5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, and incredibly informative
Recently taking a biblical archaeology course with Dr. Zevit, and referring frequenlty to this book for further understanding, I found this book easy to read, well organized and insightful.I recommend it highly to anyone interested in learning more about ancient Israel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zevit's Magnum Opus
Zevit has written his magnum opus. His avowed thesis is to establish the ethnic "particularity"(a new ethnic group in Canaan) of a people. He views the conclusions of some archaeologists such as Broshi, Finklestein and others as being inadequate. The central issue being: are there "ethnic markers" clearly present, as revealed in the work of Syro-palestinian archaeologists, demonstrating the distinctiveness of the tribes of Israel. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great series
I am working my way through this series and just finished this book and the one on Joshua. The text is great for laymen who need to brush up on basic bible stories and events that we've heard since early days in Sunday School but have forgotten over time.It is great for day-to-day application.Getz does a great job of illustrating the meaning behind the stories.I am reading Elijah now and recommend it as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
First off, let me say this is written from a Mormon (LDS) perspective/belief.It is one of the most intriguing books I have read in a long time.It took me a while to get through it as I questioned so many things written in it, concepts I've never thought of or considered. For that reason alone I enjoyed this book.I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased the second one (Mortal Journey).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Treatise on Mother Eve
Beverly Campbell has done an extraordinary job in detailing the events as they occurred in the Garden of Eden. She plumbed the depths of historical documents, the words of apostles and prophets, linguists specializing in ancient Hebrew and more to grant us a unique insight into Eve's mind and the dynamic between Mother Eve and Father Adam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Milk
About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rich insights, but must be gleaned with patience
One thing is clear from reading Ravi Zacharias's book, I, Isaac, Take Thee, Rebekah: marriage is hard work. Using the biblical story of Isaac and Rebekah, Zacharias attempts to reveal God's will for marriage.
5-0 out of 5 stars not an average marriage/dating book
I bought and read this book last summer, going through some difficult mental and emotional battles involving not dating anyone or being married yet. This book was brilliantly and beautifully crafted and gave me hope and practical principles I could use now to prepare for marriage later.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is review needed?
While Spurgeon's magnum opus is neither technical nor devotional it can meet either of those needs. It is inconceivable that anyone would have an interest in the Psalms and not have these volumes on the shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great work...
This is a great commentary series on the Psalms and has the same feel as Spurgeon's sermons.Great resource for any teacher and pastor to prepare in study for the Psalms.Very detailed, which I can't say the same for other commentaries done during this same time period.

3-0 out of 5 stars Academic; Assumes a LOT of its Readers
I agree with the one other reviewer of this book on the PSALMS and take no issue with that review. However, I wish to review from another angle......that of the beginner to the study of scripture. This book is not a book for beginners. It is very academic. When I purchased this book, because it is short, less than 100 pages, I assumed it would be sort of a "primer" introduction to the study of the Psalms. That it is NOT!My Bible study class is studying the Psalms at my church and I am sure most people in the class studying the Psalms for the first time would be quite put off by this book. One thing that I find quite troublesome, even for an academic treatment is this:Brueggemann cites name of other authors in the text and then does not place a citation for that author reference in the bibliography. The practice of doing this is drilled into any high school student writing their first term paper and Brueggemann is lax in this regard as is the publisher who allowed that oversight and lack of rigor by Brueggemann, an academic author who should know better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brueggemann Shines Again
Barbara and I both avidly admire The Psalms and Dr. Brueggemann. Our greatest expectation for the summer is to hear him preach and teach at the Presbyterian Conference on Music and Worship at Montreat. I am deeply indebted to him for his keenly inspired commentary on GENESIS. For two quarters of Preaching Genesis, I have tuned-into his studies in depth to prepare several sermons and hear young students at MERCER/McAFEE School of Theology preach their sermons inspired by Brueggemann.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and enlightening
In a field where back biting is the rule and many scholars simply dismiss the writing of their opponents out of hand, William Dever stands out for his careful critiques of the theories of those with whom he disagrees. As with his other works, Prof. Dever engages in a point by point refutation of those who differ from his positions. At the same time, as in previous works, he reveals the political/ideological motivations of many other scholars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Appreciate the Data
This book is appreciable because it tries to maintain a middle ground between secular minimalists and Biblical "true believers."It is very polemic, bashing other scholars and their theories, which in some ways detracts from the book, but the presentation of archaeological data is the primary reason it's a good read.
2-0 out of 5 stars What's the point, Bill?
In this cleverly titled book by veteran archaeologist William Dever, we are presented with a novel theory for Israelite origins.Dever spends the first two thirds of his work on building up the introduction. This isn't necessarily bad, if the payoff is big at the end.Indeed, he surveys many of the most important sites around Canaan, introducing us to the history and culture of this region and different schools of thought regarding Israelite origins before progressing to a solid and sustained critique of Finkelstein's nomad-sedentarization model. The problem with the book, however, begins with the final third, where Dever enthusiastically describes his theory, which basically holds that the "proto-Israelites" were in fact sedentarized Canaanites who fled to the hill-country in the wake of the general late-Bronze Age collapse.Although the first part of the book, which served as the build-up, consisted of discussions of archaeological sites and critiques based on lack of evidence, Dever introduces his theory (which takes up a measly eleven pages) with an up-front admission that it also lacks evidence!"My theory, is speculative, of course; and like Medelhall's and Gottwald's peasant revolt it has little direct archaeological evidence to support it." (179) "Nevetheless," Dever assures us, "this scenario is quite realistic". (ibid)Thanks! Now one has to wade through the rest of his discussion knowing in advance that it lacks evidence. But wait a minute, didn't Dever just spend a hundred pages attacking other archaeologists because their theories lacked evidence? One can buy into his theory or not, that's not the point. It's more about how little we really know about the origins of Israel outside the biblical record, which when rejected, creates a vacuum that can be filled with any "realistic" and "scholarly" sounding theory. If you buy this book, use it for the archaeological survey and critique of Finkelstein.Just remember to continue Dever's critique onto himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Between Wenham and Hamilton
No doubt Wenham and Hamilton have written the best conservative's commentary on Genesis. Longman said that "between Wenham and Hamilton, Genesis is well covered."
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students and preachers
*Many authors suppose to write for scholars, pastors and laymen, yet few accomplish their goal. Hamilton succeeds. This commentary is of sufficient depth and technicality for scholars and students. The introduction in particular does a wonderful job of addressing theological themes within the book. One very useful feature, not usually found in scholarly OT commentaries, is a section on 'New Testament Appropriation" at the conclusion of every few chapters. Hamilton also includes useful applicatory points and easy-to-read and understand chapter and section summaries. IMHO this is the best commentary on Genesis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Christian's Genesis Commentary Par Excellence
This excellent work treads the line carefully, taking into account Textual Criticism, Ancient Near East backgrounds and parallels, New Testament Appropriation of texts and critical scholarship in a way that leaves the reader well informed on issues.Sometimes comes to "interesting" conclusions, but if not near a reference library, this is the commentary on the book to have (over Wenham, Spieser, or Westermann).Especially helpful to have 1 more if possible (I'd take the JPS Torah series to get a solid Jewish and historical approach) to compare against, but Hamilton is solid and orthodox in his conclusions, avoiding straying too far from either extreme, though leaving ultra-conservative evangelicals out in the cold with some of his statements. (see esp. Gen 1-3; Oi) ... Read more

This work will guide you into the massive amount of ancient textual material that is relevant to understanding the ancient world of the Hebrew Bible and the resources that are available with respect to such literature. In addition to extensive bibliographic information regarding the resources available in multiple languages, Sparks provides relatively brief descriptions of various resources and categories of resources, which is very helpful as an introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of the Ark
Price gives a concise, yet detailed review of what the Bible has to say on the ark as well as the history of searches for the ark. He covers everything from the myths surrounding the ark, to the wild unsubstantiated claims of people like Ron Wyatt and Graham Hancock. A must for archaeology buffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, readable, scholarly - you wont want the book to end
It is really exciting to see what happens when a well-trained scholar writes historically and Biblically based texts that answer deep burning questions. This is one of those books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and thought-provoking
Randall Price goes beyond the superficial view of the Ark, common in popular culture, as a magical and powerful box.Perhaps a large, ancient battery that literally "shocked" untrained observers?
