Editorial Review

Award-winning reporter and author Lee Strobel (Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A weak case and a cheap trick
The author of this book claims to be a converted atheist asking tough questions from atheist perspective in forms of interviews with experts on Christiannity. However from the onset of the first interview it becomes very obvious that the whole thing is a pretense. After asking initial question (challenge to faith) and receiving first answer, any answer, he immediately assumes the role of wideeyed student and fails to give any real challenge in the follow up questions.Any freethinker could do much better job making those "experts" to work a little harder. The whole scheme resembles a martial arts movie where cohorts of opponents run towards the hero with thieir guards down only to be knocked down.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well done and an easy read
4 1/2 really. This is a very well written and researched book.I am very impressed with the quality and the style that Mr. Strobel uses. This is an excellent book for believers and new Christians.Skeptics should read this book as a basis for understanding the true defense of Christianity.Believers will be comforted and skeptics will find good challenges in the pages of this work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another solid work
After reading "A Case for Christ" I read this book.Lee does an excellent job of interviewing the right people to answer each objection to Christianity. This book deffinately enhanced my faith.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maxwell rephrases the rules for treating people right
Author John C. Maxwell follows his solid 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork with this book, which provides 25 essential "principles" for fostering interpersonal relationships. Maxwell uses poems, quotations and stories about such varied individuals as Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr., Dale Carnegie, Barbara Walters, Pete Rose and Billy Martin to enliven his short chapters about the small, important steps that build better relationships. Unfortunately, the book seems slightly forced, stretching its theme to cover overlapping and somewhat arbitrary principles. Still, its broadly based, motivational stories make it spiritually uplifting. While this entry is not as compelling as Maxwell's work on leadership, we believe it will be very useful to those who want to build stronger friendships and aren't sure how to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Behavior-Changing Read
This is a thought-provoking read.I must admit I had some difficulty accepting that the problem is my fault--:)--but after I got over that hump, I was wide open to receive the teachings in this book.Very practical yet eye opening--you will learn some things about yourself, and you will grow and be better for it.

Editorial Review

An old adage says, "God created man in His own image and man has been returning the favor ever since." Philip Yancey realized that despite a lifetime attending Sunday school topped off by a Bible college education, he really had no idea who Jesus was. In fact, he found himself further and further removed from the person of Jesus, distracted instead by flannel-graph figures and intellectual inspection. He determined to use his journalistic talents to approach Jesus, in the context of time, within the framework of history.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars News Flash -- Jesus was Jewish
Yancey strikes again. This time he presents a very down-to-earth portrait of Jesus that forces the faithful to think more about Jesus' humanity than we are often comfortable with.Jesus was after all a real person who lived in a real world -- a Jewish world.I love it when Yancey makes me think about things I don't really want to -- but need to.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
A must read for all of us who have ever wondered about the meaning of Jesus' ministry, why He said what He said and did what He did.Written in easy to understand text this book is well researched. The author shares with us many of his early doubts about Jesus - doubts that most of us can relate to.This book goes a long way in erasing those doubts and puts the ministry of Jesus into a much clearer focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who is Jesus?
On the cover of my book is a banner that says, "Voted Best Book of the Year!" Now that ten years have passed since the original publication, perhaps it is time to proclaim, "Best Book of the Decade!"

5-0 out of 5 stars A message for our time
I only have one thing to add to the other reviews about this book and it is this; I really believe that this is a message the Holy Spirit is sending out to the Church in different ways these days. I hope we will have ears to hear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good News (For a Change)
In The Myth of a Christian Nation, Boyd makes a direct challenge to those who call themselves Christians but have adopted Caesar (worldly) attitudes and tactics in a wrongheaded and tragic attempt to bring about the kingdom of God in America. The attempt is wrongheaded because, "[Christian] power to speak into people's lives and into the culture has never been given by Caesar, and it therefore can't be taken away by Caesar.Civil religion worries about such things, but not the kingdom of God."182."You can no more have a Christian worldly government than you can have a Christian petunia or aardvark."54
3-0 out of 5 stars Underdeveloped
In starting, I'd like to say that I really wanted to like this book. The title itself its appealing, and to an extent, I agree with some of Boyd's comments. But as much as I would have liked to nod my head in agreement through and through as I read the book, it turned out that I simply could not do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jessica's review of the above book:
This devotional for couples has been a delightful read thus far. Please note, however, that my husband and I have only read the Sun., Mon. and Tue. devotional.Every day you and your spouse read a 1-2 page story or article and one bible verse relating to the same. The reading is followed by questions that you both answer to help you get to know each other's thoughts on certain topics that come up in marriage.I think the questions are an important part of this devotional, as they really create the opportunity to discuss topics you may not have brought up otherwise. After you read the story and answer the questions there is a short prayer that you and your spouse pray together. This is an easy way to introduce praying together into your relationship. This devotional has the potential to really solidify the bond you already have or create one, if needed. Please note that if you are looking more for a devotional that will allow you to complete a bible study together you may want to look for something else. This book definitely prods you to include God in your relationship, but it doesn't specifically focus on "bible study".Also, you may note that each daily devotional will only take about 15 min., which is good if you are tried for time. Please remember this review is only based on three days of reading; I have no idea if the book is going to do a complete turn around.Enjoy and may God bless your marriage!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that saved my marriage
When my husband and I came across this book a couple years ago, we were in a pretty bad spot. The strain of both of us working and trying to raise a family had brought us to the edge of a very unhappy place, and we were unsure of where to turn.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEST DEVOTIONAL EVER WRITTEN!!
If you only own one couples devotional, please let it be this one.I bought this book for my wife for her birthday and she thought it was a silly gift, that is before I began to read it to her nightly while we were in bed. This book has truly strengthened our marriage and our communication. The stories are insightful and uplifting and the time you spend with your spouse will be worth every penny.Your love for one another will grow.God bless. ... Editorial Review

Even at his most irate, Jimmy Carter projects cool, communicating with a poise that commands attention while gently signaling to opponents that they better do their homework before mounting any sort of debate. Perhaps that's why the former president, Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and bestselling author ranks as one of the planet's most respected voices in the areas of human rights, diplomacy, and good government. And when a clearly agitated Carter suggests America is on a slippery slope, globally speaking, as he does throughout Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
Even though I am biased towards Jimmy, I was a little disappointed by this book. While some sections are very succinct and Jimmy is clearly writing from the heart, for $15 one would expect a little more analysis and explanation of the major issues of the day.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book for our times
I bought this book from the UK amazon under the title Faith & Freedom. It is an eye-opening account of how religious fundamentalists have managed to leave the impact of their worst attitudes of intolerance, self-righteousness, and belligerence on American domestic and foreign politics, something that concerns me as a UK citizen, because that which significantly affects the most powerful country on the planet is liable to have repercussions elsewhere. But after its eye-opening, soberingcontent, the book ends with a more gracious tone, encouraging Americans to return to a renewed commitment towards their own best ideals in a way that is reflected in the country's dealings with the rest of the world. May this happen, else America's reputation could undergo irreversible damage. Hopefully this excellent book will exert a wide and good influence. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An accurate, honest and true account of the state of our country.
Absolutely the best non-fiction book-on-dvd I've ever listened to. President Carter gives an accurate and honest account of the political, social and physical changes currently dividing the American society under this current administration. I remember as a young girl hearing a White House biographer say that it would be years after President Carter's administration that we would appreciate his intelligence and the contributions he made to peace and the strength of the nation. I think this book brings that prediction to fruition. What a shame that we don't have a leader who cares about the future of the country and the people's well being.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read!
I am glad I read this book - it doesn't tell you things you didn't know (At least not to me) but it puts it in such a light that it really has a more permanent impact. The writing style is easy to read, and almost rhytmic & poetic. It's a quick read, a good read for emerging leaders, or for anyone who wants to better understand true secrets to success......I recommend it if you come across it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Attitude determines Altitude
This is a great book.I am a big Maxwell fan, and I loved reading this book.It is a compilation of chapters from some of Maxwell's other bestsellers. This book serves as a great reminder of how important our attitude is in every area of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars 90% attitude and 10% situation!
There is NOTHING more important than attitude when it comes to success in leadership! No, I mean it. In general this is just an all around true point: success is 90% attitude and 10% situation. How you deal with things as a leader has a profound impact on those around you and once again, John has produced a wonderful work that conveys all kinds of fantastic points that will help you develop and grow as a leader. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review

If you have always assumed that Christianity and Buddhism are as far apart philosophically as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all living things. And in both he finds an emphasis on living practice and community spirit. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
Let me start this by saying that when I first read this book, I had just started delving into the subject of "other religions".So, if you are in that position, wanting to see what other belief systems have to say, READ THIS BOOK.He discusses how Christianity and Buddhism are related in their beliefs.Truth is truth no matter who says it.Being able to see how Christian truth is similar to, or the same as, Buddhist truth was very enlightening. Before reading this, Buddhism was a foreign object to me.After reading this, Buddhism was still foreign but it made me want to read more about Buddhism to become more familiar with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unfounded assumptions challenge the validity of the author's points
While I do not have a problem with the basic idea of comparing the two religions of Buddhism and Christianity, I find this book invalid because the author forms his points on unfounded assumptions of the Christian faith. For instance, he denies the divine nature of Jesus without the use of backup sources--including the Bible. He then proceeds to use this fallicy (according to the Christian faith) to "prove" a connection between the two religions.Instead of an unbiased comparison of two beautiful religions, the book reads like a thinly veiled attempt at Buddhist evangelism by someone who thinks highly of the Christian religion but does not know much about it.I appreciate the author's openmindedness and fondness for Jesus, but I cannot accept his extreme misconceptions about the Christian faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars Question of Faith
Thich Nhat Hanh brings together the Buddha and Christ showing the difference and simularity of both ways of living.Christians should not fear the eastern philosophy and the reverse is also true. You can incorporate both into your daily existance as there are no real clashes between the two.Buddha is just an enlightened person, not a son of god.Jesus will always be the teacher of the christian faith and the son of god.Thich Nhat Hanh points out the fact that the Buddah is not a god.People follow a way of attaing peace with Buddha and also follow a way to attain salvation throught Christ. There is room in the world for both teachings to coexsist together not one trampling over the other.I find his books relaxing, and easy to read and understand. In practice of Mindfulness you receive instruction on quieting your mind making full awareness possible to receive teachings from Christ in the present moment and a new understanding.I enjoyed this book and its meaning to me about the misconceptions most Christions have about other ways to explore life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it technically is logically inconsistant, but that's OK
It's true and important to understand that De Mello often communicates through contradiction. For instance, he tells us "The only way someone can be of help to you is in challenging your ideas." (Awareness pg. 35) No doubt, all of us can think of countless other ways and specific situations in which someone could be of help to us in a way other than by "challenging our ideas". However, this is a style De Mello has intentionally chosen in order to battle the sea of misconceptions that he sees over flooding our society. Rather than go through the semantic hoops that are technically necessary in order to make the subtle distinctions that he is after, De Mello chooses to "shock the truth out of us". He says things that are not intended to be completely accurate, and are sometimes even logically inconsistent, but rather contradict our culture's common assumptions, forcing us to either totally dismiss what he says or, if we read with an open mind, to consciously think about the point that De Mello is trying to communicate.
5-0 out of 5 stars the good from
the good from many religions, yet easy to read, creates a new understanding. I didn't know about this Fr. DeMello until a reading assignment, and now I have read most of his 9 books. Sermon on the Mount, this one deserves several readings. MAL ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to study your bible
IT is the best book on how to study the bible.I wish I had started with this book before I finished 96 hours in Bible courses. It would have helped me in all my other courses. It is the best system I have ever run across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kay's study methods explained
This book is well organized and explain's Kay's Inductive Method very clearly. It is easy to read but does require practice to become second nature. Her methods make Bible passages come alive with the background and context as well as the message and underlying application in our daily lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is What You've Been Looking For!
I just completed reading this book and I can't get enough! If you are ready to roll up your sleves and study the truth of God's Word this is for you.It gives you pratical and sound skills for digging deep into the vast riches of God's word. I have studied for years but this is a systematic approach to Bible study and it allows you to first search out the scriptures for themsselves and then refer to other resources such as comentaries and word study guides as a source of enrichment rather than a foundation to you understanding and interpretation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars kool-aid stock is soaring
I must admit that a misguided person gave me this book. Worse yet, she expected me to swoon and join her on my knees and pray for rapture.
1-0 out of 5 stars More hype, more hysteria . . .
. . . and more nonsense.
5-0 out of 5 stars What will it be like in heaven?
This book answered that question for me.I know that the writers of this book or anyone else on earth does not truly know what heaven will be like, but they did an amazing job of illustrating what heaven might be like.I have read the whole Left Behind Series and I have to say that The Rapture was one of my favorites. The imagery in this book gave me such an excitement of what it will be like the day the Jesus returns for his children.I absolutely loved this book and the Left Behind Series.I am not an Eglish major or anything close to it and I know some people may complain about plots, and charcter development, and all this and that, but if you are a Christian and want to read a great series, then Left Behind is for you.I also recommend this book to non-Christians who have any interest at all in Jesus Christ and his return. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a Wonderful, New Perspective
This second Conversations With God book is amazing!I found that it pushed me to the edge of my thoughts, ideas & comfort zones - providing me with a foundation from which to question myself about how I really thought the world was doing, and more personally, how I thought I was really doing. It also brought to the forefront our personal & collective responsibility in creating the "individual" lives we lead, as well as the way our societies, countries & world create - as what we create, we experience - that is our free will.
3-0 out of 5 stars Still have questions to be asked but some answered
This book takes off where the book one ended. The author is convinced that he is having a conversation with God. If you don't believe in God or are a fundamentalist Christian, don't read this book. If you read it thoroughly, you will begin to understand God better and know that he is loving, kind, compassionate, forgiving, etc. All those good things that we don't hear in an unforgiving, greedy, sex-obsessed world today. I was unsatisfied with God's answers on sexuality. I think God doesn't want sexuality to be exploited or misused by us but we do anyway. Sex without love is nothing more than something to do. Love with sex can be a beautiful thing between two people regardless of their gender. I don't think God cared about that as much as we do. He wants us to love each other not just physically but emotionally as well. THere are lot of relationships based purely on sexuality that when the sex isn't acted out, the relationship can't work together. If you can't hold a conversation with your partner, do you really think this person is the right one? We need to listen to God more. We need to stop thinking of ourselves and see the whole picture of the world around us. I'm glad that the book reinforces my belief that we never die and that we return over and over again to suffer in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
"Conversations with God, Book 2" is a great, mind opening book. I learned a lot, and enjoyed reading it. The dialogue is interesting and beneficial for everyone. I loved the first book, and I love this one too.
