5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for business and for everyday life
My husband wants to start his own business. He has the skill to perform the service, but he has a mental block with getting started. This book is the ignition he needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chuck Norris called this book PHENOMENAL...He's Right
One of the best books i've ever read. The author presents hundreds of Solomon's Proverbs covering 15 topics. The chapters on diligence, conflict and adversity, and partnering have been life-changing for me.And his chapter on deferred hope gives the most enlightening revelation on why relationships fall apart that I have ever heard.Thankfully he also shows Solomon's answers for restoring broken relationships.Reading the chapters on the booby traps to success and the number one cause of financial loss helped me to understand why some of my past efforts had failed so miserably.I only wish I had found this book 20 years ago.I too wish that Scott would have covered all 46 categories of Proverbs, but doing so would have probably resulted in a thousand page book.I'm a Christian, so I really loved his last chapter, but unlike the reviewer before me, Scott said right at the beginning of the book that the laws of life revealedin Proverbs can be used by Christian and non-Christian alike to achieve many of Solomon's promised outcomes.I 'll be giving out lots of copies of this book this Christmas.I can't think of a better gift to give to those I care about most.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT worth the money
"The Richest Man Who Ever Lived" by Steven K. Scott, I thought, would be a good buy.It was the farthest thing from a good buy.The premise of this book is imparting the wisdom of King Solomon to the masses by way of the Bible's book of Proverbs. That is at least how the book is marketed. Here are my problems with this book.First, there were plenty of good things in the book up to a point (page 244) when he states that he had divided up the book of Proverbs into 46 categories. And then proceeds to tell us that he has only presented 15 of these categories. In other words, he published an incomplete book. And it does little good to tell people, "think of the incredible insights that await you."Hey, Stevie Unwonder, I bought the book to get YOUR insights, not go through the thing myself.I probably should have done that to begin with, because I would have saved myself a lot of money.Second, he doesn't even use the Jewish bible, the Tanakh, for his source, but rather relies on the most perverted form of the Bible, the King James Version, not to mention other xian-dogma-infested version...Revised Standard, New American Standard, New International Version.NO!You MUST go to the original Hebrew for a correct understanding. And if you don't know Hebrew, the Orthodox Union publishes the entire Tanakh in Hebrew and English translation UNTOUCHED.These other so-called translations have had things altered that aren't in the original, so the sourcing isn't even correct.Third, he gets to the point where he says that the only way to honor G-d is by becoming a xian.In other words, he basically says that none of the things he has presented in his book will work unless you are a xian first. And then he gets to sounding like a crazed southern-baptist preacher during a summer-time tent revival.Talking about how Jesus said that, and how Jesus said this.I didn't buy the book to hear what Jesus said.I could care less what he supposedly said.I bought the book to read about Solomon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening Comparative Analysis of Islamic and Christian Eschatology
This book is a fascinating, frightening comparative analysis of Islamic and Christian eschatology. The author is a Christian (Protestant) who has studied Islam during the course of his long-term involvement in interfaith dialogues.Drawing from the Koran and the Sunna--the two principle sources of Islamic doctrines--he has identified the prophesied Islamic Messiah, Muhammed al Mahdi, as a figure quite similar to the Christian "Antichrist," as described in the book of Revelations, and in the Judaic prophecies of Ezekial and Daniel. He then demonstrates that the returning "Jesus" (Isa) of Islamic eschatology is quite similar to the Christian "false prophet," who will, in fact serve the Antichrist in the conquest and destruction of Israel, presenting himself to the world as a non-divine "Jesus" who is subservient to Allah and his Mahdi. The author's interpretation of the two prophetic traditions is that the Mahdi will re-establish the Islamic Ottoman Empire, which was essentially built on the foundation of the Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire. This book is particularly frightening in light of the current turmoil in the Persian Gulf. For example, the militias of the Shi'a leader of Iraq, Mohktada al Sadr, isnow called the "Mahdi" army.Muhammed al Mahdi is supposed to return to earth, presumably reuniting the Sunna and Shi'a factions of Islam by his presence. The prophesied destruction of Israel in the end times is supposed to originate in Khorasan, modern day Iran.Skeptics will scoff at the whole concept of prophesy, and the perrenial concerns about the "end times," but, after reading this book, I certainly wonder if we are witnessing the beginning of a pan-Islamic reign of terror in the Middle East, and around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Most Informative
The author has made "The End Times", a very complicated subject, easy to understand.Supporting documentation is provided from both the Bible and the Quoran. A must read for anyone interested in the End Times.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jaw Dropper
This book is a stunning and straight to the point piece of work. Its a clear study of Muslims end-time doctrines, set against the backdrop of what the Judeo-Christian Bible says about the same period of time.If there's one book that you read about Islam this year, I would make it this one.Seriously, I've never read anything so scary, so real and pertinent for our times.Thankfully, the author didn't just string me out and leave me hanging. The book actually ends with some very good, yet sober inspiration.Amazing wild stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Starting with Moses & all the prophets......
I own four JPS Torah commentaries; Genesis, exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Whilst written by Jewish scholars, they are a huge help to the Christian preacher and Bible study scholar. In depth knowledge of the language, and traditions offer fascinating, whilst sad insights to the Jewish interpretation of the Torah. I would recommend these books very highly to anyone with a strong faith in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. They, even unknowingly clearly point to him as the Saviour of the world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Be Advised, Speciality is Key
Because of the degree of specialty of each of the writers (each are specialists on the Law), a decent (at least some) amount of Hebrew knowledge is key, to allow the reader to evaluate decisions made by the authors. It is also key to remember that these commentaries (following after the aims of JPS) are thoroughly Jewish and track the development of understanding for the passages discussed, though not necessarily to the detriment of the series.A great work, worth the shelf space of any Rabbi, Preacher, or Scholar.rq ladonai kvd

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and thought provoking
Of the five commentaries in the JPS series on the first five books of the Bible, Milgrom's is the best. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On!!!
I'm a big fan of Erwin McManus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Echoing a revolution
This book is not unlike McManus's other writing, yet it brings in a new inspiring energy to Christian living. McManus makes it clear that we can live life to the fullest by pursuing every moment. Living life passively is a waste of life. Living life actively creates new adventure and new opportunities for God to work. Erwin is the man!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate and Intense...A Great Book
Erwin Raphael McManus, author of UPRISING and THE BARBARIAN WAY, fills readers with hope and motivation in CHASING DAYLIGHT: Seize the Power of Every Moment. Previously published as SEIZING YOUR DIVINE MOMENT, the book challenges readers to look at their dreams through God's lenses and reflect on their true calling.

4-0 out of 5 stars The real deal
I originally got this volume as a way to practice my Greek a little bit more. What I found, obviously, was that LXX Greek is very different than GNT Greek. But the other find that I came to was that it was a marvelous translation of the Greek text.I was interested in just how much the Greek LXX different from the Hebrew scriptures.I like the volume a lot for it's translation and for the original text which parallels the English.I use it frequently in a library with the GNT and the Hebrew Scriptures as a handy 3 volume set for desk reference.I would say that you have to be a fairly serious scholar to warrant something like this but if you are then it is well worth the money and looks to be made to last.Definitely a must have for pastors and theologians!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source material

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Christianity, not "replacement theology"
To correct the previous reviewer's post, Dever's position on Israel is not some new "replacement" theology but the historic Christian understanding prior to the invent of 19th century dispensational theology. Dever views God's promises to Israel in light of a covenantal structure rather than a dispensational one. The Old Covenant completely fulfilled in Christ, must now be viewed through His fulfillment and establishment of the New.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could be a great book, but has one big flaw.
I really would like to give this book a five star review. The book is I will admit very helpful for those of us going into the seminary. Each chapter is a sermon based upon a book of the Bible. In other words, from Genesis forward, each book of the Bible is given an overview of its importance and its need in the larger text of the Bible. For those who will be ministers, this book helps you to see how you too can give an "overview" sermon on a particular book of the Bible. For those of you who will be teachers, this book helps you to gain extra information that can help you when teaching a class on Old Testament theology. The writing is clear, the sermons are engaging, and Pastor Mark Dever knows a lot of what he is talking about. It is good to know and have examples on how one can use the Old Testament in ministry, whether teaching or preaching, because so many people (sadly) have a harder time understanding the OT more than understanding the NT.Thus I would really like to give this book a five star review because I know that I will use it when I teach and minister the Old Testament when I finish up my seminary program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied for About 20 Years Using this Set
This is a great set.I got it about 20 years ago when it first came out, and, as a pastor of over 23 years, I say "Go for it!"Although I do not refer to this work every week, it comes in handy when I need to do a Hebrew word study. Because it is cross-indexed with Strongs, you can find the Hebrew words (and their definitions/expansions) without knowing a stitch of Hebrew.3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too short to be useful
This is a good Hebrew research tool. It's best feature is that it's only two volumes (compared to 11+ for the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament!). The entries are short compared to other theological lexicons and wordbooks, however, and you don't get as much depth as you do in other theological lexicons.5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it best or second best?
This is one of the two big (about 1000 cards/words) sets of pre-made Biblical Hebrew flash cards readily available for purchaseon Amazon.Recently I reviewed the other set,the Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary Cards by Dillard, which sell on Amazon for$12.95.The Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary Cards by Van Pelt and Pratico (part of the Zondervan product line) sell for $17.95, a bit more.As I noted in my review of the Dillard set,if I were still a starving college student, the five dollar difference alone might have inclined me toward Dillard. Now that I've got a real job in the real world, I sprung for BOTH of them. I have been using both of them in my personal study of Hebrew and I like them both, though each is a little different from the other with different strengths.

5-0 out of 5 stars As much a work of art as it is a religious text
Exquisitely handwritten and illuminated by Donald Jackson, Pentateuch: The Saint John's Bible is as much a work of art as it is a religious text. Commissioned by Saint John's Abbey and University as an expression of the Benedictine monks' daily focus on scripture and devotion to books, art, and religious high culture, Pentateuch presents sacred text in flowing English calligraphy, Hebrew book headings, and colorful marks studding the passages. The care put into each line is breathtaking. In oversized hardcover format, Pentateuch uses the sheer scope of its page to display the columns of perfectly penned scripture in vivid detail.

I [the Lord] will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:195-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most encouraging book I have read in years
I received this book last week as encouragement from a friend. While I have yet to overcome the current obstacles in my own life, I am reassured and even confident that God is in control.God will be glorified! While I have been involved in church and even ministry most of my life, the simplicity of the Israelites' story and the profound truths the author has pointed out firmly establish why I can have hope as a Christian. The truths about God's love and care have never been clearer or more meaningful to me as the author directs me to reflect on God's providence for His own. I have been so blessed by this book that I came to this website to see about getting multiple copies through which I may encourage others! As my friend wrote wrote, "May the Holy Spirit use this humble book to encourage you and give you greater faith and hope for the future - we know, because God cannot lie - that His plans for us are only good!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lewis gets to the heart of the matter
Thankfully this is not one of those books on the Psalms that will tell you that this or that Psalm is a lament or a cultic liturgy or an ode to someone bent on the succession of the Davidic monarchy. Lewis gets to the heart of matters, raising and answering questions that concern intelligent believers. For instance, what are we as Christians to make of imprecatory Psalms? Lewis considers not only those who write such Psalms, but also what has happened to them in life to get them to that point. Why so much talk about God's judgment? Lewis corrects the erroneous impression that judgment in the Psalms refers to God's punishment of evil doers. The primary sense is of a plaintiff pleading with God (the Judge) to pass judgment in their favor. What of the apparent self-righteousness of some of the Psalmists? Lewis says that all the talk about the Law is no Pharisaism but a the delight in Order: "The Order of the Divine mind, embodied in the Divine Law is beautiful." (53) Lewis' favorite is Psalm 19 and his writes about it in such a way as to make it come alive. The searching cleansing sun, is the searching cleansing Law. He identifies the key phrase as "there is nothing hid from the heat thereof" (19.6) That, for Lewis, describes the Law: :"luminous, severe, disinfectant, exultant (57).Finally, I must mention the surprising chapter on the subject of praise. Lewis writes that praise is not a matter of telling God how wonderful he is, but a way of expressing gratitude for what we care deeply about. Praise is something all human beings naturally do: we praise things and people that we value. When we praise them we complete our enjoyment of them through our words: "praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment" (81). Despite the fact that Lewis was not a theologian, he had a keener grasp of comparative religion, and Hebraic concepts than many biblical scholars. This is a book written by someone who has spent years praying the Psalms, not by someone who treats the Psalms as if they were an insect under a microscope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditative
Bonhoeffer really drives you into appreciating the spiritual depth of the Psalms and their Christ centred significance. I found the book difficult to put down. A great spiritual read.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sensitivity of a Poet and the Honesty of a Scholar
With the sensitivity of a poet and the honesty of a scholar, C.S. Lewis delves into the Psalms. In doing so, he is not afraid to raise uncomfortable questions, such as how to understand the apparent self-righteousness and gleefulness of many psalmists; or the question whether God is an egocentric monarch who demands people to praise Him as if He needed such praise. Other issues Lewis deals with are the concept of Judgment in the Psalms, as well as their portrayals of death, nature, and the beauty of God. He also devotes two chapters to understanding the prophecies, or second meanings, in the Psalms

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern Torah
I am very impressed with this Torah overall. While I would have never myself spent $60 on a Torah, I am very pleased that my mom did so just before she dropped out of Torah study class,
3-0 out of 5 stars A Missed opportunity
The original 1981 edition of the Plaut commentary on the Torah marked a dramatic improvement over the fundamentalist Hertz Torah commentary (The Pentateuch and Haftorahs: Hebrew Text English Translation and Commentary by Joseph H. Hertz) which it replaced in Reform Jewish congregations. It attempted to give both a traditional Jewish and a modern historical view of the text. In this connection, the frequent references to the widely recognized sources (J, E, D, P) is particularly welcomed in a Jewish study Pentateuch. However, it did have a number of weaknesses only some of which have been addressed in this new edition. These weaknesses included:
5-0 out of 5 stars An Example of Good Biblical Scholarship
The eidtors of THE TORAH: A MODERN COMMENTARY, REVISED EDITION did a credible job in producing this Torah commentary. This reviewer was skeptical due to concerns of "political correctness" vs. accuracy precision. When perusing this book, this reviewer was pleasantly surprised that changes were made in favor of accuracy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Correction
I haven't read the book, I just wanted to correct something.tvtv3 said that The Message is "not an actual translation" of the Bible. In truth it is not. A translation is a paraphrase taken from another English version of the text (like the NLT).When a text is translated from the original Hebrew and Greek it's called a version (NKJV, NIV).That's what The Message is, a version.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great meditation
Perhaps the best thing about this book is the premise it is written on -- that being a Christian means embarking on a journey, away from the world, toward the City of God.Not an original idea, but certainly one we can stand to be reminded of often, and one I'd love to see more books devoted to that.5-0 out of 5 stars correction of misinformation in review posted by tvtv3
tvtv3 says in his review, "Eugene Peterson uses his own translation of the Bible, The Message, as the scriptural references for the entire book."Read more
