5-0 out of 5 stars An very valuable study help!
I am going through "The Basics of Biblical Greek" textbook on my own, and was about half way through before I purchased the workbook to go along with it. The workbook has been an invaluable aid to my study of Greek! I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the exercises provided in the workbook, which have really helped to cement all that I had already learned in the textbook. I highly recommend this and any other books/workbooks by Bill Mounce! His approach to learning Biblical Greek is quickly becoming the new standard in many colleges and seminaries across the country! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Study on the life and influence of Paul
If you are looking for a definitive study of the life of Paul, this would be a good place to start.Beth Moore begins by reconstructing what Paul's early life must have been like, based on studies of Jewish life in those times. She then proceeds to the Biblical accounts in Acts which describe his conversion, and subsequent ministry. She then proceeds to the letters Paul wrote to his disciples, such as Timothy.Moore teaches us what a truly inspiring figure Paul is and applies his example of faithfulness into what God would have us aspire to today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome writer
I first became aware of the vibrancy of Beth Moore's teachings at my church's women's group. What an awesome teacher of God's word she is,and this book did not disappoint me.Beth takes a look at the life of Paul, from his birth, conversion from a zealous Jew to a humbled Christian, and the missionary journeys he undertook in Christ's name and brings them to life on these pages. She has a way of pondering aspects of the biblical narratives that really open one's eyes, and gives you a depth and breadth and taste of what life might have been like for the apostle Paul that one normally wouldn't realize, and then encourages and challenges us to live our lives for Christ in similar ways.I did not read this book in one sitting, but read a little every day, and came away delighted to have "tasted" each morsel she offered.I love Beth Moore's devotion to the Lord, and she has inspired me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Indeed a very good introduction
The author, a Catholic professor of "Sacred Scripture" specialised in the Old Testament (OT), reveals at the beginning his guiding principle, the instruction given by Pope Pius XII in his encyclical Divino Afflante Spiritu, i.e. accepting the OT as divine revelation yet taking into account these truths that can be deduced scholarly about the authors, the modes of writing...
5-0 out of 5 stars A good primer for an amateur theologian or beginning scholar.
A professor of mine assigned this book for a low-level theology class at a Jesuit university.I liked it so much that I decided to keep it rather than sell it back.I ended up having to buy a new copy because my father, an amateur theologian, decided to take mine after he flipped through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars something old, something new
Picture a handsome leather-bound volume with a column of attractively-set Hebrew text on the right side of each page and a superb English translation in very readable typeset on the left side. This is what you get in the two leather-bound versions of the 1999 Hebrew-English Bible published by the Jewish Publication Society. I own the large version for reading at home and a handly but vision-challenging small version for the road. I travel a lot and it goes with me on many of those trips.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tanakh as a textbook...
The JPS version of the Tanakh is one of my favorites. The style and translation make it easy to relate to and read without simplification or misinterpretation.I purchased this one due to the size of it and that the pages would lie flat when placed on a table. The paper is the fine tissue-like you would expect and the font is easy to read without being that huge large-print which makes it good for studying. That is why I would call this edition more of a textbook.I have a smaller version that I use outside the home also by JPS in a leather cover with tabs.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Jewish Translation in a long time.
This is one of the only translations of the Old Testament that gets the '70 weeks' spoken about in the Book of Daniel correctly translated. There are also many parts of this Old Testament Bible that clarifies things.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Opinion
Men are notoriously insensitive and frequently behave in ways demeaning to women.I know this to be true because I'm describing myself. This is why a femanist will never be convicted with such a book.By means of argument, reason, and so-called "legalism", you can't drive a woman to believe in God-endorsed gender roles when excluding love.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by the decision to reissue without rewriting
This CBMW book advocates a He Leads/She Submits model of Christian marriage.I am disappointed by the decision to reissue the book without responding to Dr. Sarah Sumner's 2003 critique of this model in her book, Men, Women and the Church.Sumner points out that a wife's submission should be understood in the context of her husband's sacrifice, not his leadership.Additionally, it is not correct to define headship as leadership.Headship is a metaphor. While leadership may well be an important aspect of headship, leadership does not capture other facets of the metaphor and misses the organic unity implied by the head/body pairing. He leads/She submits alters the Bible's head/body and sacrifice/submit pairings and is a distortion of the Biblical marriage model.Sumner's arguments ring true to me, based both on my reading of the Biblical texts and my childhood experiences in a fundamentalist Baptist church.I am disappointed that CBMW has chosen to ignore Sumner's work, as opposed to either refuting her critique or acknowledging the error in their model.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Equality Here
The authors claim this book is a response to the movement of feminism, but I think it's a response to any woman who dares seek equality with a man or a place of leadership. This is the second time I've seen a male writer try to place women beneath men while at the same time claiming to believe in equality. Honestly, who do they think they're fooling? The statement that "men and women are created equally, but God made man the head and woman the helper" is one of the most self-contradicting statements I've ever seen. If Eve was made to be a helper, she had a very small role in life indeed. In fact, she would be a Stepford Wife more than anything else. I'm not being sarcastic here; for those of you who don't know, a Stepford Wife is a robot made by a husband who isn't satisfied with a regular woman with a strong mind and opinions; her sole purpose is to serve, and that very strongly resembles what this book describes as a woman's role. As I read their words, I could not believe the arrogant pride of these authors, believing themselves to be holy men and preaching to women from their self-appointed thrones that we can never and should never be on the same level as they are. Christ is higher than all of us, but He pulled people up beside Him instead of shoving them down. He also elevated women as well as men, and yet these authors are trying to say that women were created merely to serve just because we have wombs? How does that make us inferior leaders to men? This is not Christianity, folks, or even logical thinking. If you want proof to overthrow these authors' claims, simply read the Bible! In the Bible, it was women who Christ first revealed Himself to after His resurrection and women who He entrusted with the news of His resurrection. The Apostle Paul even asked women to pray and prophesy in his church. Did I mention Deborah, who taught many men? The Bible hardly has silent women, does it? With this knowledge, no one can accurately claim that God meant for men to be teachers and women to be silent; that idea is simply, blatantly untrue. You can NOT tell a woman she was made to serve and can never lead just because she's a woman and then attempt to label yourself a Christian. We are all servants to Christ; this is not a matter of sex. God designed men and women to co-exist and rule Eden in equality; it was not until after the Fall that man, not God, designed a flawed heirarchy of men over women. Please don't be mislead by this book; it attempts to do something much more than provide relief from the Feminist movement. Imbalance of power in either sex is bad; radical feminism is one end of the spectrum and books like this are the other. Either way, equality and harmony are lost. The only way this book could possibly be useful in a healthy way to any person would be if it were used as either a reference to old-fashioned thinking or a guide on how NOT to treat and regard women. As a Godly woman, I have every intention of being a servant to Christ and no intention of doing so beneath men. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good guide on spiritual warfare
Kay Arthur deftly tackles a topic that not all churches and ministers will discuss: spiritual warfare. That this warfare is all around us, in many of the day-to-day situations we face, is a fact, and Arthur draws constantly and completely from Scripture to arm her reader for battle. The book, which is designed to be an 11-week study but can be read at your own pace, offers daily readings. Most days require the reader to look up and examine more closely specific Scriptural verses. Arthur does a good job of digging into the "evidence" in God's Word for points that she makes; everything is adequately supported in Scripture. What we found most interesting were the real-life stories she quotes from people she's known. Some are rather disturbing, but we must open our eyes to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A place for warriors in the body of Christ
Ms. Arthur is an anointed teacher who is helping this reader discover the "Battle," who is battling whom, why there is a battle, and the armor Jesus left for us to gird ourselves with to effectively fight the oneJesus defeated on the Cross. Satan's deceptions and weapons seemed muchstronger, much more fearful before I entered this thought-provoking biblestudy that is leading me step-by-step to a realization of just what Jesushas already done for us. Ms. Arthur's teaching insist's the student think, yet offers steady help along the way as she builds upon knowledge gainedchapter by chapter. If you're ready to work at acquiring the know-how tofind life beyond circumstance and above defeat while learning more aboutscriptures to use the way Jesus defeated Satan during His temptations, thisBible Study re: warfare is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Thought Provoking -- Helps Develop One's Insights
Kay Arthur truly has a heart for God.And He has blessed her (and us) by creating within her heart a love for us members of Christ's body.Through that love, she has developed a wonderful guide that teachs us how to searchthe scriptures for answers.Furthermore, rather than present a list of herown personal interpretations, she presents scriptures, asks us questionsabout them, and advises us to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit while westruggle with the questions. So it is really the Holy Spirit who teachsus. But Kay provides the vehicle for the planned trip.I highly recommendthis book to anyone who wants to learn how to "be strong in theLord" so that they may be able to "stand firm in the evilday". 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible Study
Our women's group have gone through quite a few studies and this material is absolutely the best we have come across. It has a wealth of useful information in the back and is designed to get a group to discuss and confirm that God's word is applicable in the lives of women today. We have seen remarkable growth in our class by both numbers and spiritually.

4-0 out of 5 stars Women of the Bible
After personally using the companion devotional book last year, I recommended that our ladies' Sunday School class try this workbook in between other studies.Since each week focuses on a different woman, we can easily continue later with the following chapter. So far, the response has been excellent. The questions provoke personal comments from the whole group, although occassionally I find the queries to be oversimplified.Theaccompanying history and scriptures show that much study went into this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Results
This product was ordered for our Women's Fellowship, and the results have been way above expectations. The women's group has open up and started sharing and caring with more vitality than ever before. I can't say the book has done anything, but it sure was used by the Spirit of Jesus to cause them to open up to each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes it is Encouraging
I really enjoyed the outline of this study guide. It sparked so much conversation. Nicole Johnson writes, 'How can we encourage someone else when we feel so discouraged? Our temptation is to stand in the corner of the encouragement party. Just hang around the edges and observe everyone else having a good time. But that never works. It's not till we start throwing the confetti on others that we realize how much is landing on us! We can encourage others from the overflow of God's encouragement to us.' This work book did just that. Showed us how to encourage one another in a very practicle way!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great place to start!
There are many books out there that try to demonstrate the reliability of the New Testement writtings. This is the best one I've read so far.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, low-key scholarly comparison of NT with other documents
F.F. Bruce was a renowned Greek scholar and examines the New Testament using the same criteria as one would apply to other books of antiquity. The result is a low-key, irenic and very convincing demonstration that it is quite tenable and logical to regard the New Testament as a fundamentally historical document. This is an excellent apologic text to give to a thoughtful non-Christian.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC ON THE RELIABILITY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT TEXT
With all the hype and hysteria currently surrounding "The DaVinci Code", it's good to hear from a true academic whose life's work has been focused around the New Testament and the documents that were incorporated into the canon we cherish today as inspired.

Bauckham offers the interested reader relentless and inspiring insights into the Theology of this often misunderstood New Testament book.I found I had to put down the highlighter because I was highlighting entire pages. This book is excellent for both the serious student as well as the everyday reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on the subject
I have read this book at least five times and will read it again, because it is quite simply the best read on the subject. It is not a verse by verse commentary, but a theological commentary that is reader friendly, but one recognizes the depth of research and understanding of history that Bauckham pours into this book.He has another book called The Climax of Prophecy that carries much of the same subject matter, but this one is an easier read. This book completely changed my thinking on the book of Revelation.I recommend this book to anyone looking for a serious approach to Revelation and not the canned stuff that you get from the Left Behind series. This book will leave you hoping for Bauckham to write a verse by verse commentary on Revelation.Until he does read Craig Koester's book Revelation and The End of All Things along with this book.Bauckham makes sense of the 144,000, the two witnesses, the goal of history and how the book centers around the worship of God and Christ.I recommend this book for everybody from scholar on down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
Bauckham's work here is a fresh of breath air in the midst of a lot of choking misunderstanding. He reads Revelation appropriately in context while recognizing the highly phenomenal language of apocalyptic literature. One of the monumental strengths of this book is the way that Bauckham seamlessly weaves theology and exegesis. He explains the complexities and intricacies of the book contextually and then develops an extremely clear theology. In addition, Bauckham's treatment of Revelation in relation to the OT is clear and indispensable to really understand this book. He allows the OT scriptures to form the paradigm from which he understands John's language, imagery, even his prophetic role. With imaginative application of a paradigm-shifting book, Bauckham's work must be read and continually referred to in order to understand the richness of such a beautiful, and so often misunderstood book. Bauckham is a scholar of the highest rank, and yet his writing is both engaging and accessible. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to seriously understand Revelation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to really begin your prayer time
I really enjoyed this book.It really helped me in worshiping in my prayer time.It was a real help in overcoming a dry time in my relationship with the Lord.I would and have recommended this book to friends.I have even given them away because it was so helpful to me.My only concern with the book is that the scriptures are not word for word. They have been altered slightly to make them more personal in nature.ALthough this can be helpful it is also a reason for caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars great, highly recommended devotional prayer book
this is great.i read from it every morning.i bought copies for friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peerless
I have been a committed Christian for 35 years and have worked for one of the all-time great devotional writers (Selwyn Hughes of "Every Day with Jesus" fame), so I'm not easily impressed by devotional material; but this time, the hype is true!

5-0 out of 5 stars His book
Good book for research, but by itself more a statement of the man who put it together..
4-0 out of 5 stars Jefferson was ahead of his time
This book is an editing of what Thomas Jefferson thought was the real truth buried in the Gospels. He deleted the miracles, resurrection and any strange theological statements he felt was placed in Jesus's mouth at a later date. He was like the Jesus Seminar of the 1800's. I have nothing but respect for Jefferson on having the guts in his time to think for himself and see the logical fallacies in believing in the super natural aspects of the gospels. In reading this I see a lot of similarities to the Gospel of Thomas found at Nag Hammadi in 1946. Jefferson would have been pleased. He searched the Gospels for the "GEMS" the real Jesus spoke and found them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
To avoid trying to be inspirational, let me just say this book, along with Norman Thomas Remick's book on Jefferson's secular thinking, "West Point: Thomas Jefferson: Character..." combine to bring the heart and mind of Thomas Jefferson into clear focus, in spite of the fact others still like to portray him to be as mysterious as a sphinx. All of the "Jefferson Bible" books are a must read, but this one I felt was particularly well done. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good... but...
The book is overall very good quality inside and out. It self-proclaims that it is MORE "accurate, up-to-date, complete numbering system, and user-friendly" than Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary. My review is mixed, even though overall I do like the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hebrew Bible as a Burdensome Source for Israel's History

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening
The book is aimed at looking for archaeological evidence to the stories told in the bible. The conclusions that the authors reach are sometimes controversial due to lack of archaeological evidence to support such stories. One can still claim that even though evidence is not found to support certain stories, there is no conclusive assuranec that those events never took place (even though the authors offer findings that contradict certain biblical claims). However, the authors' perspective is based on scientific findings that are certainly eye opening. Due to the challenge of finding conclusive evidence when researching antiquity, much of the authors' findings cannot be viewed as facts, rather, are open for interpretation by the reader. The authors also offer different opinions of other historians and archaeologists, which strengthens the notion that much of the distant past is quite unclear and open for interpretation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All
This book should be in the libraries of all serious students of religion and the Bible. There were points made and supported by archeology that might make the believers of an inerrant Bible think. The authors did not intend to change a persons faith only to point out the Biblical stories may be more allegory than historical.E.g., they propose the early writings of the OT were written c. 700 BCE.They also suggest the early Israelites were probably Canaanites. The points are supported by archaeological studies that may be more academic than the casual reader comprehends but doesn't burden the reading for the casual reader.I suggest this book will be a standard along with Friedman's "Who Wrote the Bible." ...
