4-0 out of 5 stars The Hebrew Bible as a Burdensome Source for Israel's History

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening
The book is aimed at looking for archaeological evidence to the stories told in the bible. The conclusions that the authors reach are sometimes controversial due to lack of archaeological evidence to support such stories. One can still claim that even though evidence is not found to support certain stories, there is no conclusive assuranec that those events never took place (even though the authors offer findings that contradict certain biblical claims). However, the authors' perspective is based on scientific findings that are certainly eye opening. Due to the challenge of finding conclusive evidence when researching antiquity, much of the authors' findings cannot be viewed as facts, rather, are open for interpretation by the reader. The authors also offer different opinions of other historians and archaeologists, which strengthens the notion that much of the distant past is quite unclear and open for interpretation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All
This book should be in the libraries of all serious students of religion and the Bible. There were points made and supported by archeology that might make the believers of an inerrant Bible think. The authors did not intend to change a persons faith only to point out the Biblical stories may be more allegory than historical.E.g., they propose the early writings of the OT were written c. 700 BCE.They also suggest the early Israelites were probably Canaanites. The points are supported by archaeological studies that may be more academic than the casual reader comprehends but doesn't burden the reading for the casual reader.I suggest this book will be a standard along with Friedman's "Who Wrote the Bible." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very good study
I have all of the books in the Life Lessons series, and I also have the Inspirational Study Bible (NKJV).This study, as well as the rest in the series, is very well put together. What I especially love about this isthat if you don't have your Bible with you, that's ok. The scriptureportion is printed right there in the book. There are 2 columns ofscripture for each portion of the study. One column is the NKJV (New KingJames Version) and the other is NCV (New Century Version). So, you haveyour choice to read between the 2 of those, or you can read both to see ifone version emphasizes things differently. Its a very good idea.Thereis a question before you begin the lesson to make you ponder something thatis related to the lesson which will be presented. Then, you read theportion, then answer questions. The back of the book has answers, orsuggested answers, to some of the questions asked. This can be used forpersonal study, or can be used for group study. 5-0 out of 5 stars A very good study

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift for Christians
The Book of Job has remained a mystery to me regardless having read
5-0 out of 5 stars Compact and Comprehensive
Jung's "Answer to Job" was recommended to me by friends, and after some procrastination, I finally decided to give it a read. My only regret is that I waited so long to get around to it. I was surprised by both the candor and the comprehensive sweep of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answer to Job
Jung's life journey was an investigation into who and what we are as human. Like it or not, in discovering who we are, he had to confront God as part of that discovery process. I can understand why Answer to Job caused so much controversy. Don't shake the status quo after it has found an easy to accommodate understanding of God. Many have shaken that tree and were martyred. Or in one case, crucified.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first class resource
Exodus is a pivotal book, a key volume not only in the Pentateuch but in the whole of the Hebrew bible. And Douglas Stuart is a first rate evangelical Old Testament scholar (who has already penned commentaries on Ezekiel and some of the Minor Prophets). Put the two together and you have an important and powerful combination.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Conservative Exodus commentary
The thing that most impressed me about Douglas Stuart's commentary on Exodus for the New American commentary series (Broadman & Holman) is the easy proficiency with which Dr. Stuart exegetes how a particular Hebrew word or phrase should be taken in context, weaves in the ANE background, and demonstrates the way the theology not only relates to Exodus and the rest of the Pentateuch, but to entire biblical corpus. Those familiar with Dr. Stuart's prior work will not be surprised by the depth of scholarship undergirding his insights here. For a conservative commentary that is sufficiently meaty but still easy on the eyes, one could do no better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful compendium of original source material
I obtained this volume of translations of Ancient Near Eastern texts and pictures along with its companionVolume I An Anthology of Texts and Pictures which was first published in 1958.This volume, which was published in 1975,includes translations of more recently discovered material selected from the 1969 anthologyof Supplementary Texts and Pictures Relating to the Old Testament.5-0 out of 5 stars A useful compendium of original source material
I bought this book along with its companion:Volume II A New Anthology of Texts and Pictures, because it was time for me to see for myself what the the original sources had to say about the Ancient Near East.4-0 out of 5 stars A Stimulating Resource
Volume II or "The Ancient Near East" is a good companion to Volume I, containing mythic, legal, and monumental information from the Middle East Bronze and Iron Ages. It really puts youback there to read actual letters and contracts, or to see the developments in poetic, narrative and visual arts. The only real problem is the lack of consistent dating infomation, particularly for the artwork. It makes it difficult to form a conceptual picture if things are presented in what appears to be a random order. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for conservative Christians
If you are a conservative Christian with strong fundamentalist leanings you will find this an excellent survey of the Old Testament books. If you are not then you will probably find difficulty with many portions of it.However, you may still find value in the large number of photographs, charts, tables, and graphs.5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Scriptures.
Most Christians enjoy reading the Bible. However, just about everyone who reads the Bible has trouble understanding how all the different names, concepts, dates, numbers, etcetra fit into the overall picture. For people who don't own a study Bible that explains many of these textual references, Paul N. Benware's SURVEY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT is a great book to have. The book is very compact and rather small, making it easy to carry around. It's written in modern English and is easy to read. It's full of pictures, charts, and diagrams as well as a brief overview of each book of the Old Testament. Even for those who have a study Bible and are familiar with the Old Testament, SURVEY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT is a nice companion piece to have as a reference. After all, you can't always chug Strong's Concordance, a book of Ancient Atlases, and other materials with you everywhere you go. But you can bring along this small companion piece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study of the New Testament
Paul Benware has written an excellent review of each book of the Christian Scriptures (New Testament). He discusses the authorship, date, purpose, outline, themes and summary of each book. This survey is written from aFundamentalist Christian point of view. For example, the author belivesthat Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were written by authors with those names.A liberal Christian would not find this book to be particularly helpful. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ignores the last 35 years of archaeological study
The author unquestionably accepts the Biblical Exodus or Conquest theory about the development of ancient Isreal that has been rejected by almost every scholar since the 1920's.He then adds his own speculation on top of this mythical foundation. The result is a string of rather silly assumptions that add absolutely nothing to the study of this comlex subject. In fairness it would make a great script for a movie if only Steve Reeves were around to appear in it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A big help
Brown Driver & Briggs (BDB) contains a lot of information, but its arrangement can cause a person to tear one's hair out in clumps, especially for those of us who do not use our Hebrew every day.Einspahr helps you find the listing and discussion on a particular vocable quickly and easily.Unfortunately, this volume list only words used ten times or more.I found myself making notes for words used less often. There are errors in the volume and I also found myself writing to the publisher to make them aware of the mistakes I found. On balance, this volume makes Hebrew less frustrating.I wish it had been available when I took my first year Hebrew course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Ancient Hebrew is not an easy language to master, and so it is often useful to have a BDB Hebrew Lexicon at hand. But that too can be difficult to use (especially if you are relatively new to Hebrew). This Index is the link between the text you are working on, and the detailed knowledge "hidden" in the Lexicon. The trouble is, the Index is so helpful I feel almost guilty using it. (Hebrew shouldn't be easy!) Just one provision, if you are over 45 you will probably want to go out and buy a magnifying glass, the print is extremely small, and can be difficult to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars soooo helpful for using BDB
This index is so very helpful that it verges on cheating. Anyone who has translated Torah knows how very difficult it can be to strip out the grammatical parts of the word to get to the right root. BDB is useful andinteresting, but my havurah still sometimes had difficulty getting to theright entry. I found this Index to BDB at a used book store, and it hasreally speeded up our translation! It lists each BDB reference inchapter-verse order. You can instantly see which words in the passage youare translating are defined in BDB, including page number and definitionnumber. There are still difficult words that are not indexed (because theyare not referred to in BDB), so we still get some practice in figuring outthe roots! But the Index to BDB (along with the BDB, of course) is veryuseful in getting the surface translation so that we can start looking atthe meaning of the text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars NIV Harmony of the Gospels
I enjoyed this book and find it full of information that is useful. It is a good reference to use along with your bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener
I am currently reading through this book, which is really a combination of each of the gospel accounts in chronological order. So far the book has been very enlightening and has taught me more about Christ than I would have learned by reading one gospel at a time. There is something about reading each account side by side that really brings the stories to life, and making Jesus more tangible (at least in my mind). If you want to know more about Jesus, His disciples, and you want to grow closer to the Lord this is a great book to help with all of these things.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for studying the life of Jesus.
This helpful book arranges the four gospels in parallel columns, following the life of Jesus. It is a very helpful resource for anyone desiring to know what Jesus said and did in chronological order. Also, the bookprovides excellent essays and notes about various interesting andcontroversial issues involved in studying Jesus' life.It uses the NewInternational Version in the text, making it available to all Englishreaders.I use this book as an important part of the course I teach toministerial students on the life of Jesus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Commentary on the Book of Beginnings
Henry Morris is a gifted writer, researcher, and scientist and all of these God-given attributes come out beautifully in his classic commentary on Genesis. I often preach, teach, and write, so anytime the subject is in the first book of the Old Testmant, I immediately reach for my copy of The Genesis Record. It is a thoughtful, accurate guide written from the Creationist Perspective. 2-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing the Genesis Record
When my instructor told me to read the Genesis Record, I became very excited as I thought I would read about early Phil Collins music. Then I realized, I was actually supposed to read a book by Henry M. Morris. If Biblical scholars were sold at K-Mart, K-Mart would have shelves full of Morris. This guy is an engineer who thinks he can interpret the first and most important book of the Bible. He believes in literal interpretation of the Bible. He takes the big risk of discussing only the obvious passages of the Bible. As if those passages needed interpretation.4-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening commentary on the ENTIRE book of Genesis
You'd think that this book only covered the first 2 chapters of Genesis from reading the reviews.Debating aside, I think everyone ought to read the book of Genesis all the way through. It is truly a book of beginnings, and the human experience. There are many interesting explanations presented here, such as the "closing signatures" of each section "these are the generations of <>" fill in the person who wrote that portion. There is the novel explanation of Abraham and Sarah's bodies being miraculously rejuvenated back to youth to have Isaac, instead of the usual picture of two elderly parents. Then there is a long section on Jacob and an attempt at a scientific explanation of the spotted/speckled recessive traits and the striped rods being some kind of cattle and sheep aphrodisiac. The section on Joseph is rich and full of interest, with a detailed analysis of the brothers' two trips to Egypt and how Joseph's harsh questioning and tests brings them to repentance and finally reconciliation. So there is a lot to this book than just the 6 days of creation, if people would read further, they'd find many interesting interpretations to help them gain a better understanding of the events in Genesis and hence the Bible.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Commentary - Covers several views
This set of books, if it is the complete set, takes the scripture and gives multiple interpretations from several different viewpoints. This could be why the Southern Baptist Convention no longer sells it.It is an increadible resource for those wanting to delve further into what the Bible means and why others believe what they do.It has helped me understand not only the interpretations, but the histroy given with each section discussed is invaluable in understanding the way the people in the bible saw things. It's an excellent resource, if for nothing else, for the way a church should be run and the role it should serve. If you're wanting to understand better what it is you hear in your research and study. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary Tool for teaching or studying the Bible
I first purchased this chart book back in my college days (several years ago). Loved it then, and even more so now. Thank you Lord for tools like this. I've used it many times in bible study (either personal study or facilitating classes). You just can't beat the charts, brief explainations, clear format. The New Testament companion is great, as well as the Church History version, Theology version and Philosophy version. Definitely essentials in every person's library. And if not for you, get it for your kids. They really need to see things visually to understand anything anyway!

5-0 out of 5 stars These CHARTS are the best. Get them all.
Were all biased anyway. The question is which bias is the best bias. Catholics or anyone who "may not benefit as much" from this tool should wonder why not? I don't think God wrote a book hard to be understood. If you are a Catholic, Charismatic, or of the "Orthodox" persuasion, and you cannot "benifit as much" from this chart due to "bias", then perhaps you need to explore the differences between what makes a Christian different from a Catholic. These are not merely terms. A "Christian" is not an umbrella that encompasses a vast majority of mainline denominations or cults or movements or sects, as many people would have others to believe. God in His word tells us who are His. It would be best for folks to check it out. (Jn.1:12; 3:16; Eph.2:8 etc.)----anyway. As the Charts are a great series I personally own three of the set or series, and they are outstanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking
D.A. Carson is a Canadian missionary and scholar working in Christian higher education in the U.S. He has been a lecturer in New Testament at Trinity International University for a number of years. He now serves as research professor of the divinity school. The Gagging of God, subtitled, "Christianity Confronts Pluralism", may be considered Carson's twentieth century magnum opus, not so much because of the book's size, but on account of the substantive challenge with which it deals. The writer is seriously concerned about what he perceives to be the inroads pluralism is making within the ranks of Christianity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biblical figures as real people
Wiesel has conceived an amazing and important set of human beings from several Biblical figures. People, strong and weak, right and wrong, very much flesh and bones, are presented from the unique perspective of a Holocaust survivor who sees human natures in the extremes of good and evil. What was it like for Job? How flawed were the Forefathers? And how did their personal relationships with the Almighty lead to inner peace? Most remarkably, a portrait of the Lord emerges as few scholars have painted. The juxtaposition of, for example, Moses and Abraham, with their individualities crisply drawn is a new level in Biblical scholarship, and most relevent for us today. When faced with the challenges of life, the people of the Bible are as human as each and all of us. This book is truely a gift to mankind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Vivid Imagery
Elie Weisel has a very descriptive style. He is able to describe the many possible interpretations of the characteristics of Adam, Cain, Abel, Isaac, Joseph, Jacob, Esau, Moses, and Job.Especially interesting is the description of how G-d created Eve.Why from the ribs as opposed to the eyes, head, neck, etc..Interesting stuff and I won't spoil it by giving you readers the analogy. The snake's role in Eve leading Adam astray is dealt with from many interesting points of view. The punishment of Cain is quite unique according to Weisel's theory.5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Midrash in the Modern Age
Elie Wiesel is one of the most important thinkers of the modern era. His insights into the human condition are possibly the most profound to come from the HolocaustRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Trinity of Life
Peter Kreeft has the ability to sort out the weighty matters of life in a smooth and concise way.In the "Three Philosophies of Life:..." he manages to reveal the meaning of three Old Testament books, "Ecclesiastes," "Job," and "Song of Songs (Solomon)," and apply them lyrically to the patterns of our lives. His books are so stirring that they manage to sort us out as well as the subject matter. He shows us three aspects of life:"Much of our life is vanity," "the meaning of suffering," and "the manifestation and importance of love."He challenges the reader without ever being opaque--not an easy task with such deep material.Being straighforward and smooth, he seldom uses parenthetical matter to interrupt his own thoughts. This is a brilliant work from a brilliant author and teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars An existentially satisfying book for the Christian...
Kreeft's book is an insightful exegesis of some of the most difficult biblical text to understand. In a rough outline form, let me share what I found to be some of the best aspects of the book:
4-0 out of 5 stars a rewarding read
Three Philosophies of Life looks at three of the most profound books of wisdom - Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Songs - in an attempt to answer one of the deepest and most important questions humanity can ask. Each of the three books represents a state of the soul: Ecclesiastes as Hell, Job as Purgatory (as in, any suffering that purges, not necessarily the Catholic sense of Purgatory), and Song of Songs as Heaven. 'All three conditions,' Kreeft writes, 'begin here and now on earth.'In this book, Kreeft takes us on a journey (reminiscent of Dante's Divine Comedy) to find meaning - not only the meaning of life itself, but the meaning of our lives, of my life.Of your life.He discusses the all-vanity philosophy of Ecclesiastes, the theodicy of Job, and the love story of Song of Songs in relation to our lives on earth, our search for meaning, and our need for a personal relationship with God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious scholarship for the serious Bible scholar
An essential tool for the Biblical reader who has some knowledge of Hebrew, but not enough for the all-Hebrew Even-Shoshan Old Testament concordance. As an example of its usefulness, the seven Hebrew words translated "praise" in the King James version can be easily traced individually, and understood thoroughly. The frequency of appearance is clearly marked, in all of its forms, making HEC tremendously valuable as Strong's requires the scholar to do a lot of counting over various forms of the word.Again, an example shows that _hll_ or _halal_ appears 89 times as praise, or praised, or praises, etc. Each of these forms would have to be counted individually in Strong's.The same holds true for the other words for praise, namely, tehilla, yadah, zamar, shabach, todah, and barak.4-0 out of 5 stars Very good.
I enjoyed this very much.It shows you exactly how many times the wordappears in the NIV and KJV and how it looks in the original Hebrew/Aramaic. Exhaustive doesn't even begin to describe this book. The only problemwith this book is the blatent disregard for the Divine Name, Yahweh, whichis just translated as "the LORD."Nevertheless, it is animportant part of any Bible reader's library.5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Excellent
This book provides a whole new perspective to the Old Testament. It shows the real words of God before they were translated. If you enjoy reading God's word and don't hard reading this book is for your. I highly reccomendfor people who have a strong knowledge on the Bible. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a good help for beginners
The "quick and dirty" of the stranger markings of BHS. For those not well-versed in Latin, German, or Aramaic, this little reference is quite handy. Scott does not bother with the history or evolution of the Tiberian Masorah or other markings, but rather simply gives what is necessary to successfully derive meaning from both the Masorah Magna and Masora Parva (but not the Masorah Finalis) as well as some of the accentation and other markings. The most useful feature of this reference work is its size - it's very small and slim, so much so that it may have a propensity to get lost frequently.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool
If one is interested in decoding the minutia around the BHS text, then this book is an invaluable resource to have available.1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much $$ for Getting So Little
This text has good and bad points. It's translation of terms in the back, the background information on text pointing, and the briefer listing and explanation of the MS accent system is probably less overwhelming than other such references. But in the end, one would purchase this overpriced book with the purpose of learning the uses of the accents in Hebrew pointed text. The book comes up way short.Read more
