Editorial Review

"J," "P," "E," and "D" are the names scholars have given to some authors of the Bible, and, as such, they are very important letters to a lot of people. Churches have died and been born, and millions of people have lost faith or found it, because of the last two centuries of debate about who, exactly, wrote the canonical texts of Christianity and Judaism. Richard Elliott Friedman's survey of this debate, in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Who Wrote The Bible?
This is a well-researched, rather scholarly treatment of Bible authorship. It is just packed with facts and research about the Bible's real authors. It makes an attempt to trace this authorship to actual people--a very difficult task--and it discovers in this effort that the Bible is a huge patchwork quilt of opinions, facts, myths, stories, poems, and historical sequences, often second-guessed by others within the Bible's own pages, and often written, rewritten and over-written by a number of authors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational literature, the bible, but NOT the word of God.
Read this book if you want to understand how the bible took form and why it was important to blend the different interpretations into one book in order to harness the belief of many into a single ideology.

Christianity is born again as a wisdom tradition, thanks to Nicoll's perspective on the Gospel parables.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Doorway to Depth in the New Testament
If you are a fundamentalist or an extremely conservative Christian, then maybe you should just stop reading this review right now; you're probably not going to like this book. On the other hand, maybe you're reading this because it's time to go a little deeper. If you are the kind of Christian, or any other seeker, that believes there is much more than literal meaning to the messages of the New Testament, then you'll find this book a wonderful starting place. If you're already well down that path, then you will surely find things here that not only resonate with your own thoughts and experiences, but can also brings insights to a finer point and challenge you to go further.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scattered and Gathered
This remarkable book reveals recent discoveries in molecular genetics that provide scientific confirmation of Biblical and oral tradition. For those completely unfamiliar with genetics, it is advised to read chapter four first. The basics of DNA are covered there, including the history of its discovery and key concepts like genes, the human genome poject, genetic markers and mitrochondrial DNA (mtDNA).
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful work, also a refutation of the review by Arthur Koestler
The following is both a review of the book as well as a counter to the review called "Based on the wrong starting point by Arthur Koestler (Spain)."Please don't take my comments as a personal attack on Arthur Koestler it is simply a refutation about his comments on the book DNA and Tradition: The Genetic Link to the Ancient Hebrews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bible For Complete Reading
I had read the entire Bible three times using the One Year Bible. I got bored with my Bible studies for awhile and so I did these daily 15-30 minute readings to keep myself spritually nourished. I have also listened to the NIV Bible on Casette from cover to cover five times one year because I had read a book by Phiilip Yancey that had advocated trying to read the entire Bible to gain an insight into your problems. I alternated versions in my daily reading from year to year-NIV and NLT.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Year Living Bible
I've been reading the One Year Living Bible for several years. I love it and enjoy the easy reading of the Living Translation. Reading a passage from the Old and New Testament, as well as Psalms and Proverbs helps me to see the unity of God's Word. I couldn't get along without my daily dose of God's precious Word. Try it, you'll love it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Easy to read
I loved this format on this particular book. The days were easy to ready and understand and they matched the Old Testament to the New Testament. There were several days that I got wrapped up in the readings that I contunied going. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good
I think this book was really good. However, I think the apolegetics could've been done a little better. They mostly deal with some of the hard verses in the bible. Not a bad job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!
This book offers a great scholarly look at some of the sayings that seem difficult to us who live in the 21st century -- far removed from the cultural setting and lingo in which the Bible was written. The work is pretty thick consisting of several hundred pages.I like this though, because (usually) more thickness means more substance, and fortunately I do indeed find it to be the case here. The book is also good because it addresses considerations from opposing camps that the authors do not necessarily agree with. Thus there is a sense of objectivity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deals with many relationships
This book, with the main focus being on friendships of women and why women need women, also points out why women need men (and visa-versa), and examines our family relationships (your first friend is your mom.)This book definately makes you think about the present, and causes you to reflect and reminisce on the past. The author gives new life to women of the Bible, and brings their personal lives and relationships into focus.
1-0 out of 5 stars Book Buys into Stereotypes
My church women's group chose this book. Many of us were quite discouraged by the views expressed by this book. She speaks in generalities a lot and seems to buy into many of the common beliefs about gender:Women are catty, men are reserved etc... Sociologist have debunked many of those myths. We found her views outdated. Some men can be catty too. Some men do develop close friendships with other men.She assumes that males and females can be categorized into these easily defined groupings.Experience and research suggest otherwise.5-0 out of 5 stars A God Sent Book
This book shares the insights of friendships between women. It is centered around friendships in the Bible and uses those friendships as examples.I've learned how to nurture the friendships God has sent my way, to be on the look out for new friendships to come my way and that God has given not only me, but every women, a unique gift of intimacy. It has opened my eyes that this gift of intimacy should be shared.Men are not left out either. This book explains the differences between the bonds of males and females also.It points out and explains how different needs are met, by different people, and by different sexes. It's a wonderful book that will help you grow in God, learn about yourself, learn about relationships, learn about how men feel and react. And if you are a man trying to figure women out - this book is for you too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The title snared me; the book thrilled me.
I was browsing in B&N when the title of this book caught my eye.I had never heard of it or the author, but I had to buy it, and I had to read it.It was thought-provoking, humorous and candid.I was born and raised a Southern Baptist; still am.But, I've grown weary over the fundamentalism and creedism of the leadership in the SBC.This book should be a "must read" for discussion groups pouring over why church and some Christians are more impediments to faith in Christ than evangelists spreading the good news.
4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Timely
Religiously Transmitted Diseases is a compelling look at some of the doctrines, both spoken and unspoken, that threaten to distract believers from the purity of the gospel message. This is an important book, and not for the squeamish of faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid material in a fun format
I am a Christian Education Director and have been looking forsome solid material for older youth 5th-8th grade. This book illustrates each book in the Bible within a couple of pages with black and white line drawing charactures. It may sound young, but even my adult committee wanted copies for themselves. I am putting together an entire curriculum using this book for the youth, over a four year period (two years OT & two years NT), along with "What The Bible Is All About Handbook:NIV Edition" for the teachers to get familiar with the Bible in about ten pages per book and the "What The Bible Is All About 101, 102, 201, 202", which are leader guides to teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, teaching tool & reference
This is one of those books where the kids version is better than the adults version! It breaks down the Bible, into sections and sub-sections. For example, it introduces the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament as the Books of the Law, explains why they are called that, the main points, the main people, an outline of what happens in each chapter- and then it goes a wonderful step further, and links in known historical information, a map of 'Where It All Happened', and other pertinent information about the world at that time. The same format is followed for each Book of the Bible. Within each book there are small illustrations & summaries of the main events in each chapter, which are surprisingly well done- not off-putting to an adult, very accessible to a child. The reference materials at the end- a good dictionary of words that one doesn't often see outside of the Bible!, Bible geography, good time lines of the Old & New Testaments, and an amazing 16 pages of good color pictures tucked away at the end make this book a must!5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!

5-0 out of 5 stars O.T.Excerpts &Studies
I found this book; "The Bible Jesus Read" by Philip Yancey to be an enlightening & insightful interpretative study of the books of Job, Deuteronomy, Prophets, Ecclesiastes & Psalms.Yancy gives history & meaning to make these O.T.favorites relevant and deeply profound. I found it gave me a renewed interest in the O.T. and an instantaneous connection; meaningful for anyone desiring to enrich their New & O. T. studies. It is abundant in the many messages that we yearn for. I'm so glad one of our participants suggested this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars How Do You Tell A False Teacher?
A true Christian teacher teaches the principles of the Holy Bible -- both the good and the bad.False teachers teach only what people want to hear.Yancey is like a false teacher. He doesn't want to teach anything that makes people uncomfortable -- such as the Holy God of the Bible ordered King Saul to annihilate all the Amalekits -- women, children, disabled included! This is our God!The God of the Bible we worship. If anyone has problem with the genocidal God of the Bible whom we worship as our God, then he can go to Hell.He will go to Hell because he doesn't believe in the God of the Bible who ordered King Saul to kill women, children, and the disabled.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate
Yancey's problem is that he follows fads. It's like in the movie, Good Will Hunting. Most of the people studying an issue will follow the latest fad. That's what Yancey does. The title, "The Bible That Jesus Read", insults Jesus Christ, who is God -- the Second Person in the Holy Trinity. The Old Testament and the New Testament clearly teach the Holy Trinity.Gospel of John chpater 1 shows all Three Persons of the Holy Triity operating. It is because people like Yancey has taken the helm of Christianity -- he is the editor of Christianity Today -- that America's Christianity is in grave trouble.Ordaining homosexuals? What do you think about that Yancey? Is that a part of the "Bible that Jesus Read"?Ridiculous!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars How to read the Bible using a
I am a member of Christians for Biblical Equality and my preferred term for myself is Biblical Egalitarian. As Wayne Grade chooses to use the term "Evangelical Feminist" to describe my beliefs while I do not, I can with similar justification claim that I see him as a member of Christians for Biblical Patriarchy; for that is exactly what he sees the Bible teaching, male rulership (which is what patriarchy literally means) in home and church, what he calls 2 point complementarians (apparently as patriarchy has negative connotations and so resorts to euphemism to make his ideas more appealing).
5-0 out of 5 stars Thor, the God of Thunder
When it comes to argumentation, this moniker was the first thing that came to mind. (Sorry to all the less playful theologians out there). Dr Grudem has handled a tremendously controversial issue with argumentative thunder. Coming away from this very thorough treatment, it is difficult to understand how anyone can persist in his or her egalitarian beliefs. As Dr Grudem helps us to understand, perhaps the only way people can persist in them is that they have decided beforehand to be loyal to an egalitarian agenda, regardless of logical and Scriptural argumentation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and much needed
I hope every Evangelical in America reads this book.It is outstanding and much needed in this culture of politically correct Feminism.Wayne Grudem has done a masterful job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nonacademic, Storytelling Approach to Explain Book of Revelation....
Dr. Jeremiah in this book, as in his Turning Point television broadcast, uses anecdoctes in explaining scriptural truth, in this case the book of Revelation.Even though Jeremiah is right on theologically, his story-telling style might be frustrating for readers who want to get straight to the verses, word study, context, and just a more academic approach to understanding Revelation. On the other hand, people who enjoyBible-based fiction or those who just don't want to strain their brain with study, might appreciate being introduced to Revelation through this book.If you like this book, I'd recommend Jeremiah's HANDWRITING ON THE WALL, which is a similar style commentary on the Old Testament book of Daniel, and which would actually be helpful to read first, since some of Revelation is based on Daniel. For those wanting a more academic approach to Revelation, I recommend Ryrie's more academic REVELATION as accessible to the beginner, and still more detailed would be the commentaries of Walvoord, Robert Thomas, or even Newell. All of these, like Jeremiah, hold to the conservative, evangelical "pre-trib, pre-mil" endtimes view that the rapture will take place before ("pre") a 7-year tribulation before a literal millial (i.e., 1000 years) reign of Messiah on Earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Right up there with 'Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs' as best in class!"

4-0 out of 5 stars A Companion to the Book of Revelation
A companion to the Book of Revelation, ESCAPE THE COMING NIGHT, takes much of the guess-work out of interpreting one of the most difficult books in the Bible. His easy-reading, yet didactic, writing style makes David Jeremiah one of today's most popular experts on prophecy. This book is anything but discouraging and full of doom; on the contrary, it is full of hope for those who understand its message.J. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
While no translation is perfect, this collection does a fantastic job of bringing the 24 books to life. This is an excellent choice for your Jewish friend on his or her birthday.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for Hebrew Text and Commentary, bad for Translation
As one who knows Hebrew, this translation is not a good one.For example, the words used in Hebrew for the Commandment "You Shall not Murder" is "Lo Tirtsach."Tirtsach comes from the letter Tav, short for "Atah" meaning you, and the word "Retsach" meaning murder. However, it is translated as "You shall not kill."I have not done extensive reaserch into other possible mistakes, but if a big part of the Torah like this is incorrectly Translated, then there may be other misnomers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Torah availability
If I could give more stars to this masterpiece I would. This is the very least you should have if you are serious about the Bible (the five Books of Moses, Writings and Prophets). No forced translations trying to push you into specific interpretations, just a mature presentation of the most important book ever. By Jews, with all the oral Tradition accessible to them. The importance of this work cannot be overstated, the English is simply the best, no comparisons, and you have the Hebrew on the opposite page. This and the Pentateuch by Artscroll are an absolute must. This one, be aware, has basically no commentary to it, it is the pure translation (basically, a very little commentary), the Pentateuch has also a full commentary. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed resource for every Protestant Christian
A well-written and organized study of the historical-gramatical methodology in simple terms. Once again Dr. Sprould takes a somewhat difficult and complex topic and brings out the essential elements important to all Christians. A must have for understanding the common reformed protestant approach to interpretting scripture.Every bible teacher and preacher will find it useful in their ministry for digging deep into the text and brining it out for others. It is an immensely helpful work for everyday bible study as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Biblical Literature and Hermeneutics
I actually listened to the audio version of this book on CD.RC Sproul is a very easy to listen to speaker and he has a gift of making difficult concepts seem easy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone and everyone can read and Study Scripture
I was shocked when I came to the review titled "Only the few know scripture" by "buttonguy".He couldn't have possibly read this book.Sproul is saying the complete opposite of what this reviewer posted.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only way to read the Bible on a daily basis.
...I will never forget the first time I read the Bible through in chronological order. It was such an eye-opening experience that I have to say it literally changed my life and the way I think and meditate on scripture. What happens to a believer when they do this is hard to express. But suddenly all those seemingly obscure prophetic passages begin to take on new meaning as you realize when this prophet actually lived and what was going on around him when he prophesied. So, I have always told my children to read the Bible through in chronological order. You can study what you want as you go, but read it daily in chronological order. Make that daily deposit in your heart and let His Word grow.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bible Study
An interesting an informative way to read the Bible through in one year. The chronological Bible arranges the story as it happens instead of the traditional order of the books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Understanding-- Excellent Resource for Self-Discipline

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Word Studies
Most modern Christians, Catholic or not, are well versed in Latinate theological terms and notions. But how well do they know the Greek words and ideas of the Scriptures themselves?Despite that the Greek New Testament has been back in the West for several centuries now, its vocabulary still has not become a part of the mental furniture of the common Christian.Logos, agape, kyrie eleison....Can you go any further? And more importantly, how well do you understand these words, words that were spoken, prayed, discussed, and debated almost every day in the ancient church?5-0 out of 5 stars Word study for the layman
I have looked at and own some of the schorlarly greek word study books. They are not easy for a layman like me to understand. Barclay presents it simple and clear. He quotes from several ancient greek minds and tries to communicate the mindset of that age so you get an idea of the picture the Bible writer is trying to describe. He presents several different definitions of the same word. A excellent book, I only wish it was on all the Bible greek words but I guess he picked the nuggets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starter Book
This book takes certain great New Testament words (more than 70) and traces their meanings in classical Greek, the Septuagint, in Hellenistic Greek, and in the Papyri, giving the reader a greater understanding of what these words meant to the writers of the New Testament and to those who read and heard their message. It makes a great starter book for someone just beginning word studies. ...
