4-0 out of 5 stars A great book...just wish it had said more!
Josh Harris (now Pastor Joshua Harris) has written a real gem of a book with "Stop Dating the Church." This is an excellent volume for people who have never "committed" themselves to themembership of a local church. He covers some very important points, and uses illustrations with which many people can easily (and embarrassingly) relate. His passion forChrist, for the people of God, and for the purpose of theChurch is readily apparrent in this volume.
2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag
I have a big problem with the chain of logic put forth by this book.True, Christ's love for the church is like the love a man has for his wife.True, the ministry God has for us seems to be centered around the local church. So far so good. But then, we run into problems because the church universal is equated to the local church, and since we are called the Bride of Christ and Christ is the groom, then me being uncommitted to my local church is the same as being uncommitted to Christ.Any Christian not committed to the local church is just "dating" the local church, so he is just "dating" Christ and not really committed to the faith.Sorry, that is just not in the Bible, and I cringe when I read reviewers report how faithful Josh Harris has been to the Bible in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars much needed
i found this book to be very, very helpful for my own heart.i am not frustrated with or tired of my church--though i am well aware of our shortcomings, but this was a refreshing read for me.in this book, josh harrischallenges the consumer mentality of self-centeredness, pride, the critical eye, and pushes for full commitment, not just mediocrity.and he gives practical and biblical advice on what to look for in a church and advice on how to maximize our joy on sundays.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Study of Luke
This study book is being used by a group of women who meet every Monday morning to study the Bible and we are happy with this choice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST
I cannot say enough good things about Wright's ability to write simply, with no big words, yet maintain deep theological and historical insight into the Scripture. His interpretations and ability to follow through with the gospel's on thought are unmatched in scholarship.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deep theology appropriately dosed for daily use
NT Wright is a scholarly academic and a highly relevant one at that. So it is a treat when he puts on his devotional hat and uses his more informal name of Tom Wright to write Luke for Everyone, he brings deep insight to wherever the gospel story takes you that day in a way that you feel you can appropriate it into your life.

IT is the best book on how to study the bible.I wish I had started with this book before I finished 96 hours in Bible courses. It would have helped me in all my other courses. It is the best system I have ever run across.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kay's study methods explained
This book is well organized and explain's Kay's Inductive Method very clearly. It is easy to read but does require practice to become second nature. Her methods make Bible passages come alive with the background and context as well as the message and underlying application in our daily lives.

I just completed reading this book and I can't get enough! If you are ready to roll up your sleves and study the truth of God's Word this is for you.It gives you pratical and sound skills for digging deep into the vast riches of God's word. I have studied for years but this is a systematic approach to Bible study and it allows you to first search out the scriptures for themsselves and then refer to other resources such as comentaries and word study guides as a source of enrichment rather than a foundation to you understanding and interpretation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of My Bible Studies for 15 Years
I have had 12 DYNAMIC METHODS OF BIBLE STUDY which I received from Billy Graham's ministry in 1990. I assume this book is a revision of the other. My RYRIE STUDY BIBLE and this book are the heart and soul of my personal Bible study since I am a layman who was brought up in the Catholic church. I felt led by God to see that the Book Survey Method, the Chapter Study Method and the Book Synthesis method all taken together formed a complete blueprint for studying a complete book of the Bible. My best study was the 3600 page study that I did on the Book of Ezekiel. When I got bored with the book studies, I looked up the topical study method. So, I have 25 of these book and topical studies since 1990.

5-0 out of 5 stars That you should bear fruit!
Bruce Wilkinson does a masterful job of taking the reader through the parable of the vine and the branches in John 15. I appreciate his faithfulness to the words of Jesus' parable and his insight into the true meaning of this parable. This book gives the reader some very practical steps to take in order to draw closer to Christ and to be more fruitful in the Chritian life. I highly recommend this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great insights, but...
I was given this book for my birthday about two years ago. John 15, the passage on which this book was written, is a very important passage for ALL Christians. Wilkinson managed to write a very engaging and interesting book with great insights. I have benefited from reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have
Actually, unless you are protestant, you should have this book. Catholics (me being one) and eastern orthodocs know more of the catechism than of the Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Reference
This is an excellent, non-judgemental statement of "Just the facts, Ma'am."It quickly and clearly tells you what is in each book and puts it into a perspective when required. It does not interpret or preach and does not pretend to substitute for reading the Bible, but rather gives a clear guide. Its explanation of the differences between the Jewish, Catholic and Protestant Bibles is particularly helpful. In an attempt to be light, it can be a bit precious at times, but this is a minor distraction to an otherwise excellent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Dummies
This book was terrific. Its also a good reference book if you forget something and want to look it up real quick. This book starts at the beginning and explains the timeline which I found very helpful. It explains the main characters and what they did and how it was important.I recommend this book to anyone who really has no idea where to begin with the bible and wants a basic understanding of its story. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars "Theological" Indeed.
I was somewhat disappointed after buying this 10 volume set. Though Kittel gives his all - around views of certain words, that method turned out to be his biggest problem. You will get 3 to 20 POSSIBLE answers to every Greek word addressed in the New Testament by Kittel. Unlike Greek lexicons, Kittel's take on meanings of words leaves one scratching his head. To anyone making a defence of certain theological positions, stick with Old and New Testament lexicons instead of Kittel's theological slants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grateful to have a set
A couple gave me the full set for Christmas in 1974.They thought it would provide me insights for preaching that also benefit them as hearers of the sermons.I used it by means of the index volume for many years. Finally, I decided to read all nine text volumes cover-to-cover.It took me six years to finish, but I found thingsI did not find through the index and would never have known to seek.At times articles in Kittel can numb the mind with boredom. At other times they can cause it to soar with new insights based in an array of factual information. The reader will probably not agree with everything.Certainly, individual contributors of the articles do not always agree with one another.Still, I would not be without Kittel. My copy is drenched in ink from underlinings and notes I have made as I read it.I know it would be tempting to buy the one volume "baby Kittel" and skip the extra expense of the larger set, but there are key pieces of information that did not make it into the editors' view of what should be included in the one volume edition. Spend the money and get the real thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Work for Word Studies
Students of New Testament Greek should purchase this book. The one volume abridged addition is suited for quick word studies and for those looking for short background history on Greek phrases and words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaty enough to read this year and next
This is a great devotional book, and I am not usually one that finds devotionals set up like this very interesting. It is set up to have a reading each day during Advent, Christmas and through to Epiphany, and the readings are all written by people like C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Kathleen Norris, Annie Dillard, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, etc. This is no, "What was the innkeeper thinking" sort of advent reading book.It is thoughtful and insightful and has a lot to say that ties into the preparative nature of advent, that is the preparation for the messiah's return. The writings vary in length and type from scholarly writings to musings to poetry or introspection. The readings are meaty enough, too, that you could certainly read them this year and again next year and they'll still be good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than Advent and Christmas reading.
I really shouldn't write a review yet, because I haven't finished the book. I'm doing so in hopes that people will buy the book in time to use it this year. This is an excellent book of essays, a few poems, and some sermons. There are some very "heavy hitters" in the mix--check out the table of contents. I have only read through December 2 so far, but it has been a very rewarding journey just a few steps down the path. I particularly love the piece by Karl Rahner (1904-1984), a German Jesuit and theologian. It is very cutting edge theology for its time and even for today, and it reads beautifully and powerfully. Henri Nouwen is also excellent, along with Sylvia Plath's poem.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Starting with Moses & all the prophets......
I own four JPS Torah commentaries; Genesis, exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Whilst written by Jewish scholars, they are a huge help to the Christian preacher and Bible study scholar. In depth knowledge of the language, and traditions offer fascinating, whilst sad insights to the Jewish interpretation of the Torah. I would recommend these books very highly to anyone with a strong faith in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. They, even unknowingly clearly point to him as the Saviour of the world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Be Advised, Speciality is Key
Because of the degree of specialty of each of the writers (each are specialists on the Law), a decent (at least some) amount of Hebrew knowledge is key, to allow the reader to evaluate decisions made by the authors. It is also key to remember that these commentaries (following after the aims of JPS) are thoroughly Jewish and track the development of understanding for the passages discussed, though not necessarily to the detriment of the series.A great work, worth the shelf space of any Rabbi, Preacher, or Scholar.rq ladonai kvd

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to my roots
I bought this back in college and just now got around to reading it. It's basically a collection of apocryphal and otherwise "unaccepted" texts regarding Jesus of Nazareth and his apostles.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Really Lost Books of the "Bibleth"
These do not seem to be any "Lost Books of the Bible."Many of them were most likely composed after the 2nd century and in the third and fourth. In the Protoevangelion the story of Mary's immaculate conception is told and could have been an influence on the Church's Mariology. In other books, people may have wanted to fill in some of Jesus' life.In the Infancy several times Mary uses the clothes or bathe water of Jesus to heal people. This also contains the story about Jesus speaking even while in the cradle, which I believe found its way into the Koran.Jesus kills several people as a child and later on takes over and teaches his teachers.Of last interest was the writer's claims that Jesus studied the law until aged 30.Nicodemus gives more information on the trial of Jesus and then switched to the story of Jesus's descension into hell and victory. I never knew that Beelzebub, the Prince of Hell, was different from Satan.

1-0 out of 5 stars he missed the point completely
the writer's attempt to deconstruct Paul only shows how much he does not understand Paul's epistles. It is a sad fact that those who cannot grasp something, simply because that understanding is not in them, try to make it into something else completely. Hoping, thus, to 'justify' themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST ANOTHER ONE ON PAUL
Bishop Wright has done it again. I have read several volumes on the apostle Paul, and I have to conclude that this one by NT Wright is among the top three.
3-0 out of 5 stars N.T. Wright...."Paul"
Going inside the mind of Paul. This is what N.T. Wright has attempted to do.He has attempted to "think Paul's thoughts after him.(inside cover)"He has done this by drawing on his knowledge and experience of Pauline literature as well as examining Paul in his Jewish Roots. His goal is to "constantly be stirred up to fresh glimpses of God's ways and purposes with the world and with us strange human creatures (inside cover)."Before I shall humbly attempt to interact with the argument of Wright's book, I want to make two preliminary observations.

I was eager to receive this bible because the reviews were favorable.I am very dissapointed in this product.I purchased the leather indexed edition which has no margins for notes, is very small (aprox. 9 x 6) and looks more like a thin-line bible then a bible which costs over $50.00.I have many bibles and this is the worst quality by far.Very dissapointed with Zondervan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell the critics to ease up!
This is not a commentary. It is not a lexicon. It is not a dictionary. It is a bible translating two very precise languages into English. 5-0 out of 5 stars Zondervan Handbook to the Bible
Unlike other reviewers, I firmly believe this book belongs in any and all church libraries. So many people wonder what to make of scriptures and this book provides keen insight. It is well organized and suberbly edited. When combined with the rich illustrations, this book is a bargain for what Amazon is asking for it.
1-0 out of 5 stars "Did God really Say...?"
There were a number of examples in this book where the authors seem to question the truth of God's word--1: "...it might be unwise to seek to reconstruct Israel's earliest history from the stories in Genesis..." (p63) 2: "Creation is described as taking place in six days...This is not a chronological account..."(p116) 3: "Noah's story: As with creation, we should approach this account as story..."(p122)There were others I don't have the space to mention.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource
At last a book about the bible from Zondervan which does not spend most of the time telling you what to beleive and how to do it by getting itself into improbable tangles trying to eliminate the discrepancies between various books of the bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read !
Topic:The History of the bible, its translations, and attitudes towards it.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent survey.
This is an introduction to the History of the Bible, but even readers who are already familiar with the outline of the subject will, I think, discover many details that are new to them in this very well told story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and approachable
Pelikan writes in an easy style and smoothly flowing perspective born of his own long familiarity with the material. He chronicles the formation of the texts known as the Old and New Testaments from their earliest oral traditions. It becomes clear that through long years and re-scribing and translating the Bible, it has been in evolution. The major effort in recent years is to return to the earliest accurate version available, and that this requires considerable scholarship to accomplish.

5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL study of God's Word!
I studied this material when Dr Stringfellow was writing it. He was Associate Pastor at my church, First Baptist Van Nuys, CA. Our pastor, Dr Jess Moody invited Dr Stringfellow to share the material with the whole church, so Dr Moody arranged for our church to open a seminary, and Dr Stringfellow "tried out" the material on our church, in a class attended by those who were interested. The material was fascinating, and once Dr Stringellow had "ironed out the wrinkles", he published the book!
