1-0 out of 5 stars Not what is depicted with the cover view
In searching for this title I found there were 60+ versions out there so I had to rely on both editor and cover pictorials to determine the one I was seeking (which was modern English, full page pictorials, and covering both Christian's and Christiana's journeys).Since I had the one I wanted in hand, I put a lot of faith in the cover visual. What I got was as version without full page pictures, small print and in the older dialect. From what other pilgrims have told me, the modern English version is essential in understanding this work. I donated it to the local library in hopes it will still do good.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are born brainwashed
Anyone who is a serious follower of Jesus Christ and understands what he is saved from (the wrath of God) will find this book to be an immense treasure house of comfort and fatherly instruction. Those who think that this book is a tool for brain washing have it all backwards. The brainwashing occurs when we are conceived into this world in our sin and rebellion against our Holy Creator, by our very nature. Born into a vacuum, we'd all rebel. The gospel is the news that Jesus Christ endured God's wrath in our place and is ever making us more like himself. We are no longer in the bondage that we were born into. Praise be to God!This book is a wonderfully wise parable of a Christian's experience in this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian's Journey
Christian leaves behind his sinful life in search of the Celestial City, little knowing of the dangers and trials, as well as the joys, which will meet him on the way. John Bunyan revealsuncanny insight of human nature, and a keen perception of the spiritual realm, in this facinating allegory told with pathos and poignancy, as well as humor. Journey with Christian as he battles against the forces of darkness, persecuters in Vainity Fair, smooth talking compromisers, the Giant Despair and his evil wife, Diffidence, and, ultimately, as he reaches his destination in the beautiful city where sorrow is unknown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service
I read Pilgrim's Progress when I first got saved in 1978. It is a very good description of a Christian's walk through life. When I felt I wanted to refresh my memory of the story I looked to Amazon for a copy. It is reasonablly priced and I received my copy in very good time. ... Read more

This is a great book.It has helped many Christians throughout history in their Christian walk.I would highly recommend getting this nice edition.Give it to your son for his birthday gift.Give it to your daugther before she goes into the lion's den of college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christian Book
The book is told from the third person perspective in the context of a dream. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the narrator follows a character named Christian from the time he leaves the City of Destruction and his family, accepting the path Chirst lays out for him, and watches Christian progress through his earthly journey until he reaches Heaven. Many of the elements encountered in the Christian faith are personified as characters that Christian encounters. The second half of the book tells the account of Christian's wife's and children's journey toward Heaven. The margins of the book are filled with scripture references that go along with the story. A good background in protestant theology makes the book much more enjoyable. I found The Pilgram's Progress to be very insightful. ... Read more

A very good and readable edition of Bunyons classic. This is a book that all of 21st century Christianity should read. After scripture it is the best help for the Christian walk. We should definitely read this book before we pick up a copy of the latest self help book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Starting Point For New Readers
For those who have longed to read Pilgrim's Progress but have put it off this is the version to start with. Many have wanted to read this Christian Classic but did not want to start with trying to understand the 17th Century English of the original. To those this book is a blessing. It is very easy to read but amazingly true to the original. It is great as a stand alone reading, but even better when used as a prelude to the original text.Read more

I really enjoyed this book. The illustrations are very good and go well with the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bestseller since 1678!
I hadn't read this book in a long time, and when I first started it I thought, "Gee, I'm going to have to like it-how can I publish a negative review of the best selling books in history?"Fortunately, my fears were indeed unfounded.Pilgrim's Progress, despite its age, remains a book that makes you think, makes you laugh, makes you love God more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on: A Reliable Edition, Improved
John Bunyan was an astonishing man, a working-class genius who, while producing the last great medieval-style allegories in English, helped invent the English novel, apparently without intending either. The bulk of his writings fell into the obscurity of most seventeenth century theological tractates, but a few have remained current, and "The Pilgrim's Progress" (1678) has been of outstanding importance, for a variety of reasons. It was an immediate popular success, even appearing in French and Dutch editions within a few years, and being reprinted in Puritan Boston, where Bunyan's Baptist teachings would have been unwelcome. The second (1678) and third (1679) printings contained expansions. A fraudulent "Second Part" helped motivate Bunyan to produce his own sequel (1684), published with the First Part ever since.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Enduring Christian Classic
John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress originally published in 1678 is an enduring classic in Christian inspirational writing. In the present edition Markham and Wiersbe have sought to make this text more accessible to the modern reader by minor updates to the language and structure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bunyan's Masterpiece in Respectfully Modern English
Wiersebe has done a great job revising the English to make Pilgrim's Progress understandable to the modern American. His revisions are done sparingly, preserving the style of the original.
4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for our times
Having read the original many years ago, I find this version refreshing and necessary to our times.Sadly, some of our commentaries thrashing the book for paraphrasing showsan "artsy" snobery when what we should be doing is hailing the author for being inciteful enough to realize that the message is what is most important and it will not reach it's intended audience if they cannot understand the language.Let's face it, the USA sits at the bottom of the educational food chain; perhaps this version of the book will reach and thus help bring to Christ some of our less educated brothers and sisters. Isn't that what is most important? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Godsend
As someone who struggles with obsessive-compulsive thoughts and fears about my standing with the Lord it has been a tremendous blessing to read the spiritual autobiography of this great saint. Bunyan spent years in fear for his soul having thought he had committed an unforgiveable sin. But in the end he came through it and wrote "The Pilgrim's Progress" to encourage others. He died a courageous and much loved minister.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic
The principles of overcoming the flesh endure from one generation to another as the message of victory in Jesus Christ continues. John Bunyan writes about the form it took in his generation. This classic in Christian and English literature describes the journey Christian takes to the celestial city--that permanent home of believers in Jesus.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still a Classic After All These Years
Well worth the short time it takes to read it. Had heard of this book all my life, but had never read it. Now I know what I was missing. Not that there is anything new here in terms of faith or theology--there's not.But the manner in which this story is told is entertaining and captivating, still, after all these years. Truths we have been taught and learned through our life's experience are here, all told in a most entertaining and enlightening way.It makes one smile, laugh and, at times, touches one's heart. If it is your first time to read it or your first time in a long time, it's well worth the read. Well worth it. We're all pilgrims and we are all traveling through a foreign land...

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilgrims Progress--A Blessing
This audio book has been a joy. It happens to be one of my faviorte things to listen to. All my friends at college know lines from it because I talk about it constantly. The story begins with Christian going on pilgrimage in search of heaven. I would encourage all to get this book. The narrator Edward de Souza is wonderful. The applications John Bunyan makes with the Christian life are so practical and real. As a young person its principles have encouraged me as I go about life's journey. I'm reminded of all those who went on pilgrimage, and the reason they continued or left the way. We will find the waters of life deeper or shallower according to our faith in the King of the Place (Heaven). Buy the book. I don't think you will be disappointed. If you don't like it, let me know I will take it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
I read this book for a class but I am glad to have read. This book is a great historical read. I found that it helped renew my defences as a christian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Allegorical Fiction
This is a masterpiece. Believe it or not, in some ways I found it more invigorating than Pilgrim's Progress. Mainly because the conclusion and progression of the tale were slightly less obvious.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Reverse Pilgrim's Progress - Burning Issues
Mr. Badman is just plain BAD.Little sins in little children get magnified into bigger and worse sins.Mr. Badman truly has every bad trait anyone could ever have.He started with lying and stealing, graduated into drinking, cheating and adultery, and then becomes a first-class hypocrite to snag himself a wealthy Christian woman for marriage. While he was sick, he cried out in false repentance only to regress as soon as he was getting well. The saddest and most touching part of the book is the death of his Christian wife and her exhortations to him and their unsaved children. From then on, it's all downhill, as Mr. Badman's seared conscience admits no light, and God gives him up to his destruction. This book has everything NOT to do if you don't want to end up like Mr. Badman. It is also very relevant with the issues of today, drunk "driving", planned "parenthood", and bankruptcy and fraud.Hot summertime reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not by John Bunyan
This work was written by George Larkin and published in 1711 with the title "The World to Come; The Glories of Heaven and the Terrors of Hell." It was laterpublished as "The Visions of John Bunyan" and in the 19th century included in some collected works of Bunyan under the title of "The World to Come; The Glories of Heaven and the Terrors of Hell."However, it has long been known to have been written by Larkin more than 20 years after Bunyan died.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye opening and thought provoking!
This book was recommended to me by a friend and he made it sound like a must read piece of work. Well, it was all that he said and more! Visions of Heaven and Hell causes those who believe in life after death to think aboutthe consequences we will endure for our actions and reactions to theexperiences we have in our present lives and also how small we really arein realation to the universe around us. I would recommend this book toanyone who thinks that their life is perfect and totally fulfilled, havingany and every materialist thing they ever desired. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pilgrims Progress Devotional
A great personal study of an all time favourite! This devotional really helps the reader to understand the symbolism of this classic story - and how it relates to Salvation and the Christian Life. Each daily devotional has a portion of the Pilgrims Progress with a comment about this section. There are also a few Bible passages to reinforce the "lesson" for the day followed by a prayer which carefully summarizes the personal application of the passage. A great way to read the "story" and then apply it to our daily lives! The language used in the comments is "adult" in style ... but still easy to read. My teenagers are enjoying this insightful devotional. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, thoughtful, rich book
The Pilgrim's Progress is a wonderful Christian classic that the author John Bunyan wrote while in jail for his Christian faith. It is a wonderfully rich book which charts the ups and downs of the Christian faith, as the character Christian finds his way to the Gate where he will find relief for the burden on his back. Amid the fiery trials that comes his way, he meets people like Evangelist and Help who offer him sound advice, while others like Worldly Wise attempt to lead him off the narrow and straight path. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Family Devotional Guide!
Though it's a bother converting the julian date, and the quotes from Pilgrim's Progress seem a little small in comparison to the commentary, this book makes for great devotional reading with my 10 year old boy. He enjoys looking up the two or three scripture references at the bottom and the prayer after that is always appropriate to the story above. Each day brings a new lesson in the Christian graces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You've heard of it... now is a great time to read it!
Everyone should read Pilgrim's Progress. I read it for the first time last week. It is a book about a journey by the main character, Christian. It will also set you on your own journey through the Bible. John Bunyan writes that his allegory contains "nothing but sound and honest Gospel strains" and he includes references to Bible verses on nearly every page. I found it easy to understand Christian's journey by looking up these verses in my Bible as I came to them. By doing this, Bunyan was giving me fresh guidance because I had not read many of these verses recently. The references also allow me to keep Bunyan accountable for his words by comparing them to Scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's hope for you too in God's Abounding Grace
A lot of us are familiar with John Bunyan as the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, whose influence in Christendom is second to the Bible. Bunyan was a preacher, a prolific writer and a shining saint for God. However when we read this book we find out that he was an atheist and infidel in his youth, enjoying sin and rebellious towards God. Inwardly he suffered from tormented nightmares of demons and judgment, but outwardly he went on pretty much as any other sinner, taking delight in sin and being the ringleader of mischief. Several times he nearly lost his life, and even though there were several close calls, still he did not turn to God. After his marriage, he participated in religious activities, went through the motions of attending church and generally lived as he pleased, each time successfully shrugging off pangs of guilt. One day, after church, while playing a sport, a voice seemed to call out to him from heaven to his soul, which said, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" Bunyan was convinced it was the Lord Jesus looking down on him in displeasure. What follows details his sinking into despair, his desparate attempts at working his way into God's good graces, and his struggles with temptation and doubt. In a strange sort of way, it is comforting to read about Bunyan's struggles and identify with them because you can see how he turned out so greatly used by God. He rationalized, made excuses and tried every way to justify himself. Bunyan did not try to gloss over his motivations but gave an honest account of his struggles from avowed sinner, to religious hypocrite before he was finally converted. He describes in great detail his doubts and despair, his yearning to be converted to Jesus Christ, and then being assured of his salvation by reading the Bible and praying. Reading this book will help you realize how God's grace can abound and save even the most wretched of sinners and gives us abounding hope.

I can't say that I have read this book...yet, but what I can say is that anyone who endeavours to read any work of Dr. Haykin is in for a real treat. He was my prof. for Church History, and a man whom I am thoroughly impressed with.He is a humble, diplomatic, professional person with a strong heart for God and His glory.5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT
The Pilgrim's Progress is the 2nd most famous book in the world. John Bunyan is a genious and the arguments in the book are very convincing and hard to deny. Anyone who believes in "free will" would be turned around if they read this book. It clearly explains that we do not choose God, He chooses us, or rather, he CHOSE us before the foundations of the world. Everything in his book is scriptual and I love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand why the greatest power in the universe loves you.
John Bunyan's book, 'The Fear of God' is an excellent study of the holiness of God and why man, even saved men, should fear him. The author, grounded in biblical truths, illustrates to the reader just how holy, powerful and awesome God is. He also shows us just how insignificant we arein comparison to God.Then, after the author has striped us of all ourfalse pride he shows us how God sees us. From here he once again lays outthe plan of salvation and why God has chosen this manner of redemption forhumanity. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A profoundly powerful parable of the many hardships
Pilgrim's Progress is a picturebook retelling of John Bunyan's classic narrative, intended for younger readers yet powerful for all ages. John Bunyan was a Baptist pastor who started to write the original tale when he was jailed in Bedford, England for preaching. Since then his story has become a widely beloved, metaphorical saga of a pilgrim named Christian in search of the Celestial City. Many monsters seek to lead him astray or devour him along his quest - the wicked Judge Hate-good, the giants of Doubting Castle, the diguesed and deceptive Flatterer, and even the Athiest strives to convince him that the Celestial City does not exist. Yet Christian also makes steadfast friends, such as Faithful, who speaks out against unjust laws at the cost of his life, and Hopeful, who keeps Christian's head above the darkest waters. Colorful, slightly cartoony illustrations decorate a story that despite its elements of whimsy, is at its heart a profoundly powerful parable of the many hardships encountered on the road the faithful walk. Highly recommended.
