5-0 out of 5 stars My Utmost for His Highest
My day is not complete w/o reading " Utmost " each morniing and often at other times w/my brothers and sisters in Christ. Chambers, through his teaching, tells us that striving to become Christlike is not good enough. His lesson about not being allowed to remain on the mountain w/God has been more valuable to me than any other. God's timing is reflected in every daily message and has made each day another wonderful day in His Kingdom.I have purchased many copies of this book and given them to many people, including those in prison. Thanks be to God for Oswald Chambers. P.S.-I just ordered " The Complete Works..." based on reviews on this site and will share it willingly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best devotional
The best devotional I have ever read.A must for all serious Christians, especially at the beginning of their walk with God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent daily reading to keep you focused on Him
I love this daily devotional book. I read it every morning, faithfully, before I do anything else. It gives me a word for today and thoughts to ponder on all morning. It forces me to go to my Bible and look up reference scriptures, and it keeps me hungry for God's Word. Without this devotional (spoken in todays language) my mornings would be confused and off course. I thank Oswald Chambers and his family for this new version and I plan to give it as a gift in the future.Jennifer Rankins ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book on Prayer you may ever need to read!
Oswald Chambers, author of "My Utmost For His Highest" devotional, of which I've been a dedicated fan for DECADES, gently demonstrates where MOST prayers go wrong. Prayers tend to be about ME not about HIM and my RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. We are so easily distracted in our angst and stress and concern for others and our situations, that without even realizing it, our prayers are too often "wish lists" misguided by our overwhelming, sometimes, blinding needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding God's Kingdom and then staying in it.
This is a magnificent book for understanding God. It takes you further into God's ways of bringing us closer to his heart and learning how to live there forever. It tells of the wonderful power of the Holy Spirit andunderstanding, what we use to think before reading this book,"unanswered prayers". Beautifully written with heartfelt prayersat the end of each chapter. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An extrordinary, easy to read, wonderful commentary
"If You Will Ask", by Oswald Chambers,is a wonderful book! Inthe very firstchapter, Mr Chambers explains HOW weshould pray.Hesays,"very evidently, our ideas about prayer and JesusChrist's[ideas], are not the same.Prayer to Him is not a way to get thingsfromGod, but so that we may get to knowGod. He goes on to say that "ourLordnever once referred to unansweredprayer; God always answers prayer,if wepray in the name of Jesus.Furthermore,he writes that it's not sotrue that{prayer changes Things} as that prayerchanges Us and then Wechange things. We're not to ask God to do what Hecreated us to do. When we pray, Thingsremain the same, but We begin to bedifferent.Heexplains that, "the goodof praying is that it gets us to know Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The impact of Oswald Chambers Books on Alcoholics Anonymous
I hasten to incorporate and embrace the review of Oswald Chambers's Studies in the Sermon on the Mount that, due to my own error in posting, was credited to my colleague Terry Dunford.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alcoholics Anonymous and The Oswald Chambers Influence
I was delighted to see this particular title listed among your Owald Chambers books for sale. I have devoted 15 years to researching and writing about the Biblical roots and influences in early A.A.'s Christian Fellowship. And no one can fully grasp the story of early A.A., its cures, and its principles and practices without understanding the importance that the pioneers attached to the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5 to 7). Sadly, a number of AAs have settled for the belief that Emmet Fox's Sermon on the Mount was the cornerstone of A.A.'s sermon emphasis. No so! The fact is that both A.A. co-founders Dr. Bob and Bill W. stated that the sermon itself contained the underlying philosophy of A.A. And my title The James Club: The Original A.A. Program's Absolute Essentials (http://www.dickb.com/JamesClub.com) contains a verse by verse study of the three parts of the Bible AAs considered essential--the sermon, the book of James, and 1 Corinthians 13. Hence it is with the Bible itself that A.A. students of spirituality should start. Next, however, they need to know how broad was the supplementary reading. And that is where Oswald Chambers comes in. Dr. Bob and his wife stressed the importance of the sermon, and they read it in their groups and in the early meetings. But Dr. Bob also accumulated, read, studied, and circulated the background sermon books. And I found these among his library (that came into the hands of his son and daughter). I encountered Oswald Chambers's Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, E. Stanley Jones's The Christ of the Mount, Emmet Fox's The Sermon on the Mount, several books by Robert E. Speer that covered parts of the subject, a number of books by Rev. Sam Shoemaker to the same end, several titles by Harry Emerson Fosdick such as The Manhood of the Master, and a number of books by Glenn Clark. And all of these presented a broad field of interpretive writings on Jesus's sermon that enhanced the early pioneers' understanding. And if one takes Chambers's title and sets it alongside Jones's title, he will see that these two writers were, in effect, contending that the gift of the holy spirit without the sermon on the mount in practice was as inadequate as the sermon on the mount in practice without the power of the holy spirit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible Insights into Jesus' Teaching
Among all the doctrine, parables, and lessons of the Bible, none is as difficult to walk in as The Sermon on the Mount. Jesus' teachings, captured in Matthew 5, challenge and convict all thoughtful believers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Doctrine
I think Mr. Chambers's book is exciting because unlike most people, he actually read the book of Job.He uses Job's experiences not as a springboard in to general, vague, and platitudinous ramblings about suffering in general, but he discusses Job's suffering in specific. His loyalty and love of the text is reason enough to buy this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Good and gracious
Sometimes the healing process can hurt. Job was a person like us and allof us can see a little bit of Job in us. Chambers masterfully brings outthe fact that suffering IS NOT the curse of God or because we havecommitted wrongs. Job is shown to be moving CLOSER to God in histribulation rather than further from God [which some modern commentariesdo]--suffering, trials and problems ARE a part of human existence andbetter is the person who will see God ABOVE it as they must travel throughit.5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for the Devastated
This book is incisive and speaks life into the heart of a bewilderedChristian who is at a loss to grasp the "higher ways" of God; aprophetic perspective on suffering that may ease the pain and add grit tothe soul... ... Read more

Some have commented that Chamber's "Utmost..." is not as accessibleand practical as Spurgeon's "Morning..." or "Evening..."
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended if you're serious about your Walk.
I have friends who don't like O.C. because they say they didn't get anything out of /My Utmost for His Highest/.I first got a copy of Utmost when I was a teenager and it was 10 years before I was at the point where I could learn something from it.These Complete Works go above and beyond Utmost both in breadth and depth of study.

5-0 out of 5 stars The law and the light
One of the greatest versions of the Bible ever printed. A daily old and new testament reading along with a selection from Chambers. Reading the law and the light together is the only way to read the Book. They are tied together by a reading from the greatest Christian wiriter of the last two hundred years. You can take the paper back version anywhere in the world with you and never be far from Christ. If you can find one, get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional devotional
I have been reading this Bible through for 9 years and love it more each year. The insight into the Word from Oswald Chambers only enhances what the Holy Spirit shows us in the Word.Oswald Chambers loved Jesus Christ and listened so intently to the Holy Spirit as He spoke to him, that the devotionals placed before each day's reading only deepen the spiritual insight. How many books can you say that when you finish it on December 31, you can't wait to start reading it all over again on January 1?!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A tool for helping every Christian grow in his/her walk with the Lord.
Mr. Chambers writes with "user-friendly" language and speaks to your heart. The format is easy to read and is set up to be completed easily by those with busy schedules as well as for those with more free time.Furthermore, beginning with page 1, I wanted the truths from the book to become a part of me, which I to attribute to the author's genuine and sincere concern for every reader's spiritual growth. In short, I was inspired to become more for the Lord through studying Prayer:A Holy Occupation.

1-0 out of 5 stars You might be disappointed with this book....
I enjoy Oswald Chambers and typically review his books very highly (My Utmost for His Highest, Studies on the Sermon on the Mount) but was disappointed with this particular book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great complilation from a great writer
This book is composed of gems on the topic of prayer from Chambers' various books --- regrouped for concentrated study of various "requirements" of prayer: Obedience, Simplicity, Communion, etc.All the excerpts are conveniently indexed back to the original source.Questions are interspersed throughout the text to provoke deeper consideration of each subject.Every turn of the page brings another profound insight, and it's a book that can be referred to again and again.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Taster for the Eternal
Oswald Chambers is one of the greatest Christian spiritual mentors one could hope for. This book is actually a collection from his writings of some of the most throught-provoking statements he has made about thegenuineness of Christian living and the vitality of Christian intimacy witha intensely personal, if often unfathomable God. He dares to go into thedifficult areas of faith, without a whiff of unpalatable jargonism or easyplatitudes that grate. The collection is arranged thematically aroundthoughts about Faith in relation to the world, the flesh, the evil, ourheart, minds and soul. The profoundity inherent in his comments stirs thedeepest thought and soul-searching, an assessment of where thebeliever-pilgrim is en route to Zion. Each page contains a series ofquestions which probe the inner recesses of our heart and an honestconsideration of where one stands as a struggling christian. For example,"when I am surrounded by darkness, do I see nothing or do I see God?Do I consider darkness an opportunity to rest or a reason to becomerestless? What good reason might God have for keeping me in the dark"?And "Am I tied down by my faith in earthly convictions or set fromfrom earthly convictions by faith in heavenly promises?" "Am I achannel of God's blessing to others or only a consumer?". Folks,Chambers cuts to the chase and asks deep questions we would do well torepeatedly confront in our own lives. Hopefully, this excellent collectionwill be a taster to introduce the reader to Chambers other books -particularly the incredible "Baffled to Fight better", "Thehighest good", and "Christian disciplines". Chambers isperhaps best know for his "My Utmost for His Highest" collectionof daily meditations but this is a writer whose other books meritwidespread reading, particularly if you are struggling with believing infaith and trust in the goodness of God when all the evidence around youseems to contradict this. Chambers inspires, and humbles the reader and hishonest writings offers solace and courage for the soul, and a hope to carryon that is firmly rooted in Jesus Christ, what He has done, and all that isto come. This book is a great "taster" to Chamber's work ingeneral and a wonderful book to keep on the desk, to flip through duringthe course of the day as an aid to rise above the mundanity of life andliving, to remind ourselves of what's really important, to invest in us aperspective of the eternal that will transform and energise how we live ourlives as aliens and strangers on this planet. Food for the soul and fuelfor the mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Journey
I have read this book at the beginning of the year for the past 6 years.I find that as Oswald takes me on a journey through the lives of the patriarchs (Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph)in the book of Genesis, it isactually a portrait my life. All of the weaknesses, blunders, fears, failures, trials, temptations, and disappointments the patriarchs faced, Iface them as well.Yet, Oswald makes it very clear that the God whoinitiated the relationship with these patriarchs also took theresponsibility for keeping them. This book gives me so much comfortbecause it makes very clear the intimacy God desires in a relationship withmen. Moreover, he does not want our weaknesses, failures, blunder, etc. tobe a hinderance in our relationship with him, but a stepping stone intodeeper intimacy; and indication of how much we really need him. I thinkthis book must be read meditatively, and with a heart seeking intimacy withGod. ... Read more
