5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Introduction
This book, recommended by a friend, was my initiation into the world of shamanism. I think Harner gives a great overall description of what shamanism is and where it comes from. There's no mystical, magical ramblings. It's very straighforward and based upon the research Michael Harner did personally as an anthropologist. He's taken the mystery out of shamanism, and presents it more as a science, or methodology.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Journey Awaits~"Hail The Goer!"
'The Way of the Shaman' by anthropologist and practicing shaman Michael Harner does an admirable job in presenting core shammanic beliefs, vivid personal experiences with indigenous practicing cultures and how-to-techniques and training for individual and group shammanic journeying.
1-0 out of 5 stars Read it if you must-but take it from where it comes.
I have been teaching Shamanic workshops, and practicing Shamanic healing for many years ( never charging a penny for my services).

3-0 out of 5 stars The index is very useful
I was disappointed in the superficiality of the descriptions for the herbs and their uses, but the index is very useful. Folk names, common names, and Latin names are all easily found -making it much simpler to track down the plants you want at your local greenhouse.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs (Llewellyn's Sourcebook Series)
This is a great general book. A word to the wise. Some of the herbs that he recommends are posionous and should be not ingested. These herbs are in no way flagged in the book at all. Lily of the Valley, Mandrake, Belladonna are all dangerous and not for use without extensive research. Remember even if you see lots of food on the forest ground not all of it is safe to eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical info for the practicing witch
what I like about this book is not the info on obcure plants that I have to send away for, but the info on things and herbs you can find in the grosery store. like some fruits and spices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very complete... but very complex
A excellent and serious book about self initiation in the Golden Dawn magic system. But it's very complex too. This big book will teach you a lot of details about magical things and cosmogony, through a one or two year's "evening class".
2-0 out of 5 stars Changes and Errors
There are some gross errors in this book (especially in the artwork) that make me wonder as to the real accomplishments and attainments of the authors. The errors are such that I don't believe them to be intentional blinds. The Cicero's have removed nearly all traces of the Judeao-Christian Masonic themes from the Golden Dawn and have emphasized the Egyptian and Neo-Pagan.In doing so, key mystical truths have been omitted.
5-0 out of 5 stars Self Initiation into the Golden Dawn...
This is a keystone piece of modern literature for the Western Esoteric Tradition. Not for the faint of heart, this tome encloses prodigious knowledge from around the world and throughout the ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars golden dawn
Very good book - can be called a bible for humans, who are looking for self-awakening. Many interesting rituals and informations about modern magic and The Golden Dawn louge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isreal lives
What can I say..awsome book by one of the Great Magi of our times!Gives you the complete system from top to bottom as far as the Golden Dawn goes.Beginers could use this book...but Id suggest Donald Michael Criegs "Modern magick" first if your realy new to the system! But just to help give you some foundation before you dive into this complete Tome.Suppliment it with some od Isreal's teachings on CD and youll go far.......fast!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference, not for beginners
Step by step instruction is lacking and certain fundamental ideas are assumed to be known and understood by the reader...a complete beginner would be lost with this book alone. It is an invaluable reference for someone who has a certain level of practical experience, but a book like Don Kraig's Modern Magick would be preferable to start with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is very useful.Scott Cunningham's books are wonderful. He knew his stuff, and was very thorough when compiling the information. This book tells how to make incense, different oils for ritual, herbal charms, sachets, powders, soaps, and lots of other stuff. It's a great book for the kitchen witch because it's a wonderful reference book. And as with all of his books, he adds charts for substitutions, sabbats, days, seasons, and just correspondences for each oil and herb.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother Earth's Majik
I am discovering the enjoyment and knowledge from this book.I think the forklore is interesting, but since I have just begun I feel this book will be a winter project to create some of the oils and such the I would would like to make.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and Very Informative
I found this book very informative for those wishing to make their own brews and potions. I enjoyed reading it and have put some of the formulas into action. I use the oils and soaps when I'm feeling the need to recharge. Also great information on herbs and such. If you're into making your own things and using them or giving them as gifts then this book is for you. You won't go wrong buying this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Yikes!
Oh my goodness! I bought this book for a little 7 year old girl. She loves "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Corpse Bride" - and she loves scary stories and such - so I thought this would be perfect. I gave one to my 11 year old too. Well - that was last Christmas - and just last night (it's now June) my 11 year old decided to read the book. This book is NOT appropriate for a 7 year old or even and 11 year old. There are blatant references to sex. How emabarressing! I have to apologize to the little girl's Mom. They probably read the book six months ago and thought I was a sick-o. So - just a warning - in case you think this is a great gift for a kid - it's not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tim Burton's Oyster Boy Book and Voodoo Girl Figure Boxed Set (Tim Burton's Tragic Toys for Girls and Boys)

5-0 out of 5 stars To "See" =Alone In The World With Nothing But Folly.
This book is the sequel to the first book "The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge" and is just as meaningful and profound. The idea of spirituality under the Yaqui Indian paradigm, like other esoteric perceptions, conveys a non-ordinary reality where rationalizations and human explanations act as superficiality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Castaneda brings us this guide to a life free of worry
I admire Carlos Castaneda for his courage, perseverance and devotion to attain deep spiritual wisdom and knowledge. He deserves a generous "thank you" for traveling deep into the Mexican wilderness to bring us a documented account of the secret spiritual tradition of the Yaqui Indian that produces men of intense spirit, profound character and impressive psychological powers.Castaneda, who throughout the book seems to be very earthly and rational, makes a tremendous effort to explore a realm of existence that goes well beyond his comfort zone.I have not read its precursor The Teachings of Don Juan... but I was still able to understand and enjoy this sequel.

I use it daily. When connected with Centering prayer, Christian Meditation (John Main's), or some other prayer practice, it can complete your daily prayer. If one were to actually follow the outline in the book, and spend the time to "be still and aware of God's presence within and all around", what else would you need? ;^) ... Anyone into Isis spirituality will thoroughly enjoy this book..it's packed with magical info and ritual work that can be used for solitary or group practice...it has become my handbook and reference book for all my workings!

5-0 out of 5 stars Isis Lives
And this book can help you meet her (or just learn A LOT about her)! As Isis knew both joy and sorrow, she is a goddess that knows love and compassion, and has historically been known as one of the very few deities able to change fate. This book is filled with detailed accounts of her myths, her history, and her followers from all around the world. It also has many Isis-based rituals and meditation that can help you develop a deep relationship with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shaman Tuneup
An excellent book uniting two strands of thought--kundalini and shamanism journeys. This is a book for those of you who have experience with shamanic teachings . . . not a book for those who are beginners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Concerned
I approached Alberto Villoldo's [AV] tome with an open mind since a member of my family is now engaged in AV's shaman training. With each page I became more concerned for her welfare and stability.By the time I finished Shaman, Healer, Sage, Iwas downcast; AV seemed as grounded in reality as a J.K. Rowling fantasy - perhaps even less so.I know all too well that I can't intervene; she'll have to learn on her own how to distinguish fact from fiction, the healer from the promoter.

3-0 out of 5 stars A peice of the whole
This book offers you one important aspect of shamanism, dealing with the luminous body. However, shamanism also includes many other approaches to sensing, feeling and seeing, and many lack the ability to do so.If you check out www.holisticawareness.org, they offer distance initiations to awaken the shaman within, then you can better integrate the concepts within this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Celtic Spirituality
Newell adds to his growing collection of insightful works on all things Celtic. From the lives of the Celtic saints to the practices of those who follow the Celtic Way he inspires and informs.Very helpful stuff!

2-0 out of 5 stars More of an attack on Reformed Theology than anything else.
Without wasting many words, this book is basically an attack on Reformation Theology. It's presuppositions and themes are decidedly anti-Calvinistic. I was expecting to Listen for the Heartbeat of God, but what I heard is that Pelagius (the misunderstood heretic) was right and Augustine was wrong. The book is clearly too simplistic and does not do any justice to the Augustine and Pelagian controversy. Either Newell is actually characterizing Celtic Spirituality for what it is, or worse, he his imposing his own Pelagian paradigm under the guise of "Celtic" spirituality. Thus, either he's right and I don't like it, or he's just got an agenda--and I still don't like it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting But Disappointing
Some of what J. Philip Newell writes I found interesting, like his chapter on Pelagius (a Celtic Christian and theologian). While I admit that I do not agree with everything that Pelagius believed I also believe that he was misrepresented and maligned by the Roman church leaders of his day. His being labelled a heretic sounds more like a political issue than a theological one. If more listening occurred there might have been more understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!!!To Coin A Phrase, Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover!!!
I have the original version of this book, the one with the picture of the Broomstick Babe on the cover.I wasn't willing to pay full price for this book because of the picture, so bought it at my local Half-Price Books for a few dollars.Because of the picture, as well as Ms. RavenWolf's reputation, I really didn't expect much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Okay...So are we Wiccan or Catholic?
Wow! I just read a few reviews on here for this book and lets just say that I am ashamed to call myself apart of the Wiccan Religion right now! I have never been so humiliated before! People think this book is bad...its not real witchcraft...shes "fluffy"...Gardnarian Tradion is the ONLY way...you SHOULD read THESE authors and no others...is this sounding familiar? Unfortunatly, YES! People get so wound up in these so called "Witch Wars" that Wicca, once a religion that promoted "PERSONAL FREEDOM" to suit YOUR practice to YOUR needs is being transformed into a dogmatic "ONE WAY RELIGION". I was raised Catholic, hated the dogma and constant fear, To Ride a Silver Broomstick was my first book on The Craft given to me by my Wiccan girlfriend in High School. Silver showed me the way!
5-0 out of 5 stars I definately reccomend this book!
Silver delves into so many things I love. I guess my only regret is the lack of pre-outlined ritauls. I read this after TeenWitch and I think that that's her "fluffiest" book. This is so good and it rounded it out very nicely. I use both books when doing rituals, spells, and meditations, and even did the TeenSeeker ritual outlined in TeenWitch. Buy this book, and you will forever understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just holding or seeing the book invites one in
Everything this man does emanates love, beauty, and truth. The photography, the explanations, the involvement of many people together resolving serious planetary problems with "simple" solutions - all based on love - getting results. Mr. Emoto's work doesn't just give me hope, it gives me absolute confidence that our planetary problems - both local and international - including greed and war - can and will be resolved. How long that will take will depend on how many people are working toward the resolution. I think it is a movement of growing momentum - especially for people who are willing to take personal responsibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars BestBook forChristian Slaves rediscovering the Natural Earth
I really enjoyed this book.It was bound to be published, sooner or later. If the Library of Alexandria did not burn and collapse, society would have seen this kind of book much sooner. Many rebels and magicians would have withered in the piazza's stockades, for circulating such an explosive tome about Nature.Let it be published!Through christianity and islam and communism, these power structures have done nothing to promote world peace and caring for the environment. Those institutions destroy the haptic pagan ,who then becomes numb to the ways of Nature and her Earth-Magick.Scott Cunningham has became a lightening rod for ridicule by the pudibund neo-right.The average Wiccan today ,was still wearing nappies, when Scott passed away.He would be amazed and delighted by the growth of the Old Religion today. Some potentially good Wiccans of the 60's were stymied by drifting into the Red Army Faction,Malcolm X's panthers and the Kirshna-Moonies.This is a great beginners book for all open-minded people ,who want to channel their energies in a more positive way. When one destroys an aspect of Nature, one destroys part of the whole cosmic-web,in which we all live on. Wicca is not about devil-worshipping,or a gateway path into Satantism.Nor an idle trip into Lotusland. The amusing Hollywood b-flicks ,hash-out alot of the wrong sterotypes about true Wicca.Latest being the ridiculously inaccurate ,"Wicker-Man" movie.Use this book as a primer, and then research for more advanced Wiccan studies.-As Jim Morrison once said,"You're all a bunch of slaves!".So,Wiccans of the Earth Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains of ignorance!

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of My Favourite Books EVER
This book was instrumental in changing my view of the world and opening up to all the magic that is here now. A truly timeless book, this is the first Carlos Castaneda book I recommend to everyone. Is Don Juan a real person or just a character in the mind of a brilliant Carlos?Everybody wants to know.. (those that have read a few books) If you do some searches on the internet you may be able to find a Don Juan that goes by a different name... Some say that he is the inspiration for these books. Regardless, this reality is quite magical and I have experienced its truth. Thankyou to the Magic of the Universe!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Here
I read this book after being directed to it by a colleague at work. It started out interesting about Carlos the under graduate student spending time with the Indian Mistic Don Juan. It seemed that Don Juan was trying to get Carlos to pierce the illusion of reality, but the story broke down quickly and just got strange and made little sense from a logical or mystical stand point. By the end of the book I started believing Carlos was being drugged and I did not trust this Don Juan. I would advise reading Vernon Howard or studying Buddhism for enlightenment and avoid this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Castaneda's Best
This, in my opinion (and I have read them all) is Castaneda's best work. There is alot of speculation as to which books are indeed fiction and which are based on fact.Perhaps all of them are fables from Castaneda's inventive mind.Still, there is a common belief among his fans that, beginning after this book his works become pure fiction.Regardless of the 'factual' nature of these works, Truth is found within Castaneda's writings - especially in Journey to Ixtlan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for beginners
I loved this book. It is wonderful for beginners as well as others. It's written for the younger witchs out there, but I thinkthat is why I liked it so much. It was easy to read and even gave you assignments like homework. It is one of the only beginner books I have read that wasn't a drag. The only problem I had with it was some of the color & word meanings; they were not the same as any of my other books, so watch out for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners
I think this book is excellent for anyone new to the magickal path as it deals with some basic notions. It is then easier for an apprentice to choose the books necessary for further studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but misguided.
Other than it being directed at the yonger audience, my only other problem with this book is that the author blatantly badmouths Satanists, I guess religious tolerance doesn't count with that path, and needs to freshen up his knowledge on herbs. The last time I checked, garlice was not poisonous.I would not recommend this book to any beginner on the Pagan path without supervision from a more experienced and knowledgeable Pagan.Overall, there issome decent information, however, it's got some hiccups along the way. ...
