5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best Study Bible
I really love my Max Lucado Inspirational NKJV Study Bible. It's a wonderful study bible with many sidebars of life lessons of Lucado's teaching guides. This the only one I use because it helps me to have a better understanding of the Scriptures. Each Book of the Old and New Testaments are laid out in an instruction manual style. All chapters are boldly titled to explain the situation for each one. The Life Lessons examines more closely the situation, makes observations, gives inspiration, makes application and gives further explorations of other scriptures throughout the Bible. It's chalkful of footnotes of many reliable references. Throughout this study gem are more inspirational ancedotes from Grace, Forgiveness, Suffering and Victory to God's Love, Hope, Prayer and Faith. And many more worthwhile inspirations that will bless your life. Even more, it has one hundred greatest thoughts, an index to selected readings, a dictionary with topical concordance, acknowledgments from many great references from the most notable names in Christianity. There's even a place in the back to add your own notes. I'm sure this is the only study bible you'll ever use. I find it to be the most comprehensive, enriching masterpiece of the Holy Bible yet. I would definitely give this as a nice gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Study Bible
I found this to be an excellent study tool. Max Lucado does not give a commentary on the verses. Instead he gives a life application lesson with the scriptures and a devotional thought. XCELLENT!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inspirational Study Bible, the very best ever
I love the Inspirational Study Bible, mine is NKJV. It has truly opened the word up to me as never before. I love reading and studying from it. It helps me understand a lot more of what was going on at the times the books were written. Mostly it helps me apply the Word to my own life. It has spoiled me, I have hunted several times for it in leather bound, I sure wish they would make it. I would get 1 for every member of my family. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Community-Building - Timely and practical
Palmer offers hope for a 21st century expression of community - intentional, connected and open.Offering a way to break through barriers internally (indidually) and within the community (collectively), Palmer's method provides help and hope from a spiritual perspective - free of advice, full of hope and honoring diversity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate Intelligence
In A HIDDEN WHOLENESS, the highly respected writer, lecturer, teacher and activist, Parker J. Palmer describes the creation of a "circle of trust," a specific kind of community that welcomes the soul and helps those involved to hear its voice. Over the last several years, Palmer and his colleagues at the Center for Courage and Renewal [www.couragerenewal.org] have forged, tested, and re-worked the practices and principles of creating such circles. This book reflects both Palmer's own transformation from living a divided life to finding the courage to live divided no more. He reflects on his own and others experience as they have moved into circles of trust to live lives of deep integrity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Parker J. Palmer
I ordered it for the purpose of a daily devotional. I am a seminary student and have read other things from Palmer. He does a great job of introducing us to an undivided life with integrity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth!
Pastor Hagee has written a book and Nuclear War and Irans coquest to aquire Weapons, and true to life, look at the news today. I support John Hagee and I believe he is the most informed Pastor on tv and tells the truth!

1-0 out of 5 stars Hagee is a heretic
How do you make a career preaching about the end of the world? We've been in the "end times" since the death of Christ. Hagee has been using fear and emotion to take advantage and brainwash people for such a long time it's crazy, any Christian with an average knowledge of the bible can see that Hagee has indeed made up his own gospel. To all my fellow Christians, stop reading and buying into this end of the world hype, concentrate on your own spiritual growth, and witness to others. Don't be so quick to hate Muslims either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book is great! That's not unusual considering it's another book by none other than Pastor Hagee.I've read almost all of his other books and have never been disappointed. This one is no exception. A must read if you really want to know what is happening today!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
This book explains lots of things about making your dreams come true. I'd recomend it for anyone who likes adventure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life - An Adventure!
I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first -- a book about Ordinary, leaving Land of Familiar, to follow his Big Dream? Come on!I'm an adult!I don't need this childish stuff! However, it took me only a few pages to see myself in Ordinary, and to understand that I was living in Land of Familiar.I'd also passed through the Wasteland and had seen my own giants.I got a lot from the first part of the book, but it was really the second part, where Bruce compares the quest of Ordinary to his own life and the lives of others. He asks questions of the reader which made me ponder my entire life in an amazing new way! His writing style is completely understandable and his references to Bible stories and spiritual learnings were right on.If you believe there is a Higher Power in your life, and you have not been living the life you love, get this book! It certainly clarified some things for me and helped me get back onto the right track with my Dream. It is an inspiration!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody is a somebody!
I consider this short parable a masterpiece. The parable is a story about an ordinary person that wakes up one day with a big dream.Throughout the book, Wilkinson portrays the challenges, setbacks, and rewards of stepping out of our own way to pursue our big dream. If you are looking to step out of your comfort zone, then this is the book for you!A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maxwell Leadership Bible
This is an excellent Bible for Christians and especially for leaders. It is easy to read, the format is good and the notes really give insight.I would recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Maxwell Leadership Bible
The book is much more complicated than I expected.I really like John Maxwell but I was expecting the book to be something I could sit down and read all the way through.Instead, it's the whole Bible.I will use it but not the way I had thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good study bible
This is a pretty good study bible. It covers a lot of fascinating leadership concepts using scripture to draw out principles that Maxwell teaches. There are many instances of leadership passages or points that are skipped or missed, whether intentionally or unintentionally. So it is NOT an authoritative or exhaustive work on leadership issues in the bible.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good effort, some disappointment
Although Karen Armstrong has made a good effort and has exhibited a wide range of overall scholarship, "The Great Transformation" was a disappointment when it came to her understanding of Ezekiel's vision. She sees the Merkava (chariot) as a "war chariot", written in response to the Babylonian exile, and as being a "terrifying, confusing vision" (Page 398). Since Ms. Armstrong's book is on the Axial Age, it would have been better for her to approach this vision from the standpoint of a meditative experience that could bring a person into the awareness of oneness. There are elements of this vision that are common to the meditative experience wherever it arises, within whatever religious tradition it takes place. Ezekiel's vision is a description of and a metaphor for this experience, and not a "war chariot." For a scholarly elucidation of this subject, Aryeh Kaplan's book "InnerSpace," Moznaim, 1990, discusses Ezekiel's vision in detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly educational and fascinating
This is a very enlightening book about the development of religious traditions in China, India, Greece and Judea/Israel (and later on Arabia), from the dawn of history until the time of Mohammed. It centers on a period in each of these cultures that is called the "axial" age, which is when the most profound enlightenments occured. It's fascinating to learn the history of the development of different belief systems - both familiar and unfamiliar.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for the faint of faith
Karen Armstrong is a prolific author who has gone far beyond the faith that was taught to her as an aspiring nun in the early 1960s.I've enjoyed a few of her earlier works (Through the Narrow Gate and A History of God) and I picked this up with great anticipation. I was intrigued by her assertion that a short span of history (800-200 BCE) marked a dramatic leap in the beliefs of several religions throughout the world at a time when they had limited or no contact with each other. Her writing is both gripping and persuasive and I was very impressed with the book.

Nouwen's meditation on the Gospel parable and Rembrant's painted depiction of the Return of the Prodigal Son is amazing.Touching the heart with his honest and transparent identification with each of the three figures central to the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Tale of Holocaust Horror
Beyond and essential read, Night speaks to the reader about fundamental questions at the heart of the human condition.A powerfully moving autobiography, the story of this teenager's journey through the most horrific death camps of Nazi Europe, strips away discussion of anti-semitism and hatred, to present the raw suffering of individual humans, stuck in situations beyond their control. From the establishment of a ghetto in Elie's home town of Sighet, the reader can only watch with growing horror as the young man and his family are swept up in the Holocaust.Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Gleiwitz: some of the most infamous places in modern human history, rise around Elie, as we watch him stripped of absolutely everything. The reader is swept along helplessly, as Hitler's "Final Solution" unfolds - death marches, starvation, selections, cattle-carts full of people, torture, floggings, mass-murder - and as Elie is gradually reduced to nothing more than a 'hungry stomach'.
5-0 out of 5 stars must reading
this is a disturbing work in that it recounts a man's experience of the nazi death camps. Warning: this book will shake you up mentally, and emotionally. It is not for the faint of heart.Yet, it is a must read because of the exposure it gives to humanity at it's worst and humanity under it's worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation
The short novel Night has emotional power not only because of the dark subject matter, but because Elie Wiesel is a gifted writer who deftly reveals the spiritual and mental anguish of the main character.Generally considered autobiographical, the account follows a young man who feels he is losing not only God, but his humanity as the Nazi machine ravages Europe. The novel itself deserves 10 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to mindfulness meditation
I'm sad to see a reviewer be so judgmental about this audio - especially one who claims to respect the teachings of the Buddha. These guided meditations are accessible for anyone, without the baggage of what some might call a religion - Buddhism. (For me, it's a philosophy more than a religion, and I have learned more about Buddha and his teachings because of these audios.)As cassette tapes, these audios were my introduction to the practice, and they resonated for me then, and still do after 13 years.
1-0 out of 5 stars a dumbed-down version of old Buddhist texts - ex. Satipatthana Sutta
It's very disappointing to read/listen to individuals who take old buddhists texts and re-interpret the texts as their own.Kabat-Zinn borrows so much and rarely mentions Buddhism.Pitiful.For those critically evaluating the book/audio, it's useful to note that many of these new ideas are actually old ones; simply because no one has a copyright on old buddhist texts doesn't imply that we can without impunity stealthily borrow their ideas without citation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed by the lack of creativity brought to this expensive set of cd's.I'm sorry to say, "Guided Mindfulness Meditation" was silent, and slow going.Metaphors, stories, nuggets, and music were missing. My first purchase of Dr. Kabat-Zinn's work was the audiotape, "Wherever You Go There You Are".Dr. Kabat-Zinn did a great job here through his use of voice, music, and text.He was able to transport me to a peaceful state, his soothing voice lyrically illustrating relaxation metaphors.Soothing music was the backdrop for his interesting approach mixing together fact and story.I was hoping "Guided Mindfullness Meditation" would be just as inviting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Christian Fiction Yet!
This series, particularly the first book, has been life-changing and is the best written Christian fiction I've ever read! It is terrific historical fiction, and while I think women are Francine Rivers' main audience, even my husband read this series and recommends it to his male friends. The reading is not difficult, but it's a powerful story! Be warned - there is a description of the seige of Jerusalem at the beginning where a few of my friends have stopped reading, but do read on! The story continues to build, until the end where I was telling myself "O my gosh!!" over and over for hours when I finished. (Don't read the end ahead of time!) I also strongly suggest that you avoid reading the introduction for the second book that is in some later versions of the first novel! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to steal
I teach at a jail; I purchase many books for my students there. If a book is particularly good, someone steals it.The better it is, the faster it gets stolen. This whole set went missing as soon asword got out that it had to do with early Christianity, The Coliseum, soldiers, man-eating lions, etc.Truly it is a great series, and I hope it is still circulating in one of the jail pods.I like the lessons the books teach, plus they're exciting to read.(All of Francine Rivers' Christian-based books are well-done.) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Common-Sense Approach To Adversity
Rabbi Kushner's new book, "Overcoming Life's Disappointments" is a good friend to have if you've got some adversity in your life.He takes Moses, who spent 40 years wandering in the desert with his people and then was forbidden to enter the promised land with them, as his model on how a good person copes with trials. His advice is that life continues to have good things in store for us even after our dreams are shattered, if we don't let ourselves become hardened and embittered but keep our minds and hearts open. This sounds obvious enough, but it's easier said than done.Rabbi Kushner provides many stories from his long career to explain how we can cope.As a self-confessed admirer of Sigmund Freud, he's not big on the mystical or intuitive aspects of religion. He's more of a "duty is its own reward" kind of guy.But he is a preacher of what C.S. Lewis called "the Tao": the basic "way" that most religions have in common. If you are looking for essential answers, Rabbi Kushner is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rabbi Kushner gives a few pointers in resiliency
One of the hardest things for anyone to learn, no matter where you are in life, or how much money you have, is coping with times when things don't turn out as you expect. Some people never recover, while others seem to sail past a disaster with hardly a break in stride. The trick isn't in what the disaster is, but how they've handled it.

This is certainly a marvellous book to read! In fact, this is my first book from John C Maxwell's collection. Iagree with the author: "The difference between average people & achieving people is their PERCEPTION of & RESPONSE to FAILURE", although I am inclined to add that there are a few other equally important factors as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me enormously

The book strated out very well, and could have been something great. Instead it turned out to be another spiritual ( if you call it that) Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
1-0 out of 5 stars I Wish there was 0 Stars
Like others, I had high hopes for this book.Sadly, I was disappointed. As a voracious reader who keeps 5-6 books going at the same time, I usually force myself to finish even the worst of books in the hopes that perhaps they just had a bad start and will improve further on.This was one of the most poorly written books it has been my misfortune to purchase; it was a complete waste of money. The action was confusing and puerile...written at junior-high level, at best.I have tried to force myself to finish, but I'm halfway through and reading it has become a chore. This is one book about which I will not know the ending, because I honestly don't care what happens! If you feel you must read it because of the good reputation of these 2 writers, then do yourself a favor and check it out from the library; don't waste your own money on it.I wish I could get a refund.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doctrinally off.
I've read Dekker's Circle Trilogy and loved it (except for the ending.)Also, Peretti's "Oath" and "Visitation" were both outstanding books with great analogies. But I was taken aback at the doctrinal error in this book. #1. Christ Jesus is very God and very man...He is not an angel and He is not female. #2. Our sin debt was owed to God not to satan.God is the one who was wronged. Christ's sacrifice was to absorb God's wrath...not satan's. We owe satan nothing.Christ certainly owed satan nothing. This book's core is anti-Christ and I was very saddened that such an interesting tale ended as it did...with the characters bowing before a female calling her The Son of Man and The Light Who came into the darkness and then affirming that she was an angel. I have read C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" and am fine with alegory and fantasy writing that depict Christ's sacrifice...as long as it is left doctrinally sound. Sure, Aslan was a Lion... to parallel Christ as Lion of Judah but Lewis didn't cross the boundary of using actual titles that belong soley to Christ Himself and he certainly didn't say Aslan was an angel. John 1, 1 John 1 and Hebrews 1 is a great place to start to see that that line just shouldn't have been crossed. What if people who don't know any better read this book and believe that Christ Jesus, The Son of God, very God, very Man, Creator, Lord, God is an angel? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Only Love can Heal the Soul
When things fall apart it is not the mind that will ultimatley save us but our heart and soul. Our intellect can serve our best interests when it conjures up strategies that align with our hearts. That said, there is a reason why it often takes a tragedy to push someone to reconnect with God and divine inspiration. Not talking about religious addiction ... but rather that miracle of surrendering to the flow and what a more divine plan has in mind. Chodron goes to the "heart" of the matter ... the broken heart that is left in tatters .... where the healing is first and foremost demanded. The cure for the pain lies in the pain ... and in harnessing a greater spiritual force. A must read!

I happened across this book by accident when a lot of things in my life were truly falling apart.Pema Chodron will some day be reknowned as a very significant spiritual leader, if she is not already. She has an amazing way of bringing spiritual truth down to the executional level. You can do these things, and doing them helps - a lot.I can't recommend this highly enough to anyone who is struggling.
