2-0 out of 5 stars Little content, lots of cliche
I really enjoyed "The Purpose Driven Life," so I was excited when I found out that our small group would be going through this other Rick Warren book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very motivational
This is a very good book by Rick Warren. This book is for people who are tired of trying to change their lifes on their own steam. This book is about using the power that God has given us to turn our lives from stressful to peaceful. It is about getting the best quality out of life. It motivates to reader to make the right choices to live the best life they possibly can. I was very motivated after this people and I know very many people who have read it after I gave it to them to read who were inspired to change their lives and who actually did it. They didn't pick up their lives on their own strength though. They learned to rely on Gods strength to lift them up and change them. It is a very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!
God's way to change those stubborn areas of your life that won't seem to change. This was written before Rick Warren wrote The Purpose Driven Life. It's worth reading. I've given it to both adults and teenagers to read. very clear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair coverage of a very difficult cluster of topics.
Since this book deals with evil, some parts are difficult reading. This is a fair, balanced scientific exploration of evil from minor to maximum, i.e. demonic possession. Not based on sensationalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Shall Set You Free
In The People of the Lie, Dr. Peck taps into human evil. He presents case studies of his own and shares with us in depth of their evil, depression, madness, and narcissism. In the case of Bobby, a depressed fifteen-year-old boy, he had a brother who committed suicide with a rifle. His parents gave him his brother's suicide weapon as a Christmas present: this was an act of evil. Bobby was a victim of his parent's evil.

Editorial Review

Dallas Willard, an acclaimed theologian and professor of philosophy at the University of Southern California, fulfills the longing of many Christians who want to live as true disciples of Christ rather than distant dabblers. Likewise, he scoffs at consumer Christians who are simply banking on admittance to heaven as their payoff for attending church. Or worse still, those who use Christianity to advance their political agendas rather than their spiritual ones. But this is not a scolding book. Rather, Willard devotes his efforts to discussing specific and inspiring ways to develop a discipleship to Jesus--not as an act of sacrifice or even one of spiritual luxury--instead, as everyday people committed to the teachings of Christ. "The really good news for Christians is that Jesus is now taking students in the master class of life," writes Willard. "So the message of and about him is specifically a gospel for our life now, not just for dying. It is about living now as his apprentices in kingdom living, not just as consumers of his merits." 4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gems
This is my second attempt to read a Dallas Willard book. This is my first successful completion of a Dallas Willard book!He has a dense, dry reading style that is difficult to plow through. But I could see as I was reading this book that there were spiritual gems to be found throughout, so I plugged away through it.It took me about six months to finish this 400-page book, but I'm glad I made the effort.(Six months because I had to find times where I was in the right alert, diligent state of mind to read it.) 3-0 out of 5 stars Missing the mark
In this book Dallas Willard presents the life of the Christian as a disciple of Jesus. He attempts to mediate between evangelical and liberal perspectives and provide an approach to the Christian life brings out what both perspectives have missed. While containing occasionally nuggets, this book (from my perspective) misses the mark at several points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book, Bar None, I Have Ever Read
This is a life changing book, not one meant to be a quick read, but rather, one to be read bit by bit, and then mulled over. It brings to life the Sermon on the Mount, explains so very well the kingdom of God and its characteristics. As I read this book, I began to understand God's overall plan for humankind in a new way, and I have begun to live accordingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect End to the CWG Trilogy
I have really enjoyed reading all of the books in the Conversations With God trilogy.I've found that they've led me to consider "new" possibilites, expand my thought processes, and ultimately to look at my life & the lives in others in a whole new light.
5-0 out of 5 stars God's Friend
God has told us that there are 2 emotions: Love and Fear. Those people that put love in their hearts will understand and accept what God has told us through these books. Those people that put fear in their hearts will continue to be afraid of change and find it easier to blame others for their decisions in the lives that they have created for themselves.

RENOVATION OF THE HEART: A READER ANALYSIS
5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
Dr. Willard is very thorough in his writing which makes for some strenuous reading, but remains very rewarding throughout.Dallas really drives the point home that "apprentice" is a superior term to "disciple" as far as our relationship to Christ should be.You realize that "putting on the character of Christ" is a cooperative process between you and God in that he supplies the grace enacted through our obedience.

5-0 out of 5 stars My adopted family!!!
These books and the story of the people in Mitford are the dearest I have read in a long time....Jan Karon's writing style really makes me want to get back to the happenings in Mitford as soon as I can!!I have even ordered book seven - will keep these on my bookshelf so I can visit every now and then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a series I can leave on my coffee table...
I agree with several other reviewers in saying that this is a departure from my usual book choices. But let me say that I have throughly enjoyed every book. While some may argue that Mitford is idealistic and couldn't possibly exist in the real world, I would ask to see their reading lists. Most of us read to "escape" the real world so why would I want it in my books?!?
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series that you will not want to put down!
Mitford is the kind of place that we would all love to live.... a slpeey little town in the mountains where you know your neighbors. I recommend buying these books... and curling up in your favorite chair with a warm blanket and cup of hot chocolate! Turn the phones off and slip away... I guarentee that you won't want to come back! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That you should bear fruit!
Bruce Wilkinson does a masterful job of taking the reader through the parable of the vine and the branches in John 15. I appreciate his faithfulness to the words of Jesus' parable and his insight into the true meaning of this parable. This book gives the reader some very practical steps to take in order to draw closer to Christ and to be more fruitful in the Chritian life. I highly recommend this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great insights, but...
I was given this book for my birthday about two years ago. John 15, the passage on which this book was written, is a very important passage for ALL Christians. Wilkinson managed to write a very engaging and interesting book with great insights. I have benefited from reading this book.

I find this book so inspirational and read something from it every day. Brother Lawrence has tremendous insight into the question of how to get closer to God.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately boring
I'm a very spiritual person and I was expecting this CD to provide daily inspiration and help me to remember the very few things that are important in life.Unfortunately, for me at least, the CD is rather boring and not very inspirational.I'm about 30 minutes in to it and have decided to stop listening to it.Fortunately I have a Christian radio station that does a lot more for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple but Powerful Message
This little book packs a wallop. It contains a simple but powerful message: to live in contact with God, one need only hold Him in mind, or carry on a mental conversation with Him. The reason why Brother Lawrence's book is so transforming is that one can feel that he practiced what he preached. As he describes the process of practicing the presence, the reader is drawn into the gossamer web of the author's own experience. To begin this practice, all we have to do is read this book. We are given a boost at the beginning; the rest is up to us. Take this book on retreat, or pick it up whenever you are feeling spiritually dry. It will open your heart and nurture your soul. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of My Bible Studies for 15 Years
I have had 12 DYNAMIC METHODS OF BIBLE STUDY which I received from Billy Graham's ministry in 1990. I assume this book is a revision of the other. My RYRIE STUDY BIBLE and this book are the heart and soul of my personal Bible study since I am a layman who was brought up in the Catholic church. I felt led by God to see that the Book Survey Method, the Chapter Study Method and the Book Synthesis method all taken together formed a complete blueprint for studying a complete book of the Bible. My best study was the 3600 page study that I did on the Book of Ezekiel. When I got bored with the book studies, I looked up the topical study method. So, I have 25 of these book and topical studies since 1990.

Originally written by Campbell in the '40s-- in his pre-Bill Moyers days -- and famous as George Lucas' inspiration for "Star Wars," this book will likewise inspire any writer or reader in its well considered assertion that while all stories have already been told, this is *not* a bad thing, since the *retelling* is still necessary. And while our own life's journey must always be ended alone, the travel is undertaken in the company not only of immediate loved ones and primal passion, but of the heroes and heroines -- and myth-cycles -- that have preceded us. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Myth understandings
In various writing books, we can be told that there are really only nine plots in fiction or seven or three or some other number. For Joseph Campbell, when discussing myth (which is closely related to fiction), there is only one plot. This plot, which he never calls such, is the subject of his classic work, The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
1-0 out of 5 stars A dated classic, and here's why...
Both as a commentary on the stages of myth and as its own mono myth, there is no denying the genuine artistry that Joseph Campbell has brought to this effort. But the reason he has been awarded a mere star is the same reason that hopefully this review itself will be dated when you read it -- namely because evolutionary behavioral psychology has made huge strides since 1948.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible
I've been carrying around a tattered copy of this book since 1969 and it comes closest to what a Bible should be - a book that yields wisdom whatever page it opens to. It is most understandable if you have a project to do - writing your own novel, analyzing great literature, or working through your own dark journey. It's a book for serious thinkers who want to dig into the structure of the myths that all of humanity share. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute
In reading Bonhoeffer's book, The Cost of Discipleship, I was impressed at the sincerity and depth of feeling Bonhoeffer had toward the subject matter. Knowing of his deep sacrifice and his own belief in being a true disciple of Christ, this made the book even more telling. His explanation of the cost and of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount was an inspiration to me and my own ministry. By his own experiences, he has laid out a model for a Christian to follow in becoming more fulfilled and living for Christ as He wanted us to live. This isn't the first book by Dietrich Bonhoeffer I have read. I found his "Spiritual Care" to be the best I have read for aspiring ministers of the word. The Cost of Discipleship takes off from that and emphasizes what a Christian is and how you should live your life to fully emulate Christ and all that He stands for. While the first chapter is a little long, the rest of the book comes across with definite concepts and hard-hitting thought. Again, this is a must-read for pastors and other ministers of the Word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent History of 'God'
Karen Armstrong is certainly one of the finest writers on religious issues. While not herself a believer in 'God', she speaks from experience (she was a nun for several years in the Roman Catholic Church) and also great understanding and sympathy.
