Among his many gifts, Joseph Campbell's most impressive was the unique ability to take a contemporary situation, such as the murder and funeral of President John F. Kennedy, and help us understand its impact in the context of ancient mythology. Herein lies the power of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Book
Joseph Campbell knows his subject, mythology and religious stories, so well that you can tell it has become instinctual for him to tie all the world's imagery and symbology together in a way that connects human beings in a truly transcendent way. This book clarifies how similar we all really are, at the core of our beings, despite where we live and in what millenia we are living in. So full of rich, thought-provoking conversation, I would recommend this to everyone, from young to old. It is just an awesome book that makes you fall in love with humans and human nature -- bad and good alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Both Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyer create a must read from their historic interview. This book has become my blueprint.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that seems to make religious nuts bitter.
Well versed and thought out, this book stands out and has been used in many of todays religion studies.Though some of his points can be perceived as "stretched", he is still a scholar in his field. It seems that the people that often criticize him and his works have little to no experience or education on the subject at hand and do it solely on the fact that it sometimes criticizes the monotony of modern and ancient religion.I recommend this book to everyone. Read the book and make your own educated determination. It could open your eyes and your mind.Or you can close your mind, avoid the book, and start a "crusade" against the author for speaking his opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Key To Happiness!
Although this little book is titled "The Way To Love," it could also have been called "The Key To Happiness," because the real key to happiness is contained here. And what is that key?To let go of the idea that anything outside of yourself can make you happy. This book contains many inspiring messages. But above all, it focuses on the idea that happiness is your innate state, and you can choose to return to that state at any time. This little book inspires deep contemplation, and I recommend that you read it repeatedly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Feel Troubled By The 'Real' World? Take Heart...
If you feel troubled by the "real" world - take comfort. In his final meditations, Anthony De Mello reminds us that it is all an illusion.Whenever I feel like it's all too much for me I open up The Way To Love. In this beautiful, tiny volume you will find larger than life inspiration. This book can and will change your life.
5-0 out of 5 stars When the student is ready, the teacher appears
I have been searching for God for many years, and have had many "peaks and valley" experiences. I truly believe Jesus is the Messiah, but I need a teacher for my particular level. Anthony De Mello has really given me peace with this small but amazing book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value; Excellent Thinker; Excellent Life; Excellent Resource
I think that it would be foolish and way beyond the scope of any review to attempt to critique the entire thinking of a great writer and thinker like Francis Schaeffer in this review so I won't. What makes his legacy so great, in my mind at least, is that he lived what he taught; his philosophy was not an end in itself but was a guide for him to live by, for him to find God by. You probably are not contemplating buying The Complete Works being unfamiliar with his thinking whose affect is still felt in Christendom and beyond, so I will comment from here on out on the actual set itself. This set contains all 22 of his major books. In 5 volumes, the books are not overly large so as to be unwieldy to attempt to read. Nevertheless, to put 22 full-length books into 5, you can imagine that the typeface is smaller than I normally like and the books are larger than I normally like. But for the price of this set, if you are going to read any of Schaeffer's work, this is definitely a very good value.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wake Up Call for the 21st Centruy
Written in the 1980's, Schaeffer shows the direction that culture and religion were headed at that time. As I read through the pages in 2006 it's like viewing a roadmap for how the age in which we now live came to be. This series is a must for any Christian wanting tounderstand the world as it is now and his relation to it, as well as how Christians should respond to the modern world.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book; a must read!!
i thoroughly enjoyed this book!it's my first James Dobson (although I've heard his Focus on the Family broadcast quite a bit) and i thought it was excellent.as the mother of a two year old, i find myself concerned for is well-being and adjustment in a world that seems to have lost its belief in God.this book has provided me with new interpretations to raising boys that i don't get in many of my university psychology classes.as a psychology major, i found this book twice as gratifying due to its presentation of several researchventures.so not only does he have something to say, he has the facts to back it up.not to mention he's BRAVE enough to say it!!in the chapter on homosexuality, he presents a new concept to gay men that i had never heard in any of my psychology classes!no professors like to talk about it as an alternative to genetic make-up, even though there has been ZERO conclusions that homosexuality is genetic.it's interesting to hear a different perspective that makes just as much sense as the current, more popular one, that of genetics rather than environment.thank you, Dr. Dobson, for telling it how you see it, not just how people want to hear!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for parents with boys of any age!
This is an excellent book for parents who have boys...any age, 1 or more! I plan to read it every couple of years as my boys get into new "phases" of their lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Up Boys
This is an excellent book that parents will find essential in helping to rear boys in today's world. The scientific evidence presented that differentiates boys from girls helps substantiate why boys act differently than girls. It shows that this difference is a strength and should be encouraged and celebrated, not minimized.I highly recommend that it be made a part of your library. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars She Makes It Up As She Goes Along.....
I used to think the world of Sylvia Browne--until I started to read more widely about the paranormal. Now I can see how empty of content her books are. Whether its on paper or on television, Sylvia is obviously just spouting things off the top of her head--no validations or evidence needed.
4-0 out of 5 stars so far so good...
I didn't want to put the book down and i probably would have finished it but i had a newborn and a 3 year old wanting my attention.
5-0 out of 5 stars book was excellent
enjoyed it greatly. it works well as a reference book... or even as a book to flip to a random page and enjoy a new definition with Sylvia's twist put on it. referenced something she presented as a fact with another book of hers and found an inconsistancy... not sure if that was a mistake in editing or what but- this book was interesting if nothing else. if the fantastic interests you at all i think you'll find this book fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I will make this fast. This was my first Sylvia Browne Book and it had me hooked. I was excited every chance that i got to read it. It opened a few things up about dreams that i've had for years and some i've had as a child. She does not give you direct interpretation of every thing you dream but makes you find your own meaning after all we are all different. Boy some things that she stated hit me pretty hard, how i could have missed that myself. It really helped me see what my mind was telling me subconsciously in my dreams ~ and what i need to do to fix that. Now when people ask me what their dreams mean it's still hard to interpret them but it has become somewhat easier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well informed book
This is very informative.Makes you take a look at past dreams that you've had. Very intersting about how children dream. Good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars So many dreams so little time!
I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into my dreams because I have had the most vivid sometimes crazy dreams you could possibly imagine.I give this book 3 stars because I was starting to get bored reading it.There was some interesting stuff in the book like totems which are animals in dreams that we have "chosen" as "protectors" because animals are pure spirits and most sacred to God. I had never thought of them that way in dreams before and so this book did make me look at animals and a few other things differently in my dreams. But I started to become bored with all the account stories from other people about the content of their dreams. I found myself skimming alot when another dream was told here and there. I skipped to parts I was most interested in.Some one else might not become bored, as I did, reading other people's dream accounts in the book so that is why I did not give this book less than 3 stars.I did learn a few things and will look for other souces of information on those topics. So my search moves on. I hope this review helps. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money and go practice the Golden Rule
This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes.First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it.Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business.Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?
4-0 out of 5 stars Return to the Golden Rule
In a recent newspaper, in one day ...Enron chief pleads not guilty, Adelphia execs found guilty, no retrial in stock scandal ... and this was just the front page of the business section. On that same page, I noted the use of the phrase, "ethically amoral." Have we finally reached a point where we can construct such phrases? Corruption, moral relativism, the meaning of "is," have you had enough?

1-0 out of 5 stars he missed the point completely
the writer's attempt to deconstruct Paul only shows how much he does not understand Paul's epistles. It is a sad fact that those who cannot grasp something, simply because that understanding is not in them, try to make it into something else completely. Hoping, thus, to 'justify' themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST ANOTHER ONE ON PAUL
Bishop Wright has done it again. I have read several volumes on the apostle Paul, and I have to conclude that this one by NT Wright is among the top three.
3-0 out of 5 stars N.T. Wright...."Paul"
Going inside the mind of Paul. This is what N.T. Wright has attempted to do.He has attempted to "think Paul's thoughts after him.(inside cover)"He has done this by drawing on his knowledge and experience of Pauline literature as well as examining Paul in his Jewish Roots. His goal is to "constantly be stirred up to fresh glimpses of God's ways and purposes with the world and with us strange human creatures (inside cover)."Before I shall humbly attempt to interact with the argument of Wright's book, I want to make two preliminary observations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mitford Series
My wife tried for several years to get me to read this series. "Sissy Books", I'd cry. I bless the day when I finally succumbed to her charms and read the books by Jan Karon.I have read them once, retired, and started re-reading them again.I laughed, I shed a few tears (that's hard for a retired police officer to say)and I had some very important lessons in life re-emphasized. I saw in Father Tim a man after God's own heart, and it makes me want to be that kind of man. I highly recommend In This Mountain as well as the entire series.

Editorial Review

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Farce
When I ordered this book I was led to believe it was based on the science of mental health. What I found was that it was a book on Christian values, Bible verses, and virtual preaching. Instead of sound psychological protocol I was given Bible classes. I am not anti-Christian, or anti-religion, but I don't expect to buy a book on psychology only to find it is about two men's religious values. I returned this book.

Reviews (107)

3-0 out of 5 stars 12 step grace with a little incongruence thrown in.
I too had heard a lot about this book. I picked it up as an unabridged audio book and listen as I drive to work and back. Manning does a good job describing the grace of God. He uses carefully chosen scripture references which support his argument. Unfortunately he leaves out God's requirement to repent; "go and sin no more." He talks of the prodigal's unconditional acceptance by the father, but fails to point out that the prodigal had repented by coming to his senses and returning to the father. Manning leaves us just the way we are with no change wrought by the Holy Spirit. He leaves us with "sloppy agape." That is; no requirement for the Christian to seek to live a Holy or Sanctified life. I fully agree that good works don't save us, nor do they keep us saved. But they are evidence of our salvation and the change wrought by the Holy Spirit once we accept Christ as Lord and Savior. I know those are terms in disfavor these days, but the Gospels and the Epistles tell us that we ought to have some evidence of a change in our lives when Christ takes up residence. Manning would have us just accept that we are fatally flawed with no obligation of ever achieving a more sanctified life. This is where his twelve step foundation becomes evident. The gospel of Bill W. and the Gospel of Jesus Christ are a lot different. Christ empowers us to become a child of God and encourages us to live a sanctified life. Will we fail at times? Sure, and we have to rest in the Grace of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to live the sanctified life. Both are necessary. Manning rightfully takes the church to task for past failings in regard to racial prejudice and self righteousness, but curiously he doesn't extend the same grace to the Church as he expects from God. Ah, but we're all hypocrites at some point. I think this is a challenging book but Christians need to read it with their brains engaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grace is not just at mealtime
Brennan writes a very readable, thought-provoking case to the fact that grace is not just for Sunday or just a concept, it is a life-style.With many excellent quotes and a very breezy writing style, he reinforces the concept that grace is something that is a lifestyle, but too often, we it as an intellectual concept only.
2-0 out of 5 stars Half the Gospel
No question, God's grace is wonderful, all-encompassing, and hard to fathom - impossible to fathom in its entirety, in fact. The best we can do is understand "our daily bread" and know that His "grace is sufficient" for us. For that reason, I welcome any book that attempts to help us to understand His grace better. It is true, Manning does speak eloquently about God's love, a subject that can never be spoken too much or too eloquently about. It is for this that I gave the book two stars, and almost gave it three.

Lucado is one of my favs and this book is wonderful! It really lets you see that God is in control and He wants us to let Him carry our burdens. We were not made to carry them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful
I recently and unexpectently lost my mother. In the past 3 months, so many unexplained feelings have hit me like a brick. This book, especially chapter 11 (most recently) has been so meaningful to me and why I am having these feelings. It is a comfort to me to open the book and find some solace where I couln't find it before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
Mr. Lucado writes with great ease and brings home his points in clear and interesting ways. His analogies and personal stories make the messages quite meaningful. My book is filled with highlighting and I now am able to skim through it and continue to enjoy the inspiration that he provides.Cheryl Dickow, author, "Reclaiming Your Christian Self in a Secular World: A Woman's Worth." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A handbook for a practicing Christian
How do we know when God is calling us to do something, or if we are getting answers to prayers? Unless we hear God's voice out of a burning bush or a pillar of fire, we are all too susceptible to rationalizing something we really want to do or one of our heart's desires to be God's will. This workbook is the most practical offerings I have ever seen as to how to tell the different. The Bible tells us to "test the Spirit" of such a communication, and this book tells us how. Easy to recommend.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!!!!
If you seek to grow closer to God, this book helps you to start doing just that. This book has challenged me in many areas of my life.I'm only in Unit 3 and have already noticed a change in my life.I love the fact that the authors don't give you a methodical approach to experiencing God, but they stress that God always takes the initiative in our love relationship with Him.We just need to respond to His invitation.I would recommend this book to everyone!

1-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A BUNCH OF DRIBBLE!!!!
This is just another "I know what God is thinking" book.Doing the will of God???? Oh please...Henry T. Blackaby only focused on the things that are useful and sensible.God commanded lots of things most of which are vile, repugnant, or just plain idiotic. Is it any wonder Mr. Blackaby did not dwell on:
