5-0 out of 5 stars This book turned on the light of Bible Study for me.
Dr. DeHaan's "Portraits of Christ in Genesis" is the number two book I recommend to almost anyone I talk to any length of time. The first, of course the Bible. I was an avid reader of Scripture, in fact once reading it through 4 times in a year BUT when I read this book, I not only "read" the Bible, each time I opened it, I explored it, searched it, meditated on it. I encourage you to buy it and several for others...I have given many.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christ In The WORD
I have read many books by M.R. Dehaan and have loved them all. They are Rich in Spiritual Truths.M.R. Dehaan has an incredible God given gift for taking you into the deep waters of Scripture in the simplest of ways.Portraits of Christ in Genesis is that type of book. You learn to see Christ in every chapter not only of the book of Genesis but every book of the Bible. The beautiful types showing God's love for mankind and His plan of Salvation are richly portrayed through the words of this wise old Preacher.I Highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Revelation of Christ
The only negative aspect of M.R. Dehaans Portraits of Christ in Genesis is that it is not long enough. In fact, the book originally was to illustrate portraits of Christ from the entire Old Testament but Dr. Dehaan sensed that to be a mounumental task, so he limited the scope to Genesis. The revelation of Christ in the Bible begins at Genesis 1:1.The Genesis portraits are detailed in profile yet Dr. Dehaan encourages readers to look further into the depths of scripture to find deeper shades of meaning for each portrait. This was M.R. Dehaans last book of the 25 he wrote and he passed into the presence of the Lord shortly after completing it.Portraits of Christ in Genesis is a climactic testimony to a life of service to the Lord. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Must Have Book for Coaches!
This is the must have book for coaching boys sports. You can take the virtues described in Tim's book and transform into team talks. There is a group that advocates this book and has done wonders with sporting teams. [...] and see how they use virtue talks to spark the faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith Formation
As a book for our Men's Group the book is very helpful to teach us what virtues are to be about. The implemenation of the scripture and catechesis are powerful and I can't say enough good things about this small study book.Thank you and God Bless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real substance, good advice, scriptural inspiration...
Gray writes, "Today it is more common to hear about values than virtues. Current thought is that society would be safe, healthy, and happy, if only we could instill proper values into people. Values-based moral education programs exemplify the modern conviction that morality is nothing other than the art of making good choices, where we are guided entirely by one's own values. One could critique this approach to morality on philosophical grounds, but my criticism is simple and to the point. The problem is that values fall short when it comes to making men moral. Having good values is a fine thing, but the battle of morality is not so much about *knowing* what is right as it is *doing* what is right. The difference between wanting to do the good and actually doing it is tremendous. Thus, many men who commit adultery know what they are doing is wrong (no need for clarification), but they are unfaitful despite their values."

5-0 out of 5 stars Different aspects in our pursuit of knowing God intimately
Excellent overview of different aspects of the Christian life and following close after God.Looks at different techniques of a hard pursuit of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to know God
Author, Kenneth Boa, has put together a comprehensive text that covers 12 major approaches that mankind has taken throughout history in an attempt to know and follow God. He stresses our need for a variety of approaches. The text looks overwhelming. But, in actuality, the chapters are short enough to cover in one sitting. Each ends with questions that cause the reader to do some deep personal intropspection. And they lead to some powerful group discussions in our women's Bible study group.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical and Concise Look at Spiritual Transformation
This book delivers a thorough and concise exposition of spiritual growth. The writer is not afraid to view each segment of spritual growth with a critical and honest evaluation, even at the expense of irritating some closed-mind readers or even those of us that hate being found to think wrongly or without basis regarding what we believe. This deserves a place on the required reading list of every Bible student or anyone else seeking a deeper understanding of maturity. Keep it with your commentaries and dictionaries for future reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Whew! What a mindfull!
Reading this book through was a chore that put me to sleep any number of times.Granted, I fall asleep easily, so this should not reflect on the excellent quality of the information contained. The writing style is somewhat out of date, and the author's tendency to break into preaching or praise tended to be distracting.
1-0 out of 5 stars Cannot share the same Enthusiasm
I bought this book a number of years ago for apologetics purposes-- While I would agree with other reviewers that it holds a high view of Scripture, and the book definitely represents a lot of research, I think that the approach to symbology used here can be problematic. The entire book is a study of constellations, and how they display the Gospel in the Stars. While this is an interesting study I think there a oouple of underlying problems with this approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information the easy way
Readers feel like Bruce and Stan are talking to them. Great interpertations of what the Bible tells us.Time -lines are most helpful. I read this book with my hi-lighter in hand.So much information presented in clear language that was great fun to read.Ordered more of their stuff immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A quick and fun read about the Bible.
Bruce and Stan keep things rolling along with their lighthearted approach to Bible study. Their book is compact - easy to hold and read or throw into a backpack without it weighing a ton. It really has a way of bringing the important points together in as short a way as possible (includes the entire Bible in an overview to be read in under 25 minutes). Also includes a handy list of concordances like where to find info on "friendship" or "disappointment" within the Bible.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Simple
Perhaps by the time I got to this particular book, it was already a bit beneath me.Still, it seemed to me that the arguments presented were simplistic. For example, the "discussion" with Paul and law betrayed a distinct anti-legalistic bias, and did so in what totally ignored the finer (and not so fine) points of what is in reality a highly complex debate.Nevertheless, I suppose it would have some benefit for those starting out in the Biblical studies field, though my more liberal colleagues would probably disagree. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Post Critical Naivete Meets the Old Testament
Brevard Childs, noted scholar of the Hebrew scriptures and biblical theologian, has provided the church with a helpful introdcution to his version of canon criticism applied to the Old Testament. Use of "Old Testament" over "Hebrew Bible" or "Tanak" here is deliberate because, as a true Yale-schooler (cf. Lindbeck and Frei), Childs deliberately writes as a Christian churchman and regards the Protestant canon as normative. His method is one of looking for the theological substance of a given Old Testament book as it is embedded in its final canonical form and arrangement.Seeking a divine communication "beyond the desert of criticism" (Ricoeur), he briefly introduces and then brackets out the various historical-critical issues presented by a given book. The title is somewhat misleading as this is not a true "Introduction" on the order of Eissfeldt, R.K. Harrison, or Longman/Dillard, but is properly an introduction to Childs' method of approach. Although OT scholarship has surpassed many of his historical-critical conclusions (hence 4 stars), Childs achieves theological profundity in many places. He also writes in an elegant, preachable prose that theologians, pastors, and students will find refreshing and welcome.
4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I am currently reading this book for a class, and I am enjoying it. Most of the students don't like it because it is hard to understand, but I like that it is challenging. He does a good job of laying out the information and allowing you to draw conclusions (though he makes some himself). Good book. Worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like it or hate it, you can't ignore it
This is one of the most influential general introductions to the Bible ever written. After more than 20 years, it is still much discussed and much misunderstood.Childs is a devout Christian who advocates a new approach to Biblical criticism, called Canonical Criticism, whereby you should consider books of the Bible and indeed the whole Bible in the form in which they are accepted as canonical (namely inspired and authoritative works) by Jews and Christians. You may agree or disagree with his approach, but read this book carefully and think hard; whatever your conclusions, you will gain a lot of insight.Of course, as its title indicates, it covers only the Old Testament. ... Editorial Review

A kind of "mongrel litter" by way of Pascal, Voltaire, and Ambrose Bierce, this theological run through the alphabet goes from Abraham and Agnostic straight through to YWHW and Zaccheus--the tax collector who shimmied up the tree on Palm Sunday to get a good look at Jesus. In between we get a heady brew of humor and wisdom. On Anger, for example, Buechner writes: "Of the seven deadly sins, anger is possibly the most fun.... In many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you." Or this, on wine: "Unfermented grape juice is a bland and pleasant drink ... [but] it is a ghastly symbol of the life blood of Jesus Christ, especially when served in individual antiseptic, thimble-sized glasses. Wine is booze, which means it is dangerous and drunk-making. It makes the timid brave and the reserved amorous. It loosens the tongue and breaks the ice especially when served in a loving cup. It kills germs. As symbols go, it is a rather splendid one."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Upbeat and profound
This little book by Fred Buechner is a gem. It's crisp, hopeful Christian theology. It's an upbeat page-turner, but it is not dumb-downed for the masses. I keep going back to my dog-eared 1974 original version of this book by my bedside. I bought the updated paperback version both as gifts and as a traveling companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars continually thought provoking
This book is so much fun.Buechner writes so well and thinks so clearly. It's a kind of iconoclastic dictionary. He invites us to look at words, concepts and articles of faith differently and to shatter the platitudes-all by giving short definitions of the terms we use every day as people of faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure of a book
This was the first book by Frederick Buechner I have read, and I have already ordered more.

The Scriptures tell us to keep watch over our souls, but most of us women are so used to caretaking for others, even in our prayers that we forget to even pray over ourselves! (to pray HIS WORD daily for others check out "ALPHABET PRAYERS the Power of Praying Scripture into the Hearts You Love").
5-0 out of 5 stars Praying God's Word
This is an excellent source for a prayer group. Our church has been using it and we are learning alot from the way it was written. It is a wonderful book and I would recomment it to a group or a single reader. CB

5-0 out of 5 stars Praying God's Word:Breaking Free from Spiritual Strongholds
This book may become a Christian classic. The subject matter is drawn from two of Beth Moore's Bible studies, Breaking Free and Living Free, which would be advantageous but not necessary to complete before beginning Praying God's Word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Results from the "Experiment"
I found this book to be very helpful in my walk with God. It made me slow down to read familiar passages which led to new and real insights. The authors do a great job of explaining and guiding the reader into "lectio divina." This book has helped me feel one with God while revealing my own heart more than any other devotional book. A great introductory devotional style read for anyone seeking to emotionally draw close to and connect with the heart of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solitude and Silence Allow God's Voice to be Heard
The ancient meditative practice called "lectio divina" (Latin for "divine reading") is very simple and very helpful in studying scripture. The practice requires that you read a passage of scripture slowly, preferrably out loud, and then consider the words thoughtfully. After some journaling and prayer, read the same passage again, this time considering what it felt like to be there, in the event.Use all your senses and your imagination and journal on the passage. Finally, a third reading where you listen for the words or phrase that really speak to you and journal prayerfully about that consise message. This message is most likely God speaking to you personally through scripture.Studying scripture doesn't get any better than this!
4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
So far this book is good, it has been hard to find the Silence to enjoy, which is probably all the more reason this book is something I need to be reading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair, but faulty, analysis of the Jewish Festivals of the Torah
First, please know that I agree wholeheartedly with the most basic premise of Chumney's book--that the Festivals commanded in the Torah point to Christ--and that it is not my intention to disparage the premise of this book or its basic theology. On the contrary, I agree with it VERY much.
1-0 out of 5 stars Edward Chumney's version of the seven festivals
This is a gentile perspective of the Jewish perspective. It is too cumbersome to read to the end. The transliterations are not accurate. It is definitely not something that a Jewish person would be able to get through, whether a believer or not a believer in Messiah. It is better to write from your own personal experiences and culture. When you try to enter into someone else's culture, it is not the same.5-0 out of 5 stars onenewman
This is an excellant book. Eddie Chumney writes very methodically which makes it easy to remember and understand. For anyone interested in their Hebraic Roots this one is the best in regard to understanding the Bibical past, present and future. All your questions will be answered as you read this book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must lexicon for the serious student of Biblical Hebrew.
There are numerous lexicons, dictionaries, and concordances on the market for students to use when translating Hebrew words as they appear in the Old Testament Hebrew text into English. This is one the few (and the only one I know of personally) that not only gives on the viewpoint of translating Hebrew words into English, while carrying across the thought process that comes with Ancient Hebrew culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for serious Bible students
As the other reviewers have said this is definitely a book you need to have in your collection along with a good Strong's Concordance and Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon (ISBN: 1565632095).For the most part if these three books agree about the definition of a word you can take it as that.In some cases I have seen the three disagree, but that should just lead you into a more in-depth Bible study that is bound to help you grow spiritually.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
An excellent addition to any library. Easy to use, but if you have no knowledge of Greek, the words are not transliterated for you. However, that won't hinder you from digging truths from the New Testament using this book.If I had to replace all my Greek study books for any reason, I would start with this one - it's the most used in my modest collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference work for the New Testament
This is the second copy of this reference work I have owned. The first was destroyed by fire. This was also the first book I bought to replace my previous library.Bullinger does such a fine job at defining every word of the New Testament. The definitions presented will often provide the serious student with glimpses of insight that they could not get with any other work I have seen. The only thing better, other than talking to the Lord himself, would be talking one-on-one to Bullinger himself. This is definitely a 5 star book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars About as Good as It Gets
I have long enjoyed, as a studious person [...] about knowing things exactly as they really are, the YLT.My two preferred English versions of the Bible for study are the YLT and Green's Interlinear. Both are very literal and far more consistent, and thus accurate to translating words and verb tenses. I'm not sure which I'd put over the other, for both have their need for updating for even better accuracy. But, where one falls short, relatively rare, the other often has the repair.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible - a must for the serious bible student
Young's strict adherence to the accurate rendition of what the original Hebrew/Greek text says is very refreshing in this era of making the bible "easy to understand" which really amounts to clouding the real meaning of the word.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best study version yet
Young's Literal Translation is considered one of the most accurate and literal translations that has been done. Robert Young did a very good job in creating a word for word translation. It is based on the Masoretic Text and the Textus Receptus, the same texts that were used for the King James Version. For this reason, it reads similiar to the King James Version, right down to the Elizabethian English (thee, thou, etc.).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bible Reader
Boyd's book was an interesting book.I enjoyed his insight on the life of Paul.I did find one problem with his book.Towards the end, he starts using his imagination to fill in the blanks on Paul's life.He added anextra mission trip which the Bible does not include.Other than that Ienjoyed the Book.I would recommend this book to any person that isinterested in a detailed book on the life of Paul. ...
