5-0 out of 5 stars a very good resource
This dictionary on the Pentateuch was very helpful in getting a historical perspective of these five books in the Old Testament. It added to my understanding of the books and individual passages, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A triumph of conservative OT scholarship
This would be an excellent resource for anyone engaging with the minimalists in regard to the historicity of Ancient Israel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Post Critical Naivete Meets the Old Testament
Brevard Childs, noted scholar of the Hebrew scriptures and biblical theologian, has provided the church with a helpful introdcution to his version of canon criticism applied to the Old Testament. Use of "Old Testament" over "Hebrew Bible" or "Tanak" here is deliberate because, as a true Yale-schooler (cf. Lindbeck and Frei), Childs deliberately writes as a Christian churchman and regards the Protestant canon as normative. His method is one of looking for the theological substance of a given Old Testament book as it is embedded in its final canonical form and arrangement.Seeking a divine communication "beyond the desert of criticism" (Ricoeur), he briefly introduces and then brackets out the various historical-critical issues presented by a given book. The title is somewhat misleading as this is not a true "Introduction" on the order of Eissfeldt, R.K. Harrison, or Longman/Dillard, but is properly an introduction to Childs' method of approach. Although OT scholarship has surpassed many of his historical-critical conclusions (hence 4 stars), Childs achieves theological profundity in many places. He also writes in an elegant, preachable prose that theologians, pastors, and students will find refreshing and welcome.
4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I am currently reading this book for a class, and I am enjoying it. Most of the students don't like it because it is hard to understand, but I like that it is challenging. He does a good job of laying out the information and allowing you to draw conclusions (though he makes some himself). Good book. Worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like it or hate it, you can't ignore it
This is one of the most influential general introductions to the Bible ever written. After more than 20 years, it is still much discussed and much misunderstood.Childs is a devout Christian who advocates a new approach to Biblical criticism, called Canonical Criticism, whereby you should consider books of the Bible and indeed the whole Bible in the form in which they are accepted as canonical (namely inspired and authoritative works) by Jews and Christians. You may agree or disagree with his approach, but read this book carefully and think hard; whatever your conclusions, you will gain a lot of insight.Of course, as its title indicates, it covers only the Old Testament. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great read!
When I originally saw an interview with Tommy Tenney on TBN, he was discussing the book and the upcoming movie (can't wait to see that!). This book is an easy read, and I found it difficult to put down! I love the way he puts everything into perspective (comparing himself and the love of his kids to the relationship GOD wants to have with us), and lots of other great information that I had not yet found in my new relationship with the LORD. If anyone is wanting to find a way to begin a intimate, loving relationship with GOD, this will surely help you put everything into focus! I highly suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Love Revelation
This is a book a Christian who has lost his/her first love or has lost their zeal for the Lord, must have in their library. It is an expanding version of the Book of Esther. Most of us who are Christians usually come to God with "give me" or "bless me" attitude instead of seeking with our whole heart the King Himself. This book is a "wake up and smell the coffee" type of book when it comes the relationship we have with the Lord Jesus but has lost because of our lack of focus and diligence.May those who read this book prepare their heart so they can find favor with the King of kings and Lord of lords; Jesus Christ, the Man!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair, but faulty, analysis of the Jewish Festivals of the Torah
First, please know that I agree wholeheartedly with the most basic premise of Chumney's book--that the Festivals commanded in the Torah point to Christ--and that it is not my intention to disparage the premise of this book or its basic theology. On the contrary, I agree with it VERY much.
1-0 out of 5 stars Edward Chumney's version of the seven festivals
This is a gentile perspective of the Jewish perspective. It is too cumbersome to read to the end. The transliterations are not accurate. It is definitely not something that a Jewish person would be able to get through, whether a believer or not a believer in Messiah. It is better to write from your own personal experiences and culture. When you try to enter into someone else's culture, it is not the same.5-0 out of 5 stars onenewman
This is an excellant book. Eddie Chumney writes very methodically which makes it easy to remember and understand. For anyone interested in their Hebraic Roots this one is the best in regard to understanding the Bibical past, present and future. All your questions will be answered as you read this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just lovely...
I agree with all of the other reviewers! You can't go wrong with this book.I bought it today in the gift shop of a NYC church and felt I had a treasure in my hands. It felt worth the $28.00 price. In fact, I started to cry when I read one of the passages...If you're sensitive to color, to form and beauty and if you like and enjoy the psalms, then it's really a treat.I had the saleswoman wrap it up as a gift...to myself!!She said she was giving it the "royal treatment" as she wrapped it.Yes, King David's psalms deserve that amount of care and love, and the artist surely had that in mind in the creation of this lovely keepsake. When you buy it, you are buying Time and Love and Honor to the Beloved. That's why it feels so good to hold it in your hands. And, I happen to think it brings out the Word of God...just my feeling. Thanks for reading my comments!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Psalms of David
Beautifully done, the calligraphy was sometimes hard to read, but the art work and the detail were lovely. The story behind the book makes it even more of a treasure for your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from Solomon
For some reason this work by Allender and Longman is less well known than others of this interesting writing tandem. That's a shame. "Bold Purpose" uses their by-now common co-writing style of in-depth exegesis alongside intriguing narrative story telling. This time they apply their skills to the book of Ecclesiastes and the topic of our frantic search for meaning. Like Solomon, Allender and Longman expose our broken cisterns along with enticing us to turn to Christ, our Spring of Living Water. This book is well worth getting your hands on and digging through if you have ever asked, "What's the point?"
5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely take the time to read this!
This book is a thinker! It sheds a totally new light on the book of Ecclesiastes, and talks deeply about life in a way that all of us can relate to.The balance of non-fiction and fiction keep it muchointeresting.I read this book slowly on my lunch breaks, and each day I'dgo back to work in a quiet, introspective mood. The book covers so much,it's hard to really summarize it.It will cause you to rethink the way youlive, and how you define true Christianity. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Read This Before You Buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible
An amazing way to read and understant the Psalms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Praying with Christ
In this beautiful little book, Bonhoeffer guides the Christian to the Scriptures for lessons in how to pray. He affirms that the Lord's Prayer is the primary prayer of the Christian, which he asserts contains every prayer that a Christian ought to pray. Bonhoeffer also makes a startling but wise claim that jolts us out of the narrowness of our focus in prayer: "The richness of the Word of God ought to determine our prayer, not the poverty of our heart." Thus we find the book of Psalms to be a rich treasury of prayers that are part of God's inspired word, and therefore a true place to learn how God would have us pray. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Read the psalms out loud as a prayer to God
Certain parts of the book helped me to desire reading the Psalms as prayers to God. If you are into lecture type reading then this book is for you. What I like to see in books is the person's walk with God - his reading of the Psalms and how they affected him in learning to trust and love God. I did not finished the book, BUT I am reading the Psalms as prayers to God.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book that set me free to pray
Until I read this book, I felt that I ought to pray, even wanted to pray, but when I sat down to do it prayer seemed so complicated and burdensome, and I would come away with a haunting feelingthat I never got it "right".This book taught me that prayer means listening, and responding to God--not just talking at him, or coming at him with lists. It set me free to rest in the presence of God, something I often enough ended up doing anyway, but then would feel guilty for. After all, wasn't I supposed to be "praying?"Thank you to Eugene Peterson for this beautiful, well-written, well-expressed book, which is a joy to read.I have heavily underlined and re-read my copy 3 times. It is fresh each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars open the door...
I have to agree with the reviewer of August 7, 2001's enthusiasm for this book. I first read "Answering God: The Psalms As Tools for Prayer" when I checked it out of a local library. The book so moved and changed me that I had to stop midway, turn the book back in at the library, and order a copy. Read more

Many Books on the Tabernacle but this one is such detail of describing of Christ. Uses alot of scripture. Awesome book. Well not resell. I will use as a refrence book along with the Bible

5-0 out of 5 stars An extensively researched presentation
The Tabernacle: Shadows Of The Messiah, Its Sacrifices, Services, And Priesthood by David M. Levy examines the description and ministries of the Tabernacle as portrayed in fifty chapters of the Old Testament. This extensively researched presentation, offering full-color photographs and a wealth of archaeological evidence as well as close study of the Old Testament itself, sheds new light on the sacrifices, services, and priesthood of this ancient institution which figures so prominently in Judeo-Christian religious history. The Tabernacle is a welcome and highly recommended addition to Biblical Studies reading lists.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest
A pretty good book. But, if you are not Protestant you might be in for a slightly rough read. The author dwells heavily on the notion of legal imputation of the righteiousness of God.The book is not as organized as I hoped it would be.I was left with some unanswered questions about the priesthood and the sacrificial system. Also, there were not enough diagrams here for my liking. But still and all, I got a lot out of it. ... This book is essential for students of Hebrew. This belongs with HALOT and Waltke/O'Connor as a book that the exegete cannot live without.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This thorough and scholarly resource book is an invaluable guide to the process of determining the meaning of Old Testament passages. It contains examples and though it is written for scholars and pastors, it is accessible (and provides helpful guidance) to the layperson, such as myself, that desires to develop a less superficial understanding of scripture. The bibliography in the back is terrific and is probably worth the cost of the book by itself. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Practical, Down to Earth Commentary on Proverbs
Gloria Copeland has presented us with a well-researched, highly readable study on Proverbs. If you don't mind her views on healing and prosperity, you'll find this book a very good read. The cover and binding also makes for an attractive coffee table book, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is more in-depth.
Gloria Copeland does a nice job exploring the themes from Proverbs and how they apply to your life in a practical way. One drawback is that she uses the King James Version as her primary starting point which is the hardestto understand and least accurate. However, in her commentary she does drawon the NIV and Amplified to make her points. For a more in-depth andscholarly study of Proverbs read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OFPROVERVBS by Cody Jones. The comments are interesting and very readable, and they put things into a historical setting. Jones picks out variouscharacters from the Bible who illustrate the points of Solomon's wise andwitty observations. He includes many historical photos to give the reader asense of the culture of the time and includes 6 translations in parallel toaid understanding.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Study Companion
The title is a smoke screen to purchase an item that is not needed should you have the Commentary itself. All of the essays are duplicated from the back of the Commentary itself and thereby making the book redundant. I was highly disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So powerful and refreshing
This Bible study is such a blessing.I have read the book of Esther many times, but this is the first time that I have taken such a simple but powerful look at the real Esther and just what she was all about. She was a faithful servant and followed every instruction to the letter, but she had back bone like no other. To sit across a feast table and accuse Haman of his wrong doing showed so much strength. This book is truly a book of Strength and Beauty. So simply put and easy to apply to our own lives. Elizabeth George is a wonderful writer for today's women. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic by Kitchen on the Old Testament's basic accuracy
The well respected English scholar--Kenneth Kitchen--has penned another masterpiece in this book on the inherent reliability of the Old Testament. This study is characterised by his renowned attention to detail and well supported arguments which caters primarily to the scholar/academician rather than the average lay book reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary work !
Encyclopedic in scope, K.A Kitchen's masterful study of the Hebrew Bible's authenticity must stand as a testament to the ultimate truth of ancient Judaic scripture. Leaving no stone unturned, Kitchen presents an overwhelming abundance of evidence, both textual and archeological, that systematically demolishes the erroneous viewpoints put forward by current revisionist theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very well done.
The author is one of the most knowledgable individuals in the world on the subject of the Ancient Near East, and the book contains a wealth of scholarly information and support for the general historical veracity of the Old Testament from a non-fundamentalist standpoint. Well worth reading for those interested in the subject. Also, Kitchen wins the latest point/counterpoint articles in Biblical Archaeology Review (July/August 2005).

5-0 out of 5 stars Why?
To meaningfully ask the question "why?" in a religious context, one must first be familiar with Job--there is simply nothing in scripture that approaches the question of human suffering with such detail.Sadly, Mr. Mitchell correctly notes that the original book is long gone--victimized by the mistakes of translators.Yet the story remains universal; any reader can sympathize with Job's dilemma.
5-0 out of 5 stars It did the job
I finally found a version that encouraged me to spend enough time with the work to get to know it and also to appreciate the poetry. The introduction and notes were also helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars From John in Virginia
This book intelligently discusses the myths that surround the Book of Job.Stephen Mitchell does a credible job dispelling these. Surprisingly many have entered the mainstream of Christian belief. This has distorted the original intent of the author(s) of the Book.

3-0 out of 5 stars All right
I received the book in good condition and in a fairly timely manner, but the book didn't come with the cover sleeve.I have the whole series, but this one is now the oddball without that cover.I don't know what happened there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misrepresented
When I ordered this book, I assumed it would have been written by a Jewish author and Published by a Jewish company.I am sadly mistaken. It comes from a Christian publishing company and the author is Christian.I havn't read the book yet and will be leary of details.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pass the Bread, Raven
I went into this read with little or no expectations. After all what else can be said about Elijah that hasn't been said already?? Well let me tell you that Swindoll found a way to breathe life into an old story. It was more than a book, more than a read. It was more like a sneaky way of writting a devotional that challenges your soul at the end of every chapter. I hated picking up the book for 2 reasons: It stirred areas in my soul that I had forgotten to take care off. And that with the reading of a new chapter I was getting closer to the end. I will be reading the book again but at a snail's pace so as not to miss a drop from this refreshing book. ... Read more
