5-0 out of 5 stars A Short Life of the Father of Monasticism
St. Anthony of the Desert was a hermit in the 3rd century who became the Father of Monasticism. This book is written by St. Athanasius, another great saint, who is also a Doctor of the Church. It describes St. Anthony's life, his miracles and revelations. There are many interesting stories and incidents from his life included. The book is divided into four sections:how he trained himself, his teachings, his work for others, and his last years.A short, but very worthwhile, biography of a great saint. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, So-so Translation
As has been said, this book is fantastic. Everything good that you learn about God's becoming a man originates in this book. Would be nice if the translation was a little more fluid. Unfortunately, this is probably the best translation you'll find, for now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading for Every Christian
This classic work from early Church Father, St. Athanasius, should be mandatory reading for every Christian (Protestant and Catholic alike). Were it not for God's working through this great Church Father, a heretical view called 'Arianism' would have dominated the Church. The Arians believed that Jesus was merely human and created like any other human. Jesus had a beginning, and was not of the same essence or substance as the Father.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gift, Embodied
It is a shame that more people haven't read this book; after the New Testament, Athanasius' De Incarnatione Verbi Dei (On the Incarnation of the Word) is the most important synthesis of Christian thought up through the 4th century and has remained one of the most foundational of all Christian texts ever written. All later Christian thought on the sacraments and artwork (particularly icons) would eventually be an extension of the Christian teaching on the Incarnation; this work, then, not only shapes the basis of later Christian thought, but also determines its trajectory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent study Bible - presenting the Orthodox viewpoint
I am very dissapointed with Amazon for not providing any description for this study Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Bible
The Orthodox Study Bible (OSB) is an excellent study bible. I do not think it deserves some of the harsher criticism in some other reviews. There are several admirable features to this bible:
2-0 out of 5 stars Orthodox Study Bible-Less than expected
This study bible , on the cover states, 'discovering orthodox christianity in the pages of the New Testament'.The articles and aids to understanding the church and to studying the Bible were very helpful. But these were basic. They provide a good introduction. But much of what is in the articles could also be gotten from 'free' literature from the church.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monastic Saints
This book is a translation of the biographies of six early monastic saints of Christianity. The particular lives - Antony, Paul of Thebes, Hilarion, Malchus, Martin of Tours and Benedict - are chosen as representatives of particular monastic styles from the early hermits to the monastic community, as generally envisioned today. The choice is also driven by the fact that the lives were written in Latin, which is the interest of Latin scholar and translator, Carolinne White.

4-0 out of 5 stars Restores a lost doctrine!
"For He was made man that we might be made God."3-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Wonderful, but It's Packaging isn't
The historical worth of this work goes without saying, but this edition has been poorly published as a pamphlet with only stapled binding. This work deserves more--at least an intelligent, scholarly introduction should accompany it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeds the mind and the soul
St. Athanasius brilliantly defines the exact effects of the incarnation of the Word as Christ. His work satisfies the needs of those who are intellectual and desire theology, but also provides down-to-earth inspiration for those to whom complex theology does not appeal. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oddly centered account.
The Carpatho-Russians were Orthodox from their conversion to Christianity as a result of the missionary efforts of the Eastern Roman missionary brothers Sts. Cyril and Methodius c. A.D. 800 until the creation of the Eastern European Unia in the Early Modern period through the military aggression of Poland-Lithuania (at the beck and call of the Roman Papacy). However, there now are a considerable number of them who have made their way back to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church -- the Orthodox Church. For one who wants the perspective of the Uniates, this book is a good one; for people who want the story of the miraculous return of some Carpatho-Russians to Holy Orthodoxy, try _Good Victory - Metropolitan Orestes Chornock & the American Carpatho - Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Diocese_ (1985) by Lawrence Barriger. This volume, on the other hand, is written by an apologist for the Unia -- the Eastern European version of the Spaniards' mistreatment of the natives of Latin America.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Shadow People
Fr. Pekar gives a stunning and vibrant view of aturbulent history of a people who have been up till now relegated to the shadows of both European and Catholic history. He tracesthe story of the Carpatho-Rus as both anhistorian and as a theologian, carefully sorting and placing together thoseforces that helped to shape their identity as well as their survivalagainst numerous odds.I highly recommend this book for those who wish toknow the struggles of these people as well as for those who seek tounderstand the true universality of the Catholic Church. ...
