1-0 out of 5 stars he missed the point completely
the writer's attempt to deconstruct Paul only shows how much he does not understand Paul's epistles. It is a sad fact that those who cannot grasp something, simply because that understanding is not in them, try to make it into something else completely. Hoping, thus, to 'justify' themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST ANOTHER ONE ON PAUL
Bishop Wright has done it again. I have read several volumes on the apostle Paul, and I have to conclude that this one by NT Wright is among the top three.
3-0 out of 5 stars N.T. Wright...."Paul"
Going inside the mind of Paul. This is what N.T. Wright has attempted to do.He has attempted to "think Paul's thoughts after him.(inside cover)"He has done this by drawing on his knowledge and experience of Pauline literature as well as examining Paul in his Jewish Roots. His goal is to "constantly be stirred up to fresh glimpses of God's ways and purposes with the world and with us strange human creatures (inside cover)."Before I shall humbly attempt to interact with the argument of Wright's book, I want to make two preliminary observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to my roots
I bought this back in college and just now got around to reading it. It's basically a collection of apocryphal and otherwise "unaccepted" texts regarding Jesus of Nazareth and his apostles.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not Really Lost Books of the "Bibleth"
These do not seem to be any "Lost Books of the Bible."Many of them were most likely composed after the 2nd century and in the third and fourth. In the Protoevangelion the story of Mary's immaculate conception is told and could have been an influence on the Church's Mariology. In other books, people may have wanted to fill in some of Jesus' life.In the Infancy several times Mary uses the clothes or bathe water of Jesus to heal people. This also contains the story about Jesus speaking even while in the cradle, which I believe found its way into the Koran.Jesus kills several people as a child and later on takes over and teaches his teachers.Of last interest was the writer's claims that Jesus studied the law until aged 30.Nicodemus gives more information on the trial of Jesus and then switched to the story of Jesus's descension into hell and victory. I never knew that Beelzebub, the Prince of Hell, was different from Satan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zondervan Handbook to the Bible
Unlike other reviewers, I firmly believe this book belongs in any and all church libraries. So many people wonder what to make of scriptures and this book provides keen insight. It is well organized and suberbly edited. When combined with the rich illustrations, this book is a bargain for what Amazon is asking for it.
1-0 out of 5 stars "Did God really Say...?"
There were a number of examples in this book where the authors seem to question the truth of God's word--1: "...it might be unwise to seek to reconstruct Israel's earliest history from the stories in Genesis..." (p63) 2: "Creation is described as taking place in six days...This is not a chronological account..."(p116) 3: "Noah's story: As with creation, we should approach this account as story..."(p122)There were others I don't have the space to mention.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource
At last a book about the bible from Zondervan which does not spend most of the time telling you what to beleive and how to do it by getting itself into improbable tangles trying to eliminate the discrepancies between various books of the bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource at your fingertips
This Bible is perfect for all ages. It gives complete doctrines and understanding of our Catholic faith. I am a convert to the church for 4 years now, and this Bible has been a inspiration to me. I reccomend that you purchase Catholicism for Dummies as a companion to your studies.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR EVERY CATHOLIC; TRULY UNIVERSAL
We as Catholic Christians face the most unique times of the twenty-first century. This remarkable study bible answers many questions that many have asked about the ancient faith founded by Jesus Christ. This is rich in not only Biblical proofs but also proofs from the Catechism itself. This reinforces the ancient practice of Holy Scripture and the Holy Tradition of the Apostles as the twin pillers of the faith. As a Catholic Christian, I feel blessed by this Marvelous work and a Wonder.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read !
Topic:The History of the bible, its translations, and attitudes towards it.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent survey.
This is an introduction to the History of the Bible, but even readers who are already familiar with the outline of the subject will, I think, discover many details that are new to them in this very well told story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and approachable
Pelikan writes in an easy style and smoothly flowing perspective born of his own long familiarity with the material. He chronicles the formation of the texts known as the Old and New Testaments from their earliest oral traditions. It becomes clear that through long years and re-scribing and translating the Bible, it has been in evolution. The major effort in recent years is to return to the earliest accurate version available, and that this requires considerable scholarship to accomplish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and easy to understand...a must read
Really helped me to understand about the Bible. Very easy reading. Perfect for teenagers as well as adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written!
This book is excellent for the beginner. It's basic, easy to understand style is a definite plus! If you're looking for a good book to teach you the basics, and take you on a fun trip to understand and knowing the bible, this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars 101? Basic? No. I'd Call That Basic Plus Plus!
As the title implies, the "101" would mean "beginner level". Indeed, in this book, Bickel and Jantz wrote a really good introduction to the Bible. They start with the authorship and brief history of the Bible, why Bible is so interesting, and then moving to explain the Bible part by part -- in a Christian perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highest recommendation
Bailey's unique contribution is that he sat down with a number of trusted Palestinian nomads and listened carefully to their take on the cultural issues behind various parables. He contends, with some justice, that this group of people have something in contact with the original culture that these parables arose in, and thus can help us understand the unstated assumptions and cultural implications of the texts. He invested many years in this and did it with care and precision. On top of that, he has explored the early translations of the New Testament into Syrac and related languages. The result is nothing short of stunning. His analysis of the puzzling parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16:1-13) is worth the price of admission alone, and even on the well-trod parable of the Good Samaritan, he has much valuable insight to share.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone else missing a page?
Just thought I'd write a note because my combined edition book is missing two pages that are supposed to follow p. 105.Though there is a page 106 and 107, I notice the footnotes in my book go from 79 on p. 105 and skip to 87 on p. 107...obviously a misprint.Amazon had never heard of such a problem so I'm getting a new one...just wondered if this had happened to anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rescuing truth from familiarity
This is one of Dr. Ken Bailey's most accessible works in which he makes the wealth of his Biblical and cultural insights available for wide study.Dr. Bailey has long characterized his work with the catch-phrase "To rescue truth from familarity".There are certainly few passages of Scripture more familiar than Luke 15 and the Parable of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and Lost Sons. How many of us see that this familar teaching of Jesus is really a profound theological teaching on Who Jesus is?Jesus is the theologican who tells stories by taking familar Old Testament passages, here Psalm 23, and retelling them to make Himself the center. To top it off, this book closes with a delightful play that retells the parable in daramatic form and underscores its deep truth. You will thoroughly enjoy and learn from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Wouldn't Be Without This Concordance
In my opinion "The "Strong's Concordance" is the best concordance on the market. It works best with either the "King James" or "New King James" Versions of the Bible. Loving to stday Scripture and write I have many referance books. I use my "Strong's Concordance" and my "American Dictionary of the Enligh Language: Noah Webster's 1828 Edition" more than all the rest of my referance books put together. The Concordance's Greek and Hebrew Dictionary's are a faantastic aid to Scripture study. Along with my 1928 Webster's Dictionary, I use them constantly. The "Strongest Strongs" is the edition I own and highly recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars So Very Disappointed
I had reservations about it when my small group decided to give this book a whirl, and although I was game and tried to like it, I just couldn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Bible study
Our church's women's ministry used this book for our Bible study and enjoyed it tremendously. I could relate to so many of the characters and was so horrified by some of the others! I enjoyed reading about the many relatively obscure Biblical women. We had several elderly ladies in our group who were surprised to read stories they'd never remembered reading before. I liked that Higgs focuses on Biblical women who were strong leaders, even if they were bad for a season.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Kind of Bible Study, Different and Good
I have to say Liz Curtis Higgs sheds new light, at least for me, on a lot of those women in the Bible. You know, I've read about all these women in Ms. Curtis's book before, but somehow when I read my bible I missed a whole heck of a lot. I don't know how, because when I read this book I wanted to slap myself upside the head plenty of times. Duh, I'd mudder, how come I didn't see that? How come I didn't get it? Well I'm getting a lot of it now. As a Bible teacher, Ms. Curtis really excells and she makes it oh so interesting. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource....
I have owned this book since 1991 when I first became a Christian and have returned to it over and over again when I need more information or an explanation for Scripture. The book is well laid out, with commentary and application. It is written in a down to earth way, making it easy for anyone to understand. This is one book I would NOT be without!I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for bible students of any level.
This is a valuabale study tool. It includes outlines of every book, a synopsis of every chapter along with notes to references that need clarification. There are also lots of illustrations, maps and other helps for anyone on any level who is reading God's word. It is easy to understand, but goes deep enough for the serious student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supplement with The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs.
The Bible Reader's Companion is a very nice concise overview of the Bible with numerous black & white drawings. The comments are interesting and the conclusions are generally conservative and traditional. If you likethis book you may also enjoy THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS byCody Jones. 5-0 out of 5 stars The RSV Bible (annotated or otherwise)
I, having recently given my hardbound edition of the RSV Annotated Study Bible away, hope to purchase the leather bound edition soon because it is an excellent Bible. Along with many reviewers the RSV is truly the only ecumenical Bible around- approved for use by Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Available
Of all of the available translations that I have had exposure to, this is by far the best. All of the available books are there, but are organized in such a way as to not interfere with serious study by members of any denomination. The translation itself and the annotations are marvelous. I couldn't ask for any better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes excellent but hard to read and not user friendly
Many reviewers (particularly the more conservative Catholics) think this version of the Bible, the RSV, is the cat's meow. While I entirely sympathize with them in theory, I found this particular edition to be a bit of a pain to read, for several reasons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Study
Great study---I have always enjoyed the teachings of Kay Arthur. Understanding many (but not all)of the facets of God, His names shows He cares for me in evey area of my life. In studying the Names of God, I can now pray and believe using specific names knowing that God is my salvation, peace, provider, healer........

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
This book is a study of the names of God.However, I found some of the commentary and discussion points a stretch - discussing sexual abuse when studying the account of Hagar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study
Studying the names of God is a great way to increase your love and devotion to Him, and this easy workbook will help you. Kay style of teaching allows you to discover the truth from Scripture for yourself instead of taking her word for it. The result is an exciting, multi-week focus on the God who gives us life and peace. He is worth knowing intimately!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but not Fully Trustworthy
This is a great set of books for the serious Hebrew student. but not for the Bible teacher or pastor who is rusty on Hebrew.5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Review
Moving through every Hebrew word from Genesis to Malachi, this work provides for each word its grammatical identification, its page number in the BDB Lexicon, and its English translation.

1-0 out of 5 stars HOGWASH!!!!!
This is classic case of buffet style bible reading. It's all well and good if we focus on the touchy-feely parts of the bible and come away with that same warm and fuzzy feeling that drives the sale of Christian books and stupefies the simple minded into filling the collection plates.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook...
This book was assigned reading for an introductory hermeneutics class.I found that the authors were able to strike a solid balance between readability and intellectual depth. While I felt sufficiently challenged to think as I read the book, I never felt like they were talking above my ability to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best text book this semister
Several times so far in my student life I have come up to text books that I felt didn't do a good job. This book is different. Not only does it cover the subject in an excellent matter but this book teaches. You actually learn not just have a bunch of data shoved at you. Highest recommendation in fact plan to not only send the book to friends but will use this to teach out of later. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a load of Rubbish !!!!!
Thousands of years after the birth of Christianity, generations of Theologians has come and gone, many more thousands of different sects of the Christianity, not to mention the fact that we can't even get a room-full of Christian Apologetics to agree on what God is all about .....Yet along comes Finis J., Sr Dake with his book and figured it all out.... OH PLEASE!!!!!Let me remind Finis and my fellow readers of what god himself had said:
5-0 out of 5 stars In a Class of It's Own
This book will only appeal to two types of people: Those who like a very literal approach to interpretation and those who like non-conventional theory regarding Creation and the subject of angels, demons, giants and other less discussed topics in Genesis and world history.Dake amazingly merges all this in his huge volume of small print theological meat. From eternity past to eternity future and all in between is included. It is a library of information. It may be the only theological treatise you need alongside your favorite Bible. It is his magnum opus and rightly so.But if you are looking for lightweight, non-literal, allegorical, thin and politically correct approach, steer away from this, as it will infuriate you!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest Biblical study aids ever...
I have used God's Plan for Man for approximately 5 years now and it has been a continual reference to draw from. It also was a great reference to use during my time within our church's seminary school. I originally purchased this from Dake Publishing and then later bought one through another Christian book distributor. I have come to understand the word of God in greater detail and clarity through its use and it truly is like a Bible School in and of itself. The only thing it doesn't do for you is pray for you and read itself to you. Dake does have tapes on his website that are recorded teachings for God's Plan for Man.
