4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content but many proofreading errors
This introductory textbook gives a balanced (neither overly conservative nor overly liberal) introduction to all of the classical interpretive questions. Unfortunately, many proofreading errors found in the previousedition have not been corrected in this edition. Some of these errors aresubstantive, such as putting all of the prophetic books under the heading"former prophets" on p.18 and putting Jerusalem instead ofSamaria as the city conquered by the Assyrians in 722 (in the glossaryunder "transcolonization"). However, an alert teacher cancompensate for these types of flaws in an otherwise very competentpresentation of the contents and interpretative issues of Hebrew Bible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Liturgy of the Hours
As one who has recently discovered the beauty of praying the Liturgy of the Hours, I have found Thomas Merton's little treatise on praying the Psalms to be both enriching and encouraging... encouraging me to look to the whole Psalm for the fullness of the meaning intended by each Psalmist (the LofH often uses only part of a psalm for the daily reading.)
5-0 out of 5 stars An answered prayer!
This book answered many questions I had for years about the Psalms and difficulties I had in praying the Psalms. It was a real eye-opener for me! I won't go into detail because I don't want to spoil the beauty of the surprise awaiting the readers of this wonderful little book. It is a short and easy read and opens the beautiful world of the Psalms to those seeking a deeper understanding. I discovered it when my spiritual director loaned me his copy to read, and I am ever grateful for the revelations gained from this little book. So when I found it at amazon.com, I had to purchase a copy to share when the occasion arises...and it has!

3-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly weak for Merton
This slim volume is an introduction to praying the psalms; it is not an introduction to praying the psalms within the Liturgy of the Hours. The intended audience is unclear - it begins with a recommendation to read a book in French ... a task not all of us are up to. In introducing the benefits of praying the psalms, Merton notes "The words and thoughts of the Psalms spring not only from the unsearchable depts of God, but also from the inmost heart of the Church..."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History Comes to Life!
The Bible is the deepest, most intelligent, and powerful writing ever penned. Because it is such a profound book, parts of it may at times seem confusing. Many times I struggled through the pages of the Old Testament trying to comprehend the history. Sometimes I would give up, becoming weary of the long string of names or descriptions of who begat whom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
This important book gives children a Biblically accurate overview of the book of Genesis, told in a narrative style. Read this book to your children before you begin your study of ancient history.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Read..
The book reads like a narrative, starting with Adam and Eve in the Garden, ending with Abram leaving Ur. It was a refreshing way to read the unfolding of Adam, Eve, Abel, Cain, along with Noah and his son's lives. The author spices things up by inserting what she believes these people felt and thought.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book doesn't add up
Roger Beckwith is clearly a man with a vast knowledge of his subject.I cannot pretend to match him or work out where he has gone wrong. However, he has clearly gone wrong somewhere. The purpose of this book is to prove that the contents of the Old Testament were definitively decided by the Maccabees in about 164BC, and he does this to his own satisfaction. However, there is abundant evidence that there were still disputes about some books of the Old Testament 250 years later. That is not to say that the status of most books (whether they were to be included or excluded) was unclear in 164BC; that has been accepted by Bible scholars for decades, and Beckwith did not need to spend hundreds of densely argued pages to prove it again. However, there was still a grey area, for example regarding the Song of Songs, that would take centuries to resolve. As a result, it is difficult to place much trust in anything that Beckwith says that I cannot confirm from my own knowledge. This is a great pity, because there is some valuable information here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misplaced erudition
A major pillar of Protestant theology is that the Bible is sufficient in itself with no need for tradition. This was a reaction to the Roman Catholic doctrine that the teachings of the Church are as important as the Bible.Catholics point out an obvious problem with the Protestant position: the list of books, or canon, is itself a tradition, and indeed for the Old Testament the Protestant and Catholic canons differ.Beckwith seeks to obviate that problem by arguing that the Old Testament canon was firmly fixed before the time of Jesus in a form identical to the current Protestant one, that Jesus endorsed this canon and therefore it has divine sanction. This book is thus polemical.Beckwith marshals a vast amount of evidence, and this gives the book some value, but he is biased and selective.Further, whenever he comes to a difficulty that he cannot overcome, he blithely dismisses it.For example, faced with the substantial additional material in the Catholic versions of Esther and Daniel compared with the Protestant ones, he does not attempt to show that the canon consisted of the Protestant versions of these books.Instead, he calls this a problem of textual criticism rather than canon.Textual criticism deals with odd differences of words, maybe the occasional whole verse added or omitted, but never with the addition of several extra chapters!Beckwith's other fault is that he has long digressions on matters of at best marginal relevance. In summary, you can admire the erudition in this book, but treat everything it says with great caution unless you can check it.

5-0 out of 5 stars OT Canon of NT Church an Excellent Resource
Roger Beckwith has produced a scholarly work which is surely recognized as such in the field of Old Testament study. He has systematically taken the issues, by which the Old Testament Canon must be recognized, and explained them carefully and precisely. The detail in which Beckwith labored is immense. In fact, the only negative thing this reviewer would say is that, to a layman, this work would be very difficult to read without a driving passion to understand the depth of study Beckwith has undergone. Still, the book is not intended to be devotional, but rather, intellectual. Like a dictionary, lexicon, or encyclopedia is not intended to edify, but to clarify, so Beckwith's attention to detail serves as a helpful explanation to a difficult topic. Beckwith divides the book into eight chapters with an introduction and conclusion. Chapter 1 explains the "witnesses" (the early sources of evidence) to the canon. The way that canon was regarded in history past plays an integral role in the establishment of the canon. Tradition seems to be so lightly regarded these days in evangelical camps (to our detriment), and yet what a significant role it played in determining the extent of the canon! As the title to the book suggests, the canon of the Old Testament for the New Testament church takes very heavily into consideration what Jesus and the New Testament writers said about the Old Testament canon. The witnesses that were early enough to offer valid evidence on the canon are listed and explained so that the reader will be familiar with the witnesses as the following chapters implement their contributions. The schools of thought represented by the witnesses, the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes, are also explained. The second chapter established the fact that the canon did indeed already exist by the beginning of the Christian era. Much of this fact is established in that many of the early witnesses declared references to the Old Testament by using a formula before the quotation such as, "It is written", as well simply quoting the book by name. Beckwith's purpose is to show that a nucleus of books existed (hence, a canon), in archive form, and they were housed in the temple. A book would not have been housed in the temple if it were not considered Scripture by the Jews. Chapter 3 is short and simple and describes the various titles of the canon. Each of the 28 titles of the Old Testament canon listed has a endnote attached, making the endnotes to chapter 3 as long as the chapter itself! The point of such evidence is that the individual books had become a collection sufficient enough to warrant various titles to the group (i.e. canon) as whole. The fourth chapter clearly demonstrates that there were three parts to the structure of the canon: The Law, the Prophets and the Hagiographa; this is a method of arranging the various books which is evidenced from many sources outside the canon itself. The earliest evidence is from the prologue to the book "Ecclesiasticus" which specifically mentions three times the three parts of the canon. Jesus Himself, an extremely relevant witness for the Christian, states in Luke 24:44 the three sections of the Old Testament as "the Law of Moses and the Prophets and Psalms . . .". "Psalms" is shown to mean the Hagiographa. Judas Maccabaeus and his associates, in 164 BC, compiled a list of the Prophets and Hagiographa at least 250 years prior to the generally assumed date of the closing of the canon (AD 90, at the Synod of Jamnia). Beckwith defends the date of the recognition of the canon very well in this chapter, and it is one of the best-defended positions he takes in the book. The fifth chapter defines the order of the Old Testament books as grouped in the canon. The purpose for defending that there was an established order-even though that order was different for different people-implies that the books in that order, however arranged, were recognized as canonical and that the canon was closed at the time of its ordering. Chapter 6 proves that the number of the canonical books was always assumed to be 22 or 24. The books would be the same in both numberings; they would simply be grouped differently. The number 22 was favored by the Jews because it matched the number of letters in their Hebrew alphabet. Once again, the necessity to show that there was an agreed on number shows that the identity of such numbered books was known, and these books were, therefore, considered Scripture. Chapter 7 discusses the books in the Old Testament that were considered canonical. There were really only five books included in the canon that were ever disputed with any real fervor. These were: Ezekiel, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Esther. The secular motifs in these books were the leading cause of concern to some scholars as well as the apparent contradictions with other canonical books that were not disputed. The disputes themselves imply that the books in question were considered canonical, because contradictions in un-inspired texts would have been assumed, and therefore, non-existent. The final chapter includes the reasons the non-canonical books were excluded from the canon. The books in question from the Pseudepigrapha and Apocrypha could not be included in the canon, for one reason, because their date is much later than the previously attested date of the closing of the canon recognized by Judas Maccabaeus in 164 BC. The Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes all recognized a closed canon and generally saw that prophecy had ceased. After his conclusion, Beckwith gives several appendixes for further study including charts which summarize visually what would take pages to explain in prose. I would enjoy seeing such a scholarly work such as this made available on layman's level so that what I gained by labor might be attained for the layman at leisure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great Torah
I have been using this version of Torah and commentary for a few years now and just bought this copy for my son. Friedman's commentary is well thought out and very insightful- though not as detailed as I would like. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants an easy to read but deep commentary that doesn't always agree with the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
In a very clear and throughly accurate manner Richard Friedman comments enlighten those who wish to understand the holy book.

4-0 out of 5 stars insightful but not as comprehensive as some
I agree with both the positive and negative reviewers of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can buy only one devotional book this year...
It's hard to believe that Reardon can pack so much depth into such brief and elegant essays on all 150 Psalms. If all you have is ten minutes you can read a Psalm and his essay and you will have both a heart-glow and a mind-challenge for the rest of the day.Filled with appropriate quotes from the church fathers and information about the formation of the liturgical life of the church---how a particular psalm is used in the church's liturgy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of Christ
Patrick Reardon has done me a wonderful service.I serve in a church that loves to sing the Psalms in worship (rather than hymns or other songs). One of my weekly goals is to show God's people that the Psalms are not just old covenant songs, but at their heart are truly centered on our Savior.Reardon's book does this, devoting a couple pages to each Psalm with the express mission of showing Jesus in each.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is the Messiah in your Psalter?
Every so often I come across a book that has the ability to transform a life. This is one such book. Written in a beautiful style, with poise, keen insight and love for Christ, Father Patrick Reardon, has written a book that every Christian ought to read. We live in strange times, where the Old Testament is becoming ever more disconnected form the New; where `men of knowledge' sometimes think it their duty to shut the door on a Christian interpretation of the Old Testament, all in the name of modernity and ecumenicity. Reardon is like a gentle prophet, beckoning the Church to return to its roots, to its truly Catholic, Orthodox and Apostolic character, by rediscovering its own Saviour in the Psalms. Bound to become a classic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of useful information but the apologetics may annoy some
Gleason's book is really a tale of three parts. The first five chapters is really a fairly general introduction to the first half of the bible written in much the same vein as many other introductions to the bible. Personally I like the treatment in the Archer book. It is a little more organized and tightly worded than many others. The most obvious example of this is the tables that are broken out in red type that summarize the contents of the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate scholarship
An Old Testament PhD student recommended Archer as a good, general, upper college level introduction for me.I go to liberal arts school where all the students kiss the ground that Wellhausen walked on.For them to even think of refuting The Documentary Hypothesis is to blaspheme Christ. Therefore, I trembled for joy when I bought Archer.Having been indoctrinated by the critical theories I was overjoyed when I saw someone apply sensible scholarship to a holy love for God.4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best introduction to the Old Testament but
Gleason Leonard Archer's Introduction to the OT is well done and will satisfy the Scholar and the informed lay person showing depth of research but already good readability. This work is definitively evangelical and conservative. I personally prefer it to K. A Harrison's which I find too liberal on some topic to my taste. The organization of the book facilitates research work as well as casual reading. However I did not give 5 starts to this book because for a conservative Archer dismissed too easily the 24-hours day view of Genesis 1(see page 201-203) and surprisingly did not spend much time arguing for his day-age view. It was disappointed to see Archer too eager to conform his exegesis of Genesis 1 to available scientific data in general and geology in particular.Consequently, Archer fails to recognize that creation will never fit the "materialistic view" of science and that his exegesis of Genesis 1 is more influenced by "reader-response" and "science" than it is a result of inductive Bible study. Anyways aside of this "lapse" in judgment Archer's work is a must have and is the best OT Introduction I have seen so far! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnum Opus
Walter Brueggeman has written his Magnum Opus in this book.He sets up the scenario of a law court and God is in this sense on trial. The question of the righteousness of God is dealt with (130ff) and answered by all the witnesses.Brueggemann brings out the polyphonic voices of the text as witnesses to the God of Israel concerning who he is (the nouns), what he will do (the verbs), and how he is to be served and much more.As usual with Brueggemann the exodus and exile are primary motifes, but more than that the kingship of YHWH over Israel and the world (He is depicted as creator). The most interesting point that Brueggemann makes for me concerns the nature of evil.Brueggemann sees evil as chaos or the messing up of God's good creation. It is not that evil is something added to creation, but instead subtracted from it.Brueggemann, throughout, brings up modern day world events in order to make application. This is an area in which the Church needs to listen and take note, because Brueggeman is skilled in this area.
5-0 out of 5 stars Theology of the Old Testament: Testimony, Dispute,Advocacy
Any serious student of theology must not miss the excellency of this book.Brueggemann with his two doctorate degrees is qualified and his writing experience of about 20 other books makes him the man of the hour for Old Testament.
3-0 out of 5 stars A valiant post-modern attempt that falls a bit short
I was a bit disappointed with Walter Brueggemann in this, his magnum opus, I presume.Brueggemann, while he has some great treatment of specific Old Testament texts that many evangelicals would agree with, he falls short in his methodology in this text.It comes across as a re-worked liberal Protestant approach to the Old Testament in post-modern verbage.I am left wondering if Brueggemann thinks the Old Testament is really God's revelatory Word in the most profound sense. It just isn't that clear.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on Proverbs 31
Through this book, Elizaeth George has inspired and challenged me to be a woman that God wants me to be. She gave practical ideas on how to be a Proverbs 31 woman and not to follow what the standard of this world. She gave insight and practical ideas into each verse describing the Proverbs 31 woman. This book is both for single and married women. Nevertheless, I find myself learn more from it after I got married because after all this book is about being a virtuous wife.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by it's rating
After reading all the glowing reviews of this book I was compelled to not only purchase it for myself, but 10 other copies for the women in my book club. It was a unanimous decision that we were all sorely disappointed. The first quarter or so was very promising and held our interest, but about halfway through we began to wonder if this woman ever slept or spent time with her family. Not only were we discouraged and left feeling inadequate, but after 20-something chapters I didn't feel like I really wanted to be a Proverbs 31 woman at all. Since reading this book I've gone on to read Captivating by John and Staci Eldredge -- now that is a book that truly makes you feel beautiful in God's eyes. If that is what you are looking for, as I was when I read Elizabeth George's title, then I recommend you find a different book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Today's Christian Woman
Have you ever looked at yourself and thought that you could never be everything the Proverbs 31 woman is in the Bible? I know I have! But as I read this book, I realized that thepurest virtues of beauty aren't specific, but rather individual. This book shows you what God meant when describing all the attributes of the Proverbs 31 woman. It introduces each characteristic verse by verse with a chapter for each describing Elizabeth's struggles and accomplishments with the virtues as well as what is intended and expected of the Christian woman today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent series for group study!!!
Our small church (20 - 30 who regularly attend church) had 12 participants in adult Sunday School when we did this series. This was the first adult Sunday School curriculem we had used in 10 years, and is still the favorite of all that we've done since. It can be used with new Christians, or those who have done years of Bible study.Even my eight-year-old wanted to watch the videos (available from Focus on the Family) with us(although some videos are not appropriate for children). The videos are excellent. The Leaders' Guide is awesome.Wonderful insights into God's love and our response from little-known parts of the Bible, made relevent by modern-day archeaology.I would recommend this series whole-heartedly to any church or group wanting to study the Bible. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start for Worldview Discussions in the Suburbs
The suburbs and suburban Christianity have been the subject of a great deal of often justified criticism, so Hsu, a suburbanite all his life, undertook the task of looking at how Christians really can live out their faith even in this too materialistic society. His approach is good, his scholarship is well-balanced, and he has some useful suggestions on how better to address the culture rather than just be carried along on its tide.I think he may be a little too gentle on how Christians need to change their lives in response to the challenge Christ laid out for us, but the book is still an excellent way to begin asking the right questions. ...
