4-0 out of 5 stars Uninspired luke-warm translation, nice edition
About 3.5 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality study Bible
I LOVE this Bible!!I have many bibles that I have purchased on line. For the price the quality is superior to any bible I have purchased.I love the wide margins and the quality of the leather and bindings.I wish more publishers would produce bibles of this quality. This is a prime example of what is expected when spending aprox. $50 or more dollars on a bible!Good going Kay Arthur!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite study bible
I have been using the NISB for approximately two years now and it has become my favorite. While study bibles with notes in them are wonderful, so is "creating" your own study bible on the wide margins of this one! There are many wonderful maps and historical notations in the study bible, but not ones that are outright doctrine.I use many of the study suggestions like marking the bible in distinctive colors or signs for the main points in each book/chapter.Each chapter has a blank outline that you can fill in to summarize the book after you have gone through the chapters.I found that when I use my own study examplies that I remember them more easily than when I read other people's notes.I also like the literal translation that the NASBprovides. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars So Very Disappointed
I had reservations about it when my small group decided to give this book a whirl, and although I was game and tried to like it, I just couldn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Bible study
Our church's women's ministry used this book for our Bible study and enjoyed it tremendously. I could relate to so many of the characters and was so horrified by some of the others! I enjoyed reading about the many relatively obscure Biblical women. We had several elderly ladies in our group who were surprised to read stories they'd never remembered reading before. I liked that Higgs focuses on Biblical women who were strong leaders, even if they were bad for a season.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Kind of Bible Study, Different and Good
I have to say Liz Curtis Higgs sheds new light, at least for me, on a lot of those women in the Bible. You know, I've read about all these women in Ms. Curtis's book before, but somehow when I read my bible I missed a whole heck of a lot. I don't know how, because when I read this book I wanted to slap myself upside the head plenty of times. Duh, I'd mudder, how come I didn't see that? How come I didn't get it? Well I'm getting a lot of it now. As a Bible teacher, Ms. Curtis really excells and she makes it oh so interesting. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it best or second best?
This is one of the two big (about 1000 cards/words) sets of pre-made Biblical Hebrew flash cards readily available for purchaseon Amazon.Recently I reviewed the other set,the Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary Cards by Dillard, which sell on Amazon for$12.95.The Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary Cards by Van Pelt and Pratico (part of the Zondervan product line) sell for $17.95, a bit more.As I noted in my review of the Dillard set,if I were still a starving college student, the five dollar difference alone might have inclined me toward Dillard. Now that I've got a real job in the real world, I sprung for BOTH of them. I have been using both of them in my personal study of Hebrew and I like them both, though each is a little different from the other with different strengths.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great set of vocabulary cards
I just saw them at a store the other day, these are great - thick cards, nice black uniform print, standard size, keyed to 3 most popular grammars, and also arranged by order of frequency. I am getting Van Pelts cards ASAP, and will write a review once I use them for a few days.Amazon carries another set of Hebrew vocabulary cards by Raymond Dillard - those are plain awful, see my review. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Studies on The Sermon on the Mount
One of the most impactful books I have ever read next to the Bible itself! Every professing Christian should read this book over and over. A classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars complete, detailed
This book goes into Jesus' Great Sermon in great detail, studying every phrase as well as 1st emphasizing the importance of the whole. It cannot be taken out of context or out of order- our Lord made it perfect as is.It is ALL very important, even the parts I would skim over in the past, and this book is very good at pointing that out

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing reading for a believer
Doctor Martyn Lloyd-Jones has preached approximately 60 sermons that makeup this book.Fortunately the writing has not removed the impact of the preaching that has produced this work.I strive to share this book with brothers and sisters in Christ for it is my belief that every member of the Body of Christ would be mightily impacted through the reading and studying of this work. The reading of this book has caused me to purchase additional writings by this author, such as; his series on Romans, and the series on Ephesians.I was first introduced to the author when I was given a two volume biography of Doctor Lloyd-Jones by Iain Murray ... another enriching experience. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars HOGWASH!!!!!
This is classic case of buffet style bible reading. It's all well and good if we focus on the touchy-feely parts of the bible and come away with that same warm and fuzzy feeling that drives the sale of Christian books and stupefies the simple minded into filling the collection plates.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook...
This book was assigned reading for an introductory hermeneutics class.I found that the authors were able to strike a solid balance between readability and intellectual depth. While I felt sufficiently challenged to think as I read the book, I never felt like they were talking above my ability to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best text book this semister
Several times so far in my student life I have come up to text books that I felt didn't do a good job. This book is different. Not only does it cover the subject in an excellent matter but this book teaches. You actually learn not just have a bunch of data shoved at you. Highest recommendation in fact plan to not only send the book to friends but will use this to teach out of later. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Correction
I haven't read the book, I just wanted to correct something.tvtv3 said that The Message is "not an actual translation" of the Bible. In truth it is not. A translation is a paraphrase taken from another English version of the text (like the NLT).When a text is translated from the original Hebrew and Greek it's called a version (NKJV, NIV).That's what The Message is, a version.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great meditation
Perhaps the best thing about this book is the premise it is written on -- that being a Christian means embarking on a journey, away from the world, toward the City of God.Not an original idea, but certainly one we can stand to be reminded of often, and one I'd love to see more books devoted to that.5-0 out of 5 stars correction of misinformation in review posted by tvtv3

1-0 out of 5 stars What a load of Rubbish !!!!!
Thousands of years after the birth of Christianity, generations of Theologians has come and gone, many more thousands of different sects of the Christianity, not to mention the fact that we can't even get a room-full of Christian Apologetics to agree on what God is all about .....Yet along comes Finis J., Sr Dake with his book and figured it all out.... OH PLEASE!!!!!Let me remind Finis and my fellow readers of what god himself had said:
5-0 out of 5 stars In a Class of It's Own
This book will only appeal to two types of people: Those who like a very literal approach to interpretation and those who like non-conventional theory regarding Creation and the subject of angels, demons, giants and other less discussed topics in Genesis and world history.Dake amazingly merges all this in his huge volume of small print theological meat. From eternity past to eternity future and all in between is included. It is a library of information. It may be the only theological treatise you need alongside your favorite Bible. It is his magnum opus and rightly so.But if you are looking for lightweight, non-literal, allegorical, thin and politically correct approach, steer away from this, as it will infuriate you!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest Biblical study aids ever...
I have used God's Plan for Man for approximately 5 years now and it has been a continual reference to draw from. It also was a great reference to use during my time within our church's seminary school. I originally purchased this from Dake Publishing and then later bought one through another Christian book distributor. I have come to understand the word of God in greater detail and clarity through its use and it truly is like a Bible School in and of itself. The only thing it doesn't do for you is pray for you and read itself to you. Dake does have tapes on his website that are recorded teachings for God's Plan for Man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lewis gets to the heart of the matter
Thankfully this is not one of those books on the Psalms that will tell you that this or that Psalm is a lament or a cultic liturgy or an ode to someone bent on the succession of the Davidic monarchy. Lewis gets to the heart of matters, raising and answering questions that concern intelligent believers. For instance, what are we as Christians to make of imprecatory Psalms? Lewis considers not only those who write such Psalms, but also what has happened to them in life to get them to that point. Why so much talk about God's judgment? Lewis corrects the erroneous impression that judgment in the Psalms refers to God's punishment of evil doers. The primary sense is of a plaintiff pleading with God (the Judge) to pass judgment in their favor. What of the apparent self-righteousness of some of the Psalmists? Lewis says that all the talk about the Law is no Pharisaism but a the delight in Order: "The Order of the Divine mind, embodied in the Divine Law is beautiful." (53) Lewis' favorite is Psalm 19 and his writes about it in such a way as to make it come alive. The searching cleansing sun, is the searching cleansing Law. He identifies the key phrase as "there is nothing hid from the heat thereof" (19.6) That, for Lewis, describes the Law: :"luminous, severe, disinfectant, exultant (57).Finally, I must mention the surprising chapter on the subject of praise. Lewis writes that praise is not a matter of telling God how wonderful he is, but a way of expressing gratitude for what we care deeply about. Praise is something all human beings naturally do: we praise things and people that we value. When we praise them we complete our enjoyment of them through our words: "praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment" (81). Despite the fact that Lewis was not a theologian, he had a keener grasp of comparative religion, and Hebraic concepts than many biblical scholars. This is a book written by someone who has spent years praying the Psalms, not by someone who treats the Psalms as if they were an insect under a microscope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditative
Bonhoeffer really drives you into appreciating the spiritual depth of the Psalms and their Christ centred significance. I found the book difficult to put down. A great spiritual read.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sensitivity of a Poet and the Honesty of a Scholar
With the sensitivity of a poet and the honesty of a scholar, C.S. Lewis delves into the Psalms. In doing so, he is not afraid to raise uncomfortable questions, such as how to understand the apparent self-righteousness and gleefulness of many psalmists; or the question whether God is an egocentric monarch who demands people to praise Him as if He needed such praise. Other issues Lewis deals with are the concept of Judgment in the Psalms, as well as their portrayals of death, nature, and the beauty of God. He also devotes two chapters to understanding the prophecies, or second meanings, in the Psalms

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Back to the Basics...
This book is an awesome review for "old" Christians and an excellent start book for "new" Christians. The devotional focuses on how to study the Bible, have quiet times, and memorize Scripture.I have been a Christian for many years and learned something new from this book in every chapter.I can't wait to go on in the series! You won't regret buying this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in a discipleship course
A great discipleship course in the basics.I took this course myself in 1987 and after that took the leadership training and co-led the course at my church.Currently (2006), I am a volunteer at the local Center for Women's Ministry where I facilitated the class again. From what I've seen, it's the best training out there for a Christian, whether new or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Both One on One & Small Group Discipleship
This is ideal material to use for either one on one discipleship (training) or for a small group. The material is simple and clear to understand, but requires committment of all involved.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for middle school kids up to adults
My family purchased this book, along with the "Prove It! God" and "Prove It! Prayer" during the summer.I find this one to be particularly good, especially in her selection of quotes from sources ranging from the Bible to C.S. Lewis to Mother Teresa. The style of the writing is geared to teens, but the author is very direct, pulls no punches, and doesn't attempt to water down the truth of the faith and of Jesus's teachings. Many authors of adult authors would be well-served to consider the effectiveness of books like these.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding apologetics, not just for teens
My teen gobbled up the books in this series.I'm twice his age and enjoyed it, also.Other teens have borrowed the books from us and have found them useful in defending the Catholic faith to Christians of other denominations.Unlike the previous reviewer, I do not see the title as asking the Lord to "Prove It!", rather I see the title as what our teens commonly hear from others when it comes to our faith. These books give teens (and adults for that matter) the knowledge to defend the Catholic faith and "Prove It!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great OT basic
Without blabbering on about the evangelical theological leaning of each chapter I thought I'd write an actual review of this book rather than attempt to debate the authors' theology. First off, the book is a great survey. It is a bit short at times and a bit simplistic around some of the prophets (the sections on Jonah and Haggai for example are far too basic) but it is always fair and contains some great visual aids, charts, photographs and organization. The book is set up simplistically and is a must for first year theological students. The only real problem I have ever had with this text book is that I have never been a fan of the index (which is far too short).

4-0 out of 5 stars It is an interesting read
I am going to seminary right now and this is the book being used for OT I (going from Genesis to Kings.I find the book an easy to read book, the way the chapters themselves are set up are fairly straight forward, giving consideration and theory.I would imagine that I'm probably more conservative than the writers of the book, but then again, I take things with a grain of salt ... by that I mean I go back and trust that the Bible is to be taken as a literal word of God and message of God to we who are the human race.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book, but the authors ride the fence
I thought that this was a really interesting textbook. The authors reveal the message of each Old Testament book, while discussing some of the scholarly issues surrounding each part of the Old Testament (such as the JEDP theory). Unfortunately William Lasor passed away in 1991, so Hubbard (who is dead now too) and Bush recruited six other OT scholars to complete the revision. This may be one of the reasons why the authors ride the fence on issues such as whether or not we can take the numbers in Numbers literally, the number of Isaiah's, the historical worthiness of Joshua and Jonah, and the happenings surrounding the Exodus from Egypt. The authors also seem to lean toward the book of Jonah being a parable rather than actual history, although they don't take a really strong stand on that, either.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Missed opportunity
The original 1981 edition of the Plaut commentary on the Torah marked a dramatic improvement over the fundamentalist Hertz Torah commentary (The Pentateuch and Haftorahs: Hebrew Text English Translation and Commentary by Joseph H. Hertz) which it replaced in Reform Jewish congregations. It attempted to give both a traditional Jewish and a modern historical view of the text. In this connection, the frequent references to the widely recognized sources (J, E, D, P) is particularly welcomed in a Jewish study Pentateuch. However, it did have a number of weaknesses only some of which have been addressed in this new edition. These weaknesses included:
5-0 out of 5 stars An Example of Good Biblical Scholarship
The eidtors of THE TORAH: A MODERN COMMENTARY, REVISED EDITION did a credible job in producing this Torah commentary. This reviewer was skeptical due to concerns of "political correctness" vs. accuracy precision. When perusing this book, this reviewer was pleasantly surprised that changes were made in favor of accuracy.

4-0 out of 5 stars good, but similar to other FP studies
So far, I'm enjoying the First Place program and the Bible Studies. This is our second study, and while it's easy and keeps me focused on my goal of keeping Christ first place in my life, the second study is not that different from the first. They aren't real deep studies, so they're perfect for someone who's just starting a new routine of daily Bible study.Others might want to get something deeper to use alongside the First Place studies.EVfEP is a great follow up to Giving Christ First Place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Victory for Everyday People
This is the second of the First Place Bible studies that I have done.I find it easy to use, not consuming too much time, but providing MUCH food for thought.I especially love the CD's that accompany the studies that help with scripture memorization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Victory in the First Place series!
They've done it again. The First Place bible studies continue to be my favorites. I love them because studies are easy to do, each lesson takes about 5 to 10 minutes each day. But they keep you thinking & learning all day long! Plus the Scripture Memory CD helps you learn 10 verses throughout the study. This one had a bit more hokey-sounding music, it was still good though. I highly recommend ordering this study & looking into joining an actual First Place group. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For liberal theologians
Buyers beware, the Bible commentaries are written by liberal theologians. They tend to disbelieve miracles and try explaining away Devine prophecy by assigning late dates for the books. When I was reading the commentaries, I couldn't help but get the feeling that the writers were trying to destroy my faith. Also, while it is not a bad translation, the NRSV does have some gender-neutrality inserted into it. All in all, I cannot recommend this study Bible. It reads like skeptics and non-believers wrote it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Study Bible
If you are searching for a study Bible that focuses on the best modern scholarship around concerning the texts that make up the Bible, you will soon find out from most reviews on Amazon (as well as from other places such as universities) the best of the more objective ones are the HarperCollins Study Bible (just revised this year), the New Oxford Annotated Bible (3rd edition), and the New Interpreter's Study Bible. All three come with the New Revised Standard Version, generally accepted by scholars as the most accurate English translation. All come with the Apocrypha, though the New Oxford Annotated Bible is available without it.If you can afford it, I recommend all three.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT REFERENCE
This little book is a handy reference; I keep it where I study and have given away several; it's a great gift for someone who is needing to find particular scripture and isn't sure where to look~or even has a need but doesn't know what scripture would apply~or just to thumb through for inspiration; well worth it's price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Power in His Word
This is an excellent resource; one of Joyce's best books. In understanding how much power God's Word possesses and also how much power we have in speaking His Word out loud, we become grounded and centered in the promises of the Lord. This book also helps to understand our role in our relationship with Him; read His Word, meditate on His Word, believe His Word, speak His Word, Obey His Word.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING!
I am a Christian and have been most of my life.I have read the Bible off and on but ever since I have picked up this book I have been encouraged to pick up the Bible much more often!I have had this book for 8 days and I am amazed at the changes in myself and my family because of reading the Word outloud. It's a great springboard to start reading the Bible if you've not seen changes before.I more than highly recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study bible for all
John MacArthur's notes are clear, concise, and thorough in providing helpful interpretation, background information, and principles for studying the Word of God. I highly recommend this bible for absolutely anyone new to the Bible,or anyone at all looking to study the Bible. I actually prefer the NKJV version, but I have found the NASB to be clearer in many cases. I do recommend comparing versions, however, since the NKJV can be more accurate in some cases, so if you have the means, have both on hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good study Bible
This is a very good study Bible and one I use a lot.It provides excellent notes on every book of the Bible in a readable and easy to understand format.MacArthur is a Calvinist, so his notes come from that prespective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Study Bible
I have listened to John MacArthur on the radio, and have always found that he interprets the scripture the way it was meant to be understood. I feel that I can trust his teaching and really enjoy using his study Bible. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Language too schlorarly for the average person
Found the language of the book too scholarly.Example:"The verbal form expressing Yahweh's actions is characteristically participial; that is, this is not an intrusive eventfulness, but an assured ongoing process that Yahweh does regularly and everywhere."The entire book is written in this manner.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Psalms in their Theological-Psychological Perspectives
Dr. Walter Brueggemann, Old Testament professor/mentor/friend, taught this material at Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves, Missouri and later as a continuing education workshop in Florida. This is, in my judgment, the best work done on the Psalms and I use it as the basic text in my course in Florida Christian University/Theological Seminary on "The Psalms and Counseling".Not only does Brueggeman categorize the Psalms into "Orientation", "Disorientation", and "New Orientation" (an improvement on "Reinorientation" as a type), but he also helps us have a psychological perspective on these psalms and their uses within the church and our personal appropriation/and belief systems. This helps us find our route through disorientation and depression on into new orientation and joyful health.

5-0 out of 5 stars love, passion and huge intellect
Brueggemann groups the Psalms together under three general themes: poems of orientation, disorientation and new orientation. He is not thereby wanting to rigidly classify the Psalms, but is seeking to show that such a grouping corresponds to the actual flow of human life. A nice feature of the book is its size. Works on the Psalms tend to be overly long (dealing with each and every Psalm). In a book of a mere 205 pages, Brueggemann deals with the most important of them, the most notable omissions being Psalm 19, 20, 45, 46 (some of my favorites).
