5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL study of God's Word!
I studied this material when Dr Stringfellow was writing it. He was Associate Pastor at my church, First Baptist Van Nuys, CA. Our pastor, Dr Jess Moody invited Dr Stringfellow to share the material with the whole church, so Dr Moody arranged for our church to open a seminary, and Dr Stringfellow "tried out" the material on our church, in a class attended by those who were interested. The material was fascinating, and once Dr Stringellow had "ironed out the wrinkles", he published the book!

This book is one of the most comprehensive bible study books. You will learn a lot and the format facilitates your memorization of scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth Biblical study guide
I used this workbook about five years ago when I undertook a comprehensive study of the Bible on my own - from Genesis through Revelations. This study guide along with my Life Applications Bible was an excellent resource; I accomplished that important goal.I am now using a second copy to start again and am looking forward to another meaningful journey. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Christianity, not "replacement theology"
To correct the previous reviewer's post, Dever's position on Israel is not some new "replacement" theology but the historic Christian understanding prior to the invent of 19th century dispensational theology. Dever views God's promises to Israel in light of a covenantal structure rather than a dispensational one. The Old Covenant completely fulfilled in Christ, must now be viewed through His fulfillment and establishment of the New.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could be a great book, but has one big flaw.
I really would like to give this book a five star review. The book is I will admit very helpful for those of us going into the seminary. Each chapter is a sermon based upon a book of the Bible. In other words, from Genesis forward, each book of the Bible is given an overview of its importance and its need in the larger text of the Bible. For those who will be ministers, this book helps you to see how you too can give an "overview" sermon on a particular book of the Bible. For those of you who will be teachers, this book helps you to gain extra information that can help you when teaching a class on Old Testament theology. The writing is clear, the sermons are engaging, and Pastor Mark Dever knows a lot of what he is talking about. It is good to know and have examples on how one can use the Old Testament in ministry, whether teaching or preaching, because so many people (sadly) have a harder time understanding the OT more than understanding the NT.Thus I would really like to give this book a five star review because I know that I will use it when I teach and minister the Old Testament when I finish up my seminary program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for Managing One's Thought Processes
Joyce Meyer believes that faulty behavior stems from faulty thinking. She warns against mistaking inconveniences for trials (p. 231), and reminds us that problems defeat us when we think that they are bigger than God (p. 240). We must remember that we will always have problems in this world because the Lord Himself told us that "In the world you have tribulation..." If we wait to have the right attitude once there is nothing around us to worry about, that moment will never come (p. 127).
5-0 out of 5 stars Renewing your mind
This book is one of the most enlightening and life changing books I've ever read. The spirit of the Lord was really working thru Joyce Meyer as she penned this book. She gives her testimony as she teaches biblicial prinicples, in order to live a Victorious Christian Life. I encourage you to purchase this book right now and read it. I will richly bless you life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Bible Reading Experience
I love this Bible in chronological order. I've read through it several times and I've been reading it each day throughout this year. LaGard Smith has created an unforgettable experience in arranging the Bible content into a different format. This slight shifting makes the stories fresh and alive in a new way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone interested in the Bible should read this at least once
I have been a Christian for many years, and every year, start out with the good intentions of reading the Bible in its entirety THIS year. Then, life gets in the way....and you know the rest of the story. Guilt and frustration kept me from picking up where I left off. Well, with this Bible, no more guilt and frustration!
5-0 out of 5 stars New Insight
This Bible offers new insight to the Holy Scriptures.I have always found the Old Testament, in particular, difficult to keep up with in a historical context. This Bible offers a concise chain of events, while also giving helpful commentary and providing Scripture references for me to easily see parallels from book to book.It has given me a whole new understanding of God's word.I would recommend that anyone who wants to thoroughly study Scripture, pick up this Bible. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars To Stephan C. Donahue: Can you say "ad hominem"?
To Stephan C. Donahue in response to your review, your ad hominem argument is self evident. For those whose Latin may be a tad rusty: In Donahue's review he appeals to personal considerations and attacks "against the man" (the author) rather than to fact or reason.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Unbiased
The scholarship is solid, there is a profound attempt to be unbiased and let the facts speak for themselves, and there are few preconceived notions that affect the analysis. The author truly strives to remain theologically and doctrinally neutral regarding the various Christian denominations, and the result should not be surprising to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly in-depth look into biblical Greek
This book is a profound eye-opener regarding the translations we use everyday and how time and bias has shaped them. The conclusion is a huge suprise but beautifully founded. This book is a masterpiece for anyone looking to truly understand the nature of how we got the bible today or who is looking for truth. All the major arguements of doctrine stem greatly from scpriture. It becomes impossible to argue or find the truth an arguement without first understanding the translation process and which translation brings us the closest to what the original Greek/Hebrew writers meant. If understanding the God of the bible matters to you, buy this book. It will become the cornerstone of your education as it has become mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On!!!
I'm a big fan of Erwin McManus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Echoing a revolution
This book is not unlike McManus's other writing, yet it brings in a new inspiring energy to Christian living. McManus makes it clear that we can live life to the fullest by pursuing every moment. Living life passively is a waste of life. Living life actively creates new adventure and new opportunities for God to work. Erwin is the man!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate and Intense...A Great Book
Erwin Raphael McManus, author of UPRISING and THE BARBARIAN WAY, fills readers with hope and motivation in CHASING DAYLIGHT: Seize the Power of Every Moment. Previously published as SEIZING YOUR DIVINE MOMENT, the book challenges readers to look at their dreams through God's lenses and reflect on their true calling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of substance, little context
This book presents basic religious texts of a variety of religions, eastern and western, with a more or less objective presentation. However, I found the introductory materials for each religion to be overly academic at times, sometimes raising as many questions as it answered. If you're looking for an entry-level survey of what the world's religions believe -- an interpretation of the doctrines these scriptures lay out -- this may not be the best resource available.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!
This is a great Bible.Straight word of God with easy wording for kids.Amazon has the cheapest price for new copies on the internet today.Even buying the bibles from the Group (publisher), you'll pay 15.99 for HUGE quantities or 19.99 for just one. This is a steal when you consider the free shipping bonus!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun alive and really applicable
If you have a child between 6-12, this is THE Bible to get. The new living translation really brings the Bible to life and is written simply. Learning about Jesus shouldn't be complicated but simple to understand! It also shows the kids how to apply the Bible in their lives. I love the KJV but have found it a hard read at times, not so with this. It also has a daily reading list for kids along with a question to answer to get them thinking. In addition, it has a family devotion section which is great for the family to get involved! There are fun facts, a time line, and object lessons to help them relate that hey can do easily at home. It's packed with fun so that kids can learn in a fun involved way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands On gets a big Thumbs Up
I have been working with kids and their families for over ten years, and I think this is the best Bible for kids I have ever come across. The NLT is an easy read that makes sense to kids and yet maintains the integrity of being a translation and not a paraphrase. The Bible has a fun look and feel for kids and plenty of age appropriate helps. What puts this Bible over the top though, is the Hands On suggestions that serve as object lessons for key scriptures. If you are a parent looking for creative ideas to teach your kid God's word then this Bible is for you.Check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly
I first studied biblical Hebrew in college forty years ago.Hebrew is so very different from Western European languages that it was hard for me to wrap my mind around it.Dobson's book aims at making the study of Hebrew fun and at giving the student success each step of the way.He aims to get the student reading worthwhile sentences and many of them as soon as possible. It is still the learning of a language, so it is not a "for dummies" project. But, Dobson presents the most frequent verb forms first and gets those drilled into the student's mind so they become very familiar. He does this rather than the approach used by Weingreen in my college class in which the student memorizes all forms in a paradigm and then later tries to pull some meaning out of the paradigms in the experience of translating.I especially like the audio CD.It allows the student to engage hearing as well as seeing in fixing a lesson in the mind.Dobson attempts to use current understanding of how one learns in order to make the material familiar territory for the student.I think I might not have let my Hebrew lapse over the decades had I learned with an approach like Dobson's the first time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Mr. Dobson teaches in a way that is both very informative, and often humorous. By the completion of this book, I had translated the book of Jonah, as well as passages from nearly every book in the Old Testament. I would highly recommend this book to someone who wants to learn Biblical Hebrew, even if you (as I did) already have some knowledge of the language. This is truly a profound book. I learned much more than I expected to learn when I bought this book. My only complaint, is that the meanings listed for words are in (abstract) english, such as the Hebrew word "chai" which Mr. Dobson says means "life" which it does, but the word actually means "stomach" and was a Hebrew sign of life. Though you would rarely even consider translating the word as "stomach" it is nice to know the ancient meanings behind the Hebrew your reading... still, a very good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Bible
This is the best Bible I have ever purchased. 4 versions side by side allows you to compare verses and add a fuller understanding to your daily study. I recommend it to everyone who wants to study but is intimidated by the King James Version, which is my personal favorite, but can be difficult to understand.
3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better parallel Bibles
Zondervan publishes two major parallel Bibles: Today's Parallel Bible (this one) and the Comparative Study Bible, which is simply a parallel Bible featuringNIV, KJV, NASB (New American Standard Bible, 1995 updated edition), and Amplified Bible. Both contain NIV, KJV, and NASB (updated). The only difference between these two is NLT (New Living Translation, 1st edition, 1996) in this one vs. Aplified Bible in the Comparative Study Bible. I prefer this one because the Amplified Bible is very unreliable, giving meanings of the words unfound in the original language. There are much better word-study references available.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good study Bible but good to read at one's leisure
The leather version is overpriced. This is just another "basic Bible" from cover to cover without any references, maps, an index, or chapter introduction/summaries.It does, however, have footnotes that give alternative Greek or Hebrew meaning of certain words. The margins are also very narrow and the pages quite thin (to fit in all 4 translations).I'd recommend this book for devotional readings but not Bible study (unless you don't mind writing notes in another notebook). ... This Bible is perfect for all ages. It gives complete doctrines and understanding of our Catholic faith. I am a convert to the church for 4 years now, and this Bible has been a inspiration to me. I reccomend that you purchase Catholicism for Dummies as a companion to your studies.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR EVERY CATHOLIC; TRULY UNIVERSAL
We as Catholic Christians face the most unique times of the twenty-first century. This remarkable study bible answers many questions that many have asked about the ancient faith founded by Jesus Christ. This is rich in not only Biblical proofs but also proofs from the Catechism itself. This reinforces the ancient practice of Holy Scripture and the Holy Tradition of the Apostles as the twin pillers of the faith. As a Catholic Christian, I feel blessed by this Marvelous work and a Wonder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent colorful resources that gives you insight into each N.T. book
This is one of the most helpful resources to me when preparing Bible studies and messages. Each N.T. book is written by a reputable, evangelical scholar who has expertise in that particular book. For each N.T. book, there is a very helpful capsule in the beginning that tells you the important facts of each book (author, date, occasion, and key themes).Next, there is a helpful brief commentary for the whole book. There are excellent, color in-text maps as you read the commentary.Furthermore, there are great feature articles that give you insights into some of the pertinent beliefs, gods/goddesses/ key terms that are featured in the N.T. book. There is also a capsule on "reflections" that help the reader ponder and meditate on key themes and concepts. Finally, there is a wonderful annotated bibliography at the end of each book for further, suggested reading.
3-0 out of 5 stars good but not that good
The title "Illustrated" compel me to expect a commentary that be tastily read through cover-to-cover.However, I found its photos are not as bright as Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary.Holding the name "Commentary", I feel like reading an extensive study bible when there is no bible text; this commentary explains selected word or phrase of almost every verse in the New Testament. And honestly, as it claims to enlighten "Bible Background", I regard NT Wright's The Challenge of Jesus gives much better cultural-historical illumination to the Gospel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great NT Commentary for the Newbie
While William Barclay's set on the NT is my favorite and should be on the bookshelf of every serious student of the NT, Zondervan's Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary is probably the most friendly for the newcomer or teenage Bible student. Unlike Barclay's set, this has glossy paper and excellent illustrations, maps, and insets. These come closest to resembling college textbooks in their format and appearance. They are likely to appeal to high school and college age kids, and old guys like me who like to sit on the sofa and read a Bible commentary that just looks good and is interesting. Again, Zondervan has produced a product with mass appeal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I miss the New Vulgate
I am thrilled that Navarre is now publishing the New Testament in hardback. However, I wish that the editors would do with the NT what they have done with the OT in including the New Vulgate as well as the RSV and the outstanding commentary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Navarre Bible
I have been using the Navarre Bible, Gospels and Acts for a bible study at church.I have found the commentary to be one of the best that I have read.It delivers extensive historical background as well as being equally strong in spiritual growth and development. This bible came highly reccommended to us by our associate pastor who has served for several years as a seminary instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Scriptural commentary available
The advantage of this compilation of the Navarre Bible's separate Gospel narratives and Acts is that it preserves the extended commentary of the individual volumes.Although the similar Navarre New Testament Compact Edition is excellent, its commentary is abbreviated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good translation
I am no authority on Quran translations, but was told by a Christian who has spent his life ministering to Muslims and studying Islam that this is the best English translation out there. Many translations put the Quran into Western-acceptable terms; this version does not. If you want to read what Arabs read, this is probably the closest you will get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Also an Important Reference and Commentary
Do not view this book as merely a "defense of the resurrection" - a number of more slender volumes can accomplish that feat. This book is instead a significant historical and theological treatment of the idea and doctrine of the resurrection within a wide variety of ancient sources. While it does result in an affirmation of the historic Christian position that Jesus indeed rose from the dead, this book also serves more broadly as an historical and theological reference work.
2-0 out of 5 stars Traditionalist Propaganda, Sadly
Sadly, Wright throws up the facade for his Evangelical readership that Early Christian resurrection stories should be taken as literal and historically defensible.Should we expect anything different from someone socio-religiously tethered to his own conservative community and market?Wright foists upon his readers technical propaganda aimed at certifying the myths of his modern Western religious tradition. His often grossly dishonest use of primary literature characterizes his tendentious manipulation of the ancient literary data. This work is not an open historical inquiry, but an apology sold to his already deluded market. The one redeeming value of the work is that Wright surveys a large array of ancient literary sources, and so one gains a substantial list of primary references for investigation. If, however, you wish to read a far more balanced work on the topic, might I recommend G. Riley's Resurrection Reconsidered.Riley is a true Classicist and scholar of nascent Christian traditions, not a traditionalist or apologist.
2-0 out of 5 stars There's an Obvious Explanation being IGNORED
As usual, NT Wright has missed the Correct Answer in his quest to shore up the fading structure of Christianity.

4-0 out of 5 stars hyper critical
I've read this book several times and I think it is a nice introduction to Christian Apologetics.I see many reviewers bashing this book's simplicity.Well, it was written to be that way.The information is presented with much more detail in Mcdowell's "evidence" books, this book is like an overview. The liar, lunatic, or Lord arguement is a valid one, if presented properly. Once you show the validity of the Scriptures, there are no other options. Legend has no place, as the new testament contains oral traditions that can be accurately dated to within 2 years of Jesus' crucification, and the whole new testament written by first hand witnesses or a close associate of a first hand witness. Some one claimed that a possibility was that a man named Jesus might have never existed.Just know, you are in the SEVERE minority here. Most skeptics even agree that he indeed existed.Anyways, there are better apologist out there, but this is an excellent introduction for a spiritual seeker( it can be read in a couple of hours). There is much more info out there if one truly wants to seek. Not everyone does, as it's rather uncomfortable to have their unbelief threatened, so they hide behind so called intellectual hurdles, putting all their effort into asking questions, instead of finding answers.
4-0 out of 5 stars To the Point
This is a good little book. It's strongest characteristic is that it's to the point and efficient, in the way it presents its case/information.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Than a Carpenter

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I am a pastor of a congregation and we are using this as a congregational-wide discussion on the theology of stewardship. What I treasure about this book is that it starts with a good theological background before getting into nuts and bolts sorts of issues.Because Powell argues that all of life is about stewardship, this book is an excellent read for those who are tired of seeing people who only associate stewardship with church fundraising.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good News about money
Lots of books toss around "Good News" this and "Good News" that. Mostly they are full of some sort of scheme of guilt and pride that typically fails at resembling anything of good news.
