I have recomended this book to my friends and family because I have learn a lot from it, and I consider itvery profound.

A Thoughtful Look at the Mother of All Languages.
Rabbi Daniel Lapin, known for his penetrating insights into the country's political clashes (see ``America's Real War''), gets back to more traditional rabbinic fare in ``Buried Treasure,'' an examination of key words in the Hebrew language.
Perfect title
The title for this book is perfect.Rabbi Lapin uses details about the Hebrew language as a springboard to wisdom.I first learned about Rabbi Lapin when he filled in for a local talkshow host.This book is not about politics as you would expect.Instead it is a collection of essays about relationships, parenting, and business.Read more

Asks the hard questions
In his book, On Job: God-talk and the Suffering of the Innocent, Gustavo Gutiérrez, an innovator of Latin American Liberation Theology, tries to discover the meaning of the Book of Job and how it can contribute to both how we talk about God and how we approach the reality of human suffering, in particularly, the suffering of the innocent. Gutiérrez shows readers how Job's experiences gradually cause him to doubt the theory of retribution and to evolve in his understanding of God's freedom, love, justice and gratuitousness.

Well written theological arguments
Gutierrez does an excellent job analyzing the Book of Job and explaining its relevant theological messages.Of special importance is the refuting of the social darwinistic doctrine of temporal retribution (which is the belief that people are rewarded or punished during their lives based on their sins).The theological arguments are rather complex, but are explained so clearly that they are easy to understand.While Gutierrez makes a connection between the message of the Book of Job and poverty in Latin America, this theme could have been expanded upon more in the book.All in all, this book is a very interesting read and is a must for those who wish to understand the Book of Job. ... Good job - 4.5 stars
Several Bible study groups in my church recently used this book as a guide.It is organized into daily material for 12 weeks (1 prophet/week) and focuses on their experiences more than teachings.The study is very in-depth.Each "day" will take 30-60 minutes for the diligent student.If you are planning a group around this guide, weekly discussions may be too often because of the depth.

good study
My men's group has been going through books like the EveryMan series and what not. We were getting to a point where we were really aching for some solid scripture vs. all the stories and examples presented in such books with light scripture. So we figured we'd start with this book.
Supplement with The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs.
Overall this is an excellent fill-in-the-blank workbook for Bible study groups on 15 themes from Proverbs. Topics addressed include family, friendship, wealth and poverty & life and death. Most quotes are fromthe NIV with a few from the RSV and KJV. Originally written in 1990 by RonRhodes, this popular booklet is in its seventh printing. Suggestions aremade on how to use the guide as an individual and as a group. For a morein-depth commentary on Proverbs a good companion is THE COMPLETE GUIDE TOTHE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. The comments are interesting and veryreadable and put things into a historical setting. It includes manyhistorical drawings and photos to give you a sense of the culture of thetime. Great Insight.
She does a great job telling the stories of these women with a feministic view, but notice the tombstones before the chapters.She takes the whole Bible out of context."She was wounded for our transgressions?"Not in my Bible.Great stuff, but the her "tombstones" upset me.

The Book of Jonah is a satirical "tale"
Henry Morris is a classic archetype of the right- wing "conservative" group.I've seen so many like him waste thousands of dollars in tuition and learn absolutely nothing -- because they are outright UN-teachable.

Good stories, but their Moral doesn't match
Wise Words is a collection of fables that, of course, have morals at the end. The stories are much better than Aesop. Leithart writes in a way that is easy to read aloud to your kids. My kids are totally captivated to the end of each one. I heartily agree that Wise Words is "Family Stories". Wise Words will be Read by Wise Parents!
If you love to read to your children, like you were read to long ago when you were little, than you will love this book! Remember those Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories that were the moral little tales meant to make us better kids? Well, these stories are reminiscent of those, and others, like Grimm's Fairy Tales, only based on the Proverbs of life found in the Bible. Each little story is the perfect 'little read' to go with that goodnight kiss and can be read in about five minutes. Each story has a moral and great little black and white illustrations that my kids loved. Our family loved this 'once upon a time' book and it will become your family favorite, too! ... Read more

A Fun Diversion
This is just one of many Inspirational Study Guides written by Max Lucado.After reading/working through this book I felt confident enough to purchase more of them.If your time in God's word is not what you would like it to be, then maybe a brief interlude into this book will help get you going.One of the better points is that the book does not try to push a lot of the authors theology onto you.The book helps you read through the book of romans, examine a few sections closely (it even gives two version of the bible), some inspirational stories, as well as question for thought.

Good Doctrine
I think Mr. Chambers's book is exciting because unlike most people, he actually read the book of Job.He uses Job's experiences not as a springboard in to general, vague, and platitudinous ramblings about suffering in general, but he discusses Job's suffering in specific.His loyalty and love of the text is reason enough to buy this book. Sometimes the healing process can hurt. Job was a person like us and allof us can see a little bit of Job in us. Chambers masterfully brings outthe fact that suffering IS NOT the curse of God or because we havecommitted wrongs. Job is shown to be moving CLOSER to God in histribulation rather than further from God [which some modern commentariesdo]--suffering, trials and problems ARE a part of human existence andbetter is the person who will see God ABOVE it as they must travel throughit. Interpretation forces the source material into a mould
It's a disturbing trend that qualified scholars who are clearly not UNintelligent are playing leapfrog with sources, to produce an impression that is unsupported by genuine source material.
Scholars Dream
This is an excellently documented book, written by a true scholar.All assertions are documented, and when the author makes an assertion, any contrary evidence is disclosed as well.
A Scholarly Tour De Force
If you have read Smith's "Early History of God" and been intrigued by his conception of the development of our notion of God during the Biblical period, "The Origins Of Monotheism" delivers a significantly more detailed analysis of the ancient Bronze Age texts from Ugarit and their influence on the culture of ancient Palestine in general, and Biblical texts in particular. Mr. Smith examines conceptions of the divine family and council of the gods, more general notions of ancient aspects of divinity, and the roles of various divinity. Especially insightful is his critique of James Frazier's category of "dying and rising" gods in the Near East. In his analysis of Isaiah, he gives considerable background into Mesopotamian views on the divinity of statues of gods, whithout prejudice. There is a lot more than I can list here in this book, but if you're interested in how the idea of one, all-powerful god came about, this is really essential reading. ... Read more

Extremely Insightful

Great book for learning to read and write Hebrew
This book is laid out in a very easy to use and progressive order.I have gone through half of the book and really enjoyed my studies.Each chapter has a new vocabulary list, grammar notes, examples and then plenty of exercises that cement the new concepts.The book will get you reading Hebrew very quickly with the Hebrew alphabet which is easier than reading hebrew with our english alphabet.It contains an English/Hebrew and Hebrew/English dictionary in the back with all of the vocabulary words.I wouldn't go very far without buying the answer key; it is very helpful.The vocabulary words are taken from the most used words in the Old Testament and the chapters contain verses from the Old Testament as reading exercises.

Biblical Hebrew: Step-By-Step-Volumn 2
I think it is an excellent book to learn to read the Book of Genesis in Hebrew. The format is excellent, with the word in Hebrew and English. It really brings the Book Of Genesis to life, and it also gives it meaning. Thanks Menahem Mansoor for writing ths book.
Not perfect but very useful and pleasant nonetheless
I have been using both major Biblical Hebrew manuals sold on Amazon.com: the EKS Primer and Hebrew Step by Step (HSBS). I started with EKS and bought HSBS when I was half through EKS. I study Hebrew on my own. Read more
