5-0 out of 5 stars This Buddha-muse shows up all over Honolulu...
in and out of the recesses and corners from Long Drugs to temples in the valleys, in the hands of a Bamboo Ridge poet tender, surreal, and caustically cautionary by turns and twists of language and modest feats of imagination and compassion.A welcome addition to the Dharma Bum quests as these visionary longings hit the waters and contexts of Bamboo Ridge and Asia/Pacific in the hands of a Kuan Yin devotee and splendid scholar-poet of Hawai'i and the everyday world.A world where, like Benjamin, the poet is "a theologian marooned in the realms of the profane" and a shopping mall reality. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Being a Buddhist in 18th century Sri Lanka
As the second in a line of four regents of the South India derived Nayakkar dynasty that succeeded the last of the ethnically Sinhalese kings in 1739, Kirti Sri (1747-1781)'s linguistic heritage was Tamil and hisgiven religious tradition was Hindu Saivism. The last of the ethnicallySinhalese rulers of the Kandyan kingdom Narendra Sinha (1707-1739) had diedwithout a legitimate heir to the throne. His chief queen was a princessfrom Madurai , a practice that had been inaugurated during the 11th through13th centuries in the Polonnaruwa period. The first of the Nayakkar kings, crowned Sri Vijaya Rajasinha in 1739 was the brother in law ofNarendrasinha.Kirti Sri, the object of this book, was the brother ofSriVijaya Rajasingha's chief queen, also a Madurai princess. He was only 16when he was selected and for 4 years the affairs of the kingdom werehandled by his regent father. Holt's stated aim in writing this book is tooffer an 'interdisciplinary examination of what is meant for variouspeople, lay and monastic, to be Buddhists during the advent of Europeancolonialism and before what has become known as a modern Buddhist religiousperspective, qualified by some as 'protestant Buddhism'. To say thingssimply Holt asks the following question: what was it to be a Buddhistbefore Olcott and Dharmapala? This slim book of 147 pages is neatlyorganised into 5 tightly written chapters. Chapter 1 provides the necessarybackground for a reader unfamiliar with Sri Lankan history and goes on toexplain why KS was so concerned about articulating his religious identityasa Buddhist Chapters 2 to 4 which form the heart of the book explain howKS articulated his understanding of Buddhist religious thought and identitythrough the expression of his religious works especially the temple wallpaintings that have become such a remarkable icon and legacy of his reign. InChapter 3.entitled A Visual Liturgy. Holt argues thatKS's effortsdirected at the performance of rituals gave form or rather reformed thepublic articulation of Buddhism. Through an identification and analysis ofthe religious meanings symbolised in the pictorial art that KS had paintedby his highly skilled crafstmen on the walls of many temples he restored,Holt aims at ferreting out the principles and substances of this classicsinhala weltanschauung or world view. For this he looks in detail attemple wall paintings and this is in my view the most interesting sectionof the book Chapter 4deals with one other element of the liturgy which isthe jataka paintings. The Jatakas relate the anterior life of the Buddha asa Boddhisatta before his final birth as Gotama Siddharta. This chapter thatrelateswhat Holt considers were the 4 most importantjataka stories ishelpful to a reader who wishes to interpret the murals by himself. Chapter5 is concerned with the necessity for students of religion to focus onmaterials other than literary texts.OnChapter 6 that attempts to relate KS predicament in the 18thc to the current ethnic conflictI shallnot comment except to say that it adds little to the book.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor writing
The writing is at a 4th grade level and the analysis is lacking in any depth or integrity.I'm surprised that such a flimsy book would make it into print.Don't buy this but invest in Malalgoda or Obeysekere. At least these authors give the impression they know what's going on. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better translations of this essential work are available
Carus was an interesting figure in Anglo-American philosophy and we owe him much. He was a friend to and publisher of the great Charles Peirce, when he was universally condemned and shunted by the academic community, and a champion of many other philosophies, which were most definitely not mainstream in 19th century America, through his Open Court Press. He promoted Eastern philosophies which were a novelty at the time (circa 1890s)and translated Buddhist and Taoist texts.5-0 out of 5 stars The Simplest place for Christians to start with Buddhism....
Although this is a really old and linguistically dated, for a variety of reasons this is the simplest place for a person familiar with the Gospels to begin an inquiry into the life of the Buddha (as opposed to Buddhism as a religion generally-- which is much to broad for this book to cover in its just over three hundred pages....) For a book that is almost one hundred years old, its author did a remarkable job of summarizing the sutras that detail the life of the Buddha and in providing charts, etc. such that Christians would grasp that yes, this man was teaching many of the same things as was the man who taught in their Bible.....5-0 out of 5 stars This version of Gospel of Buddha lacks illustrations.
This is a nice book for Christians who wish to grasp the message and principle beliefs of Buddhism. Carus presents the Buddha's life in a collection of stories from his birth, attainment of enlightenment, teaching, to his death. Well written, it emulates the biblical style of the King Jame's Bible, occasionally puncuated with Ye, Thou, Thy, and so on. The stories are enjoyable but short and somewhat numerous. Also included is a glossary of terms and a concordance with passages in the New Testament. This edition has been reset and lacks the original intricate illustrations by Olga Kopetzky. The pages of the book were also stragely scented.I bought this to have a hardcover version but prefer the Open Court copy made from the original plates. ...
