4-0 out of 5 stars An Efficient Reader
I did my graduate degree in NT Greek and I found this text to be a great help. A person, however, should not make this his or her primary Greek text. Use this along with your NA27 or UBS4.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
First, I love this book. Second, I am probably not adding much new information to previous reviews, but I think that it is worth reiterating what they have said.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good concept; terrible font
I read the greek text for pleasure. I wanted to stretch myself and stop cheating with my interlinear, so I got this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Personal attacks are not science
Chapters 4 and 5 in this book are very interesting, a good survey of archaeology in Israel. The preceeding 100 pages amount to little more than scathing personal attacks on other researchers coupled with some brief and basic arcaological theory. Though it is tempting to get into the post-modernism bash, the personal attacks exhibited on those researchers are in poor taste. And I'm not downplaying this, he lists their names and then gives several paragraphs explaning why their biases prevent them from being good scholars. I sincerely hope this isn't reflective of archaeological scholarship in general. From other books I've read (Finkelstein, Mazar, Stern, and Cline), I've noticed that Dever is the only one to resort to personal attacks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.
While the polemic against the minimalists gets a little excessive at times, I have to say that it is necessary, as they are very vocal these days. There is no need to debate fundamentalists because they've made up their mind already (as Michael Freeman's review shows).
5-0 out of 5 stars A prize-winner!
Dever deserves a blue ribbon for the most cumbersome title in many years. He should also garner an award for his blistering assessment of "postmodern" historians. While he has contested "minimalist" academics elsewhere, this book is an excellent compendium of the issues and evidence regarding the historical validity of the Hebrew Bible.Although the arena of biblical history is small, the issues dealt with are important. His conclusions will have lasting impact not only in biblical history, but archaeology and other disciplines.Although a serious subject, Dever's piercing wit keeps this book a lively and captivating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
For any woman dealing with the shame of a past abortion this is the most powerful study I have ever taken. Words cannot express the freedom that comes from this book.

Even if the issue of abortion was ommitted, this study is the best I have ever done.Scriptures on anger, forgiveness and depression were compiled in such an order that actual healing took place.Doctrinal truths were revealed in ways that I had never seen before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to understand this psalm
If you believe in God from a Christian or Jew perspective, you can be enlightened and delighted with this thorough explanation of the psalm and benefit from taking the posture the psalmist(s) had when writing it.I have listened to this psalm throughout my whole life and never had the opportunity to fully see all that may be found in its deep meaning. It is amazing all can be expanded from these simple phrases.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book to reread frequently
One of the most wonderful things about Rabbi Kushner's writings is that he isn't afraid to tackle the hard questions. If we indeed have a Shepherd, why isn't He doing a better job?To this question, Kushner says, "the psalmist would teach us to see the world, without illusions that nothing bad will ever happen, but without the fear that we will be utterly destroy This is a lovely book full of hope and wisdom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deep and heartfelt insights
I wasn't expecting much from this book when I picked it up. Beloved though its subject might be, how much can you say about a 15-line bit of verse - the 23rd Psalm ? But Rabbi Harold Kushner uses his compassion and intellect to unpack each line. Though informed by scholarship, this is not a dry scholarly exercise. Kushner uses each line as jumping-off point for a sermon on human v. divine nature, arguing that the heart of faith is not just believing in God, or thinking that God will fix our problems, but in feeling the assurance that God is present and hears us. To Kushner, comfort comes not from an assurance that God will save us from evil, but that with God we are never alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I already loved Carolyn Custis James's writing after I read, "When Life and Beliefs Collide." (In fact, I require it in a seminary class I teach.) But after reading "Lost Women of the Bible" I'm convinced she is one of the most important voices in Christendom today. Through James's exporation of Esther, whom God used to rescue His people from genocide, we learn that God's design for woman is not to "be rescued by men" (as is often taught), but rather to partner with them. Through Tamar we see that a woman considered one of the bad girls of the Bible is actually a shining example of loyal love. James guides the reader to look afresh at these and other key Bible characters. In the process she helps both women and men see who God made them to be and how they are designed to interact. Hers is an important message for any era.
5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book
What an amazing read!Very thought provoking and enjoyable. Carolyn did an excellant job with her research into biblical times and even more so at using the choices of their lives to impact the lives that we live today.Definately one of the better books that I've read. Now I will have to get her other book, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A super book
This little gem of a book has such clarity and liveliness that I would not hesitate to put it into the hands of a teen; at the same time, it contains such significant theological insights that it also belongs in the hands of clergy and those in professional ministry. And women of all ages who are thirsting for strong biblical role models will indeed find the "strength and significance" James promises in her sub-title.

4-0 out of 5 stars a little odd, but quite useful
I was a good bit confused when I saw that Cliffs Notes had published a Notes on, of all things, the Bible.I mean, coming from someone who reads their Bible often, I never thought someone would need a copy of the Notes to understand the Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a reprieve for the unremitting boredom
Wow, I really have to say--this is one Cliffs Notes that I can appreciate. It actually has a purpose. This is the perfect book for those of us who are forced by parents and sunday school teachers to read the Bible on penalty of everlasting suffering and torment. I wish this was available when I was growing up...it is the perfect tool to decieve those that would try to force us to read the incomphrensible gibberish that is the Bible. And frankly rounding out at just under 100 pages, I can say that this is about as much of the Bible that I can bear. Easy to read and understand and without the mind-altering, brainwashing side affects. A+, highly recommended!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Gospels Compared
Gospel Parallels is a serious work indexing and comparing the first three New Testament books (Matthew, Mark and Luke) so that those interested in the study of the Gospels can see exactly the similarities and discrepancies in the stories. 4-0 out of 5 stars Let The Reader Decide
In *Gospel Parallels*, Burton Throckmorton lays out the "synoptic gospels" side by side and lets the gospels speak for themselves. I think that any objective reader can easily see the differences between the gospels and gain insight into their development over time. Of particular note is how "Matthew" embellishes what "Mark" wrote. For example, if Mark says that one demoniac was healed (5:1-20), Matthew says that two were healed (8:28-34). Mark says that after Jesus cursed the fig tree, the disciples noticed the NEXT MORNING that it was withered (11:12-19); Matthew says that the tree withered "at once" (21:18-22). Only Matthew has an earthquake occur at Jesus' resurrection; has dead "saints" arise at Jesus' crucifixion and appear to others after the resurrection. The layout of the book also allows for easier identification of the "Q" material, the hypothetical source from which Matthew and Luke derived information not found in Mark. This book makes a good companion for Bishop Spong's books such as *Resurrection: Myth or Reality* and *Why Christianity Must Change or Die*, both of which detail the progression of development in the gospels. I also recommend Andrew D. Benson's *The Origins of Christianity and the Bible*.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's as good as you make it
This is a tool, and as every tool it will be only as good as the user. the best part is the Index, which allows the reader to have the wider spectrum all at once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars let my people go - all of them
Reading through the many wonderful reviews here, one gets the picture of what it is with this book: love it or hate it, believer or skeptic, even telling people the gist of the thesis and the story (the book is magnificently both), this work never fails to evoke a strong reaction.Look at the reviews. What is evident is that the book is truly provocative -rare for any book - no less a slight, speculative work of less than 200 pages, written somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century.Who would really care? But as you can see from this representative sample, people do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holds Such a Place in My Heart
This NIV study Bible has been such a precious wonderful tool that God has used in my life to sanctify me with his Word. The NIV translation itself is such a smooth and easy read without going too far toward the paraphrase direction like some modern translations are prone to do. In speaking about the study notes, we must always keep in mind that they are not infallible, but in the case of this particular Bible, the notes are so utterly helpful in understanding the text. This is the primary Bible I use when conducting personal and group Bible study. I think that every Christian in the english speaking world would do good to get one of these Bibles. Praise the Lord for an easy to understand yet true-to-the-text study Bible! Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study Bible
This is an excellent study Bible, with easy to read and understand notes on just about every passage in the Bible. While I prefer the NKJV, the NIV is very easy to read and understand. An exceelent addition to your library!

5-0 out of 5 stars NIV does it again.
I've been using this study bible since the first copies came off the press.I have recommended it to many Christains and even given my older copies to those who could use them. This revision continues the same standard of presentation, notes to help one read and understand the word of God as you go along.Charts, maps, diagrams, chronologies, illustrations, a subject listing, concordance and all within this 2200 page bible.I prefer the standard size as the print is readable and clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's great -- also charming, enchanting, a delight
Having studied and been fascinated by the Bible story, I wanted a more in-depth treatment, and read this work, expecting insights from a modern perspective. Certainly, I got what I expected, but also something more: a gripping work of transcendent lyricism, and riveting reading for its many hundreds of pages. Mann gives his characters both monumental depth and thoroughly human qualities, so that you feel that you both know them and are in awe of them. You empathize at the recognizability of their situations, yet you gain so much insight and perspective into a past world and emerging religion. I found the book highly readable, but even for those who find it tough going at first, I recommend staying the course, for one of the most rewarding reading experiences I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed fiction, in any century
Anyone who has read my Listmania "Escape Mass Market Fiction"knows that I touted this novel (tertrology actually) as having ".... the most exquisite language since Shakespeare". But it is truly beyond that. After 30 years and over 3,000 books read I can affirm that there simply has been no greater work of fiction produced in any century by man or woman. One of the reviewers below was dead-on saying you keep wanting to go back and reread the last 20 pages you managed to finish just to savor the experience. Original editions are a little rare and expensive, but, like any treasure, it's rewards are transcendental, and once read, you can consider yourself part ofthe most esoteric world of the true literati. NOTE-- Beginners who are easily scared off and prefer to sample first might want to skip the Preludes and go straight to the main chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars give Machen a run for his money
This is different, not better or worse, than Machen's classic "New Testament Greek for Beginners."Whereas Machen is simple, systematic, and small, Mounce is wordy, complicated, and bulky (you need a separate work book for the exercises.)To learn Greek, you need both Machen AND Mounce.
5-0 out of 5 stars Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar
One of the most helpful textbooks I've ever used.Multiple tools for learning really enhance the experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Better than Average
This is one of the Lifeguide Bible Studies, which is generally a good small group study series. My former Sunday School class liked the Lifeguide format and consequently used many of the guides. So I have first-hand experience, in an actual classroom setting, using many of the books in this series.
