5-0 out of 5 stars The Translation for Our Times........
Simply the best translation of the Tao Te Ching available. Stephen Mitchell has done us all a great service by bringing this ages old book of wisdom to the modern era.

1-0 out of 5 stars stephen mitchell presents the tao te ching
The tao te ching is a great book, I'm not giving that a one star review, I'm giving mitchell's interpretation of it one star.As many other reviews have stated, he doesn't speak chinese, so this translation is comprised of his reading other peoples' translations and what he thinks it means. He then tries to modernize it and make it accessible to 21st century americans.I like the old world feel of this book, you don't need to change swords to nuclear warheads, I know what a sword is.At least though, this change makes sense, some chapters Mitchell changes so much, that the entire chapter loses its meaning.A couple chapters made no sense, so I went to the back of the book where he tells what parts he changed, and then I was able to understand exactly what Lao Tzu intended to say.Don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on reviewers
It's funny, people are giving it 1/5 because it isn't a "literal translation." It has to be the exact translated words by someone who is "scholared" for it to be worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty of Tao
This beautiful book introduced me to Tao.As a child, my father would let me page through it just to look at the gorgeous and simple photography. It wasn't until many years later that I actually began to read and appreciate the Tao Te Ching for the writing and significance. This subtle philosophy can be difficult to comprehend, but reading the text and performing your own analysis before delving into interpretations is a good beginning.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent translation
One of the best, most readable interpretations of Tao Te Ching I have come across over the years. The supporting illustrations are bold yet do not take away from the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down - Best Interpretation
I've read over 20 interpretations of the Dao, and this is easily the clearest. The wording is very understandable for the Western mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tao of Leadership: Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching Adapted for a New Age
Nice little book to keep on hand for those trying times.Has lots of very relevant points - you just have to stop, think and put it in context for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Lead Without It
I've used this book for over 10 years as my leadership support tool.As General Manager of a $200MM business, I need perspective and support on a daily basis - and Heider's book provides it. I love that the persective is NOT a management flavor of the week, but a view on leadership that stands the test of time.1-0 out of 5 stars Great Source, Bad Translation
I have read several translations of the Tao Te Ching and was very disappointed in this read. I feel as if much of the strengths from the original text are lost in this author?s choice of words and examples. This translation loses the beauty and appreciation of nature that the original texts focused on. (He refers to calculators and computers in some instances) I was also bothered by his addition of the Christian understanding of God as a character in his translations.Over all I really recommend finding a better translation than this to read if you are a first timer. (such as translation by Victor H. Mair) It is a bit more of a heavy read but caries over the interesting paradoxes that make the ancient document so intriguing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Taichi players, meditators, chi healers, Tao seekers, et al ....
This book is probably the only one I've found that answers the real questions: "What is chi? Where did it come from? and, what can you do with it?"While the last section of the book illustrates some basic taichi exercises that anyone can do at home, the content would be valuable to those studying acupuncture, herbal medicine, meditation, or chi healing as well -- not just taichi students.Warning: This book looks and sounds deceptively simple, but inside are some pretty intense statements about the Tao, the nature of life and mind and the soul which aren't the usual stuff. It will definitely challenge you to expand your views on taichi and Taoism. Since I like that type of challenge, I give this five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Gift From a True Master
Having practiced t'ai chi for 25 years, I can say that Master Liao's book is among the most meaningful ever written on the subject of chi. This is a book that will open a true connection to your internal life force, and begin to help you develop that energy for the good of yourself, and the world. Read this book if you have any interest in developing your inner spiritual life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Way that can be spoken of is not the constant Way..."
TAO TE CHING is ascribed to Lao-Tzu ("The Old Boy"), an approximate contemporary of Confucius, who when asked to summarize his own philosophy, produced this incredible little volume before vanishing into the trackless wastes of central Asia. Long considered by Westerners to be the very essence of Oriental inscrutability, TAO TE CHING attempts to quantify the immeasurable and speak the ineffable. The Old Boy is far less opaque than he is accused of being; it is simply that human language is too limited to concretize the ideas of TAO TE CHING. Many people have attempted to describe the Tao (pronounced "Dow" or "Taw" depending on the local dialect). No one has yet succeeded. The mere act of description is a delimitation. Conceptually linked to flowing water or a candle flame, Tao is the natural order of things (but even that fails to suffice). The Tao, like Quantum Physics, must be grasped intuitively.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the possible alternatives to a religion.
Tao Te Ching is not only a philosophical outlook on life, it is also a religious philosophy. Written around 4th and 5th centuries BCE, Tao Te Ching gives us the glimpse of the ancient non-Western philosophy, with D.C. Lau's in-depth introduction, it is a very inspiring and eye-opening read. The translation captures the essence of the work and gives the reader the ability to truly appreciate it. One of the main topics of the Tao Te Ching is the idea of non-action. "One who knows does not speak; one who speaks does not know", it is kind of an intellectual trap trying to write this review with the Tao philosophy in mind. If you know then do not teach, if you are ruler then rule as less as possible, if you are warrior then do not fight, etc. These examples are all representatives of non-action attitudes presented in Tao Te Ching. The best way to appreciate this work is to stop reading this review and purchase the book and be amazed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Translation (uncertain about author's introduction though)
I'm not into Eastern philosophy to the point where I take visits to Buddhist temples and practice meditation on a daily basis. However, being a Westerner, I do believe Eastern philosophy is very interesting, intriguing, and very applicable to aspects of everyday life, especially in the life of us "hustle-n-bustle," constantly-on-the-go Westerners. A lot of Eastern philosophy just makes sense, as much as it is common sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is...
Having just turned forty I don't know if I'd call myself a sage yet, but this text offers thoughtful passages about later life as well as life in general. The author maintains a grounded taoist perspective and expresses it using examples and metaphors that will be familiar and relavant to the present day reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plan on rereading it at least once a year.
Being interested in Eastern religions and philosophies, I've read several translations of the Tao Te Ching, one of which is William Martin's (A Path and a Practice).I was so impressed by this book, that I wanted to read more of his writings.Having recently passed "mid-life," I was especially drawn to The Sage's Tao Te Ching.Mr. Martin's interpretation of this ancient work is sensitive, thought-provoking, and challenges popular cultural norms about aging and the meaning of "success."I recommend it to anyone -- regardless of age -- who is interested in cultivating the virtues of wisdom and compassion.I intend on reading it at least once a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Taoist Sage is an "OldBoy".
Lao Tzu, the "OldBoy", isn't called the master of paradox for nothing. This is a great book for the "OldBoy" in all of us. Though it is directed towards the older in years among us, it is applicable to anyone that has tired of the rat race of modern life and just wants to sit back and relax a while. Sit back and contemplate the mystery of life. Maybe even sit still long enough to hear the still small voice of our inner being. To be an old boy or girl again, only without the naivete of youth. As William Martin titles the first lesson of his beautiful little book, "Older or Wiser?"; and I quote:

4-0 out of 5 stars The Way is The Way
Even though the information seems a bit short. That is the Way.This little books sums it up most pleasantly. You get a chance to think on the pieces and the writer/translator does not insult your intelligence with mundane information. She allows the reader to make their own assessment.I do recommend this book as one for travel and pondering.A great way to empty your mind.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a translation at all....
If she had a genuine interest in translating the Tao Te Ching one would think that Ursula LeGuin would have learned Chinese and studied the Tao Te Ching in depth. She has done neither, and the "translation" shows this, making some very horrible distortions of the original text that are indeed well written, but have nothing to do with Taoism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Way of Being. Outstanding Book
Ursula K. Le Guin did a remarkable job in bringing us her translation of this magnificent book that will lift your heart, bring more understanding to your mind, free your ego from its grip on your life, and bring your soul peace from the ancient and extraordinary verses in this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful translation
I have always found the Tao Te Ching to be a very clear guide for life.I own a few different translations and this is the one that I always come back to.It is translated with a poetic style that highlights the simplicity of the way.Because you can plumb this work to any depth of understanding you want, anything more than the minimal bacground would be arbitrary.
5-0 out of 5 stars If I were stranded on a desert island...
This would be the only book I need to keep for the rest of my days here on earth. This book illustrates in the mind those tingling feelings I get when wading into a river.Instructions on how to live life...simple.The translation is much better than many I have read, less mechanic and utility, more art and poetry.Motivating, inspiring, insightful, and all encompassing, these chapters bring about a spiritual feeling and connection with the natural world and those around you. This book also contains advice for those in positions of power...W could learn a lesson here.Take this book wherever you go, never know where it will take you...

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple
After looking over several different translations of the Tao te Ching, I found that this translation was the easiest to understand. The words are not complicated to understand, just as Tao is not meant to complicate understanding of what it is.I would recommend this translation above all others as a first choice if you are new to the subject of Tao.After reading this one, I have a greater appreciation for other translations that approach Lao Tzu's words in a more poetic, or intellectual form. However, big words are not necessary to understand Tao.Simple words will do the trick, and that is what this translation by Feng and English offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book
This book is my bible and I learn and understand more of the wisdom within everytime I pick it up. I have already given copies to two of my dearest friends. I am now buying a third copy to give to another. I recommend it to everyone who is a practising counsellor or psychotherapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book
I highly recommend this book if you are interested in compassionate, client-centered approaches to psychotherapy, whether as a client or practitioner.A remarkable contribution to the art of psychotherapy as well as a soothing and uplifting read. An interest in eastern spirituality is not necessary to enjoy and appreciate this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all counselors in training
In using this book as an extra reading for a Counseling Strategies class, I found that the authors brought to life client-centered and gestalt philosophy and techniques. In addition, a number of students decided toseek counseling themselves to experience the process of unfolding andself-discovery.The best part of this book is the emphasis on the powerand courage of the individual client and on the catalyzing andcompassionate role of the therapist who guides the individual towardtrusting his or her own process as he or she moves toward greater wholenessand healing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Chinese Cat, a Ball of String
Here is the best commentary on the Tao Te Ching, along with an excellent translation. Of all the translators, Ellen M. Chen is the finest Tao Te Ching teacher! Why? Because she has the most complete understanding of those deep, deep Chinese sensibilities that are alive and at work in the ancient Chinese characters. As an experienced teacher, a master teacher, she also knows how to lead the student into the heart of the meaning of the Tao Te Ching, carefully linking each chapter to the next, and often jumping forward or back to connect expressions that repeat in different contexts. However, there is nothing overly academic or dry here. Chen's delight in the text, and her joy in unravelling it, are so evident that we are encouraged to join in, becoming mystery-seekers ourselves, like a Chinese cat with a ball of string...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of The Best
In our humble opinion, this work should be seen as superior to all other translations and interpretations of the Tao Te Ching; and I have read and studied over 20 of these while developing a synthesis for a multimedia CD. This text contains a very broad and deep foreword. The verse translations and commentaries are both very authentic and yet poetically spiritual. It further contains a bibliography, a glossary of Chinese terms and an index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arriving as Guests to a Banquet.
Although I must have collected upwards of twenty different editions of the Tao Te Ching over the years, Ellen M. Chen's has always stood at the top of my list,... it's a shame this truly wonderful edition isn't better known.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fauvist Watercolor Wash

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners and Advanced
If you are a painter trying to produce realistic paintings, this book isn't for you. Lots of people think that realism is the highest ideal, but if you are searching for a way to paint more impressionistically without resorting to flinging paint, this book IS for you. I am an art teacher and I find it very hard to help students realize that our world doesn't contain LINES, only shapes. It is also hard for students--and for me--to make fresh, lively paintings when we are trying for photorealism. By using the washes, controlling the edges, trying the layered washes, working from suggested shapes created by beginning washes rather than always beginning with realistic shapes, I get fresher work and the students make better work. It is true that we all can benefit from trying for accuracy in drawing, but when working with watercolor, why not go with the strengths of the medium and try Carbonetti's approach.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This book is wonderful to look through and has a mystical feeling to it but the actual instructions for the paintings are very poor.I tried some of the demonstrations and even though I liked the end result, the instructions are vague. I would not recomend this book to beginners but rather to people who want to loosen up their paintings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cornerstone of Sorts
The three way comparison format (english translation, cultural translation, and reasoning for translation based on historical and linguistic fact) and the dry, reserved language give this book the cut to access unique tumblers in the most difficult of locks.LeFargue and his students (he mentions them adding their understanding) paint meaning and understanding like a watercolor, with each layer's contribution plainly visible, rather than the masking qualities of psuedo-scientists' day-glo acrylic or the holistic turtles' enamel pastels.Triangulating one's own understanding from a single source is an unusual treat. For a rational and restrained mind the fit is magic and the bolt of suspicion is thrown back (or a rough slide for some). All the same its the only book in its genre I've been able to wholly admire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful text or Rorschach test?
Michael LaFargue says the Tao Te Ching is the former even though it's often treated as the latter.5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring contextualisation and translation: perfect.
As an anthropologist, constantly confronted with hermeneutics and the interpretation of culturally unknown texts and social situations and as a former student of chinese language and philosophie I can only stronglyrecommend this book. It is -by far- the best translation and interpretationI have ever read. Crucial to the the understanding of teh tao te qing is agood and profound explanation of the historical and social setting of thework and its probable authors. Lafargue has achieved this wonderfully.Strongly recommended... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a reader
I received this wonderful book at my baby shower. My son is 3 and a half now and I credit the passages in the book with totally helping me be a much better parent than I ever could have been without it.I highly recommend anyone who might need some uninvasive advice and direction in the parenting department to get this book.It has been on my bedside table for years and whenever I need to I pick it up, read a page and feel much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars not the tao te ching
This may be a fine book for parenting/motherhood, but it is not Lao Tzu's tao te ching. His classic text has broad applications to many areas of life, but the stretch to motherhood is too great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vimala reminds us of the spirituality in parenting
This beautifully written book has been a comfort to me during the trying times of parenting a young child. Her words are gentle and touch the inner core of who I am trying to be as a good parent. I have found strength when I was at my lowest and yet she reminds me that we are in this world but not of this world. With her guidance I have been able to put aside the demands and comparisons society places on me as a parent and to focus on what truly matters.I have given this book to my friends and I plan on passing it on to others that are looking for a spiritual connection to their children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous poetry regardless of your faith
If every philosophy or religion had a book like this, it would be much easier to appreciate and perhaps even enjoy the diversity of belief among humankind. Mitchell captures the simplicity and straightforwardness of the text, and what we get is a incredibly beautiful book of verse. Some scriptures and cornerstone philosophy texts try to argue their way into your head; the Tao, especially as translated by Mitchell and coupled with stunning artwork, effortlessly works to seduce its way into the core of your being.
4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the Prettiest Tao Te Ching
I have come to have a fondness and deep appreciation for Mitchell's work and choices of subjects. I bought this translation because of high praise for it hidden in one of Jim Harrison's poems. This version is, perhaps, the most readable of all I have encountered. Many people find it inspiring and that must be why it is such an acclaimed translation.Having dealt with a dozen or so translations and the texts behind them, I do note that Mitchell takes some liberties. His is a very idiomatic translation, which often reads better than word-for-word literalness, the latter often proving too wooden to be enjoyable or clear. And Mitchell might even omit a few phrases or add one here or there. But the spirit is all Lao Tzu. Also, the volume is full of the most exquisite ancient Chinese illustrations, making it the most beautiful of any of my Tao Te Chings.

5-0 out of 5 stars As VisuallyBeautiful a Journey as Spiritual
Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way)has long been referenced by those who seek to understand the Eastern philosophy of the harmony of the universe. In simple, eloquent verse this collection of poems (though there are those who would object to the 'poem' label) the secrets to shedding the self with its attendant judgment, desire, and critique provide the guide for finding oneness with the cosmos.

Addiss & Lombardo do a fantastic job with this text.They start with four goals, explained in detail, and do their best to work from there to create one of the most enjoyable Tao Te Ching reads there is.Here's a very brief list of the goals;

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic
Whereas some Tao Te Chings available in English are translations of translations, Derek Lin returned to the source, to the most authentic commentaries, to produce a translation and interpretation that can be trusted. He explains his methods and the difficulties he encountered, allowing the reader to make up his or her own mind about what follows. While I believe it is good to have more than one translation of the Tao Te Ching, I can say I believe this translation has a place of prominence in any collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best translations
In my opinion, this is one of the best translations of the Tao Te Ching. Derek Lin's explanations of the chapters are very clear and applicable to everyday life. The most helpful feature of this publication is having the explanations/commentaries right next to the book's chapters (on the facing pages)...easy access...instead of at the very back of the book (as end notes) which disrupts the even flow of the reading. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for Metaphysical Studies collections
Ably translated into English by Derek Lin (Tao Te Ching expert and Director of Tao Studies at the Great Tao Foundation of America), "Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained" introduces students of the Tao as to how they can integrate the Tao Te Ching into their daily lives. The format is one of an unobtrusive facing-page commentary highlighting the simplicity, balance, and learning from life's paradoxical truths. Readers will learn how to employ the Tao Te Ching approach to realizing their personal and professional goals. Reputedly the creation of Lao Tzu some 2500 years ago, this ancient Chinese body of teachings that comprises the "Tao Te Ching: Annotated & Explained" is now thoroughly accessible to students and non-specialist general reader alike who have an interest in the Tao. Highly recommended for Metaphysical Studies collections in general, and students of the Tao in particular. ... Read more

Beautifully done -- Star's verbatim translations for the individual characters add real depth to this commentary on the evolved verses that have become the Tao Te Ching.

4-0 out of 5 stars almost definitive, yes
Indeed this is a very nice edition of a very nice book. It helps the many of us who, bewildered by the differences between translations, try to find the real one. And it helps close the language gap.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical spiritual journey
The Tao te Ching can be poetic or you can be challenged by William Martin to actually live a spiritual life. How does each of us learn to be compassionate, live only in today, allow life to unfold as it will anyway? These are the challenges of this book with a question for each chapter of the Tao in the back.Written to challenge any spiritual individual to live their belief, not just declare it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Written By a Gentle, And Wise Man
I've met very few authors who's writing made me want to actually go to meet them, but after reading William Martin's 'A Path and a Practice', I've decided that I'd really love to sit down and speak my heart to Mr. Martin.
