5-0 out of 5 stars A good translation for the serious student
With all of the current debate over Bible translations, its hard to know where to turn. Some factions are even militant in their claims for one version over the other. And there can be no doubt that some of the newer translations are indeed lacking. But as a Pastor, I have found the NAS an invaluable study tool, and one I recommend for several reasons. 1 - If you are looking for more precise renderings in the nuances of the original autographs, especially the Greek, the NAS wins the day. Although the English may be a bit halting at times, it becomes quickly evident that there is increased clarity of meaning. Bear with it being a little "clunky", and you'll be rewarded by the treasures of the linguistic subtleties rising to the top. 2 - It makes an excellent bridge between the Elizabethan quaintness of the KJV and modern English. While nothing rivals the beauty and music of the KJV, the NAS still retains a stately reverence and never falls into familial contempt. It is true, there are some textual concerns over which manuscripts were used for translation in the NAS vs the KJV. But the majority of the differences are minor, and no major doctrine of the orthodox Christian faith suffers in the process. In fact, you'll probably find the themes emerging with more precision and clarity than ever before. For memorization, stick with King James. For serious study and teaching, pick up an NAS and enjoy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Bible
I have several translations but this is the bible I use all the time. It's compact but still very easy for me to read & I find this translation the easiest to understand. The imitation leather feels just like real leather. My mom asks me for it when she comes to visit because she finds it so easy to read & easy to handle so I'm getting her this bible for Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible review
The Bible I received was very nice and everything I expected..
4-0 out of 5 stars Energetic and Fresh
I purchased two of these NLT's in the last week - a paperback updated edition and the original NLT Bonded Leather. I do like the updated edition a little more - as it is a little more accurate in some areas of the text. I was once a KJV man. That was the Bible. Then i started to desire a little more realism and understandability. I switched to the NASB and NKJV for many years. But i must say that the other night i read almost all of 2 Samuel in the NLT - it keep me awake! This is a good translation - although it would be helpful to read a more literal translation and then make your own margin notes in the NLT (rather than the other way around). What is the best Bible Translation for YOU? - The one you read and fall in love with and that will lead you into a deeper walk with Jesus and experience of the Fullness of His Spirit. I recommend the NLT ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Bible is Awesome!
The TNIV XL Large Print Bible is a very convenient size -- it's thin, pliable, and easy to carry around. The print size is perfect for comfortable reading. I'm not sure what some of the other reviewers mean when they say the quality of this Bible and paper is not that good. I love the quality of this Bible (European leather), and I actually find the paper to be a bit thicker, although I prefer thin paper in my Bibles (I use a dry highlighter). I'm so happy to have found a Bible version that is easy to read yet is accurate. I'll be using this Bible for a long time to come, and I can't wait for the TNIV Concordance to come out soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Highly Accurate & Fluid Translation by the CBT!
Why is the TNIV a more accurate translation?
2-0 out of 5 stars Such poor quality
As the years go by, the quality of the bibles and books published by Zondervan decreases. It seems that large profits, boosted by the use of printers in "cheap" countries is what it is about. This book is far from well bound and the thin paper is of such a poor quality. The so-called larger type is actually the normal size for a bible of similar dimensions in many European countries.Maybe Zondervan should let Broadman and Holman look after the printing and binding: B&H produce better quality bibles with larger print (and a larger page size) on better quality thin paper for a price which is actually under than that of Zondervan for a similar product.

1-0 out of 5 stars King James Compact Large Print Bible
This is the tiniest so-called "large" print I have ever seen. It is not noticeably any bigger than the print in any bible. There is no way my vision-impaired Mother could read it, even though she can read other regular-print books. I have returned this bible and will look for another in a book store where I can see what I'm buying. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No Help AtAll
I PURCHASED THIS DICTIONARY/CONCORDANCE, THINKING I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET CLEARER INFORMATION ON WORDS AND/OR PHRASES USED IN THE BIBLE. THIS BOOK GIVES VERY VAGUE DEFINITIONS, AND DOES NOT HAVE MANY OF THE QUESTIONABLE WORDS IN IT. I DO NOT EVEN USE THIS BOOK; YOU WILL FIND MORE WORDS IN A WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY. WHEN YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR MORE DEPTH UNDERSTANDING, THIS BOOK IS NOT THE ONE. IT APPEARS THEY TRIED HARD, TO KEEP THE BOOK SMALL. BY COMPACTING BASIC WORDS, AND NOT ENOUGH WORDS THAT ONE MAY REALLY QUESTION. YOU GET LARGE PRINT BUT tiny DEFINITION. MOST INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK IS GOING TO BE IN YOUR BASIC BIBLE, GET A REAL CONCORDANCE, AND IF YOU MUST HAVE LARGE PRINT, YOU CAN BUY ONE OF THOSE MAGNIFICATION SHEETS TO LIE ON THE PAGE. BETTER TO HAVE A BIG BOOK, WITH MUCH INFORMATION, THAN A SMALL BOOK, WITH BIG PRINT AND little INFORMATION.

2-0 out of 5 stars By combining, you're losing...
While it appears to be a good tool--having a 2-in-1 approach, this book falls short by the very thing it promotes: two books in one.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars "Large Print"May Mislead
Every Bible is a Good Book, so I don't criticize the content -- however, we found that the print was smaller than even the pew Bibles in our church. Therefore, I returned them, and continue the search for some very large print Bibles to be used by folks who have poor eyesight.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is LARGE PRINT?!!!
I bought this Bible for my 84-year-old mother who is having difficulty seeing, and while the print in this Bible is larger than the print in a phone book, it looks like no larger than 12 point print--the same size as in a normal book. The Bible is the Bible, and the NRSV is a great translation, but I was really disappointed by the publisher's definition of large print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Thin Bible for Preaching
Yes, the title, "Large Print" is misleading. HOWEVER, this is a very thin bible and is great for the pulpit. Most NRSV's I have found are 2+ inches thick or are of a 'gift bible' quality. This one is not as cumbersome as the thicker texts nor as cheap. There are also some textual notes included in this Bible which others may lack (e.g, the slightly thicker Oxford, black leather at 1.4 inches). If you are looking for a good pulpit Bible, I'd recommend this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars With all my heart, and mind, and strength...
The Book of Common Prayer (1979) is the latest, complete BCP used by the American branch of the Anglicans, the Episcopal church. There have been many books that have had the title 'Book of Common Prayer' since the first one appeared in 1549; it has been used continuously in one edition or another in the Anglican tradition since 1559; the 'main' edition remains the 1662 edition. The American church modified the Book of Common Prayer for its own use beginning shortly after the Revolutionary War -- this book is the successor of a long and worthy tradition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Truth and Inspiration In The Meaning of the Words
The Bible, one of the most important books ever written, at least the New Testament, was written in the vulgate marketplace Greek which was often the common language in a multi-language Roman Empire. As Paul Ehrman showed in his book "Misquoting Jesus" as these books were translated and copied, the words sometimes too on different meaning. With this in mind, Wills instead focuses on trying to understand the meaning behind the words and actions of Jesus recorded in the Gospels and spoken of in his follower's letters. Rather than shying away from the more uncomfortable or seemingly misplaced passages Wills uses this as his starting off point. As he noted, in the 18th century Thomas Jefferson went about to edit his own version of the Gospels, filtering out what seemed incongruous, misplaced or was not representative of the "kind and gentle" Jesus or were not the part of a wise man's story, including the crucifixion.Today this is how we often want to view Jesus: ever kind, gentle, soft spoken, though we now love to focus on the crushing suffering of the crucifixion.
5-0 out of 5 stars The True Jesus
This book is awesome - a must read.It is in essence a rescue mission to free the true Jesus who has been kidnapped by established churches and politicians in our day.Reading this book is a liberating and affirming experience. As an American Christian who has felt socially and politically bludgeoned by "Christians" in our churches and political offices in the last decade, I read this book with tears in my eyes and joy in my heart for truth does, indeed, set us free. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to put his/her name on a ballot for office in this country - the message is a message for all mankind no matter what one's "religious affiliation."

4-0 out of 5 stars Intrigueing, ultimately flawed
Garry Wills is an excellent scholar and writer, with a wide range of interests. His book What Jesus Meant is a great read, and he makes a herculean effort to break out of the mold of much recent scholarship, particularly the Jesus Seminar. However in the end he succumbs to many of the same maladies he identifies in those he criticizes.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
The NASB Visual Reference Bible carries the name 'World' as the publishing house; but, surprise, surprise!World was bought out by the country's leading supplier of cheap, inferior-quality Bibles, the one and only Thomas Nelson. Not that World Bibles were that great to begin with. Anyway, this is a glue-bound product, so it won't last very long. The print is large and fairly dark, with World's visual reference system---consisting of four symbols representing what area the verse could represent: i.e., Messianic prophecy; a verse relating to the Second Coming; Miracles; or Prophecy. There is a 60-odd page concordance, and in-verse references. Unfortunately, this has words of Christ in red---actually, it's words of Christ in brown, which vary in shade from page to page sometimes. There are also Book Intros and Themes. This is a nice edition of the NASB, especially because of the print size. It's better than some and worse than others. I have the burgundy bonded leather edition; but it comes in hardback and paperback as well. ... Read more

Whether you use the KJV because of preference or conviction, you won't find a better selection of study helps in a Study Bible. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Giant Print Print Bible That Lives Up To Its Name!
I am extremely pleased with this Bible. Too many "giant print" Bibles out there are not what they claim to be. I have so-called giant print bibles from Nelson (publisher of the New King James Version) and from Zondervan (publisher of the New International Version) that are disappointing due to the fact that the print is only moderately larger than the norm. This Bible, however, truly is what it claims to be: 14 point type that is truly easy to read. And at only twenty-seven dollars, this is a real bargain! The imitation leather (mine is burgundy) is very nice and quite durable. If you are seeking a Bible that is easy on the eyes (and in the excellent New American Standard Bible translation) then this is the one for you. In fact, I plan to purchase another copy, as a backup. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Endless Subject Matter
I am amazed that the most sought after, fought after book in history has not been reviewed. Well it is an honor to be a trail blazer in writing the first amazon review on the Bible. First off I prefer the New King James Version of the bible because it preserves the old english language but makes it more understandable in todays vernacular. It is unfortunate that many have used Christianity for ill and have never even referred to the basic teachings of the Bible. The Bible speaks in figurative and literal language and for first time readers I would definitley recommend a Bible with commentary to explain the many issues the Bible addresses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Bible if accuracy doesn't matter
I loved this Bible with all it's helps, (see other reviews for list of helps) I thought it was about time that the words of G-d were written in red to give the same importance as Jesus' words.I really loved the cover because I didn't want my Bible to look like everyone elses (it has a large sword on it and instead of saying THE BIBLE it reads WORD OF G-D).The large print is fantastic and there is enough room in the margin to even put your notes.I also liked the fact that if there was a quote from another area of the Bible that it was boxed and told you where that quote came from so you didn't have to dig to find it.Here is the only problem literally that I have found with this Bible and that there is misprints and typos and even in one particular verse a word was added, and a few references had forgot either a set of numbers to look up the verse or which book it was insuch as Kings (1 or 2?) in one particular reference the verse was not there because the chapter was not there I had thought maybe transposed and searched many ways but could not find that particular reference. So you end up constantly checking with another Bible to see if what you are seeing is correct.I had contacted GEM publishing but had not rceived word back. IF accuracy doesn't matter this Bible is for You.Perhaps you will be more fortunate and the errors are corrected, if that is the case this really is a FANTASTIC BIBLE!!The question then is are you willing to spend the money without seeing it first to find out if they have corrected it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be Completely Redesigned
The Sword Study Bible King James Version has its good and bad points.Off the bat, I prefer the King James Easy Reading Version much better than this, but that is neither here nor there. This Bible has a lot of helps, and nice, large print.
