hyper critical
I've read this book several times and I think it is a nice introduction to Christian Apologetics.I see many reviewers bashing this book's simplicity.Well, it was written to be that way.The information is presented with much more detail in Mcdowell's "evidence" books, this book is like an overview. The liar, lunatic, or Lord arguement is a valid one, if presented properly. Once you show the validity of the Scriptures, there are no other options. Legend has no place, as the new testament contains oral traditions that can be accurately dated to within 2 years of Jesus' crucification,and the whole new testament written by first hand witnesses or a close associate of a first hand witness. Some one claimed that a possibility was that a man named Jesus might have never existed.Just know, you are in the SEVERE minority here.Most skeptics even agree that he indeed existed.Anyways, there are better apologist out there, but this is an excellent introduction for a spiritual seeker( it can be read in a couple of hours).There is much more info out there if one truly wants to seek.Not everyone does, as it's rather uncomfortable to have their unbelief threatened, so they hide behind so called intellectual hurdles,putting all their effort into asking questions, instead of finding answers.
To the Point
This is a good little book.It's strongest characteristic is that it's to the point and efficient, in the way it presents its case/information.

To Stephan C. Donahue: Can you say "ad hominem"?
To Stephan C. Donahue in response to your review, your ad hominem argument is self evident. For those whose Latin may be a tad rusty: In Donahue's review he appeals to personal considerations and attacks "against the man" (the author) rather than to fact or reason.
Excellent and Unbiased
The scholarship is solid, there is a profound attempt to be unbiased and let the facts speak for themselves, and there are few preconceived notions that affect the analysis.The author truly strives to remain theologically and doctrinally neutral regarding the various Christian denominations, and the result should not be surprising to anyone.
Incredibly in-depth look into biblical Greek
This book is a profound eye-opener regarding the translations we use everyday and how time and bias has shaped them. The conclusion is a huge suprise but beautifully founded. This book is a masterpiece for anyone looking to truly understand the nature of how we got the bible today or who is looking for truth. All the major arguements of doctrine stem greatly from scpriture. It becomes impossible to argue or find the truth an arguement without first understanding the translation process and which translation brings us the closest to what the original Greek/Hebrew writers meant. I'm a big fan of Erwin McManus.
Echoing a revolution
This book is not unlike McManus's other writing, yet it brings in a new inspiring energy to Christian living. McManus makes it clear that we can live life to the fullest by pursuing every moment. Historical Christianity, not "replacement theology"
To correct the previous reviewer's post, Dever's position on Israel is not some new "replacement" theology but the historic Christian understanding prior to the invent of 19th century dispensational theology. Dever views God's promises to Israel in light of a covenantal structure rather than a dispensational one. The Old Covenant completely fulfilled in Christ, must now be viewed through His fulfillment and establishment of the New.
Could be a great book, but has one big flaw.
I really would like to give this book a five star review.The book is I will admit very helpful for those of us going into the seminary.Each chapter is a sermon based upon a book of the Bible.In other words, from Genesis forward, each book of the Bible is given an overview of its importance and its need in the larger text of the Bible.For those who will be ministers, this book helps you to see how you too can give an "overview" sermon on a particular book of the Bible.For those of you who will be teachers, this book helps you to gain extra information that can help you when teaching a class on Old Testament theology.The writing is clear, the sermons are engaging, and Pastor Mark Dever knows a lot of what he is talking about.It is good to know and have examples on how one can use the Old Testament in ministry, whether teaching or preaching, because so many people (sadly) have a harder time understanding the OT more than understanding the NT.Thus I would really like to give this book a five star review because I know that I will use it when I teach and minister the Old Testament when I finish up my seminary program.

A Treasure Trove of God's word
This book sits right on my desk and I reach for it to provide much encouragement and timely motivation. The words within are indeed "more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb." (Psalm 19:10) God's Words are Powerful Tools of Change
Although I do not consider myself a "true" Christian in that sense, reading this book filled me at once with thankfulness, inspiration, and fulfillment of God.Various biblical quotes are convenientlycategorized for you, from subjects such as Faith to Forgiveness.Eachheading has at least a page of quotes to bring you closer to God's meaningand intentions for those subjects.At such a modest price, I suggest youkeep one book tucked away for personal guidance and buy another one for afriend who needs spiritual lifting. ... Excellent resource at your fingertips
This Bible is perfect for all ages. It gives complete doctrines and understanding of our Catholic faith. I am a convert to the church for 4 years now, and this Bible has been a inspiration to me. I reccomend that you purchase Catholicism for Dummies as a companion to your studies.

Also an Important Reference and Commentary
Do not view this book as merely a "defense of the resurrection" - a number of more slender volumes can accomplish that feat. This book is instead a significant historical and theological treatment of the idea and doctrine of the resurrection within a wide variety of ancient sources. While it does result in an affirmation of the historic Christian position that Jesus indeed rose from the dead, this book also serves more broadly as an historical and theological reference work.
Traditionalist Propaganda, Sadly
Sadly, Wright throws up the facade for his Evangelical readership that Early Christian resurrection stories should be taken as literal and historically defensible.Should we expect anything different from someone socio-religiously tethered to his own conservative community and market?Wright foists upon his readers technical propaganda aimed at certifying the myths of his modern Western religious tradition.His often grossly dishonest use of primary literature characterizes his tendentious manipulation of the ancient literary data.This work is not an open historical inquiry, but an apology sold to his already deluded market.The one redeeming value of the work is that Wright surveys a large array of ancient literary sources, and so one gains a substantial list of primary references for investigation.If, however, you wish to read a far more balanced work on the topic, might I recommend G. Riley's Resurrection Reconsidered.Riley is a true Classicist and scholar of nascent Christian traditions, not a traditionalist or apologist.
There's an Obvious Explanation being IGNORED
As usual, NT Wright has missed the Correct Answer in his quest to shore up the fading structure of Christianity.

The real deal
I originally got this volume as a way to practice my Greek a little bit more.What I found, obviously, was that LXX Greek is very different than GNT Greek.But the other find that I came to was that it was a marvelous translation of the Greek text.I was interested in just how much the Greek LXX different from the Hebrew scriptures.I like the volume a lot for it's translation and for the original text which parallels the English.I use it frequently in a library with the GNT and the Hebrew Scriptures as a handy 3 volume set for desk reference.I would say that you have to be a fairly serious scholar to warrant something like this but if you are then it is well worth the money and looks to be made to last.Definitely a must have for pastors and theologians!

Wonderful book for the serious learner
The entire OT and the apocrypha in Greek with English along side. I am not fluent in Greek but use it as study material.(Two years was not enough for me!) Since I don't know any Hebrew, this should be of benefit to me. ... Read more

Highest recommendation
Bailey's unique contribution is that he sat down with a number of trusted Palestinian nomads and listened carefully to their take on the cultural issues behind various parables. He contends, with some justice, that this group of people have something in contact with the original culture that these parables arose in, and thus can help us understand the unstated assumptions and cultural implications of the texts. He invested many years in this and did it with care and precision. On top of that, he has explored the early translations of the New Testament into Syrac and related languages. The result is nothing short of stunning. His analysis of the puzzling parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16:1-13) is worth the price of admission alone, and even on the well-trod parable of the Good Samaritan, he has much valuable insight to share.
Anyone else missing a page?
Just thought I'd write a note because my combined edition book is missing two pages that are supposed to follow p. 105.Though there is a page 106 and 107, I notice the footnotes in my book go from 79 on p. 105 and skip to 87 on p. 107...obviously a misprint.Amazon had never heard of such a problem so I'm getting a new one...just wondered if this had happened to anyone else.

Great but not Fully Trustworthy
This is a great set of books for the serious Hebrew student. but not for the Bible teacher or pastor who is rusty on Hebrew. Quick Review
Moving through every Hebrew word from Genesis to Malachi, this work provides for each word its grammatical identification, its page number in the BDB Lexicon, and its English translation.

Funny and easy to understand...a must read
Really helped me to understand about the Bible. Very easy reading. Perfect for teenagers as well as adults.

Wonderfully written!
This book is excellent for the beginner. It's basic, easy to understand style is a definite plus! If you're looking for a good book to teach you the basics, and take you on a fun trip to understand and knowing the bible, this is it!

101? Basic? No. I'd Call That Basic Plus Plus!
As the title implies, the "101" would mean "beginner level". Indeed, in this book, Bickel and Jantz wrote a really good introduction to the Bible. They start with the authorship and brief history of the Bible, why Bible is so interesting, and then moving to explain the Bible part by part -- in a Christian perspective.

The RSV Bible (annotated or otherwise)
I, having recently given my hardbound edition of the RSV Annotated Study Bible away, hope to purchase the leather bound edition soon because it is an excellent Bible. Along with many reviewers the RSV is truly the only ecumenical Bible around- approved for use by Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches.
The Best Available
Of all of the available translations that I have had exposure to, this is by far the best. All of the available books are there, but are organized in such a way as to not interfere with serious study by members of any denomination. The translation itself and the annotations are marvelous. I couldn't ask for any better.

Sometimes excellent but hard to read and not user friendly
Many reviewers (particularly the more conservative Catholics) think this version of the Bible, the RSV, is the cat's meow.While I entirely sympathize with them in theory, I found this particular edition to be a bit of a pain to read, for several reasons.

As much a work of art as it is a religious text

Satisfied for About 20 Years Using this Set
This is a great set.I got it about 20 years ago when it first came out, and, as a pastor of over 23 years, I say "Go for it!"Although I do not refer to this work every week, it comes in handy when I need to do a Hebrew word study. Because it is cross-indexed with Strongs, you can find the Hebrew words (and their definitions/expansions) without knowing a stitch of Hebrew. Good, but too short to be useful
This is a good Hebrew research tool. It's best feature is that it's only two volumes (compared to 11+ for the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament!). The entries are short compared to other theological lexicons and wordbooks, however, and you don't get as much depth as you do in other theological lexicons. Quick Review

Awesome Study
Great study---I have always enjoyed the teachings of Kay Arthur. Understanding many (but not all)of the facets of God, His names shows He cares for me in evey area of my life. In studying the Names of God, I can now pray and believe using specific names knowing that God is my salvation, peace, provider, healer........

A disappointment
This book is a study of the names of God.However, I found some of the commentary and discussion points a stretch - discussing sexual abuse when studying the account of Hagar.
