1-0 out of 5 stars Poor study material
I have been part of many women's Bible studies in my life. This is definitely not one I would recommend.Although you were asked to look up many verses they didn't fit together or lead you to any conclusions.Verses also didn't really say what the author wanted them to say.Overall, very shallow. There are many studies out there that are of MUCH better quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference tool!
This is a great tool to any serious or even casual student of the Bible. It is full of full-color photos of myriad items of interest, maps, charts, and historical excerpts of Biblical figures.5-0 out of 5 stars pleasant balance of text, photos. maps, and bible comments.
this is a worthy addition to any Bible scholars library

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid Bible reference for the casual Bible student.
This volume is a fine resource for the reader who wishes to delve a bit deeper into Biblical study, but feels intimidated by the commentaries published specifically for use by pastors and theologians. It's an easyread--two words one seldom associates with a reference book--beautifullyillustrated, with plenty of background information to give the biblicallychallenged a flavor for the times in which the Bible was written. I haverecommended this volume and its companion, Eerdmans Handbook to the Historyof Christianity, since their initial release.I continue to do so,especially with this more affordable paperback edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Volume.
It is a wonderful Volume that presents a fairer grasp and understanding of the fundamental principles behind the theological and Ecclesiastical approaches taken by the Jehovah's Witnesses throughout the world. It is useful to me in pointing out undeniable contradiction within this movement that serves me well in confronting and pulling down strongholds of false doctrines that serve to undermine the sacred, enshrined, inspired and true beliefs of God's most holy and divine word, the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light, while growing darkness all around the globe
In a period, that everybody is blinded by the promises of political, economical and religious leaders, a little group of bible examiners take their stand against godliness and hold firm in announcing a new kind of gouvernment, the one all the creation is waiting for; but now that the time has come, they show their thru face and reject the king and his kingdom, and they are even ready to kill his mesengers

5-0 out of 5 stars The Early Beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses
Charles T. Russell's famous bible study series that gave great impetus to the preaching work of Jehovah's Witnesses during the early days of their modern history in the late 19th and early 20th century.

If you love Beth Moore, you will not only have a compilation of some of the wonderful personal writings she has shared in her studies, but you will also learn more about Beth and the challenges she has faced in her life that has made her the inspired woman of God that she is today. God uses her mightily to minister to others, and her tender heart and love for God comes through so beautifully in this additional gift of creative writing and poetry. 4-0 out of 5 stars An important book
Peter Gomes loves the Bible and its principles. He does not necessarily love every passage and every precept. Many of us are in that boat. This book wades into the waters of biblical passages that some feel stigmatize women, gays, Jews (NT passages) and people of color. Gomes is left-of-center, but not too far left, and he's produced a valuable contribution to the debate/discussion around so many issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for its time
This book is one that we can turn to in fifty years to find out what we were thinking about at the end of the twentieth century. There have been few books that have ended up in this category, I don't mean best sellers (but many are) but works that make us take a good, hard look at society. This is a smart, thoughtful, and most important, non-condescending look at what it means to be a Christian in this age.I think if you are looking for answers in the book, there are very few, because it acknowledges the search for answers, not the answers.Read it for the wit, and the chance to know one of the great apologetics of our time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Theological Must

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool to study God's Word!
I have worn out my first copy of "The Living Insights" Bible by Charles Swindoll (Editor). It is printed in the NIV version and which makes the text easy to read. It has Book introductions, articles, that digdeep into the Christian faith and tear down any misconceptions one may haveabout doctrine. The Living Insights Bible contains character profiles ofboth well known and not so well known men and women of the Bible and makesthem real! It has charts and time lines to help you understand and see moreclearly when and where things happened.A few of my favorite things aboutthis Bible is that it contains section summaries and introduces not onlythe Book but chapters as well. Also, under many of scriptures Mr. Swindollrelates the passage in way it's easily understood in what he calls"Living Insights."The Living Insights Bible is an awesome toolto use to study God's Word to make it more real and personal and reallydevelop and deepen your relationship with the Lord! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, the Freedom...
I admit, Paul was not a particular favorite of mine when I first read his words about women. I've believed in equality between the sexes for a long time now, but it was not until I came across this book that I discovered that Paul may actually have agreed with me on several important points. Bristow, God bless him, is a pastor who dared to look beyond the degrading shroud several churches still throw on women and seek the truth that contradicted all he had been taught. This book wonderfully presents not only Paul's words in their original meaning (before all the mistranslations) but examines several sexist viewpoints on women that have been around for a long time and are revealed to actually be contradictory of each other. I cannot thank Bristow enough for his wonderfully refreshing and freeing book, which offers knowledge and evidence about equality ordained by God and will challenge any who still insist on keeping women under men. There are, sadly, still such people around; one person who claimed this book is false recommended almost every garbage book encouraging female spiritual bondage that I can think of and said that "obey still means obey" and "submit still means submit". Sure, unless "obey" was used only in mistranslation and never really applied to women in the first place. Also, Christ talks about MUTUAL submission between the sexes, so the argument that it's only for women falls flat on its face even without this book. I recommend this treasure to everyone! If you have never known how to accept Christ's gift of freedom and equality, this book can help you. Oh, and Paul...my apologies :)

5-0 out of 5 stars What Paul Really Said About Women
A somewhat ponderous read but packed with insight. Highly recommended to all.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
This is not a long book, but a refreshing view on something that has been held to be the truth for a long time.I like how he is not "stuck" on being right, and isnt full of himself insisting it to be so.He has one view of the word "kephale" that is an interesting read. One thing that needs to be done though, is not to get stuck on those verses that we all get stuck on.like the "have authority over a man" verse. There are other verses in the Bible that are not often discussed or pointed out that also wieghs on the side of equality for women.Like Junia being an Apostle.Does that not by default mean that she taught men?The Bible has been mostly translated until recently by those that assume that women are inferior to men, you can't exactly take those lenses off when doing your work.No matter what lenses you wear.I think that this book is a good starting point to those that want to study this issue extensively. Its a basic read and an easy one.If you want to get into it more, then try a new one called "Discovering Biblical Equality".And to be fair, the other side of the coin is "Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood."The truth is our experiences are subjective and both sides are convinced we are in the right. You must live with what you know.If you can live with and truly believe that women are not to teach men and are not equals and you are happy with that in your marriage and church... well more power to you.If you are not happy with the status quo, and its never felt right with your spirit, then exploring with an open mind is always a good thing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of God
I started to read this book at my brothers house when I was visiting.I fell in love with it and had to get me a copy to finish it.I love this writers way of writing and hope he does more of this type book.I will buy them all....

1-0 out of 5 stars Author takes liberties with accuracy of New Testament
I actually enjoyed some of the historical references in the Old Testament because I am not that familiar with it and I trusted that the author had used reliable sources to flesh out Biblical text.I became somewhat suspicious with the treatment of the story of Tamar because I could only find limited Biblical references. I also realized that David's character had became sullied from what I had previously read of him in the actual Bible. However, I am very familiar with all of the New Testament stories and have read the Gospels several times. I thought the author took so many liberties with the characters of Zechariah, Mary and Joseph that I decided not to read the rest of the book. The Bible referred to Zechariah as having had the respect of his community - the author depicted him as someone far less respected, and drew a connection between him and Herod which is not in the Bible and for which he does not give other sources other than fiction. The author depicted Joseph, husband of Mary, as being insolvent (unable to pay a dowry) and toung-tied as he tried to speak with Mary's father. The Bible shows him as a successful carpenter who again, was well respected and mature.Mary, who the Bible describes as a pure young maiden who sang songs to God, is depicted by the author as an outspoken young woman, who speaks back to her father in defense of an inarticulate Joseph. To me this is a gross misrepresentation of the characters of the Bible, and I do not wish to fill my mind with further erroneous depictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done
I admit that it has been awhile since I read this book, but I found it to be very well done. It is a real "page-turner" - once you start you find it hard to put down. It is a great way to help you "get into" the Bible and see how the Bible is such a fascinating, relevent book today. (As a rather irrelevent side note, I now attend the university that the author teaches at and have heard him lecture on occation).

We have now completed all three of Stacy Mitch's books in this series. Courageous Love, Courageous Virtue, and now Courageous Women. While we loved them all, this was hands down the favorite. With each story (eight in all) we were struck by how relevant the message of God's salvation is for us just as it was for these women of the Old and New Testament. They are filled with faith, virtue, they are sinners, they repent and yes they have great courage.God uses them all just as He uses us today to advance His plan of Salvation. An excellent format for group bible study and much discussion. We hope that there will be more from Stacy Mitch! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important and insightful ... classic Erickson
The primary textbook for my Christology class at seminary, Erickson is at his best here, covering all the necessary elements for a complete understanding of modern Christology. From the historical development of Chalcedonian Christology to the modern views of process and feminist Christology, all the bases are covered. The last half of the book is dedicated to an actual defense of the classical (Chalcedonian) view of who Jesus Christ was. No one can give the reader more information to process while keeping it clear and level-headed than Erickson can. This book is an extremely important piece of contemporary evangelical theology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Detailed and Thorough Study of Christ
This book is a very detailed and thorough study of the history, theology, and person of Christ. Erickson goes into great detail about the councils which were formulated to combat heretical views of Christ. Further, Erickson discusses the various views, past and present, of Christ (i.e. liberation, existential, black, Universalist, feminists, etc.).5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview on many issues in Christology

5-0 out of 5 stars A Diverse Anthology of Views
No book of the Bible so clearly calls for a women's commentary than the Book of Ruth. Not only are the two central characters both women, but their relationship is the engine which drives the plot and is what accounts for much of our affection for the book. Reading Ruth, edited by Judith Kates and Gail Twersky Reimer is so successful that no one wanting modern views of this book can ignore it.5-0 out of 5 stars A variety of viewpoints on the Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth is familiar to most of us- we traditionally read it during Shavuot. On the surface Ruth is a pleasant story of a young woman who returns to Israel with her mother-in-law after the deaths of thier husbands. But the very simplicity of the story raises many questions.Until this collection of midrashim - interpertations and extentions of the story to fill in the gaps- that is where the matter lay.Now is it possible to read what contemporary well educated women think about this story and the questions raised. If you've never studied a Midrash, this is a good place to begin. If you have studied Midrashim, you will see how different the prespectives are in this book. Other writings on Ruth are both very old and written exclusively by men. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys studying and values a full perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to women's midrash
Have you ever read Jewish midrash? How about midrash written by women? Here is an exciting new style/genre of biblical interpretation, which has been developing over the last decade or so.Previously midrash had been written only by men, excluding women's voices. At last women have entered this world, as the introduction says, to "create a room of our own in the house of study." READING RUTH includes 30 wonderful, loving, powerful, essays, each by a different author with a different viewpoint, including women rabbis, teachers, poets and storytellers. Each midrash is a jewel providing a string of jewels for meditation, like a rosary. What makes midrash so unique is that it allows for a creative interpretion, including the development of new folklore, new imaginings of what is possible for the Ruth story. It fills in places in the text where the story suggests these possibilities. For instance the landscape on the road to Bethlehem, or the festivities at the threshing floor. It adds the thoughts, emotions and inner workings in the minds of the characters that hinted in their words.READING RUTH is a marvelous place to begin or expand the study of Ruth, of midrash, of women's biblical commentary, and is highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best BIBLE devotional that I have EVER found!
I have been a born again believer now for over 22 years, and have continually failed to maintain a consistent, daily walk with Christ through reading the Bible..I was fine with joining Bible studies, or just hearing the Word on Sunday mornings, but have always struggled by finding anything that was relevant and easy to understand on a daily basis.....until this book. This book will change my life by allowing me to DAILY read the scripture and applying its truths to my life!
4-0 out of 5 stars If You Want to Read & Study The Bible Daily...
I have just started year three of "Search The Scriptures (Jan 2005)." This book helps you get into the Word every day (and that is a good thing).
