5-0 out of 5 stars True zen!
As a "recovering alcoholic", I have had MUCH trouble within and without the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous when people find out that I am a Buddhist skeptic who does not believe in the idea of a deity called "god".As a practicioner of Zen, I am pleased to see that Mr. Ash has a solid grip of the "Zen of recovery".
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book
As a person with an addictive nature I cannot speak highly enough about this book - it is lovely! I want to buy copies for everyone I know - whether they are in recovery or not. As for the review saying, "any zen book can give you principles to quit drinking..."I don't think the purpose of this book was to stop ppl from drinking, but rather: to accompany ppl who may already struggle w/ a higher power w/in the twelve steps. I suspect that most ppl reconnect with themselves AFTER moving into the program and encounter obstacles along the way. For me, this book acts as a liason between the twelve steps and my internal obstacles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent & Insightful
Mel Ash, using Zen as the spiritual component, adapts the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and zens it up. It's easy to swallow for me because the emphasis is not singularly recovery from alcoholism but also eating disorders, narcotic addiction, etc. The reading is gentle and doesn't underestimate or devalue the audience with sterile language. It gets awfully real world and how we can intermingle our recovery into our lives, which is what I wanted when I entered into recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expanded version with authoritative interpretations.Important!
The Tibetan Book of the Dead edited by Graham Coleman, Thupten Jinpa, translated by Gyurme Dorje (Viking) is by far the most popular example of indigenous Tibetan Buddhist treasure literature. An edition was issued in 1927 by Oxford University Press under the general editorship of W. Y. Evans-Wentz.The block-print copy, he used was an abridgment obtained in Nepal and translated by a Tibetan lama.Evans-Wentz was a scholarly Theosophist who imported certain Theosophical preconceptions into his commentary on the work.Carl Jung the prominent analytical psychologist even wrote a psychological commentary on the work prompted by Evans-Wentz.Since the 1970s, beginning with Francesca Fremantle and Chogyam Trungpa's edition of the text and more recently Robert Thurman's translation, corrected versions of the Tibetan Book of the Dead are well represented in English and other European languages. The mistakes and egregious errors of the pioneering edition have been corrected and Tibetan Buddhism now in America and Europe has been flourishing with many translations and commentaries on basic Buddhist practices as well as the indigenous literatures of Tibet.

Believe it or not, this is a book you might not want to put down --they don't come much better than this. It's a very engaging combination of scholarly inquiry and Mr. Seager's personal experience as he traveled to several countries and interviewed SG members at every level, including Daisaku Ikeda.Satisfying, moving, and highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Strong discussion about Modern Buddhism done in scholarly style. Very good independent view of the SGI.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely personal...but not exactly objective...
I enjoyed the book...it offers lots of information that many Gakkai members may not have known previously..there is no pretense of objectivity...While it is a fine in-house publication (having been financed by the Soka Gakkai)it may not qualify as scholarship...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wordless Teaching
Although I never considered myself a student of Zen Buddhism until I read this book along with Red Pine's Zen Teachings of Bodhidharma, I do now. Having been a student of Advaita Vedanta for years, I have crossed over. Originally I was drawn to Huang Po because of studying the Dr. David Hawkins's books who I highly respect. On the Map of Consciousness he devised, he calibrated Huang Po in the 900's which is extremely high on a scale ranging from 1-1000. Only the World Teachers like Buddha, Christ, Krishna, Zoroaster etc. calibrated higher. Although Zen has much in common with the nondualistic teachings of Advaita, the Teachings are, well, Zen! I can not begin to recommend this book highly enough for students ready to pierce the unadulterated Truth beyond words that comes with the tacit Understanding of One Mind or Universal Mind. Lying beyond the concepts of intellect, the wordless Transmission of Mind to Mind comes through the text of this book and teachings. Make no mistake, these are the highest teachings that have the Grace and Power to take the student beyond him/herself into Self or that Primordial Awareness of One Mind. Truly a Dharma Jewel in its undivided Shining Brillance. I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars nothing to teach but the One Mind
If you want Chan (Zen) teachings, this book is what you need.I read it several times, then supplemented it with Bodhidharma's teachings as one reviewer suggested. However, upon reading Red Pine's Zen Teachings of Bodhidharma I immediately returned it and bought another copy of Huang Po as a backup.I did not have a problem with Bodhidharma's teachings as much as I simply felt that Huang Po explained the One Mind in a way that resonated clearer with me.Both Bodhidharma and Huang Po taught naught but the One Mind, so neither will lead you astray.I gave away all of my other Zen books when I read Huang Po.Reading a dozen Zen books will not bring me any closer to "attaining" enlightenment, just as boiling the ocean is not necessary in order to make a cup of tea.My only complaint is that this book is not available in hardcover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Notes for Life on this Planet
There are probably only 4 or 5 books on this planet worth reading. This is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Meditations, Enhances Meditation Practice
One of my meditation leaders recommends this book and uses similar meditations in small groups. The book goes into more detail than the small group has time to do.But, I found the meditations easy to read and comprehend. This book has extended my meditation practice with both breadth and depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Supreme Guide to Meditation and Contentment
This is one of the most concise books I've ever read on meditation and Buddhism's method for leading a virtuous and happy life. This is the one book that brought together everything that I had previously read in other books on Buddhism and meditation. With so many approaches to meditation, it's a relief to find an experienced practitioner who eloquently maps out the elements of Buddhist meditation in relationship to the balanced development of both wisdom and compassion. In particular, I found it very helpful the way the author divides the practice of 'samatha' or tranquility meditation and 'vipassana' techniques or insight meditation. The explanation of the Four Immeasurables (kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity) and how they balance our practice that's useful to others as well as ourselves was also invaluable. The writing is condensed and to the point with many jewels of wisdom. I found myself underlining almost every other sentence. If you're looking for a clear outline for meditation practice and how to apply it to your daily practice on an off the meditation cushion, this is a great book to read, study, and put into practice. ... The book of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche gives a full account of Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Feat
The two volumes are both extremely useful for anyone seriously interested in Buddhist philosophy in general and Tibetan Buddhism in particular.Dudjom Rinpoche gives a thorough, encyclopedic overview of all Buddhistschools, seen from the Nyingma (i.e. The Great Perfection, or Dzogchen)perspective, and an account of the history of the Nyingma lineage is given. The reference volume contains amongst other items a brilliant bibliography.Dudjom Rinpoche's work is not easy reading, but demonstrates the complexityof Buddhist thinking and practice. 4-0 out of 5 stars Start with chapter one!
This book is pretty much as the Booklist review describes. It is worth noting that the book begins with lengthy forwards and prefaces which I found wordy, ponderous, and a bit moralistic. I began to fear the book would be the same. Not so! when you finally get to chapter one, the pace picks up and the tone and diction become lighter and much friendlier to a high-school level of reader. Far from being moralistic, the author deals with a variety of real issues that young people have to face, and does it in a frank, sensible, easygoing and very constructive fashion. The book should be a help and a comfort to many in its target audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great book!
I have been learning about Buddhism for a couple of years now and bought this book for my teenage daughter, in hopes that it would inspire her to join me. She hasn't read it yet, but I decided to pick it up off her shelf one day and read it myself. This book changed my life. It is written in very simple, easy to understand terms. I felt like Diana Winston was a good friend, walking the path with me and explaining things along the way. I loved it. And I am still hoping my daughter will join me!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book worked miracles for our 15 years old teenager
Our son was in very hard times, struggling to come to terms with the low values (if values) of modern society, modern music and his own background and values. With 14 he went into extrem aggression and anger. He sought refuge in hard rap, which on one side helped to work anger off, but fueled it from another side. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: A Handbook of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols
the book was very well put together and has alot of useful info on buddhist art.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptionally fine book
This volume took Robert Beer more than 10 years to complete, and one understands why. As far as I know it is the only book on the subject with such superbly crafted illustrations, each meticulously drawn in pencil-thin, lucid detail. There are a huge number of these drawings, and the well-structured text is informative, thorough and scholarly, without being dry. It is an eminent work of very high quality and a joy to read for any Buddhist practitioner, art lover, or just for curiosity. It is surely a classic reference volume. Modesty must have compelled the author and editors to give it the diminutive title 'a handbook' - it is indeed much more. Read it an enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially informative for connoisseurs of Tibetan art
The Handbook Of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols by Robert Beer (who has studied and practice Tibetan thanga painting for more than thirty years) is a straightforward reference guide to the meaningful symbolism of sacred Tibetan art. Black-and-white illustrations depict all the major Buddhist symbols and motifs, while the text offers depth and interpretation behind the meaning and usage of each. The Handbook Of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols is enthusiastically recommended for inclusion into Buddhist Studies and especially informative for connoisseurs of Tibetan art. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Third Eye
A great tale, no doubt based on Rampas' studies of the ancient Tibetan world. I have little doubt that what is written is true but his subsequent writings exposed the myth. However, this the first book is credible and enjoyable. Do they really have a third eye?

3-0 out of 5 stars Both interesting and distorting
Lama Cyril Hoskins does not sound as good as Lobsang Rampa, isn't it? That's what was his real name. Having travelled to and studied on Tibet for two decades now, I had always refused to read this book since I knew it distorted the image of Tibet unlike any other book "about" Tibet. Now I finally found myself reading "The Third Eye", and since I can easily distinguish what is fiction and what is the rendering of given knowledge in the West at the time of its being written, I found it quite entertaining and amusing. I was even somehow surprised about the author's insight into (part of) the Tibetan culture: this author, a British who had never been evennear to Tibet, had an idea of Tibet - similar to German Karl May's description of the north American Indian world - which sometimes is closer to the reality than what many Westerners nowadays believe was or is Tibet! He is, however, partially responsible for wrong images of Tibet. So my advice is: read it as fiction, but don't take it too serious, especially in those parts which tend to fascinate us Westerners! Then you may enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars short hand
At first glance and at first reading, the book would seem to be a laundry list of mental functions and how they are considered in Buddhism. However, if the items are taken slowly and related to other things that one has come across in the study of Buddhist philosophy, then they are fine points to ponder and they expand one's knowledge.Definitely not a book you read like a novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full Grace!
Spugeon once again goes into detail here about the grace of God andexplains that it works obediance in the life of the believer. I loved most of all his writing on faith as the fountain of salvation and not the basis. Eph 2:8-10. God's grace is the source.....not self-generated faith, for there is no faith apart from God. Faith is simply trusting God and his Word. Trust Him to give you what He deems best, not what you think is best (they are not always the same). The "faith in faith" crowd should read this book. Just trust God, and don't use faith for a list of personal entitlements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold -- Of Greater Worth Than A World of Lesser Books
Words cannot do justice to this short, but powerful work of Charles Spurgeon. It is, without a doubt, one of the single greatest non-canonical books ever written.Herein Spurgeon sets forth in no indefinite terms the way of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.Spurgeon's deep-felt love for his Savior and for his fellow sinners shines forth on every page, in every phrase of this phenomenal volume. He brings the gospel to his readers with pointed illustrations, well-placed anecdotes, irrefutable arguments, heart-felt pleas and (above all else) the plainly-spoken and rightly-applied word of God.
5-0 out of 5 stars Salvation is All of Grace
While I have often been disappointed with some of the Whitaker books of Charles Spurgeon for the editing, I greatly enjoyed this edition published by Moody Press. The book is indeed the actual sermons that Charles Spurgeon preached on the grace of God for our eternal salvation.

This series of apparently sequential lectures provides an overview of Vajrayana (Madhyamika, 5 Buddha families, gods & demons), experiential descriptions of important processes (initiation, student-guru relationship, & ego development), comparisons of Prajna knowledge & jnana wisdom, a short bio, Q&A, an index, & esp. the problem of spiritual materialism (rationalization & intellectualization of spirituality)--desperately needed among modern spiritual seekers.Indeed, seeking spirituality is (according to the 11th Trungpa Tulku, Pema Chodron's lama) self-defeating.As a crazy wisdom master, he pulls no punches in practicing p. 214: `ruthless compassion' (tough love), directly attacking ego defenses with discriminating awareness knowledge/wisdom, & humor. His approach parallels Christ Zois' "Think Like a Shrink," Eric Berne's "Games People Play," & Robert Johnson's "We."Regarding "the hard way," he says, p. 101: perhaps this will put off a lot of people."This is esp. true since he uses traditional Tibetan negative reinforcement. His approach is highly psychological--p. 108: "Projection is the mirror reflection of yourself.Because you are uncertain about yourself, the world reflects that uncertainty back to you & the reflection begins to haunt you.Your uncertainty is haunting you, but it is merely your reflection in the mirror, p. 232: "The whole idea is that these yidams must not be regarded as external gods who will save you, but they are expressions of your true nature, & p. 241: "It is with our emotions that we create demons & gods: those things which we don't want in our lives & world are the demons; those things which we would draw to us are the gods & goddesses. The rest is just scenery."But, there are differences from Western psychology too, supporting Freud's regressive view of Eastern methods & infant ego development. But, Trungpa's epistemology is more empirical than traditional--p. 17: "If we regard knowledge as an antique, as "ancient wisdom" to be collected then we are on the wrong path."Unfortunately, questioners didn't ask him (a Kagyu lama versed in Mahamudra) to relate Mahamudra to Madhyamaka--the one topic with which I disagree with his (traditional) presentation--as several authors (Tsele Natsok Rangdrol in "Empowerment," Anne Klein in Newland's "Changing Minds," & Klein & Tenzin Wangyal in "Unbounded Wholeness") find Madhyamaka incompatible with Mahamudra/Dzogchen.The East can also benefit from applying discriminating knowledge/wisdom.This book is a great start in that direction in the West; though most of it is elementary to mid-level, it's teachings on spiritual materialism are timely & of inestimable value today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic for Westerners
This amazing monk came out of Tibet as part of its life-saving diaspora. Now that Tibet, as a fixed geographical place, is disappearing from earth, Chogyam Trungpa's work, and that of other Tibetan monk-teachers, continues spreading the wealth of wisdom contained in Tibetan Buddhism thus assuring it will not be lost to the world.
2-0 out of 5 stars The title is all you need
The title of this book is the best part - just the notion of it is enough: a brilliant and almost unheard-of concept.

Editorial Review

Take a trip through the topography of the brain, and you're likely to get lost somewhere around the medulla oblongata. Zen can lose you before you've even pretzeled your legs into the lotus position. But a unique neurologist-Zen Buddhist has written a tome that is a map to all the mysteries of meditation and mind. Take breathing out, for example. We spend just over half of our breathing time exhaling. For meditating monks, it's a full three-quarters. EEGs show us that the act of exhaling helps physically quiet the brain. Many other causal connections can be found between Zen practices and the physiology of the brain, and James H. Austin lays them out one by one, drawing from his own Zen experiences and the latest in neurological research. So if you've ever wondered what the corpus callosum has to do with consciousness or how the limbic system contributes to enlightenment, Austin will get your brain racing and put your mind at ease. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Understanding of ZEN
ZEN & THE BRAIN is an excellent book about the mechanisms and affects of the Brain before, during,&after the process of ZEN meditation. It includes a brief history of Zen & what Japanese Koans are & how they should be approached. If You are a beginner it is a fascinating exploration,if you are intermediate or advanced, his book will furthur motivate you to higher levels of ZEN.Doctor James H.Austin writes surprisingly humbly about his lessons of Zen.This is a MUST READ & PURCHASE book,ZEN AND THE MIND BY JAMES H.AUSTIN.

1-0 out of 5 stars where is the brain center for compassion?
so he spent his sabbaticals doing things to cat brains?
5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking book of paradox
This very detailed and voluminous book delves into two subjects, which at times appear very different and not easily connected. On the one hand, the author provides an excellent description of his experience with Zen Buddhism. He describes how Zen is a very rigorous practice and recounts his own progress. Perhaps the strongest aspect of the book is the careful use of terms. Concepts such as "emptiness" and "suchness" are explained in detail. There is an interpretation of the Freudian concepts of ego and id, and a distinction made between the egocentric "I" and the pragmatic "I". The egocentric "I" is further defined as "I-Me-Mine" - different aspects of the selfish and limiting ego, driven by cravings.

5-0 out of 5 stars SW review
The CDs by Bodhipaksa are all good, his voice and manner are the most soothing I've found-and I've listened to lots of relaxation and meditation CDs.The Guided Meditations for Busy People CD is particularly useful, providing a way to create a quick mindfulness exercise when you haven't got a lot of time and may otherwise just skip it.It has encouraged me to stop for a moment during the day to restore calmness and peace and then get on with my busy schedule.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I thought ...
I was very disappointed with this CD.The voice on the CD is distracting and I had a hard time understanding what was being said. The quality of sound on the CD was very poor.I had originally been very excited about this CD hoping that it would be relaxing and allow me to incorporate meditation into my workday like while on lunch or before my drive home ... but the words sound mumbled and after trying to listen to the CD several times, I gave up.I own several meditation CDs (some are spectacular and some are just ok) but this is the only one that I refuse to listen to again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing
