5-0 out of 5 stars The Book Mormons Do Not Want You To Read
This book offers a fascinating analysis of the "Book of Mormon," the foundational document for the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. Mormon reviewers fairly bristle at this book. This offers an excellent analysis of the highly dubious claims by Joseph Smith that he received the Book of Mormon from heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am convinced
Only a few pieces of evidence presented in this book are really astonishing. Most of the evidences are small; but added up they deliver a more persausive argument, to me, that Joseph Smith is a false prophet than the Pro-Mormon literature offers in Smith's favor.

5-0 out of 5 stars It will help you focus on a more specific view
This is a terrific book and helps as a way of refocusing the view of how you think about the culture described in the Book of Mormon. If you are a believer, ... it helps to make things more specific and yet less cut and dried. Just like real life.5-0 out of 5 stars Interested in ancient American cultures and/or Mormons?
The title describes exactly what this book is.Sorenson takes us into his world as asocio-cultural anthropologist, helping us understand what the different archeological and historical remains can tell us about the manyaspects of the everyday lives of ancient peoples. The book isintentionally simple, you won't find in depth hypothosis' or commentary, but it is written at a level beneficial for newcomers as well as for thosewho already know much about ancient American culture. A small section ofeach topic cites Book of Mormon references that may be relative to thesubject matter. Sorenson's intent is not to validate the history in theBook of Mormon through archeological discovery, but rather to help usunderstand the cultures that were a part of, or influenced, the peoples inthat book-much like knowing about ancient Jewish culture helps us betterunderstand the events in the New Testament. This book has added animportant aspect to my study of the Book of Mormon, and as a visitor toruins in Mexico, added life and meaning to what I saw there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Twenty-three articles providing fresh insights into many aspects of the Book of Mormon
While no reading of commentary should replace direct study of scripture, reading insightful essays such as these can certainly cast fresh light on aspects of the Book of Mormon you may have missed, were unclear about, or you gain a bit more background for things you already are familiar with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting collection of essays
"Rediscovering the Book of Mormon" is a useful volume of essays dealing with the literary texture, variety and richness of the Book of Mormon that shows Joseph Smith could not have possibly authored the text in the 19th century.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting work of religious literature
While I am not a 'believer' in Mormonism in any sense, I have often looked at the book of Mormon with fascination in the secondhand bookstores here.Quite often it is tucked away in the religious section like a Gideon's New Testament, alluring yet strange.
3-0 out of 5 stars another testament of Joseph Smith, jr.
Reviewing a religious scripture feels somewhat strange and awkward. Would you review the Bible or the Koran? At the same time, it's difficult to escape the Book of Mormon, just as you can't seem to get rid of those LDS missonaries roaming up and down the country on their bicycles, with their "Elder Johnson" nametags and too-short haircuts. They speak pretty good Swedish too, albeit with a terrible accent. By the way, here in Sweden, the LDS Church wants to look vaguely "politically correct", so they even use young women as missionaries. "Sister Johnson", I believe?
5-0 out of 5 stars See For Yourself

5-0 out of 5 stars Past and present Book of Mormon geography theories
This book deals with the varoius proposed geographies of the Book of Mormon since its initial publication in 1830. Sorenson does an excellent job in showing the requirements of the Book of Mormon volume and the antiquity of a limited geography model among Latter-day Saints, contra critics who claim it is nothing short of a construct by Sorenson from the 1980s and a Mormon tactic to "protect" the Book of Mormon from alleged archaeological problems.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Aid to the Book of Mormon Scholar
The Geography of Book of Mormon Events: A Source Book is a valuable resource to Book of Mormon scholars. It presents, in order, dozens and dozens of speculative maps made by Book of Mormon scholars, and includes amazing detail. The book also includes copious amounts of textual information about the Book of Mormon places, quoting directly from scripture and giving sources. It also presents a final speculative map based solely on the text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What have we learned about the Book of Mormon since its publication?
The ridicule of the Book of Mormon began before it was even published. Its critics have howled about various things in the book that have been perceived as flaws by one generation or another. It is interesting how the criticism have changed since 1830.To the first critics it seemed that there was too much common vernacular in the book (Jonathanisms). They didn't like a man claiming to talk with God face to face (many still don't).They found many of the claims about how these ancient inhabitants of the Americas lived.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very profound and well written
Nibley examines the Book of Mormon and places it inthe sublimnity it deserves. The language in the scripture is brought to light as being of ancient origin and akin to archaic hebrew. The phraseology might seemstrange in English, however for Hebrew it is commonplace. Specific writingstyles ofancient Hebrew, which were not discovered till this century, are uncovered in the Book of Mormon by Nibley. Ostensibly, he demonstrates validity and truth in the Book of Mormon that cannot be refuted, albeit thebest way to find out is by reading it yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of justifying evidence of Book of Mormon validity.
Hugh Nibley has done it again. This book is an in-depth study of things mentioned in the Book of Mormon which were unknowable at the time the Book of Mormonwas published, as well as a look at technical structure which would have been impossible to fake."Since Cumorah"compares BM descriptions and ideas with recent finds like the Dead Sea Scrolls.Too many bulls eyes for random shooting.Nibley is again asking for scholarly review knowing that the book will withstand all challenges. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Afraid at first
I was afraid to read this at first, because I don't like the idea of messing around with scripture. That's why we still use the King James Version.HOWEVER... I love this book.I never felt like anything was lost.Only clarified.I won't let this book replace my scriptures, but it will never be far away.GREAT Job Tim.Thank you sooo sooo much.I bought it in a used book store, and I feel very fortunate to have found it.I was unaware of it before that moment. My teenager is reading it now. Thanks again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST have for religionists
This book is basically a rewritten version of The Book Of Mormon in contemporary English and reads at about a middle school level of difficulty. It eliminate the archaic prose of words like the "thee", "thou", "verily", "hast" and other KJV biblical text.A comparison could be the KING JAMES BIBLE rewritten into the easier to understand NEW LIVING TRANSLATION.
5-0 out of 5 stars Every Mormon Home Should Have
As a former seminary teacher and now gospel doctorine teacher, this "guide" makes reading the Book of Mormon much easier and understandable. It's like have a scriptorian next to you explaining what you just read, and yet, it is written with flow, like a novel, so you don't want to put it down.I finished the whole Book of Mormon in one week.I have a more vivid understanding and mental references now.I completed the prophets challenge. I can't wait to read this 2-3 times a year. It is not like other scriptures "re-written" losing translation, this is "right on", and has the same spirit of revelation attending you as it is when you are reading from the Book of Mormon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Automaticity a "weak link"?
Amazon's editorial review lists Scott Dunn's essay on "automaticity" as a "weak link" in this volume.I frankly thought it was the most compelling essay in the whole book; it reconciles some conflicting lines of evidence that competing theories of "inspiration" and "fraud" fail to adequately take into account.Overall, this volume is an excellent sampling of critical Book of Mormon scholarship.High marks from me.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent critique of the Book of Mormon, however flawed
This is the follow-up collection of essays to Metcalfe's 1993 book "New Approaches to the Book of Mormon: Essays on critical methodology." This anthology, edited by Metcalfe and Dan Vogwl, is critical of the alleged ancient origins of the Book of Mormon and focuses on a number of topics. Dan Vogel's two essays were weak and errant. His discussion on 19th century anti-Masonic sentiment arising from the murder of Hook in 1826 and how this allegedly seeped its way into Joseph Smith's "Book of Mormon" added very little new information on the topic. His essay on the 3 and 8 witnesses to the Angel Moroni and the Book of Mormn plates relied too much on hearsay accounts to be credible, which was a disappointment, as Vogel is a historian who really should have done better with his sources.
5-0 out of 5 stars A new New approaches!
It is a great honour to have read "American Apocrypha" because it is what Book of Mormon really is, a holy book with unknown origins or authors, just as 1-4 Esdra, Enoch books etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all.
I certainly commend young readers who earnestly and sincerely try to read through the Book of Mormon.I know when I had tried to read it in grade school, it was very difficult for me to understand simply because my education to that point had not sufficed for the difficulty level of this sacred writ.
5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver
The King James style english of the current Book of Mormon confuses the heck out of me when I try to read it. I do not understand why, in the reformed Egyptian, it was written that way but I'm sure Joseph Smith had a good reason for putting it down that way on paper when he looked through the Urim & Thumb-um to get his revelation.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are very grateful for this book!
We are an LDS family who has faithful family scripture study and we encourage our children to also have scripture study on their own.The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon allows even the youngest reader to actually understand on their own what the Book of Mormon is saying. We have been very grateful for the knowledge, insights and love for the Book of Mormon that our younger children have been able to gain from reading this book.We do encourage our children who are older to read straight from the scriptures. However, when they do begin to, they already have a very good understanding and love for the Book of Mormon that they have gained from reading this easy to read version.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons that help us see Lehi and his descendants as real people in real situations
It is hard to believe that this was used as a manual for priesthood meetings! It is a wonderful book and helps anyone wishing to study the Book of Mormon to get a good perspective on what the book has to offer and how to approach it.This is not a text providing a narrative study of the Book of Mormon.Nor is it a book that tries to provide evidences of its truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Impeccable Scholarship
This powerfully insightful book was, and is, so enlightening that Joseph Fielding Smith (10th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) himself said that it ought to be studied by all members of the Church. Indeed, it should!4-0 out of 5 stars Great Insights

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Work
A fascinating book.I checked this book out at the library, transfered in from a Salt Lake City library.I used it when I was writing a report and compared it with the latest version of The Book Of Mormon.Through comparison, I was able to find and determine that the big changes between The Book of Mormon from 1830 and today were not just 'gramatical changes' but that entire passages had been re-written and meanings completely changed. An excellent comparison guide. ... John Welch does an excellent job in this book. His primary emphasis is on the Sermon on the Mount in a ritual/temple context. He explains the temple language used in the Sermon as well as scholarly ideas that the Greek text uses "mystery" or initiatory phrasing in expressing its ideas (using the idea of clothing, knowledge, etc.).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Several fine papers addressing aspects of the authorship of The Book of Mormon
Theories about the authorship of "The Book of Mormon" have sprouted ever since the rumors of the books existence reached the public in Palmyra, New York through the present day.It is natural for questions about the book would occur to believers who study the book regularly and it is understandable that non-believers would be interested in the various stories that have been concocted to explain the origins of the book.

This is a great book, it answers many of the questions put forth by anti-mormons about the book of mormon, goes into word print analysis, book of mormon translation, populations, coming forth of the book of mormon, the witnesses, the text, chiasmus, etc...after reading this book it leaves you with only one conclusion, Joseph Smith nor anyone in 1820-30's could have possibly wrote the book of mormon, and the only reasonable conclusion, translated by the gift and power of God!!! I would reccommend reading this book along with the Book of Mormon and praying to know the truth!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended book on Book of Mormon Evidences
This is perhaps one of the best books on the Book of Mormon I have ever read. Apart from being an absolute must on the shelves of every LDS bookshelf, this collection of well-researched essays provides overwhelming evidence that critics cannot honestly ignore or nit-pick against as they have for years now.
