5-0 out of 5 stars You will move forward with this book
I read this book 5 years ago and made some vital steps forward that CHANGED my life. I still write the morning pages from time to time. It is a great book for right-brained people.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good but I liked The Artist's Way at Work Better
Many good ideas in this book - especially the "morning pages" but I personally found The Artist's Way at Work to be more helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars simplicity in form
For everyone who thinks they have creative ability. This is simply the book to read. This book is slowly but surely transforming and discipling me to become better at writing.I only hope that a year from now I have made a decent and forthright attempt in using these skills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Working the Muse to Creative Delight
A brand new creative tool for the artistic life. New tools and guidance from artist's way creator Julia Cameron. Excellent for the journey along with Morning Pages, Artist Dates, and all the other goodies that Cameron has shared to artists around the world since 1992. Give the gift of the creative heart to yourself... you will be surprised in your dreams! I had heard of the Artist's Way in college and read a copy from time to time but when I really applied the practice in 2004 ... Cameron's informal mentoring did the trick to unblock my creative expression. My artistic dreams were focused on literary pursuits but a sudden interest in singing caught a life of its own when I joined a formal Artist's Way group composed of 7 people. Before I knew it the practice lead to a solo performance at a cancer benefit gala show where I sung "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack and was told I sounded alot like her. Nonetheless, if Cameron herself had told me in 2003 that I would be a singer (I've since joined a choir that does fundraisers around the city) ... even I would have laughed! The point is ... if you want your heart to lead the way ... allow the artist to thrive and express itself without intellectual editing ... and see your creative experiences soar! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best emotional and spiritual support for artists
I read this book so long ago but still reference it often. This book explains how to live with many universal feelings and experiences of being a writer/artist. Cameron's writing has helped me make crucial decisions, bolstered me when motivation waned, taught me that insecurity comes with the territory, shown me to contain my work until it's ready to withstand critiques, when group support is not supportive, and how to set boundaries to improve productivity. I'm grateful to Cameron's generosity in teaching many things I didn't have to stumble over myself until I figured them out.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Step
I read and completed the exercises in THE ARTIST WAY about ten years ago--and it changed my life. I'm an admitted self-help junkie, but Julia Cameron goes way, way beyond the typical self-help hype. Her words resonate like a tuning fork against my sternum.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED
Get this book if you are STUCK. Or even if you just need something new to inspire you in the wee hours... For me, it was like a tonic after a long period of not feeling very creative. After reading only the first few chapters, I realized that I WAS feeling creative, but I had definitely stifled my impulses. I read The Artist's Way years ago and loved it, but "poo-poohed" the morning pages (oh no! more work! who needs that! yuk...). Then, after reading the first chapter of Cameron's sequel,I got up one morning and sat, practically pouting in my pajamas with pen in hand. "Ha!" I thought, "I still won't have anything to say!" And then the stuff started pouring out in my scrawls. Then, toward the end of my three pages, I was using ALL CAPS to express repressed wishes and hopes. That same day I began to take action out of the energy and innate confidence, and believe it or not, things began to "happen." I continue to find the book very motivating in this very way...it makes me want to get on with things and stop hesitating. There is a bit of magic in doing what she proposes that is something that you won't be able to explain. And, this book is not only for artists--it is for anyone who wants to move forward. She emphasizes what we all know but may have forgotten...that the big begins with the small. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal
You can get a notebook of your own to do your journalling, but definitely as a companion to the Artist's Way, the Artist' Way Morning Pages Journal is the way to go. It will lay down a solid foundation for you to journal consistently...daily...and if the foundation is solid...then every time you journal going forward will be that much better. Julia Cameron knows her stuff and she didn't create this journal for nothing...so when you get the Artist's Way Book...don't forget to get this book too so you will have a win-win situation all-around. Good Luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a buyer only knows
I hated it. I know people who loved it though. I live a life where I wake up and exercise. I don't have 2 hours to wake right up and sit down and write. That would be hard with my being a mom of 3. I would have loved it if the author could understand the plight of the night owl. In the book she hammers it in though that you won't be doing the book right if you can't commit to the morning hours. I found myself putting it in the garage to get it out of my way because I never had the time to get into it and couldn't get into it. I bought the book and cassettes too... if you are not a morning person ... maybe just check out the regular book from the library and see how you feel. I really do firmly stand on some love some hate it's a book that only you will be able to know for sure if you would like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once you fill this journal - there is your book!
This is a beautiful journal for those who are studying the 12-week Artist's Way program by Julia Cameron. Morning pages are a must for those reclaiming their artistic expression. The design of the journal (8 x 11 paper) combined with quotes from the book prompt your morning mind to release what's there. A minimum of three pages a day yeilds a short novel in one month. For those who choose to also do evening pages ... a 30 day write yields quite a thick book. Excellent tool to use in breaking down a literary project and busting writer's block.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words of Comfort
I found this small book very powerful and helpful. There were quotes and small essays for all types of transitions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful thoughts and words when I needed comfort.
I had bought this book early in the year (2005) but had somehow put it aside and forgotten about it. Three weeks after the death of my husband in December, the book "appeared" to me again and it was such a comfort to me. I am now reading it for the third time. It has been one of my best tools for dealing with my grief. Thank you Julia for such beautiful thoughts. Thank you God, for such a talented writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Declarations for a Changing World
There are some books that are so good, you almost want to keep their existence a secret-somewhat like finding a hidden treasure in a field, a needle in a haystack or a pearl of great price at a rummage sale.Julia Cameron's Transitions strikes me as one of those books.

Writing, for Julia Cameron, is neither solely vocation nor avocation: it is a way of life. It comes first thing in the morning, while the horses are waiting to be fed; it happens at the kitchen counter, while the onions are sautéing; it takes place on "dates" at café tables shared with likeminded friends; it unfurls in the mind as the '65 pickup "bucks over the rutted dirt roads like a stiff-legged bronco." 1-0 out of 5 stars Airy-fairy stuff
I believe that life is too short and books that really deserve to be read too plentiful (not to mention movies worth watching, games worth playing, ...) for anyone to spend more than five minutes on this book. It's amazing how marketing can help sell such fluffy material. Any time, I recommend "If You Want to Write" by Brenda Ueland instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercises should be an aid, not a crutch
I am not normally a fan of writer's inspiration books like this one, primarily because they are so addicting. A blocked or fearful writer can quickly fill their shelves up with books that explain and examine their literary malaise. On one hand, it can be a huge relief to have your problem recognized in print and read case histories about other writers who eventually made it through. But on the other, you run the risk of drowning in self-exploration and doing nothing practical to get yourself writing again.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rx For Writers
"The Right To Write" by Julia Cameron, took me a while to get through it. Not because it was boring or a slow read, but it is not the type of book you might want to read straight through. It is a book, any writer should pick up and read whenever a little motivation or inspiration is in order. Julia Cameron seems to find just the right words to get you going in the right, or should I say 'write' direction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vein of Gold- a winner!
Vein of Gold has met my expectations and beyond. As someone who has never felt "creative" it has helped me to broaden my defintion of what that means. It has practical exercises that are reasonable and useful as I continue my self-discovery of what being creative means. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creativity as birthright
Cameron is an inspiring teacher - pushing the revolutionary idea that everyone should live a creative life. Her ideas are closely connected to spirituality, and although she is Christian (and absolutely does NOT hide that fact), she encourages each reader to think about spirituality in their own individual way.I am very sensitive to any kind of hidden Christian propaganda in anything, but I assure you that this is not at all what her writing is about. She is simply asking you as a creative being to trust in a creative force that will help you if you are open enough to listen to it.Julia pokes fun at snobby writers who think she's doing a disservice to the artform by incouraging all of these 'novices' to write. If you agree with them, I wouldn't bother with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cameron Has Done It Again!
Julia Cameron has done it again.I read her first book The Artist's Way and this book is just as great.I've experienced an increase in creativity that I never thought possible. It truly is a journey inward.I'm 35 yrs. old and a mother of two.I had no idea that there was still so much to discover about myself. As mentioned in the book, a great symptom of increased creativity, is greater spirituality. Cameron harnesses the power of the words to create a creative reality. Simple deep declarations to stand up for who you really are.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
A bit too heavy on the "God" reference for me - I find my spirituality in nature and our mother earth. The passages are not poetic at all - they're declarations like the subtitle states - e.g. I will do X, I will do Y.The short quotes and titles to the passages are more inspiring & thought provoking than the passages themselves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Daily doses to nourish and replenish your inner artist
Meditations are wonderful pathways to bypass the doubts that lie in our cyncial intellectual minds. Serious students of The Artist's Way who desire a deeper practice to harness their creative fuel will love this. Cameron brings jewels to call forth the inner voice into the outer world. Her works are a sacred and rare tool for artistic practices and courageous creative lives. One of the real pearls from Cameron's work is the focus on the value of art, apart from the commerical market forces that has Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton on The New York Times bestselling list.

1-0 out of 5 stars pulease
I have never written a review here before but I just had to say something here to offset the groupie like mentality that i see littered amongst these reviews.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
This book is tedious. The Artist's Way is a great book, but this one suffers from too much information, a lot of self-absorption and ego, and too little self-reflection or understanding. She is probably too famous and too beloved by others to be able to think clearly about herself or her situation. The story presented here is at times truly bizarre, though often boring. While it had some interesting thoughts and life lessons about sobriety, mostly what I will remember from the book is that it is a story of someone who is never happy where she is living and keeps "taking a geographic" as they call it.The world seems to disappoint her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Offbeat and eccentric, but it makes for great reading
Unlike most reviewers here, let my state upfront that I was not familiar whatsoever with Julia Cameron. I saw this book and read the inside flap summary: "wrote for Rolling Stone, "was married to Martin Scorsese", hmmm, this could be interesting I thought, and off I went with the book. What a surprise that was awaiting me.

Reading the book for a masters level creativity class so I started out a skeptic. While much of the reading in the class has turned out to be very interesting, this book just hasn't struck any chords for me.
4-0 out of 5 stars working artist
This is the second Julia Cameron book I have read. It is very much like Artist's Way except it is for the artist in the work place. All of Cameron's books talk about the artist within but it is for those who are looking for self. Self is what you are going to find. It is getting rid of what is unimportant and focusing in on the important making a complete and happier person. I am not quite done with this book but have devoured it and shared it as I did with her first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artists can be thriving (not starving) artists
After completing the self-study program with Julia Cameron's Artist's Way ... this work-oriented book helps artistic and creative souls find a way to breath life and express their creative fire on the job. Cameron's analogy of the dragon is a dep metaphor to the fears that stop us from being our true selves. Instead of bottling up all the intense energy ... Riding The Dragon ... draws out our intensity with constructive excercies, wisdom, and a proper channel to achieve positive results. Cameron is one of the best informal writing guides for all of us with a voice were excavating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift
This book is simple, yet meaningful and worthy of contemplation or meditation.I have given this book as a gift to about 20 people and every person has called me to tell me how much they love the book and the thoughtfulness to give something that is a little different than flowers or chocolate to someone going through another phase in their life.
5-0 out of 5 stars An extrordinary book, and from a skeptical one at that...
This is an incredible book.I don't buy the whole "religion" thing myself, but do try to connect with something bigger on a semi-frequent basis. There's no mention of any particular denomination, faith, or creed, just God, or Higher Power, or Great Spirit, talking in ways you wish would explain stuff. It's very loving, and understanding, and patient, and comforting. I'm still wary of anything smacking of dogma or moralism, but this was anything but.Perfect for stuck people, depressed people, and people who claim not to need the big "G", but still want some reassurance alone at night. Some of the "shepherd" refrences could have been dropped, though.

Enter Supplies from Cameron. A concoction of advice, strategies, and common toolkits to keep our artistic souls pure and our muse shielded from the various Crazymakers out there. Must have!

Julia Cameron's books are the only companions that keep me from feeling stuck and isolated in a writer's life. "The Artist's Way" and "The Sound of Paper" are fixtures on my bedside table because she's truthful, sensible, and uplifting. ...And that's why I'm disappointed in this book. It falls very short of the mark.

5-0 out of 5 stars A record of how we honor ourselves
In our heady western culture it seems as if people put more energy and time into dating someone else instead of themselves. Julia Cameron's Artist Date book is a journal, memoir, and daily diary that acts as a testament of our self-love. Playful in its design and simple in its guidance. By taking ourselves out on Artist's date we open ourselves, and most critically - our hearts, to receive our natural artistic, soulful, and creative inheritance from the world. The best fiction tales are conceived on a date with oneself because the essence of our true voices are nourished.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I really like "The Artists Way" program, and struggle to incorporate it into my life.I thought this would be a daily calendar of suggestions and inspiration for incorporating the artist way philosophy into my daily life.Instead it focuses on the concept of the "Artist Date" in a cartoonish trivial way.I realize now that I should have been prepared for it not to be a calendar, but I found it very disappointing and not up to the quality I expected from having read the original book.I will try to return it to Amazon, something I rarely (if ever) do.

1-0 out of 5 stars amusing but unnecessary
the content of this book was very different than what i expected.i was expecting a book full of ideas for the WEEKLY "artist's date," but what i got was a DAILY cartoon book, offering SOME artist's date ideas, but mostly just cute (albeit inspiring) cartoons that don't pertain to the concept of the artist's date.the fact that it was a "daily" book, instead of weekly, is inconsistent with the author's suggestion for the artist's date.upon first glance, i found it both confusing and disappointing.not worth the price. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better off giving this as a gift with the book
I was fortunate to get a copy of this kit on sale for $5 at a metaphysical bookstore brand new. The Artist's Way Creativity Kit is very beautiful, complete with a small journal, incense, a circular cards with ideas on what to do for an artist date. That's pretty much the contents. It's simple and a great gift with the book. There really isn't a tool in the kit to help with promoting more creative output.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This piece is very unlike Julia Cameron's other creations. The kit doesn't seem to have much substance - a far cry from the Artist's Way. I was very disappointed by this kit, and I would not recommend it to anyone who has already been through The Artist's Way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
I'm a huge sucker for just about anything Julia Cameron does--I have "The Artist's Way," two of her books of prayers & declarations (& a third on the way), two tapes, "The Vein ofGold," etc., etc. & I love these tools. I eagerly snapped up thisbox but was very disappointed. The little journal could be soldseparately--it's a nice volume & a neat idea. The other contents reallyaren't worth the money & just under half the box is air (there's acardboard insert to fill up the space). I suspect this was someone'smarketing idea & not something that should've been approved, becauseit's not up to the quality of all that Cameron has done (& her otherstuff is very, very good). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and simple reasons why we sometimes don't create
This is a book of cartoons with captions that are the myriad excuses for why we
5-0 out of 5 stars What NOT To Do!
As a published writer/poet, I find that sometimes I get bogged down with the mundane: paying bills, worrying about my job, in short: procrastination. When I finally turned on my computer to work on my manuscript, I found my mind wandering in all directions except on my story. So, I turned it off and did something else.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
By the title, I was thinking this would be a humorous book about how things happen to interfere with what you want to do most as an artist, or at least how things come up when you are supposed to be working on projects. Instead, I did not find it humorous at all, it has more of a negative/cynical sense of humor. The majority of the cartoons were what excuses you can use to not create art. I'm sure someone who appreciates sarcastic or cynical humor would like it, but it wasn't for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirationally Written
I found this to be a very clear prescription for maintaining connection to your creative side. I did not expect the book to be this good, but the writing is great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creation is a practice not a product
Bravo to Julia Cameron! This next 12-week creative recovery program is a must have for those of us whose suppressed creative energy is yearning for release ... gradually. Walk towards a confident re-claiming of your creative freedom and power. A definite required text for every artist.

3-0 out of 5 stars This didn't work for me
I could not get inspired by this book.I consider myself a fairly creative person, but this was just a bit too spiritual for me.I thought her anecdotes were average, and I thought the exercies were trite. If you are seriously one dimensional, I think this book might help, but if you are accustomed to keeping a journal, belong to a writing group, visit museums on your own, you will be way past this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A less-biased review
I'm more of a moderate fan than other reviewers here. As one reviewer points out, much of it is already in "The Artist's Way," though I liked how she described the basic tools (morning pages, artist's date, walks) much more concisely.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scratching below the surface of the writing life
Cameron is one of the most intimate informal writing mentors for people at any stage of artistic recovery and reclaiming. The Sound of Paper brings the journey to a level of essence - if your essence is to write then Cameron shares her experiences of the highs and lows. An addition to any tool kit in the creativity box of artistic living. Another great find is The Artist's Way Kit... jammed with ideas of how to date yourself, conceive, and give birth to your stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank the Great Creator for Julia
This book came at a great time for me, hitting me where I live and reminding me why I so appreciate (and am grateful to) Julia Cameron. The short essays in this book make for easy inspirational reading whenever you need it -- you can pick it up and start almost anywhere, which is handy. But don't let the short length of the essays diminish the great things this book as a whole is capable of conveying to writers who are suffering creative blocks. There's also a great deal of wisdom here for professional writers who are feeling uprooted and/or unappreciated after months of bleeding on their pages. A must for writers who've been on the path a while and are thirsty for companionship and understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Other Group
I make a point of telling anyone searching for their inner voice or a sense of self about Julia Cameron. Her work, The Artist's Way changed my life.I was diligent and worked through Ms. Cameron's twelve week program several times over from beginning to end.The book, the exercises, and Ms. Cameron's method worked for me.
1-0 out of 5 stars How to be completely self-absorbed
This book is like every book by Julia Cameron. In it, she once again ponders her life as a writer. She once again pats herself on the back for all of her wondrous accomplishments. She once again looks in the mirror and assures us that she is still a beautiful woman. She yet again comes across as terribly lonely and makes writing look like a pathetic way to spend one's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I read this book one chapter a day to get me focused on my own writing and reading for my dissertation. This book brings my soul to where I am. Without this book, I don't know how to get rid of my other worries in life and concentrate on my study. So I strongly recommend this book to others who need some comfort concentrating on what they are doing. ... Read more
