Even my husband picks it up and reads the daily messages. He comes out with a smile on his face with some kind of comment on the subject matter each day!

5-0 out of 5 stars more refreshing thoughts for a thirsty life
This book continually gives me encouragement and motivation. It helps to point out all the good things in life without having to go shopping or changing anything in my life but the way I see things.I enjoy this book very much and recommend it to anyone looking for inspiration and validation. The author highlights all the wonderful things in a woman's life, and literally celebrates the fact that we merely exist. She helps with her terrific sense of humor, and her ability to admit her faults that are not unlike our own.She reminds us of positive things we have that we may miss in the day-to-dayness of our lives. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Brennan Manning preaches a false gospel - don't be fooled.
Fr. Brennan Manning is a Franciscan priest who attempted to marry without being dispensed from his vow of celibacy in 1982. He has since peddled a false gospel that is built around the idea that God's pardon is unconditional - a euphemism for saying that you can be forgiven for your sins without repenting and amending your life. This is a lie, and a defense mechanism Fr. Manning has evolved to assuage his guilty conscience. If you really want to seek the Mercy of God, I suggest you read "Divine Mercy in my soul", the diary of St. Faustina, avaulable here on Amazon.com. God's Mercy is endless, but you cannot be pardoned if you are not sorry; Fr. Manning's false gospel will do you no more spiritual good than it has done him. He needs your prayers and your pity - not your money or your reading time.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your life if you let it
It's hard for me to describe this book; it's been instrumental in my own personal growth. Suffice to say, Manning has nailed the single-most pervasive problem in today's church: the utter lack of self-worth in the presence of a perfect God.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Faith in the God who once loved you???
Ok, then this is the book for you. I actually purchased this one on the cd set... and wow... what an awesome, intense & passionate series. After several listens, and once on a personal quiet retreat... this served up just what was needed. It does start slow, and is filled with intense, intellectual verbage, and you may need to remember it is worth the digging through to get to the meat. I have shared this with my entire family, and highly reccomend it to anyone who may have forgotten how dear, how precious & how much our Father in heaven loves us. Be prepared for a journey into your faith.. again... If you have lost hope in the God of creation... enjoy this journey with Manning. It will bring back into the arms of a loving Father... Indeed, you are Abba's Child! ... Read more

Editorial Review

In undertaking a spiritual life, we must make certain that our path is connected with our heart, according to author and Buddhist monk Jack Kornfield. Since 1974 (long before it gained popularity in the 1990s), Kornfield has been teaching westerners how to integrate Eastern teaching into their daily lives. Through generous storytelling and unmitigated warmth, Kornfield offers this excellent guidebook on living with attentiveness, meditation, and full-tilt compassion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with heart!!!!!
This is an excellent and sensitively written book by a former Buddhist monk and clinical psychologist. Jack Kornfield uses stories and lyrical language to weave a portrait of an authentic spiritual life characterized by insight, compassion and wisdom. He makes Buddhism accessible to modern people and shows us how it is relevant to modern life. This is no small task and Kornfield pulls it off brilliantly, with warmth and an entertaining style. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for deeper meaning in their lives whatever their specific beliefs. It is also an important book that connects Western psychological thought to Eastern worldviews.
5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books I have ever read
I highly recommend this book.It has changed the way I look at life and spirituality.Nearly every line in the book is filled with profound meaning.Additonally, the style is clear and the ideas accessible for anyone who is truly interested in spiritual fulfillment.I am at greater peace with the world since having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightfully clear, engaging guide for beginning meditators
Jack Kornfield is a humble and humorous guide when it comes to incorporating eastern practices into one's prayer and/or contemplative life. He is down to earth, emminently practical, and tremendously encouraging. A strong advocate of developing a disciplined practice of meditation, Kornfield has a very nice way of communicating this necessity without scaring the novice off. He has a great reserve of wonderful stories and anecdotes which make his suggestions spring to life. I've been a college chaplain for 20 years, reading and recommending books on spirituality for all of those. Kornfield is a exceptionally fine teacher and I consider this book his best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "They give you a book to read"
I keep this book on the shelf with my favorite books. I think of this as a wisdom book. It's the 'lost' book from Richard Bach's Illusions. I usually pick this up when there's something bothering me, or something big is going on in my life. Sometimes I open it up, and get nothing (or so I think at the time). Then, there are times when I open it up and amazed at what I find! For instance, I was trying to decide WHY I should go into a certain career. I was back and forth over "should I do it or not?!" -I picked up this book, and this is what I read:
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book.
What a great little book! Not too big, and not a lot of content, but very powerful and thought-provoking words. These "proverbs" are from the previous Bach book Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, which is also a book I highly recommend. Page after page, each with an idea or thought that is at once simple and logical in so many ways, yet very insightful and inspiring. Very nice indeed. The suede-like cover is a nice touch also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Messiah's Handbook:Reminders for the Advanced Soul
Was surprised with the book's size but it proved to be quite handy to carry with you.Anything I have read of Richard Bach I have enjoyed.Would recommend this book to anyone who would like quick "advice" or something to ponder on for one's own continued learning. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice
I used to be bad with people and studied the heck out of books like "How to Win Friends and Influence People." There's solid advice in this book, but I too would have liked more practical step by step advice. For instance, I'm bad at keeping track of what my subordinates' special strengths are. I would have liked more advice on what to look or listen for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Also an Important Reference and Commentary
Do not view this book as merely a "defense of the resurrection" - a number of more slender volumes can accomplish that feat. This book is instead a significant historical and theological treatment of the idea and doctrine of the resurrection within a wide variety of ancient sources. While it does result in an affirmation of the historic Christian position that Jesus indeed rose from the dead, this book also serves more broadly as an historical and theological reference work.
2-0 out of 5 stars Traditionalist Propaganda, Sadly
Sadly, Wright throws up the facade for his Evangelical readership that Early Christian resurrection stories should be taken as literal and historically defensible.Should we expect anything different from someone socio-religiously tethered to his own conservative community and market?Wright foists upon his readers technical propaganda aimed at certifying the myths of his modern Western religious tradition. His often grossly dishonest use of primary literature characterizes his tendentious manipulation of the ancient literary data. This work is not an open historical inquiry, but an apology sold to his already deluded market. The one redeeming value of the work is that Wright surveys a large array of ancient literary sources, and so one gains a substantial list of primary references for investigation. If, however, you wish to read a far more balanced work on the topic, might I recommend G. Riley's Resurrection Reconsidered.Riley is a true Classicist and scholar of nascent Christian traditions, not a traditionalist or apologist.
2-0 out of 5 stars There's an Obvious Explanation being IGNORED
As usual, NT Wright has missed the Correct Answer in his quest to shore up the fading structure of Christianity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of Mohammed
It is a sad fact that in these darkened times, the relationships between the world's Abrahamic faiths is at an all-time low. Each day it seems that Jews, Christians and Muslims are only too willing to go to war with each other and claiming God is on their side, when all three faiths profess to believe in the same God.
1-0 out of 5 stars Mohammed is far from perfect
What I learned from this book is that Muhammed was a prophet who harnassed the spirtual hunger that lay in all Men's hearts to create a coherent and powerful (but far from perfect)religion that is Islam.
3-0 out of 5 stars Secular Viewpoint
Karen Armstrong writes her biography of Muhammad (pbuh) from a very secular, 20th century point of view (although she tries very hard to see all sides of the story). She is also very confused about certain things, believing that Islam teaches that Satan will be forgiven on the Day of Judgement.Overall, it's an ok biography, but there are better ones available. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A slim book in several ways
As sometimes happens when buying a book over the internet, the "packaging" (including the book's description) can be misleading. Case in point from the above book description: "Here is an extraordinary exploration of the wealth of the world's spiritual traditions combined with dialogue from the heart about the differences and similarities between their paths of wisdom."If there's an extraordinary exploration of the wealth of the world's spiritual traditions--it's not in this book. In fact, only about 25 pages of the book even remotely address this subject. And, to be more specific, the main similarities (entitled Points of Agreement) get a whopping 2 pages, while other similarities and differences are meagerly scattered throughout the rest of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars hyper critical
I've read this book several times and I think it is a nice introduction to Christian Apologetics.I see many reviewers bashing this book's simplicity.Well, it was written to be that way.The information is presented with much more detail in Mcdowell's "evidence" books, this book is like an overview. The liar, lunatic, or Lord arguement is a valid one, if presented properly. Once you show the validity of the Scriptures, there are no other options. Legend has no place, as the new testament contains oral traditions that can be accurately dated to within 2 years of Jesus' crucification, and the whole new testament written by first hand witnesses or a close associate of a first hand witness. Some one claimed that a possibility was that a man named Jesus might have never existed.Just know, you are in the SEVERE minority here. Most skeptics even agree that he indeed existed.Anyways, there are better apologist out there, but this is an excellent introduction for a spiritual seeker( it can be read in a couple of hours). There is much more info out there if one truly wants to seek. Not everyone does, as it's rather uncomfortable to have their unbelief threatened, so they hide behind so called intellectual hurdles, putting all their effort into asking questions, instead of finding answers.

This is a good little book. It's strongest characteristic is that it's to the point and efficient, in the way it presents its case/information.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Science and Spirituality Collide
This is a completely fascinating book. The Dalai Lama has completed an amazing discourse comparing and contrasting the worlds of scientific and spirtual thought. Ultimately the goal of this book is to make the scientific community and the "world" community think about their present and future roles in the development of science, its' ethics and the reduction of suffering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly, an Ocean of Wisdom
The title "Dalai Lama" is sometimes translated into English to mean something like, "ocean of wisdom."The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, proves--yet again--that he is deserving of this title.I was curious to see how a religious leader would handle the vast topic of science. While he humbly concedes that some of the complexities of scientific thought are beyond the scope of his knowledge, he delivers a book on science that is inspirational, possibly a literary first.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of the Spirit is the Most Powerful
The Dalai Lama's wisdom in one book on the whole nature of science, ethics, are as potent as they are profound. A significant questioning from a compassionate heart on the role of higher spirit in the application of science. In a world dominated by out-of-control ego ... this book is a demonstration of why complete freedom from illusion is the only guarantee of inner peace. One of those books to read over and over again. We owe it to ourselves to conquer Mara (illusion). The world and its treasure of riches and power in the misguided context are not real. The Dalai Lama so beautifully explains why. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Instructive Bible!
Dr. John Maxwell's "Leadership Bible" represents an inspiring and instructive Bible/Guide to be used to train and inculcate pastors, elders, and laypersons in the art of biblical leadership, just as the title suggests.
5-0 out of 5 stars Leadership Made Spiritual
Maxwell succeeds in creating a new way to experience leadership principles and the bible. I have used this as a guide for my youth group's leadership program (highshcool juniors and seniors) and it has been perfect. This is an excellent gift idea for anyone who has interest in leadership and believes their christain faith is critical to their approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you think!
The entire time I read this book all I could think about was "What if this happened to me?" Very good reading! Can't wait to read the sequel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Last Light
I watch for new every title Terri publishes. Each book of her many series stands alone, yet keeps you hungry for the next in a series. As soon as I finished Last Light I immediately ordered Night Light (Book#2.) Others have written about the Last Light story line, basically I concur. But I had a couple of issues with the reality side of such an event. The biggest disconnect with me was the failure of all engines with a computer chip, from cars to home generators. That's certainly true in theory. But I can't believe that even in a smaller community a few bright mechanics or engineers could not tinker with these things and figure out a way to by pass the fried electornics. In Book 2 someone finally gets a brain and realizes that older cars (classics) still run. In the Branning's upscale neighborhood, don't tell me that someone didn't have an old Porche or restored '57 Chevy in their garage.Granted, it would take a lot of tinkering to get a modern SUV running when the chip(s) goes bad, but a couple of shade tree mechanics with a lot of time on their hands and a big incentive to succeed could certainly gerry-rig a bunch of direct wires and fire that sucker up.It might run rough, but it would run.Same for the home generator. For the sake of the story itself, which was about the people dealing with the crisis, it was probably better for the author to ignore these ideas.Still, it hurt my reading enjoyment as I placed myself in the character's shoes. Oh yeah, I went and stocked up on batteries and other "Hurricane items" after reading the book.... just in case!Lou Sauer, Raleigh, NC

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE AS YOU KNOW IT . . . GONE. NOW WHAT?
I'd heard of Terri Blackstock. Knew she was a Christian fiction writer. Figured she wrote prairie romances.
