5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless!
Dr. Howard G. Hendricks is a master teacher, and this book is a summary of what might be his most life-changing class ... a class on how to study the Bible on your own! I had the privilege of taking that class. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants the joy of personal discovery. If you want to be able to open the Bible and discover what it means and what it means to you, then this book is one that can get you to that point!

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration and helpful book for women
The introduction of this book is worth the retail price. It's an essay in itself. A sample sentence: "To have a friend is to acknowledge that some part of someone else's life which we have held tenderly, trustingly in our own hands might well die with us." Okay, it's a sentence you may have to read twice. But then you "get it," and you reflectively pause before continuing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seizing Your Divine Moment
This book is not one to be read thru quickly. It's like fine food, rich chocolate or good wine, take your time, savor every morsel. Read it , read it and read it again, taking in the benefits of it wisdom. Some time this book is exilerating, sometimes it's scarrey, but it always blesses when you listen to it and move on it. It could be your "Divine Moment" when you pick this book up and start the journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Old Testament
This is an invaluable guide to assist in understanding the Old Testament. The author provides important historical background to help the reader understand what the original authors/compilers were trying to say.I am currently using this text for my 1st year Education for Ministry class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
I have had a copy of the 3rd edition, which I have found truly helpful in understanding the OT in the context of the faith of the people. The material added in this edition makes the text even more useful.I highly recommend this to any serious student of the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fleshes out the Bible
No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried.Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light.Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors.Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them."Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. ... This is a wonderful text, incredibly useful.
5-0 out of 5 stars The sequel is great, too.
This is a really good intro to the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Clear, simple, and biblically solid.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
How to Get Into the Bible is a wonderfully laid out book that really brings the messages of the Bible home. Each book of the Bible is reviewed. Timelines and maps of the surrounding areas, found in the first page or so of each review, help the reader keep straight complicated chronological and geographical data. Also at the end of each review is the encore section. This tells the reader where they can find similar material in other books of the Bible. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Creative sermon spark-ers
Because the parables are stories with the kind of twist that can completely undo our usual ways of living our lives, I appreciated Pastor Kalas' attempt to tell us the story of these stories from a fresh angle. The 12 chapters in this volume are basically sermons. This, in fact, is the value of the book.If you are a pastor who has gotten a little too predictable in the way you create messages, this book will help you climb outside the 3 alliterated points box in a thoughtful, application-focused way.
4-0 out of 5 stars An easy read and study
This book offers an easy read and a great study. The book allows you to think of other perspectives, and is great at breaking the uniformite so many were raised to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Look at the Parables
With so many different books written about the parables, Kalas takes the reader on a lesser travelled route.Have you ever wondered what we can learn from the victim in the story of the Good Samaritan?Have you ever realized how many times the parables end with a joyous celebration?Have you ever asked what if God threw a party and no one came? If you have never considered any of thse questions, but find them to be intriquing, then definitly pick up this book and prepare yourself for a strong, thought-provoking set of studies.I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a refreshing take on learning new insights into the parables. ... Editorial Review

At a time when conflicts among three of the world's majorreligions--Islam, Judaism, and Christianity--are in the global spotlight, Bruce Feiler offers a stunning biography of the one man who unites all three religions: Abraham. "The most mesmerizing story of Abraham's life--his offering a son to God--plays a pivotal role in the holiest week of the Christian year, at Easter," writes Feiler. "The story is recited at the start of the holiest fortnight in Judaism, on Rosh Hashanah. The episode inspires the holiest day in Islam, 'Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting quick read
How do you write a 226-page book covering someone whom we have very little historical knowledge about?Put a lot of space between the lines, and fill in the gaps with long, superfluous descriptions of what the weather was like the day you were doing your research, and you can stretch it out to 226 pages.Yes, the content of this book is quite thin, stretched out to needless length. But fortunately, it's an easy read, so it goes fast even though you do have to wade through some of those verbose setting-the-mood descriptions.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
As a Christian I am interested in the phenomenon of Abraham as the progenitor of three of the main religions on earth. Of particular interest was the portrayal of this character through the lenses of the two other belief systems that I am not so familiar with. In an easy to read format this is at once a book for the curious without the need for serious scholarship, and will therefore be appealing to a wide readership. Coupled with this is the current apetite throughout the world to understand better the problems of the middle-east and also the clarion-call for religious tolerance and reconciliation. All of this may be found in this book which will therefore guarantee its success as a money spinner.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB, BALANCED REVIEW OF THE NEW TESTAMENT DATA
This book is wonderful! After studying dozens of texts about the origins and modern historical analyses of the New Testament canon--ranging from Helmut Koester's Ancient Christian Gospels to Walter Bauer, Elaine Pagels, and Bart Ehrman's positivistic polemics--I finally found this book.I am a scientist (physician) and have not had the benefit of a seminary education, so I should, perhaps, have started here. The book presents thorough, well-reasoned critiques of the data and conflicting theories about the origin and significance of the entire New Testament canon, book by book.It contains ample references to the the key research and publications on various subjects, somewhat like a good scientific or medical review article. This was a very welcome contrast to the popular publications of Bart Ehrman, which typically reference only his own biased writings on any particular subject. My only criticism of this excellent text is that it gives short shrift to the history and profound exegesis of the Eastern Orthodox Church Fathers; viz. St. John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, and others. In the Orthodox tradition, we tend to view theology as a "fabric woven from on high," including revelations in the post-Apostolic era to those saints who have achieved "theosis," direct contemplation of the Divine mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction
As others have noted, this NT Introduction is a standard introductory text from an evangelical perspective. In this updated version, Carson and Moo add some good stuff on canonicity that was not part of the original Carson/Moo/Morris edition. Most of the remaining material is similar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Provocative
In this new edition of Intro to the NT Carson and Moo have significantly improved the work they initially published with Leon Morris (who has since passed away). The chapters are reorganized, the margins are wider, and the material has expanded to include the contribution of works published since the first edition.Having used both editions for coursework and personal study, I find the second edition far superior. While the layout of the first edition was doable, the second is much roomier and suitable for study.More than all these considerations, the authors superbly point the reader to Christ, to become like him.I have been challenged not only academically as I've read this work, I have been also been convicted spiritually. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening
This is the best commentary, for lack of a better term, on the 23rd Psalm you will find anywhere. This is not a typical commentary in that it discusses this doctrine and that doctrine, providing scripture proofs, presenting arguments, etc.. Rather it is an instruction book about sheep, shepherds, and the work of a shepherd, and when you understand that, the 23rd Psalm comes alive like never before. This will also give more meaning to many of the teachings of Jesus.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good look at the Good Shepherd
Phillip Keller worked for eight years as a sheep owner and sheep rancher. In addition to that, he served as the lay pastor (shepherd) of a community church, spending time feeding and leading that flock of people for several months. Consequently, Phillip Keller is intimately acquainted through first hand experience with the life of a shepherd. This personal experience in shepherding manifests itself in his tremendous insights into the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. This book definitely gave me an increased understanding of a Shepherd's work. This book gave me an even greater appreciation for my Shepherd and it encouraged me to an even greater faith in God's wisdom and ways. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Wouldn't Be Without This Concordance
In my opinion "The "Strong's Concordance" is the best concordance on the market. It works best with either the "King James" or "New King James" Versions of the Bible. Loving to stday Scripture and write I have many referance books. I use my "Strong's Concordance" and my "American Dictionary of the Enligh Language: Noah Webster's 1828 Edition" more than all the rest of my referance books put together. The Concordance's Greek and Hebrew Dictionary's are a faantastic aid to Scripture study. Along with my 1928 Webster's Dictionary, I use them constantly. The "Strongest Strongs" is the edition I own and highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Could Only Buy One Book On Revelation
If you could only buy one book On Revelation, this would be it. I have about 30 titles and this one is the best. It is so even handed that I am still not sure what the author's views are. The formatting of the book allows a quick understanding of the 4 major ways of interpreting Revelation. For example, if you want to know what the Mark of the Beast -666- is all about you go to the commentary and read the section on 666 in each column and in a very short time frame you have everything you need at a preliminary level, and most of us on this subject will never get past that level!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Organization
REVELATION: FOUR VIEWS: A PARALLEL COMMENTARY by Steve Gregg was a blessing in my study of the Book of Revelation. He has presented four major views of the interpretation of Revelation: (1) Historicist, (2) Preterist, (3) Futurist, and (4) Spiritual. He has covered each group's beliefs in a format that sets them out side by side in four columns on the two page spread. This makes it very easy to compare.Every verse in Revelation(usually a group of verses at a time) is explained in the light of the four different views.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Not the most practical or the most simple, but the most scholarly"
If you want a thorough study of the major views of Revelation, there is no finer book on the subject. If you want a commentary on Revelation, this is not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but uneven
Bart Ehrman's bibliography includes some thoughtful and accessible work on the diversity present in early Christianity, particularly his duel "Lost Christianities" and "Lost Scriptures."While these books made him popular, his critical work reviewing the many absurdities of Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code" -- "Truth and Fiction in the Da Vinci Code" -- launched him into a truly popular sensation. That is all to the good.Professor Ehrman's scholarship is generally excellent and he offers readers many helpful insights into an important topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars I appreciate objective history
Peter, Paul, & Mary Magdalene is the fourth of Bart Ehrman's books that I've read.I have hungered a long time for a unbiased scholarly examination of Jesus and the early church.Dr. Ehrman seems to provide that in his books.Peter, Paul, & Mary Magdalene is a brilliant investigation of the lives of three of the Church's most prominent figures and the many, many rumors, and even doctrines that that have grown up around them. This book helps to clearify their lives.I highly recommend this book to all who want to know Church history written without a doctrinal agenda to support.

1-0 out of 5 stars Historically Inaccurate, Highly Polemical Treatise
In his most recent attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Da Vinci Code, Bart Ehrman presents Peter, Paul, and Mary Magdalene. Most of the Amazon reviewers of the book seem unaware that the book is a skillfully disguised anti-Christian polemic--in the Tubingen tradition--which is based upon a number of historically and philosophically flawed assumptions.I mention this at the outset because so many reviewers continue to praise Ehrman for his objective historical scholarship and lack of theological bias. This is laughable. He is about as theologically unbiased as John Gager, Elaine Pagels, and the other post-Protestant, anti-Christians of the PTS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired
I have used the book 3 times with 3 different groups and they have all really got a lot out of the study!

5-0 out of 5 stars Catholic guidance for wives and mothers
Easy to read, very interesting, good down-to-earth advice.
3-0 out of 5 stars good but something's lacking
The women's group in our parish has been using this book for the past several months. There is much that is good in it and it is solidly Catholic. But I don't think it "hits the mark" for the majority of faithful Catholic women today, that is those who do not fit the model of Mrs. Martin. The main point of disparity is that most Catholic women do not have faithful Catholic husbands, like Mrs. Martin does, who function as the spiritual heads of the households. So much in this book is founded on the premise that they do.

I [the Lord] will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:195-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most encouraging book I have read in years
I received this book last week as encouragement from a friend. While I have yet to overcome the current obstacles in my own life, I am reassured and even confident that God is in control.God will be glorified! While I have been involved in church and even ministry most of my life, the simplicity of the Israelites' story and the profound truths the author has pointed out firmly establish why I can have hope as a Christian. The truths about God's love and care have never been clearer or more meaningful to me as the author directs me to reflect on God's providence for His own. I have been so blessed by this book that I came to this website to see about getting multiple copies through which I may encourage others! As my friend wrote wrote, "May the Holy Spirit use this humble book to encourage you and give you greater faith and hope for the future - we know, because God cannot lie - that His plans for us are only good!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A different view of Noah's Ark
Until I had read this book the cute versions of Noah's Ark were my only image of this story despite having read the Bible's precise description many times. This amazing book has changed all that. I was fascinated to read and see that the exact dimensions of the ark, make it similiar to a box not a boat. It is not self propelled, but made to keep its passengers safe in the most severe conditions. The drawings are magnificent, and the story fresh and insightful. The only part I question is just how developed society was before the flood. Still, I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars in reply to Rohan L. Ebanks "Mr. Skeptic" review
First of all...I appreciate your review and respect your honesty. I do wonder however how much of the bible you have actually read? Mr. Skeptic...I too at one time was skeptical of many bible stories. I wanted to pick and choose what I actually believed to be real. For a time I believed I was right. But then some amazing things happened in my life. I began reading the bible and realized that the bible was full of extraordinary stories. I tried to prove the stories were bogus. The more I tried, the more I realized they couldn't be. I became angry. Until one day I said to myself...why am I so angry? I didn't even know why. But anyway, enough about me. If you want to be the ultimate skeptic to the story of Noah, you have to read the story of Noah in the bible (Genesis 5:29-9:17). I also suggest learning all the arguments and see how they are defended in the book "The Genesis Flood: The Biblical Record and Its Scientific Implications"

1-0 out of 5 stars Blindly obey such a destructive Tyrant? Do him one better ...
Had Noah possessed the gift of foreseeing the future, there is not a doubt in the world he would have scuttled the ark.

Editorial Review

In this extended reflection on the life of David, drawn from the accounts in the two books of Samuel and from the Psalms, author and self-described Sunday school teacher Beth Moore translates into plain and direct language the message she finds in this story of a shepherd boy who is chosen as God's own servant. Moore approaches these texts not as a scholar but as a believer. As the inclusion of review questions would suggest, her interest here is less historical and more immediately pragmatic: she wishes to see what David's life has to say to followers of Christ. Her reading is personal, yet supported by a study of the Hebrew and Greek texts--above all, the notes to the book suggest, through a number of Bible dictionaries and concordances. While apparently not well-versed in English poetry (she calls John Dryden a 16th-century philosopher when most would call him a 17th-century poet), the real appeal of the book for many will lie in its approachable style: the writing is direct, personal, and honest. She writes, she tells people, as a "regular" person who says, "I don't make Christ part of my life; He is my life." Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Focused Study
Beth Moore chose to delve into the life and times of David, a mere shepherd boy who was chosen to be the leader of Israel. In A HEART LIKE HIS, Moore poses the practical questions as to how a person can be forgiven and restored after sin?How a person can continue to be faithful when nothing seems to be going his way?How can a person find God when feeling lonely? How important is God's influence on our family?
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Treatment of David's Life!
A few years ago the women's Bible study in my church went through the video version of "A Heart Like His."I heard glowing reviews from one lady after another, speaking of how pertinent and powerful the material was.Unfortunately, it was then geared exclusively to women, so I never watched the videos myself.5-0 out of 5 stars A moving, humorous, tearful journey through David's life
Beth's book is a wonderfully written journey through the life of a man who sought God's own heart. She fluctuates between humorous observations on the actions of the Biblical characters I thought I knew so well, andtouching parallels to the life of the ultimate "Son of Man". This book held me captivated from the introduction to the final period.Ilook forward to more books like this from Beth. ... Read more
