5-0 out of 5 stars Story of Ruth
Jam packed with wisdom and insight for all people. A must read for all women and one that you will read many times. Sure wish I had this guide when I was a young woman. Plan to use as a discussion book for a spirituality group. A fabulous book to give as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivation for coping with the daily grind of life
I read "The Story of Ruth" about a year after I read "Scarred by Struggle," which is also by Dr.Chittister. Both books offer inspriation for dealing with difficulties based on a biblical story. The difference between the type of advice they offer, is that "The Story of Ruth," contends more with the daily struggles that confront us in our lives, whereas "Scarred by Struggle" offers advice more suitable to a particular setback, such as an end of a relationship, or loss of job.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Ruth-----A Beautiful Gift
Every mother should gift her daughter with this beautiful book! Joan Chittister unfolds beautifully and clearly what every mother wishes her daughters to know in order to become the full persons they were created to be.Each example from the Story of Ruth powerfully illustrates "delineating moments in every human life...... points after which we are never the same again".In The Story of Ruth, Joan Chittister shows us the qualities of Naomi and Ruth as they face life and make choices.... but more than that, Chittister confirms, refreshes and energizes the "stuff" that all women hold within themselves. This is an en-courgaging book for all women...mothers daughters, grandmothers.....women....single or married..... and it is also a book for MEN!For within these pages there is the depth of thought and experience lived by "the other half of humanity." Men will find the richness of this insight invaluable....an enhancement to their own perspective and attitude toward creation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource and guide
This book is a good tool to use for small groups, fellowship studies, or sunday school class.I used it for my college sunday school class to place emphasis on embracing our Christian community. While John Ortberg does a good job at painting the picture for us, it is basically his "The Life You've Always Wanted" book re-done for small groups in a practical way.I enjoyed using this guide but had to restructure the questions and format to cater to a sunday school environment.I would recommend making sure you know your group, and understand their needs, and perhaps come up with additional questions to meet the needs of your group. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just the Basics
For those who are new or trying to make some sense of the structure of the Bible, I highly recommend this book.Reading the whole Bible can be daunting and Max Ander's book provides some context to show the basic structure and themes of the Bible through simple narrative and repetitive exercises, which aids in your retention. No commentary, just the facts to help one get started, build perspective and context for reading the Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview
The Bible is far too complex to read cold -- and 2000 years later, few of us have even a basic grasp of the structure. Real understanding of the book is possible only if you grew up with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
Whether you are a seeker, a new believer, or a seasoned Christian, this book will be a great resource for learning and teaching the basics of the Christian faith.Sections 1 and 2 lay a solid foundation on which to study and build your knowlege of God's Word, the Bible, from which all Christian beliefs are drawn.Section 3 in the 2005 version summarizes the 10 great doctrines of the Christian faith -- the beliefs that define what the Christian faith is all about. This book is a must-have for all Christians and all who are interested in Christianity -- I highly recommend it! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Personal attacks are not science
Chapters 4 and 5 in this book are very interesting, a good survey of archaeology in Israel. The preceeding 100 pages amount to little more than scathing personal attacks on other researchers coupled with some brief and basic arcaological theory. Though it is tempting to get into the post-modernism bash, the personal attacks exhibited on those researchers are in poor taste. And I'm not downplaying this, he lists their names and then gives several paragraphs explaning why their biases prevent them from being good scholars. I sincerely hope this isn't reflective of archaeological scholarship in general. From other books I've read (Finkelstein, Mazar, Stern, and Cline), I've noticed that Dever is the only one to resort to personal attacks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.
While the polemic against the minimalists gets a little excessive at times, I have to say that it is necessary, as they are very vocal these days. There is no need to debate fundamentalists because they've made up their mind already (as Michael Freeman's review shows).
5-0 out of 5 stars A prize-winner!
Dever deserves a blue ribbon for the most cumbersome title in many years. He should also garner an award for his blistering assessment of "postmodern" historians. While he has contested "minimalist" academics elsewhere, this book is an excellent compendium of the issues and evidence regarding the historical validity of the Hebrew Bible.Although the arena of biblical history is small, the issues dealt with are important. His conclusions will have lasting impact not only in biblical history, but archaeology and other disciplines.Although a serious subject, Dever's piercing wit keeps this book a lively and captivating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holds Such a Place in My Heart
This NIV study Bible has been such a precious wonderful tool that God has used in my life to sanctify me with his Word. The NIV translation itself is such a smooth and easy read without going too far toward the paraphrase direction like some modern translations are prone to do. In speaking about the study notes, we must always keep in mind that they are not infallible, but in the case of this particular Bible, the notes are so utterly helpful in understanding the text. This is the primary Bible I use when conducting personal and group Bible study. I think that every Christian in the english speaking world would do good to get one of these Bibles. Praise the Lord for an easy to understand yet true-to-the-text study Bible! Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study Bible
This is an excellent study Bible, with easy to read and understand notes on just about every passage in the Bible. While I prefer the NKJV, the NIV is very easy to read and understand. An exceelent addition to your library!

5-0 out of 5 stars NIV does it again.
I've been using this study bible since the first copies came off the press.I have recommended it to many Christains and even given my older copies to those who could use them. This revision continues the same standard of presentation, notes to help one read and understand the word of God as you go along.Charts, maps, diagrams, chronologies, illustrations, a subject listing, concordance and all within this 2200 page bible.I prefer the standard size as the print is readable and clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR BIBLE SCHOLARS & CHURCH HISTORIANS
NOTE: See my other review on vol. 1 of New Testament Apocrypha5-0 out of 5 stars What the first volume did for the Apocryphal Gospels. . .
. . .this volume does for the Acts and Apocalypses of the Apostles.3-0 out of 5 stars A good effort marred by archaism
Volume II of New Testament Apocrypha represents a comprehensive collection of the pseudo-apostolic writings of early Christianity. The introductions are quite good. The translations, however, are marred by frequent use of achaic,pseudo-biblical language which has thankfully been done away with in most modern translations of ancient texts. Do we really need to read words like "haply", "whilst", and "such-like", or a phrase like "do ye repent you" in the late 20th century? For those just interested in sampling a variety of these works, and more, a good portion of the translations of this book are available at a lower price in "The Other Bible". For the hard core, however, this book does contain material unavailable elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource!
This series of books is ideal for those wishing to study the bible on a book-by-book basis. The books themselves are reasonably priced and self-contained (meaning you get both the scripture and the commentary). The questions in the back are great for not only checking up on your grasp of the details of each chapter, but to apply the contents of the chapter to one's everyday life.It can also be used for individual bible study, small groups, or (as I've done it) a group of about 40 people. Also, there are great maps and word-studies of key concepts in the scripture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best commentary on Acts available
Hahn & Mitch have done another fantastic job. They take the data of the biblical book, break down for the modern reader what's happening, how it relates to what's going on before and after, and gives us the theological significance besides.4-0 out of 5 stars Catholic Bible Study Tool for Individuals or Groups

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I already loved Carolyn Custis James's writing after I read, "When Life and Beliefs Collide." (In fact, I require it in a seminary class I teach.) But after reading "Lost Women of the Bible" I'm convinced she is one of the most important voices in Christendom today. Through James's exporation of Esther, whom God used to rescue His people from genocide, we learn that God's design for woman is not to "be rescued by men" (as is often taught), but rather to partner with them. Through Tamar we see that a woman considered one of the bad girls of the Bible is actually a shining example of loyal love. James guides the reader to look afresh at these and other key Bible characters. In the process she helps both women and men see who God made them to be and how they are designed to interact. Hers is an important message for any era.
5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book
What an amazing read!Very thought provoking and enjoyable. Carolyn did an excellant job with her research into biblical times and even more so at using the choices of their lives to impact the lives that we live today.Definately one of the better books that I've read. Now I will have to get her other book, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A super book
This little gem of a book has such clarity and liveliness that I would not hesitate to put it into the hands of a teen; at the same time, it contains such significant theological insights that it also belongs in the hands of clergy and those in professional ministry. And women of all ages who are thirsting for strong biblical role models will indeed find the "strength and significance" James promises in her sub-title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Impacting for the Desperate and Needy
I was 16 the first time I read this book and it greatly impacted my life then.It was the first stepping stone to walking in freedom in Christ, showing me that the fears, insecurities and shyness that I never thought of (and even blamed others for, "If only they'd do this...") were from my own sins, and Jesus could free me from them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful little book!!
In this little book published by Christian Literature Crusade (CLC), Roy Hession focuses on the road a Christian must take in order for him/her to be useful to God.Brokenness, humility of heart and mind, purity, and other virtues are necessary, and at the end of the book, he speaks about his own "Calvary Road" so many years ago which prompted him to write this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars The blood of Christ
Pastors and mature Christians have strongly recommended this book to me. They told me it has changed their lives. The principles about living in the light are really good and should be stressed in this day and age where sin is considered an outdated concept even in Christian circles. I knocked one star because even though it is only around a hundred pages, it seemed repetitious to me. The phrase "the blood of Christ" was used so much it almost became a mantra. Yes, it is the central concept of Christianity, but there is more to the Christian walk. The Church and the fellowship of believers is important as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars a little odd, but quite useful
I was a good bit confused when I saw that Cliffs Notes had published a Notes on, of all things, the Bible.I mean, coming from someone who reads their Bible often, I never thought someone would need a copy of the Notes to understand the Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a reprieve for the unremitting boredom
Wow, I really have to say--this is one Cliffs Notes that I can appreciate. It actually has a purpose. This is the perfect book for those of us who are forced by parents and sunday school teachers to read the Bible on penalty of everlasting suffering and torment. I wish this was available when I was growing up...it is the perfect tool to decieve those that would try to force us to read the incomphrensible gibberish that is the Bible. And frankly rounding out at just under 100 pages, I can say that this is about as much of the Bible that I can bear. Easy to read and understand and without the mind-altering, brainwashing side affects. A+, highly recommended!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Newer Testament
Another translation of the New Testament? Why?Don't we have enough Bibles already?I would not have paid any more attention this book, except that I noted Lattimore's other works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent translation
This is a highly readable "direct from the source" translation of the Greek NT by a greek language scholar. It is in the form of a novel with headings at the top that provide the chapter and verse markings rather than in columns, a refreshing difference. The translation is very up-to-date, meaning in St. Mathew's gospel "virgin" has been translated as "maiden" (you KNOW what I'm referring to). If you must read the NT, this one will be a good one for you.Lattimore's translation is a lively curious read. The style of this translation reads like a novel, not a religous text per se. If you have difficulty with the typical dry biblical prose of the NT, this translation will work for you. I can now say that I've read the entire NT and can make my own judgement on it.I've compared other bibles to this one (RSV and KJ) selecting random passages and it is a true translation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Smell the Ink in Your Nostrils
Lattimore's translation of the N.T. seems so new it's like it just came off the presses. It's so fresh you can smell the ink in your nostrils. It's so vibrant you can easily forget it's the N.T. and then forget to put it down. It's so gripping that instead ofdreading the daily dose of a couple of verses, you look forward to overloading on your next fix. At least I do, and that's after reading countless translations, studying all sorts of helpful guide books, and knowing the Sunday School stories front to back.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Journey
The reader will travel with the author throughout the Middle East, following the steps of the patriarchs through the beginnings of the conquest by Joshua, in source of a connection with history and ultimately a divine spark. This author is very easy to read and provides colorful descriptions of his surroundings that allow the reader to be there. Throughout the book is an undercurrent of "Why can't we just all get along!"
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to the Lands of the Bible for People of all Faiths
I've been a fan of Bruce Feiler's writing after watching him on C-Span's Book TV talk about his first book about Abraham. This must have been about four or five years ago now. I went out to purchase ABRAHAM and discovered a treasure. Feiler brings many gifts and talents to writing, particularly religious writing. First of all he writes about issues regarding faith from the point of view of one who practices his faith. Like many of his readers, his journey to faith has not been a straight path which seems to give him a good perspective on the questions people are asking. He also has a fluid writing style and is able to weave personal memoir, always interesting and at times moving stories, geography, history, and theology together to create a great read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Succeeds despite itself...
Walking the Bible is not among the better travel writing I've read primarily because it focuses more on the author than the locations he visited.Feiler did get around:from Turkey to Egypt, from the Negev to the Sinai, from Jerusalem to Jordan, but he minimizes the narrative elements one typically associates with good travel writing for a seemingly endless array of personal epiphanies. Despite it's subtitle, Walking the Bible is more a journey by catharsis through Bruce Feiler's mind than a journey by land through the five books of Moses. Thus, beyond his ubiquitous food metaphors, a descriptive presence is often found wanting.

4-0 out of 5 stars give Machen a run for his money
This is different, not better or worse, than Machen's classic "New Testament Greek for Beginners."Whereas Machen is simple, systematic, and small, Mounce is wordy, complicated, and bulky (you need a separate work book for the exercises.)To learn Greek, you need both Machen AND Mounce.
5-0 out of 5 stars Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar
One of the most helpful textbooks I've ever used.Multiple tools for learning really enhance the experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent introduction
Mounce gives a very streamlined introduction to Greek, tailored specifically for the New Testament. It will get you up and reading the Greek New Testament as fast as one possibly could. This book appears to be a standard for american seminaries. My only concern is that, with this book being a standard, we will churn out pastors who read and translate Greek in the same way - the Mounce way. My intuition is that much in exegesis is a judgment call, and so my worry is that we are all getting the "Mounce translation" of the Greek New Testament. ... Read more
