5-0 out of 5 stars Life's Instruction Manual
People say life doen't come with an instruction manual, well this is it. Why you are here; what is important; how to deal with departure (death), your own and others; what happens if you spend your life sidetracked by the 'immediate but not important' issues. Written in a way that compels you to move to action, beyond simple intellectual curiousity. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

Reading the currently posted 75 reviews of Sogyal Rinpoche's "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" is an education in itself. Devotion, gratitude, and open-minded reading in the majority of the reviews are juxtaposed with ignorance, mis-information, and a desire to make points in other reviews. Thus is our human condition. There is a Tibetan saying, "When luck comes to the mouth, the tongue pushes it out." Let us see "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" for what it is: pure good fortune.

Pema Chodron has a wonderful kind voice. Her teaching on these CD is a gentle introduction to Buddhism for the lay person.I found great solace in her words and her voice.Like the Dalai Lama and Thubten Chodron, Pema Chodron's laughter is an expression of pure joy.The genuine joy that I hear in their laughters is proof that Buddhism will help me, and indeed it has helped me.

In a modern society characterized by insensitivity to violence, ambivalence to the suffering of others, and a high-octane profit motive, is talk of ethics anything more than a temporary salve for our collective conscience? The Dalai Lama thinks so. In his Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Said the Buddhist to the hot dog vendor, "Make me one with everything!"
Very few religious leaders speak deeply about ethics in a manner that allows people to think deeply as a result. Too many religious leaders are authoritarian in their edicts about morality or lax because gaining converts and their money is foremost on their minds. (Yeah, I'm a little cynical.)
5-0 out of 5 stars He knows what he's talking about...take notes and learn
The Dalai Lama considers the state of the world in relation to ethics with a fine-toothed comb. (I am currently borrowing "Ethics for the New Millennium" as an abridged audiobook from my local library. This is a tape I will repeatly listen to until its due date...)The Dalai Lama is such a sweetheart! I love how he perceives the world, suggests solutions and alternatives to global and ethical dilemnas, and remains optimistic about the future. He believes that we are a people who want to be happy while avoiding suffering. He acknowleges that we do have a dark side that we must keep in check and subdue; but to counter this dark side, the Dalai Lama believes that people are mostly gentle by nature and can return to that natural state with discipline and guidance. We deviate from our better nature when we try to find happiness the wrong way or in the wrong things, and thereby only feel transitory illusions of happiness that may cause harm to others. As a pop song claims, "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look in the mirror and then make a change...I'm looking at the man in the mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways...etc."The Dalai Lama is definitely in favor of the need for personal growth and an inner revolution for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple and Comprehensive Study on Ethics
There are few books that I've read that have captured my interest so much as to inspire me to read them twice. This is one of those books. It is not a book about Buddhism. It is not a book about religion. Yet I am confident that most people will find the core values of their faith in these pages. "Ethics" is a book about morality. It teaches the reader how we benefit individually from living our lives in an ethical manner as well as how society as a whole benefits. And it describes how society suffers, and we suffer, when our actions are immoral and self-serving.

4-0 out of 5 stars High quality, sensitive 4.5* -- recommended
A commentary on Shantideva's 8th c. classic from transcripts of Pema's teachings at Gonpo Abbey in Nova Scotia (she's resident teacher), using the Padmakara translation, verbal advice from Trungpa Rinpoche, & Dzigar Kongtrul, & prior commentaries (e.g. the Dalai Lama's "Transcendent Wisdom" & Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's "Meaningful to Behold").The text is a guidebook for compassionate action (i.e. how to be a bodhisattva); the commentary is interspersed with groups of stanzas. The book has a Western orientation & a friendly, down-to-earth tone, making it "accessible even to people who know nothing of Buddhist teachings."Interestingly, Thubten Chodron has written two books bearing titles of two chapters ("Working with Anger" & "Taming the Mind").All three are psychologically astute per Pema's prior works (e.g. "Start Where You Are" addressing lojong mind control). Her commentary is especially helpful both with cryptic passages & in explicating text in terms relevant & understandable to modern, Western readers.I have effectively utilized the section on anger.Pema's advice is practical & relevant: pp. 91-2: "Treat our crippling emotions like drug pushers. If we don't want to stay addicted for life, we have to see that our negative emotions weaken us & cause us harm.It is just as difficult to detox from emotions as it is to recover from heavy drugs or alcohol." p. 165: "Trungpa R. used to say, when something like anger arises, we should regard it as `not me.' Just think of it as a little bug trying to land on you; if your mind remains open & free of bias, the bug has nowhere to light...Anger is not `me,' it's just dynamic energy. If we don't identify with it, that energy remains unfixated & free.If it freezes into `want' & `don't want,' however...it will cause us...to suffer."
4-0 out of 5 stars No Time to Lose: A Timely Guide to the Way of the Bodhisattva
Buddhism has always struck me as a fine balance between high ideals and common sense. The former gives us something to aim for, whereas the latter delivers practical advice to lead us out of our suffering. In Pema Chodron's latest book, No Time to Lose, the American Buddhist nun provides both by offering her commentary on The Way of the Boddhisattva, an eighth-century Buddhist poem by the upstart monk Shantideva, who presented it to his fellow monks before wandering away from the university.
5-0 out of 5 stars an invaluable help
Pema Chodron is a great teacher because she always positions herself firmly in place as a learner. This book of hers is no exception, and ends up rewarding both her message and her readers with simplicity, clarity, and profound usefulness. Pema's commentary on Shantideva's mystical poem The Way of the Boddhisattva is measured and fulfilling, and her visceral understanding of the majesty of bodhichitta is alive and free on every page. Leave it to a teacher of this depth and understanding to make an 8th century mystical treatise address with intense awareness the commonplace realities of daily life. There is so much wealth for the serious practictioner contained in this book, it's tough to single out individual segments for praise; but the long middle section on Patience is especially attentive, and often piercing to the point of sublime beauty, and the segments Using Our Intelligence and Taming the Mind are wisdom overflowing. Reading this book, one easily discerns the joy of sitting at the feet of this master at Gampo Abbey and finding oneself whole time and again. "May the blind receive their sight, and the deaf begin to hear ... May the naked now be clothed, and the hungry eat their fill."Thank you, Pema, for revealing to us the path of fearlessness and love. This is food for life. Supreme recommendation, no reservations. And the book has a beautiful little appendix with a study guide that turns out to be one of its most useful attributes! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Science and Spirituality Collide
This is a completely fascinating book. The Dalai Lama has completed an amazing discourse comparing and contrasting the worlds of scientific and spirtual thought. Ultimately the goal of this book is to make the scientific community and the "world" community think about their present and future roles in the development of science, its' ethics and the reduction of suffering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly, an Ocean of Wisdom
The title "Dalai Lama" is sometimes translated into English to mean something like, "ocean of wisdom."The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, proves--yet again--that he is deserving of this title.I was curious to see how a religious leader would handle the vast topic of science. While he humbly concedes that some of the complexities of scientific thought are beyond the scope of his knowledge, he delivers a book on science that is inspirational, possibly a literary first.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of the Spirit is the Most Powerful
The Dalai Lama's wisdom in one book on the whole nature of science, ethics, are as potent as they are profound. A significant questioning from a compassionate heart on the role of higher spirit in the application of science. In a world dominated by out-of-control ego ... this book is a demonstration of why complete freedom from illusion is the only guarantee of inner peace. One of those books to read over and over again. We owe it to ourselves to conquer Mara (illusion). The world and its treasure of riches and power in the misguided context are not real. The Dalai Lama so beautifully explains why. ... Read more

If you dropped the Buddha into a modern metropolis, would he come off sounding like a 16th-century morality play or more like a drive-time disc jockey? Others have said it already. This is really an excellent book on Buddhism. Pretty complete for the neophite and insightfull for everyone. If you're looking into exploring Buddhism, and don't know for sure where to start, this could be your first book to read. The other great source of info for beginners is "Tibetan Buddhism from ground up" by A. Wallace. Peace to all sentient beings!

5-0 out of 5 stars Being Versus Analysis
Compassion is born of the heart and served by a disciplined mind. What heals our dense energies and emotions is the capacity to embrace in our cells a sense of the seven virtues ... such as compassion. Now compassion is not allowing someone to hurt us constantly but rather it is seeing the pain in the other that provokes them to act out. And by that one can see and perceive beyond our ego's filter and into what really is going on. Often when someone hurts us it is because of their own hurt and corresponding vindictiveness to extend the pain. The Buddha once said that hate never begets hate ...only love begets hate. Detached love is still love in the agape sense ... and compassion is the key to opening the heart once more to allow this remedy to flow. It is a gift to yourself ... when you release yourself from the attachment of what you want a situation to result in. Self-love is your birthright and it is in self-love that you can experience compassion along side strong boundaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Inspirational and Down to Earth
I loved this book. A friend recommended it to me when I said i was interested in meditation. Pema Chodron has a wonderfully practical down-to-Earth way of putting things, and she has a delightful sense of humor. If interested in Buddhism, meditation, or simply learning to live more fully in the present, with all of life's trials and beauty, you will find much to inspire you in this lovely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put the book down
My girlfriend bought me this book over the holidays, and I blew it off but finally had a chance read it from start to finish in a matter of 2 days.Pema Chodron wrote this book with clarity for everyone to understand her beliefs.I've read numerous other books pertaining to Buddhism and this one is by the far the easiest one to understand and comprehend. This book is based around the idea of being compassionate to yourself which in turn will penetrate others around you to develop some level of compassion.Chodron does an excellent job of motivating oneself to clear their mind and avoid unnecessary feelings of anger, aggression, pleasure, etc.Not only does Chodron explain the necessary steps to clear your mind, but she compliments this explanation with examples from her personal experience with students and teachers. The verbage outlined in this book is very easy to comprehend versus other Buddhist books I picked up and read. I've noticed in the past I've had to re-read certain passages quite a few times to fully understand it's meaning, but not with this book. This book motivates me to "start" working on myself, and in doing so it will encourage me to open my eyes to everyone and everything in this world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to change for the better
Just like the title, "How to Practice" is a gift to humankind to illuminate the right way to act. The goal of being human is to realize the potential within, which is a permanent state of happiness and peace. To achieve this, the beginner cultivates kindness and harmony for all beings.
4-0 out of 5 stars living with peace of mind
The Dalai Lama teaches how to make every action part of your spiritual practice and, in doing so, create a meaningful life filled with happiness. He recommends disconnecting the attachment of your happiness from the material circumstances of your life and opening instead to the true source of your happiness which is your inner peace of mind. There is a section on Buddhist Tantra and a discussion of how sexuality can be used in the search for peace and kindness. Dalai Lama means "ocean of wisdom." The fourteenth Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 as the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet. At the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, he was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the thirteenth Dalai Lama. In 1950 (the year of the Chinese invasion of Tibet), at age 16, he was called upon to assume full political power and leadership. Since 1960 he has resided in Dharamsala, India, aptly known as "Little Lhasa," the seat of the Tibetan government in exile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
This is an easy to read book with tons of insight into a better mindset. You should read the book slowly -- take time to reflect on each idea, such as compassion.Keep the topics of the book in mind throughout your day, whether you're a mom at home, a student at school, or working in your cubicle. It will be the first step into inner peace and practicing compassion in every day life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight to read...as usual.
I have yet to read a book by the Dalai Lama that I was not impressed and moved by. This little book is easy to read and full of insight as well as ways to incorporate the Buddhist ideal of compassion into our every day lives. You can't go wrong with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars His presence shines through
Of the 8 books I've read by Ngawang Losang Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, I like this one best (though I haven't read the Practice book others have mentioned). This one includes comments on several Buddhist texts (as have some of his others). However, this one is a bit more practical than the others--it includes some guidance on the 4 Immeasurables practices (loving kindness, compassion, equanimity, and joy--especially in others' happiness), Bodhichitta (Buddha Mind or universal compassion), and Shamatha or Shine (Calm or Tranquil Abiding). The last is the basic form of Tibetan Buddhist (Vajrayana) meditation. It is an essential starting point towards enlightenment--included in virtually all schools of Buddhism from Theravada (SE Asia) to Dzogchen and Mahamudra. All these teachings are presented in His Holiness' gentle, compassionate style, reflecting his own nature.I had the great fortune to meet him for a brief moment in Washington, DC and, IMHO, he is the most present and sincere and real person I've met.The value of his work (s) IMHO is more a reflection of what he is than who he is or what he says or writes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stages of meditative maturation
This is one of the best step-by-step elucidations of the stages of unfolding rigpa, or "natural, timeless awareness," minus the usual obfuscating overhead of Tibetan/Buddhist trappings. Offers exceptional clarity in differentiating each stage from the next, and gives helpful markers to discern when you're there, and when you're not.Extremely helpful on the path!

5-0 out of 5 stars Referenced Mahamudra text
This book contains a very fine description of the "Natural State" or "Ordinary Mind" of Mahamudra -- quite similar to the view of Dzogchen.Interestingly, it's referenced in Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche's recent work, "An Ocean of the Ultimate Meaning."The author's work, "Mahamudra: The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation" (though his name is spelled "Takpo" vs. "Dakpo" I believe it's the same author) originally entitled "Moonbeams of Mahamudra" is also in print; translated and annotated by Lobsang P. Lhalungpa. It is a much larger work (close to 500 pages).I have seen it referenced numerous times in contemporary works (e.g. Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche's).I own one but haven't read it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Simply, A Treasury of Tibetan Buddhist Thought
If I could own only one book on Buddhism, this would be my choice.Translated by Thupten Jinpa, the principal English translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, this work is a gift to those of us who speak English. The passages are clear and lucid. The elements of verse flow and the prose is elegant in its force and simplicity. This book could have been a nightmare to read, because the subject matter is not simple, and anyone who has read translations of Sanskrit, Pali or Tibetan knows that many texts come across twisted and convoluted in English. As such, it can be difficult to ascertain meaning. Such is not the case here.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book, Brimming Over With Wisdom and Compassion
There was a time when I dismissed the Dalai Lama as the latest celebrity fad. But the more I read of him, the more I studied the man's books, the more I came to realize how wrong I was.
5-0 out of 5 stars Offering remarkably enduring insights into the wit and wisdom of the Dalai Lama
The newly revised and updated twenty-fifth year anniversary edition of Kindness, Clarity, Insight by The Fourteenth Dalai Lama His Holiness Tenzino Gyatso, is expertly translated and co-edited by Jeffery Hopkins and Elizabeth Napper. Offering remarkably enduring insights into the wit and wisdom of the Dalai Lama., Kindness, Clarity, And Insight deftly covered many diverse subjects ranging from "Karma", to "Meditation", to "Eight Verses for Training the mind", to "The Path to Enlightenment", to "Tibetan Views on Dying", and so much more. An essential addition to any personal, academic, or community library Buddhist Studies reference collection and supplemental reading list, Kindness, Clarity, Insight offers a Buddhist perspective which is very strongly recommended for all students of the teachings of the Dalai Lama.
4-0 out of 5 stars The best author, but not the best book!
Everything by the Dalai Lama is amazing, but I have to say that this is probably his worst book. This is the one I started reading his works on, but I would recommend reading The Art of Happiness or Ethics for the New Millenium over this one. It was only good as a starter book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, understandable, practical, & profound
This is a beautifully written practice manual for Bn Dzogchen (~Buddhist Nyingma or old school) dream & sleep yogas based on the Mother Tantra. The author confirms most Western psychological views of dreams but, though some object, states that lucid dreaming (in which the dreamer is conscious & in control) is of great spiritual as well as psychological value. He states, despite some Buddhist authors, p. 12: "how greatly dream is valued in Tibetan culture & in the Bn religion, & how information from the unconscious is often of greater value than the information the conscious mind can provide."He provides a sensitive, balanced, non-extremist perspective-pp. 25-6: "Cultural ignorance is developed & preserved in traditions...If we are not careful, the teachings can be made to support our ignorance" & p. 94: "It can be healthy to give up worldly life & become a monk or a nun or it can be an unhealthy attempt to escape difficult experiences through suppression & avoidance."He provides explanations easily understood by western practitioners using modern analogies e.g. saying that mind can be like a computer with 2 windows open at once.Since scientists have shown that waking visualization can increase task performance, he logically extrapolates that to lucid dreaming as well. His approach is pragmatic & transportable to the West-e.g. p. 206: "Continue learning & receiving teachings, but develop a deep enough understanding that you can take from them what supports you."He also perceptively observes that awake practice of emptiness/Rigpa/mindfulness parallels lucid dreaming-i.e. viewing the awake state as a dream is analogous to lucid (conscious) dreaming-a yab-yum or yin-yang relationship & relates these yogas' spiritual aspects. This may be the best adaptation of traditional Bn/Buddhist works/methods to the West I've seen (see Traleg Kyabgon's "Mind at Ease" for a Mahamudra one).He recognizes that p. 41: "The concept of self-hatred is alien to Tibetans who do not have words to describe it" & compensates for cultural as well as terminological differences (p. 200: "According to Bn-Buddhism, the conventional self does exist.Otherwise no one would create karma, suffer, & find liberation. It is the inherent self that does not exist.Lack of an inherent self means that there is no core discrete entity that is unchanging through time").In short, it's a most valuable contribution to both spiritual realization & East-West understanding. His advice that p. 137: "Maybe we should write a sentence on our toothbrush, `after this, wash your mind" has, IMHO, universal application. This book is HIGHLY recommended-as are his other works.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book to start
We spend a third of our lives sleeping, with our consciousness totally 'lost' while the physical body rests.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the engaged dreamer
This is one of the best books on dreaming I've ever read. As a non-mystic and skeptical Buddhist, I found that some aspects of the Boen school's teachings (and sections of this book) to be a bit too mystical, but overall the philosophy of the book was generally pretty sound. The exercises he suggests are somewhat more helpful, I might argue, than the ones suggested by Stephen LaBerge in EXPLORING THE WORLD OF LUCID DREAMING. Ultimately, anyone interested in lucid dreaming, or using dreams to benefit his or her own waking life, ought to own, read, and re-read this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Destructive Emotions
I thought this book might be more of a "how-to overcome" or "prevent" destructive emotions so I found the presentationto be a little disappointing. The format was an academic-type of discussion to prove the truths behind Buddism and it used a lot of scientific jargon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very important book
The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is because I did get an overall feeling of lack of cohesiveness. I suppose that this is a peril of the format, but nonetheless, I think that true cohesiveness could be reached in this format.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but doesn't have the same impact as another format might
In general, I liked this book and found it useful.I thing it contains a lot of good concepts, but because of the dialogue format it is difficult to get one's arms around all the concepts. There are also some holes that are left unaddressed, again probably because of the format.
