    Editorial Review

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. Read more

Miniature edition. Not until you get to the book size at the bottom of the page is there any indication that this IS NOT the complete Boundaries book.Yes, I'm angry--I didn't get what I ordered!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Farce
When I ordered this book I was led to believe it was based on the science of mental health. What I found was that it was a book on Christian values, Bible verses, and virtual preaching. Instead of sound psychological protocol I was given Bible classes. I am not anti-Christian, or anti-religion, but I don't expect to buy a book on psychology only to find it is about two men's religious values. I returned this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
My husband and I read this book and it really cleared up a lot of issues for us! We still refer back to it sometimes!

4-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing, Frustrating
I have been nourished in my faith by Barbara Brown Taylor's writings and presentations over the years. This book is no different.Once I began reading it, I was engrossed in her images and descriptions and connections, as she described her spiritual and professional journey. In many passages, she writes moving descriptions of the grace that happens in congregational life.I highly recommend this as an example of intellectually honest and deeply rooted faith.I have been thinking about it a great deal in the months since I read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cathartic, Even for Me
Barbara Brown Taylor never claims that her approach to the ministry was typical, nor does she advocate that other people follow her footsteps in leaving the church (although she does have some interesting suggestions for empowering churchgoers and the faithful in general). Her story of "finding, losing, and keeping," is merely one personal narrative that successfully avoids the pretense that everyone shares the same dramas and should therefore listen to her wisdom. She is not selling anything. Her book is rather an intimate, articulate self-revelation about her path in the world.
3-0 out of 5 stars Missing a Sense of Call
I have enjoyed Barbara Brown Taylor's essays in The Christian Century and there is no question that she is a talented and descriptive writer. This book is a pleasant (and quick) read largely because her prose flows so beautifully.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy a book on probability instead
This book is mostly built around the idea "I wish it were true = it *is* true".While this book has innate appeal to those looking for meaning in their lives, if you're looking for a firm foundation for understanding coincidences in your life (i.e. intellectual integrity), you'd be better off buying an introduction to probability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything Happens For A Reason
I enjoyed this quick read.I did skip over a few chapters that I didn't feel were pertinent to me, but still really enjoyed this book.If you are looking to see if you are on the right path in life, read God Winks. And then, start paying attention, you'll be surprised at what comes to mind!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable
This was an enjoyable book from the first page to the last.We all have moments of coincidence and this book puts into perspective that these moments do not "just happen"...putting the focus on God. I love the imagery of God "winking" at such a moment as if to say, "Hey there kid, I'm thinking about you right now."Now whenever a coincidence happens in my life, I find myself winking back to say, "Thank You, God...I'm thinking about You right now, too!"Very well written.Hats off to SQuire Rushnell for an exceptionally good book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Love and Respect is a wonderful book! It really helped me understand many things. It deals with situations in which a man or woman is responsible for discord in the relationship. This is one topic I have learned about in the past, and thought I had really implemented in my life, but I was amazed at how much I still did not understand about the way men think and respond. Read this book even if you're not having marital problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Christ loved the church first
If the church is our example of marriage Christ LOVED us first. He did not need to be respected first. I agree with the main idea of the book, however the author puts more pressure on women than on men. Men, lead the way in love as Christ did, even when he received no respect but crucifixion.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a blessing
My husband and I have read this book together and it has made all the difference in the world to our relationship. The love and respect thing that is gone over and over again in the book is right on.At first it feels a little wierd but stick with it, it WILL make the difference that you have been looking for.It has put the great things back into our lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recovery from G_d's point of view
This copy of G_d's Word has so many helps in it for those in a recovery group or attempting recovery on their own.By using the indexes in the back of this Bible, the reader can zero-in on the facets of each of the Twelve Steps and find an appropriate Scriptural principle. Each Step is illustrated by several passages in the Bible, along with commentary by Dr. Stoop. This is not a study Bible, in the customary sense, but a Bible that will cause the recoverer to study what G_d wants to do in her/his recovery. The New Living Translation is easy to read, but I usually read a word-for-word translation along with it (NASB, NKJV, ESV), so as to not miss a thought!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I read this book some years ago. I had been a Christian 6 years at that time, but its contents were earth-shattering. It woke me up to some of the basic truths of the application of Jesus Christ and His word in my life. It opened my eyes to lies I had believed that had literally tormented me for some years. It helped lay a very strong foundation of self-worth and of freedom, and as I now serve God in full time ministry I still draw on the truths that were so powerfully imprinted on my soul through reading the book. Like Billy Graham, I believe every Christian should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Search for Significance
This book identifies some deep insight into your personal self worth.I certainly would recommend it for anyone that is on their journey as a Christ seeker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to Billy Graham...
This book is life changing.Well, it is more of an in-depth Bible study. It is excellent and has given me and my husband the proper foundation for our significance. That foundation is in God and not in what we can do for each other.I believe that it saved our marriage. My husband and I are helping our friends through this study.I am now doing it for the fifth time and my husband is doing it for his third time. That is how much it has affected our lives.Anyone who believes in God but finds that the relationship is not what it should be should read this book and do the workbook that is in the back. ... I ordered this book thinking that it would help put some things in perspective...what I got was a total eye-opener.I have to admit, the man knows what he's talking about.I didn't think it would be as religious as it is, but I'm deeply involved anyhow.
1-0 out of 5 stars Size Matters
This miniature edition is too small to be of much value. When I purchased it, it was not at all obvious that it was a miniature edition, and I was shocked when it arrived. If you're already familiar with the book, it may be a helpful reminder, but it is no way to become familiar with Dr. Peale's work.It is not worth the 4.95 I paid for it, and the 3.99 shipping and handling is ludicrous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful small messages

Very helpful when accompanied by the book "Boundaries".Great for elping with co-dependency and many other problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A workbook that rivals its original text
A wonderful workbook to say the least. If you are not familiar with the series, it really works well for nonsecular purposes as well.Information about boundaries is brought forth in a very sensible and non emotional way.The approach is more thoughtful than most nonsecular texts as the spiritual side of our souls is brought into play.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful workbook...
I purchased both the Boundaries book and the Boundaries workbook.I would highly recommend that people purchase both.Sometimes when you are just reading a book, the information "goes in one ear and out the other" but with the workbook, you are asked to apply what you have learned to your own life - therefore helping you retain it better. This is a definately a great companion to the actual "Boundaries" book and very helpful with the issue of boundary setting. ... This book, along with Way Of The Master has caused an epiphany in my spiritual life. Following the examples of Christ and quotes by great men like Spurgeon, Edwards, Luther and more, these books are the most revolutionary I've read in my life. I finally get what GRACE is all about thanks to the law (10 commandments) opening my eyes to the near hopeless condition man is in. Until the conviction of my soul, I've not known what true grace meant. I suggest to every professing christian to buy The Way Of The Master and Biblical Evangelism and check out the website. 1-0 out of 5 stars Boring!
I lent this book to my MIL before I read it but told her not to tell me about it or her thoughts on it until after I read it. I couldn't get passed the 2nd chapter. I found myself skipping pages that soon. I asked her if she liked it and she said she skipped a lot of pages also and found it to be very repetitive and boring. In my honest opinion it is one of the most boring books I have picked up. It just reads BORING!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The dark side of Amish
Very interesting look into the little know practice of rumspringa, during which the Amish allow their teenagers to experience the dangerous temptations of "the English."We usually believe the Amish are rather naive and simple; in truth, they can be just as wild as non-Amish youths. The clinical analysis tended to be rather dry, but the portraits of the Amish youth were fascinating.

2-0 out of 5 stars not really about rumspringa
I was very surprised that the editor of this book allowed it to be hyped as a book about rumspringa.A very small percentage of the book is about this teenage Amish tradition. The rest is about Amish life in general (farming, faith, etc.), which, while interesting, is not about the moral conflicts teenagers face.

I find this book so inspirational and read something from it every day. Brother Lawrence has tremendous insight into the question of how to get closer to God.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately boring
I'm a very spiritual person and I was expecting this CD to provide daily inspiration and help me to remember the very few things that are important in life.Unfortunately, for me at least, the CD is rather boring and not very inspirational.I'm about 30 minutes in to it and have decided to stop listening to it.Fortunately I have a Christian radio station that does a lot more for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple but Powerful Message
This little book packs a wallop. It contains a simple but powerful message: to live in contact with God, one need only hold Him in mind, or carry on a mental conversation with Him. The reason why Brother Lawrence's book is so transforming is that one can feel that he practiced what he preached. As he describes the process of practicing the presence, the reader is drawn into the gossamer web of the author's own experience. To begin this practice, all we have to do is read this book. We are given a boost at the beginning; the rest is up to us. Take this book on retreat, or pick it up whenever you are feeling spiritually dry. It will open your heart and nurture your soul. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
I greatly appreciate Norman Wright. I have been using his materials in pre-marital counselling for many years. He is very practical, very easy to follow, and very biblical in his approach.
4-0 out of 5 stars thought provoking questions overall...but...
For the most part, this book is very helpful in having each person really think about what they are getting into and situations that may arise that will affect their relationship.Especially good is chapter 4 and 7, which deals with how each of you would deal with certain situations (such as inability to have kids, financial crises) as well as expectations each of you have for your relationship/marriage.My only criticism is that it is a bit sexist, focusing on the man being the head of the household and the leader...while there are passages in the bible that stress this, this seems to be emphasized in the author's writing and this seems to be a bit antiquated thinking.I think many people believe more in an equal partnership these days vs. having the hubby being the "leader" and the wife "servves" him.But other than this point, a very thought provoking book - spawns good conversations between the two of you...conversations that should be had before committing to a marriage!

2-0 out of 5 stars Concept vs. Applicability
This was a nice story about a guy making a journey from success to significance in the second half of his life.Unfortunately, most of us don't have the financial resources to do things the way he did them.Conceptually, what he is saying is appropriate. However, most of us don't have the millions that allow for extended time off to reflect, seek the help of consultants, conduct low cost probes, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb for middle-age
Superb book for who is approaching, is at, or has just gone over the middle age (30-60). Challenges the reader to stop, evaluate life, distiguish the pattern of search for succcess of the first half, and plan for the second half. The second half is where the game is won or lost; therefore, the reader is challenged to plan his/her life for significance.

Wonderful book that combines humor and
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book covers everything you might expect: Lutheran theology, comparison of major branches of Christianity, pointers to some interesting parts of the Bible, how to handle disruptive people in church, how to behave at various church-related events, what to bring to a covered-dish dinner (do Californian Lutherans really feature Tofu in their covered dishes?), and more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Whate Everyone should know about Lutherans
As a born and bred Lutheran living in the Southeast (where you drive by 15 "other" denominational churches before finding the closest Lutheran church) I find this book to be a necessity for people who ask the question, "Just what is a Lutheran anyway?"

5-0 out of 5 stars We keep going back to this book
At different points in our relationship we pull this book off the shelf and read it together out loud. When we first started reading the book we were just dating and it was an example of a relationship we wanted to have. Throughout our marriage it has been an inspiration and a challenge to us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Haunting, Exquisite
This extraordinary memoir by Sheldon Vanauken about his relationship with Jean Davis is subtly addictive and exquisitely crafted. The story of their conversion from a self-described "paganism" to Anglican Christianity (due in no small part to the friendship and mentorship of C. S. Lewis) is gripping and heartbreaking.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken
This book is outstanding! The authors' writing style is engaging and the story is poignant.Mr Vanauken takes us through a relationships' stages with grace and we follow his miraculous journey into the faith and into love and grief-so intricately intertwined! I would recommend this to anyone who is married or thinking of marriage or in a relationship that is thinking of marriage. But also, it is a statement on the path to faith in God for everyone-a good read for intellectuals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference on Prophecy
This is a very powerful book on the gift of prophecy.Goll's writing has been cross-referenced with scripture throughout the book which gives creditabilty to this study. This book particularly helps those who have received the gift of prophecy giving a deeper understanding about the power of God and the purpose of visions in ministry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing vsInterpreting
As God has led me on an sight filled path since 2001 the difficult part has often been discerning, "What does this mean?" and "What do you want me to do?".Thankfully Christ has often carried me and kept my path in tune with His intentions despite my glaring imperfections. This and the spiritual fruit that ensues is what a relationship with God through Christ is all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scripture supports this book's content...
Bold statement? Perhaps--- since truth speaks for itself. In contradistinction to one review, I've seen nowhere in the bible where Cain is accused of sexual sin or of substance abuse. Any exegesis or etymological study does not support this supposition. It was the heart-attitude of Cain which was the "sin crouching at (his) door".
