This is a fantastic book! Jon's Commentaries led my wife into very serious daily bible studies. Next to the Bible, these Application Commentaries are
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome God Given Blessing
I was a church pew baby - born in one and remained throughout much of my life.Nothing and no one has opened my eyes to the truths in the Word like Pastor Jon Courson has done in this commentary. He speaks truths in todays language meeting todays needs.I have bought this commentary for anyone who will take one (and even some who would'nt).I have watched lives transformed from fence walkers to true followers of Jesus through the diligent reading of this commentary. The scripture is in King James (my favorite) - and the commentary on it makes you not even realize you are reading King James. For me, it is less of a commentary that I would go to to look for understanding of specific verses - as it is a read through Bible. Many times I have read the Bible with little understanding. This commentary has opened my eyes, heart and soul through Jon's obvious God given gift used for HIS GLORY - to bring a greater awareness of GOD's Word to my life.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.I do not have alot of money - but when I find someone whom I can share this with - I find the money in the budget for another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I ever bought (except the Bible of course)
Definitely money well spent.I bought several extra copies for family members as well.Jon Courson is a very gifted teacher but the commentary is on a very easy to understand level for all readers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't jump to conclusions
Dr. Ehrman is a favorite of this reviewer and for that reason I hate to bring the rathing average down with my three stars. But, it cannot be avoided. The author's communication skills and flowing writing style are wonderful as in his other books. The content and the subject he covers are very good and at a good level of study for the layman. The service he has done in bringing out this study in popular form cannot be overemphasized and for that he is to be commended. However, I think his conclusions are based on his protestant experience which ignores the role that church tradition has played in the formation of the texts. This is unfortunate considering Dr. Ehrman's unquestioned encyclopedic knowledge of early church history. This book will make shakey ground for the evangelical Christian with dogmatic assumptions about scriptures. It will not put a dent in the armor of the Roman Catholic or Orthodox Christian however. Dr. Ehrman's non-antagonistic approach to the subject and his admirable attempt to remain objective while expressing the very findings that led to his own apostasy does him great credit as a scholar. For the research work background and as an introduction to this field of study, you will find this book quite helpful. But remember not to be jump too quickly to Dr. Ehrman's conclusions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Take on the Transmission of Biblical Text
I am writing this review at someone who has always been interested in knowing why we are here and what does it all mean. I read Bart Ehrman's other book on Truth and Fiction in the Da Vinci Code and found it to be very interesting. When I saw he also wrote a book on the problems in transmitting biblical text from the originals (which don't exist), I wanted to read it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Careful Work Of Scholarship
Don't buy this book expecting some major "bombshells" about how the Bible has been intentionally and substanially altered over the course of it's history. This book has nothing in common with the conspiracy theories of the "Da Vinci Code." Instead it is a cautious work by one of the world's foremost scholars in the field of textual criticism. Textual critics realize that we no longer have the original manuscripts on which the New Testament was based. So they study the earliest manuscripts available to determine what parts may have been changed before being collected as the canon of the New Testament.

    Editorial Review

In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and the man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran's prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's great religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work, pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would surely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." Free of dogma, free of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphorisms a 20th-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of other readers already have.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece to Mankind...
Inspirational and true teachings about various aspects of life are what you will find when you read this beautiful book. The book is short, 96 pages, and includes artwork by the author. The short chapters begin with various people (a ploughman, a judge, a woman, a rich man, an old priest, a mason, a hermit, etc.)asking the mystic to speak about different subjects of life, such as:On Beauty, On Good and Evil, On Marriage, On Joy and sorrow, on friendship, and many more)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Complete Old Testament Commentary Available
Keil & Delitzsch is a great help that I use quite often. Sometimes a little dry, and not the best book to read while you are sleepy, nevertheless K&D will give you a wealth of information as to what the original Hebrew says.I've found these volumes particularily usefulstudying the prophets. When there was a point of comparison in the Hebrewpoetry that I didn't understand, K&D came through for me with a clearexplanation. An even better OT Commentary is the one by Leupold. I findhis "Genesis" clearer and better written than Keil &Delitzsch. Unfortunately, Leupold did not write a commentary on the ENTIREOT, so K&D remains your best source for sound commentary on the wholeOld Testament.

5-0 out of 5 stars great commentary, dubious editing
Originally published in the late 19th century, the Keil and Delitzsch commentaries on the Old Testament are virtual monuments of rigorous scholarship. The authors have given us a work that is full of historical, linguistic, and archaeological information, a great majority of which isstill quite current. They perform very admirably, as well, in refuting therationalistic Biblical criticism of their day and in upholding the veracityof the Scriptures. A word of warning, however, is in order.HendricksonPublishers (who is responsible for this edition) has done aless-than-thorough job of editing the text.I have had my set for lessthan a year and have done in-depth study in only two of the volumes. However, both of these have been riddled with typographical errors.Thereare several punctuation mistakes, but the real problem lies in runningwords together (for instance, the phrase "it has been" appears as"ith as been," and so forth). These can be mildly annoying but,in the end, the sheer value and richness of the commentary overshadowsthese problems and should not deter the interested reader from takingadvantage of the tremendous learning of Messrs. Keil and Delitzsch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plowing in Fertile Soil
It's like plowing in fertile soil to peruse the volumes of Keil & Delitzsch. The authors examine the cultural aspects that background each OldTestament book, and squeeze the Hebrew and cognate languages toprovide the best possible interpretation.Nor are the authors myopic; forthey note within the text and within rich footnotes the conclusions ofothers --even those with whom they disagree. One does not always have toagree with an author's harvested conclusion in order to find benefit instudy. Sometimes just being in the sun and walking behind the plow is a"harvest" in itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is one that my daughter needed to have as a requirement for religion class, but one that she will keep for years to come. It is really well written, and on a teenage level, not as if someone "old" wrote it for them. There are many helpful items contained inside from peer pressure to religious beliefs that will benefit her throughout her teen years.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best period.
We compared this and the St. Mary's Press Catholic Youth Bible. This is simply more complete and thorough from a Catholic standpoint. The colorful and thematic pages really re-enforce positive and upbeat Catholic thinking and practice of the faith from a teen's perspective. The authors did an outstanding job of writing on a teen's level and choosing pertinent subjects to address. It is also the lowest cost Catholic Youth Bible on the market that we found. We highly recommend this Bible for Catholic youth and those who instruct them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best Study Bible
I really love my Max Lucado Inspirational NKJV Study Bible. It's a wonderful study bible with many sidebars of life lessons of Lucado's teaching guides. This the only one I use because it helps me to have a better understanding of the Scriptures. Each Book of the Old and New Testaments are laid out in an instruction manual style. All chapters are boldly titled to explain the situation for each one. The Life Lessons examines more closely the situation, makes observations, gives inspiration, makes application and gives further explorations of other scriptures throughout the Bible. It's chalkful of footnotes of many reliable references. Throughout this study gem are more inspirational ancedotes from Grace, Forgiveness, Suffering and Victory to God's Love, Hope, Prayer and Faith. And many more worthwhile inspirations that will bless your life. Even more, it has one hundred greatest thoughts, an index to selected readings, a dictionary with topical concordance, acknowledgments from many great references from the most notable names in Christianity. There's even a place in the back to add your own notes. I'm sure this is the only study bible you'll ever use. I find it to be the most comprehensive, enriching masterpiece of the Holy Bible yet. I would definitely give this as a nice gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Study Bible
I found this to be an excellent study tool. Max Lucado does not give a commentary on the verses. Instead he gives a life application lesson with the scriptures and a devotional thought. XCELLENT!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inspirational Study Bible, the very best ever
I love the Inspirational Study Bible, mine is NKJV. It has truly opened the word up to me as never before. I love reading and studying from it. It helps me understand a lot more of what was going on at the times the books were written. Mostly it helps me apply the Word to my own life. It has spoiled me, I have hunted several times for it in leather bound, I sure wish they would make it. I would get 1 for every member of my family. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars accurate - not always
The point when using any reference book is to expand on understanding and to get the true sense of the subject under study. This "Strongest" Strong's concordance falls short of this, as it apparently uses personal bias in its definitions (and comments), i.e. cross - 'stauros - cross, cross'. Research is for accurate knowledge. I was very disappointed.

I was fairly interested in this Bible but could not find any details on just what Pink, Hypercolor and Turleback was all about. Also that it came with a slipcover but showed this Bible in Blue, Green, and Pink.It would be helpful if an explanation of how it was different, other than in just color and how you could get something other than pink.

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth need it in their words
I'm a youth pastor in a small church in Rural Ontario Canada, I'm building up a youth group mostly out of un-churched kids from brocken homes. They need the bible in the language they can understand and relate to. One girl came to Christ this past week as she read from her families 40 pound family bible I translated using my message re-mix and she accepted Christ . one response as I read from her was "oh thats what that means?"
4-0 out of 5 stars response
In response to those who had nothing but nasty to say about this version of the Bible: Any Bible is better than no Bible at all. It's hard for those of us with no trouble reading to understand what it's like for anyone who has problems with it.Even the "easy to read" translations like the NIV or the NLT can be intimidating to people having trouble reading. The Message makes the meaning clear without being overly complicated to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revelation Unveiled
This excellent book gives us an orthodox Catholic insight into both the nature of the Mass and into the book of Revelation, or the Apocalypse. Using the Hebrew apocalyptic literary style that figures greatly into the Old Testament books of Daniel and Ezekiel, St John gives us an apocalyptic view of the end of an age, that of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and of the animal sacrifices of the ancient Hebrews. He does this by painting a panoramic picture of the demise of ancient Judaism and its successor, the early Christian Church.

Ok I pray the everyone who takes the time to attend Mass on Sunday would read this.I pray that those who don't attend Mass would read this.I wish that anyone that felt the were attending Mass just because it was an obligation, have a ho-hum attitude or felt bored at Mass would READ THIS BOOK! If you thought that the Book of Revelations was put there to scare you this book will change you life. Dr. Hahn has done it again he has really made the Bible and the Mass come to life.I no longer go to Mass just going through the punches. You know, walk in five minutes before Mass, holy water, a quick lowering of the knee, songs, readings,... and off to breakfast. Ok I really tried to get my head into Sunday worship but I just did not get it.Now I can't get enough. You can even see me at daily Mass I love it so much.I didn't get the why from my parents, I didn't get the why from society, and sadly I didn't get the why from the church.Dr. Hahn has helped me to understand why we should all love going to Mass. Growing up in Christianity I always knew that the teachings of Jesus Christ were more than just the stock answers that were given to questions asked.Paramahansa Yogananda, a God -realized soul, interprets the teachings of Jesus in a way that is understandable to the layperson and resonates with truth, as only one who has reached that oneness with God's consciousness could explain and as Jesus intended it to be.

This book is one of three work Yogananda produced during his life that can be truly concidered his "masterworks." The other two are "God Talks with Arjuna" his two volume commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, and "Autobiography of a Yogi" his autobiography. I can't add much to previous reviews except to say that if you're looking for a solid, detailed instruction on how to pray effectively, this may not be it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worst interpretation ever
I read this book years ago.My first impression was, "this seems like a lot to pull from such a small passage."I really felt that there was something wrong with it. A few months later, I read a textbook on Biblical Interpretation, and suddenly I could articulate what bothered me so much about this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars There needs to be a Zero star rating for books like this
I wonder what Bruce Wilkinson was thinking when he wrote this book. There is no way a top-notch theologian could squeeze 96 pages out of one verse and keep it focused solely on Scripture. Well, Wilkinson wrote that much, but he threw in so many examples from life that it totally took away the meaning of the verse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is a real Revelation
I have read some of Revelations. I could never bring myself to finish it. Unlike the Old Testament with its wonderfull stories of human trials and tribulations Revelations is page after page of hate and revenge. It never fit in with the rest of the Bible and it doesn't. This courages work brings to light the reasons why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts Through Evangelical Fundamentalist Garbage..
I happened to come across this tasty volume by accident and found myself up half the night sucked into its pages. The author covers all aspects of Revelations and does an exhaustive, yet entertaining critique of the stories aka metaphors contained therein. For End of the World Enthusiasts and Conspiracy Buffs, some of your paranoia will dissipate. For die hards, forget it.They'll believe what they want to believe. For Evangelicals and Fundamentalist Yahoos, you might just lose some steam. This book has something for everyone. It's an intelligent cultural study of a book in the Bible that's been bandied about for centuries. There will be no absolutes when you get to the end.But you will have learned what all the fuss is about.Sure to tick off more than a few know it all holier than thou folks for its bold candor.Maybe that's why I like it so much. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Commentary
As a Christian with slight Dispensational leanings, I found this commentary very helpful. This commentary is written by a collection of Dallas Theological Seminary professors. The writings are concise and plain, yet they cover a wealth of information. They delve into the difficult topics of today, such as authorship of the Pentateuch and literal versus allegorical prophetic interpretation. Each book's commentary begins with a study of the authorship, date, audience, theme and purpose. Then an outline of the book is given. Many charts are added to help give deeper understanding, and are not too difficult for the layperson nor too minimal for the theologian to benefit from. The format of the writing gives a summary title for a passage and then discusses it, rather than going verse-by-verse or splitting up the context. For a small-volume commentary set, this is a superb contribution.I am very glad to have added it to my library, and plan to continue using it throughout my studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for bible college educated
I purchased the electronic version of this book (saves space and money). It does not have the depth of a single bible bookcommentary and hence why my Life and Let of Paul II professor rejected me using this commentary as a credible source on my Romans exegetical paper.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible comentary!
This book is incredible! Having to have used it my self, i can honistly say that the information in here is very informative. It goes through all of the major aspects of each verse and chapter, and even throws in some of the smaller points that are very usful for study.

2-0 out of 5 stars over-rated and not worth the $
For much less than the price of this lexicon, one can purchase a copy of Thayer's, AND Trenchard's vocabulary guide AND a Greek concordance.Academic snobs make a big deal about how Thayer's lexicon is out of date because he did not have access to the papyri, but for 99% of New Testament words and meanings this is not an issue.Trenchard's book is actually MORE helpful, in my opinion, than this or any lexicon because he simply lists every possible meaning of each word. One way to get to the essence of a word's meaning is to look at the cognates, and Trenchard lists them all.A Greek concordance will actually print all the NT uses of a word in Greek.Bauer's lexicon is just not that helpful and is too wordy.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Greek-English Lexicon That Money Can Buy
This is the most comprehensive Lexicon of Koine Greek available. I like how for almost every word, the lexicon gives you an extensive list of how this word is used in not only the New Testament, but in some of the Christian literature of the post New Testament era.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for NT Greek
This by far is one of the best, if not thee best Greek NT lexicon available. Of course the 3rd edition adds to this monument of scholarly work. It is a bit time consuming to look for the words in Greek, but if God has put that hunger in your heart then press on. You will not be disappointed with the purchase. The other "Greek Lit." that is referenced is helpful, but if you want just NT references then buy the BAGD "Shorter Lexicon". Either way I pray that you continue in the path that the Lord has layed out before you. Seek the Lord with all your heart...lean not on your own understanding...He will make your paths straight...God Bless You. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Common-Sense Approach To Adversity
Rabbi Kushner's new book, "Overcoming Life's Disappointments" is a good friend to have if you've got some adversity in your life.He takes Moses, who spent 40 years wandering in the desert with his people and then was forbidden to enter the promised land with them, as his model on how a good person copes with trials. His advice is that life continues to have good things in store for us even after our dreams are shattered, if we don't let ourselves become hardened and embittered but keep our minds and hearts open. This sounds obvious enough, but it's easier said than done.Rabbi Kushner provides many stories from his long career to explain how we can cope.As a self-confessed admirer of Sigmund Freud, he's not big on the mystical or intuitive aspects of religion. He's more of a "duty is its own reward" kind of guy.But he is a preacher of what C.S. Lewis called "the Tao": the basic "way" that most religions have in common. If you are looking for essential answers, Rabbi Kushner is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rabbi Kushner gives a few pointers in resiliency
One of the hardest things for anyone to learn, no matter where you are in life, or how much money you have, is coping with times when things don't turn out as you expect. Some people never recover, while others seem to sail past a disaster with hardly a break in stride. The trick isn't in what the disaster is, but how they've handled it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Truth and Inspiration In The Meaning of the Words
The Bible, one of the most important books ever written, at least the New Testament, was written in the vulgate marketplace Greek which was often the common language in a multi-language Roman Empire. As Paul Ehrman showed in his book "Misquoting Jesus" as these books were translated and copied, the words sometimes too on different meaning. With this in mind, Wills instead focuses on trying to understand the meaning behind the words and actions of Jesus recorded in the Gospels and spoken of in his follower's letters. Rather than shying away from the more uncomfortable or seemingly misplaced passages Wills uses this as his starting off point. As he noted, in the 18th century Thomas Jefferson went about to edit his own version of the Gospels, filtering out what seemed incongruous, misplaced or was not representative of the "kind and gentle" Jesus or were not the part of a wise man's story, including the crucifixion.Today this is how we often want to view Jesus: ever kind, gentle, soft spoken, though we now love to focus on the crushing suffering of the crucifixion.
5-0 out of 5 stars The True Jesus
This book is awesome - a must read.It is in essence a rescue mission to free the true Jesus who has been kidnapped by established churches and politicians in our day.Reading this book is a liberating and affirming experience. As an American Christian who has felt socially and politically bludgeoned by "Christians" in our churches and political offices in the last decade, I read this book with tears in my eyes and joy in my heart for truth does, indeed, set us free. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to put his/her name on a ballot for office in this country - the message is a message for all mankind no matter what one's "religious affiliation."

4-0 out of 5 stars Intrigueing, ultimately flawed
Garry Wills is an excellent scholar and writer, with a wide range of interests. His book What Jesus Meant is a great read, and he makes a herculean effort to break out of the mold of much recent scholarship, particularly the Jesus Seminar. However in the end he succumbs to many of the same maladies he identifies in those he criticizes.
