4-0 out of 5 stars Uninspired luke-warm translation, nice edition
About 3.5 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality study Bible
I LOVE this Bible!!I have many bibles that I have purchased on line. For the price the quality is superior to any bible I have purchased.I love the wide margins and the quality of the leather and bindings.I wish more publishers would produce bibles of this quality. This is a prime example of what is expected when spending aprox. $50 or more dollars on a bible!Good going Kay Arthur!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite study bible
I have been using the NISB for approximately two years now and it has become my favorite. While study bibles with notes in them are wonderful, so is "creating" your own study bible on the wide margins of this one! There are many wonderful maps and historical notations in the study bible, but not ones that are outright doctrine.I use many of the study suggestions like marking the bible in distinctive colors or signs for the main points in each book/chapter.Each chapter has a blank outline that you can fill in to summarize the book after you have gone through the chapters.I found that when I use my own study examplies that I remember them more easily than when I read other people's notes.I also like the literal translation that the NASBprovides. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Heaven Study Guide (Randy Alcorn)
First, I bought the book Heaven by Randy Alcorn. Our pastor, Max Lucado, (yes, we are blessed to have Max every Sunday morning)did a series of sermons on this subject using Randy's book as a reference. The study guide is excellent, helping me to get the most out of the book with extended thinking questions in a journal format. It also reviews the information in the book which helps me to remember the content. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For liberal theologians
Buyers beware, the Bible commentaries are written by liberal theologians. They tend to disbelieve miracles and try explaining away Devine prophecy by assigning late dates for the books. When I was reading the commentaries, I couldn't help but get the feeling that the writers were trying to destroy my faith. Also, while it is not a bad translation, the NRSV does have some gender-neutrality inserted into it. All in all, I cannot recommend this study Bible. It reads like skeptics and non-believers wrote it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Study Bible
If you are searching for a study Bible that focuses on the best modern scholarship around concerning the texts that make up the Bible, you will soon find out from most reviews on Amazon (as well as from other places such as universities) the best of the more objective ones are the HarperCollins Study Bible (just revised this year), the New Oxford Annotated Bible (3rd edition), and the New Interpreter's Study Bible. All three come with the New Revised Standard Version, generally accepted by scholars as the most accurate English translation. All come with the Apocrypha, though the New Oxford Annotated Bible is available without it.If you can afford it, I recommend all three.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT REFERENCE
This little book is a handy reference; I keep it where I study and have given away several; it's a great gift for someone who is needing to find particular scripture and isn't sure where to look~or even has a need but doesn't know what scripture would apply~or just to thumb through for inspiration; well worth it's price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Power in His Word
This is an excellent resource; one of Joyce's best books. In understanding how much power God's Word possesses and also how much power we have in speaking His Word out loud, we become grounded and centered in the promises of the Lord. This book also helps to understand our role in our relationship with Him; read His Word, meditate on His Word, believe His Word, speak His Word, Obey His Word.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING!
I am a Christian and have been most of my life.I have read the Bible off and on but ever since I have picked up this book I have been encouraged to pick up the Bible much more often!I have had this book for 8 days and I am amazed at the changes in myself and my family because of reading the Word outloud. It's a great springboard to start reading the Bible if you've not seen changes before.I more than highly recommend it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good, but similar to other FP studies
So far, I'm enjoying the First Place program and the Bible Studies. This is our second study, and while it's easy and keeps me focused on my goal of keeping Christ first place in my life, the second study is not that different from the first. They aren't real deep studies, so they're perfect for someone who's just starting a new routine of daily Bible study.Others might want to get something deeper to use alongside the First Place studies.EVfEP is a great follow up to Giving Christ First Place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Victory for Everyday People
This is the second of the First Place Bible studies that I have done.I find it easy to use, not consuming too much time, but providing MUCH food for thought.I especially love the CD's that accompany the studies that help with scripture memorization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Victory in the First Place series!
They've done it again. The First Place bible studies continue to be my favorites. I love them because studies are easy to do, each lesson takes about 5 to 10 minutes each day. But they keep you thinking & learning all day long! Plus the Scripture Memory CD helps you learn 10 verses throughout the study. This one had a bit more hokey-sounding music, it was still good though. I highly recommend ordering this study & looking into joining an actual First Place group. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great OT basic
Without blabbering on about the evangelical theological leaning of each chapter I thought I'd write an actual review of this book rather than attempt to debate the authors' theology. First off, the book is a great survey. It is a bit short at times and a bit simplistic around some of the prophets (the sections on Jonah and Haggai for example are far too basic) but it is always fair and contains some great visual aids, charts, photographs and organization. The book is set up simplistically and is a must for first year theological students. The only real problem I have ever had with this text book is that I have never been a fan of the index (which is far too short).

4-0 out of 5 stars It is an interesting read
I am going to seminary right now and this is the book being used for OT I (going from Genesis to Kings.I find the book an easy to read book, the way the chapters themselves are set up are fairly straight forward, giving consideration and theory.I would imagine that I'm probably more conservative than the writers of the book, but then again, I take things with a grain of salt ... by that I mean I go back and trust that the Bible is to be taken as a literal word of God and message of God to we who are the human race.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book, but the authors ride the fence
I thought that this was a really interesting textbook. The authors reveal the message of each Old Testament book, while discussing some of the scholarly issues surrounding each part of the Old Testament (such as the JEDP theory). Unfortunately William Lasor passed away in 1991, so Hubbard (who is dead now too) and Bush recruited six other OT scholars to complete the revision. This may be one of the reasons why the authors ride the fence on issues such as whether or not we can take the numbers in Numbers literally, the number of Isaiah's, the historical worthiness of Joshua and Jonah, and the happenings surrounding the Exodus from Egypt. The authors also seem to lean toward the book of Jonah being a parable rather than actual history, although they don't take a really strong stand on that, either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless!
Dr. Howard G. Hendricks is a master teacher, and this book is a summary of what might be his most life-changing class ... a class on how to study the Bible on your own! I had the privilege of taking that class. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants the joy of personal discovery. If you want to be able to open the Bible and discover what it means and what it means to you, then this book is one that can get you to that point!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study bible for all
John MacArthur's notes are clear, concise, and thorough in providing helpful interpretation, background information, and principles for studying the Word of God. I highly recommend this bible for absolutely anyone new to the Bible,or anyone at all looking to study the Bible. I actually prefer the NKJV version, but I have found the NASB to be clearer in many cases. I do recommend comparing versions, however, since the NKJV can be more accurate in some cases, so if you have the means, have both on hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good study Bible
This is a very good study Bible and one I use a lot.It provides excellent notes on every book of the Bible in a readable and easy to understand format.MacArthur is a Calvinist, so his notes come from that prespective.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration and helpful book for women
The introduction of this book is worth the retail price. It's an essay in itself. A sample sentence: "To have a friend is to acknowledge that some part of someone else's life which we have held tenderly, trustingly in our own hands might well die with us." Okay, it's a sentence you may have to read twice. But then you "get it," and you reflectively pause before continuing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sequel is great, too.
This is a really good intro to the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Clear, simple, and biblically solid.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Guide
How to Get Into the Bible is a wonderfully laid out book that really brings the messages of the Bible home. Each book of the Bible is reviewed. Timelines and maps of the surrounding areas, found in the first page or so of each review, help the reader keep straight complicated chronological and geographical data. Also at the end of each review is the encore section. This tells the reader where they can find similar material in other books of the Bible. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Back to the Basics...
This book is an awesome review for "old" Christians and an excellent start book for "new" Christians. The devotional focuses on how to study the Bible, have quiet times, and memorize Scripture.I have been a Christian for many years and learned something new from this book in every chapter.I can't wait to go on in the series! You won't regret buying this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in a discipleship course
A great discipleship course in the basics.I took this course myself in 1987 and after that took the leadership training and co-led the course at my church.Currently (2006), I am a volunteer at the local Center for Women's Ministry where I facilitated the class again. From what I've seen, it's the best training out there for a Christian, whether new or old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Old Testament
This is an invaluable guide to assist in understanding the Old Testament. The author provides important historical background to help the reader understand what the original authors/compilers were trying to say.I am currently using this text for my 1st year Education for Ministry class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
I have had a copy of the 3rd edition, which I have found truly helpful in understanding the OT in the context of the faith of the people. The material added in this edition makes the text even more useful.I highly recommend this to any serious student of the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fleshes out the Bible
No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried.Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light.Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors.Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them."Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Word Blooms Purple
As an author and ministry speaker, I now reach for two main resources--the Bible and this dictionary. I've found, to my delight, that the Word blooms purple on its pages. And, this translates to striking insights in my writing and speaking.
3-0 out of 5 stars Embarrassing First Impression
I became intersted in this book through reading another book by one of the contributors, D. Brent Sandy--Plowshares and Pruning Hooks. The book certainly has a wealth of information from an impressive array of scholars, and I have already gained insight from its entries. But its first impression left me embarrassed for the publisher and author of the Intoduction. On page xxi, the author states that "Gideon's mother" received an "annunciation of birth."It was, of course, Samson's mother (Judges 13).Readers expect that a scholarly work of this sort would at least be accurate in basic biblical facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source Book
In my Biblical and psychology studies I have found this book to be the best of its kind anywhere for the purpose of understanding dream imagery according to biblical understanding. 5-0 out of 5 stars Catholic guidance for wives and mothers
Easy to read, very interesting, good down-to-earth advice.
3-0 out of 5 stars good but something's lacking
The women's group in our parish has been using this book for the past several months. There is much that is good in it and it is solidly Catholic. But I don't think it "hits the mark" for the majority of faithful Catholic women today, that is those who do not fit the model of Mrs. Martin. The main point of disparity is that most Catholic women do not have faithful Catholic husbands, like Mrs. Martin does, who function as the spiritual heads of the households. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and thoughtful - highly recommended
An excellent study guide on the topics covered. This is however a WORK-book; if you like to be spoon fed your theology, this book may not be to your liking. To use it, you will need your bible, a notepad, and some time, but it's well worth the effort. In the end, I not only learned about the material explicitly covered, but I think I also improved my bible study habits.5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and thoughtful - highly recommended

Workbook is great for getting good understanding of differenttopics found in the Bible. Most of the basic doctrines covered in detail. The studies on the Trinity and baptism were extremely good. Book is well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books to give to a friend!
Ever since I was a child, I'd heard about Watchman Nee and his wonderful writings. It wasn't until my adult years that I finally ordered three of his books - and I haven't been disappointed.Sit, Walk, Stand is a very simple, yet deeply profound explanation of the Book of Ephesians. The book is an easy read and short - only 78 pages long - but don't let that fool you - Sit, Walk, Stand has more packed into these 78 pages than most books over 300 pages (and it takes 1/10 the time to read!).
5-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet
This book is very small, but it packs a heck of a message for the limited amount of space it uses. All that this book does is pick apart the book of Ephesians from the Bible. It divies it into three sections; hence "Sit, Walk, Stand." If you don't have time to read a long book, actually, scratch that, you need to read this book! Nee does an excellent job of explaining Ephesians in a clear, simple, and powerful way. I promise you, you will need to read this book a few times to really digest what Nee is saying; and you will want to!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of the Faith
This book is a must read for every Christian. It deals with the fundamentals that we so often miss or skip over. Application of these principlas will be dramatically life changing!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary
This dictionary contains terms that one would need to know for reading Church documents. Unfortunately, I give it three stars because it only goes from Latin-English. If you're trying to write in Latin, you'll be quite frustrated and need to find another dictionary. But if you're simply reading, this book will do the job admirably.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you know Latin and want a specialized dictionary
This is not a general Latin dictionary. If you are learning Latin, you are better served by the Collins Gem Latin Dictionary. However, if you already know Latin and want a reference specifically for Latin as used in Ecclesiastical documents, this is a good reference.Remember that it is a specialized subset.Think of it like a "Dictionary of Medical Terms".You would not use that dictionary to learn English, and you would not use this dictionary to learn Latin. You need a general Latin dictionary to compliment this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy , useful book
I agree with Ryan R. Grant's review below. It will be easier to use by someone with some familiarity with Latin. On the positive side, it is sturdily bound and neatly formatted with clear print on eye-ease paper--very convenient to use. But one thing that no one has mentioned so far is the accents. Following the practice of ecclesiastical latin, this dictionary uses acute accents to indicate the stressed syllable of each Latin word. This will be a minor annoyance for the user who tries to determine the stress on some verb forms. For example, the present tense of the verb "invenio" appears with the stress on the "e"; But there is no indication of how to determine where the stress falls on the second-person and third-person forms of that verb. On the other hand, in a classical dictionary where long vowels are marked by macrons; the lack of a macron written over the "e" in the verb "invenio" conveniently indicates that the "e" is short and that the stress must recede to the first syllable on those forms. Ultimately, the user of this dictionary will need to refer to a classical dictionary for this information. Another minor inconvenience is that I-stem nouns are not marked. There are about fifty of them in use; and although they can now be found on line with a little digging;it would have been convenient to have I-stem nouns indicated in this dictionary. ... Read more
