2-0 out of 5 stars Mitford Series
My wife tried for several years to get me to read this series. "Sissy Books", I'd cry. I bless the day when I finally succumbed to her charms and read the books by Jan Karon.I have read them once, retired, and started re-reading them again.I laughed, I shed a few tears (that's hard for a retired police officer to say)and I had some very important lessons in life re-emphasized. I saw in Father Tim a man after God's own heart, and it makes me want to be that kind of man. I highly recommend In This Mountain as well as the entire series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Author!
Jan Karon's Mitford Series is a welcome reprive from today's busy world! Reading her book is like snuggling up with your favorite blanket and a cup of hot chocolate on a snowy night! Once you begin her books... you don't want to put it down. She has a way of writing so that you feel as if you are really there in "Mitford".If you are thinking of purchasing it... you can't go wrong! Go for it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Total Fiction! Author admits story is a novel!
I have an old original copy her book from 1991 - in that book, the author fully states that everythig is true and based on her own personal experieces. Now, I am reading a much different story on Amazon and elsewhere about her book. Frankly - I had my doubts about what happened to her but I am always willing to give any author my attention and digest their message.
4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring if you dare
I really liked the book and the found the simple truths to reinforce my own personal beliefs.I am amazed at some of the negative reaction to such a positive message. How on earth could this book be seen as threatening but then again human's are like a rope......G-d pulling on one end and the devil on the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fearful People writing above . . .
Very funny to this one new age, tree-hugging, sensitive, spiritual kinda guy that so many people would be strongly moved to anger by reading MM's book(s).Strong work invokes strong passions and deeply hidden fears.

4-0 out of 5 stars a beautiful sequal to Dinner with a perfect Stranger
Even though this book stands on it's own.....I would think one would choose to read Dinner with a Perfect Stranger first. Both very good, and wonderful tools for sharing with friends and family about the beautiful character, grace, sensitivity and love of our savior the Lord Jesus Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Day with a Perfect Stranger
I read Dinner with a Perfect Stranger.Sound theology on that one and I saw no difference in this one.I liked this book very much.Easy read. Also liked the movie of Dinner, however was disappointed that they changed the lead character from male to female and made Jesus look very American, when in actuality he would have looked more Palestian.
5-0 out of 5 stars Continued Perfection in this second encounter...
Just as in the first book (Dinner with a Perfect Stranger), "A Day With a Perfect Stranger" is a very easy and quick read.

Editorial Review

Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just REALLY BAD writing!
Ok, I don't mean to be rude, but if you think this is great writing you are woefully uneducated. It is almost a sad confirmation of the common stereotype of fundamentalist Christians being uneducated yokels that so many of them think this is great writing. Here's my take: I'd enjoy a good "end of times" story - this just isn't it. The Left Behind series is amateurish and poorly written and just plain astonishing to me that it has had such huge success. P.T. Barnum once said that no one ever went broke understimating the intelligence of the American public and this series proves it. Christians should demand better writing from their revered authors. Go read some C.S. Lewis or something - please.
2-0 out of 5 stars Christian fundamentalism dramatized
Even the avid "trekie" reader of the Star Trek science fiction novels, movies and television series must suspend disbelief, when he finds Captain Kirk saying "Beam me up, Scotty."But the biblical literalist reading this book need make no such effort, when he reads in this book that Jesus will effectively beam millions of true Christians up to heaven in the world-wide "Rapture."Though the characters and their roles are fictitious, the book specifically references the relevant biblical passages for the believer.
5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest out of all books...
Left Behind book one is by-far the best book out of the first five adult books that I have read. This book is science-fiction and is a fast reader. The Left Behind collection is about the Earths last days when Jesus comes from heaven and chooses the chosens one. If you believe in the bible and know Jesus is real you will not be Left Behind. It starts out with Rayford steele in countrol of a 747 passanger Jet flying over the Alantic. As he is doing that he is thinking about the Senior Flight attendent, Hattie Durham. She is young and atractive. But he is loyle to his wife, Irene, so he wont ruin there relationship. Rayford has two kids. Ray JR. age 12 and Chloe, coming home from college. When Rayford isnt working he never really goes to church. Only ray Jr. and Irene every sunday and Chloe is always at college. But to know the rest you must read the book. Left Behind is Kinda hard to understand and has some hard words in it. (Recommened age group 8th grade-13 years of age.) Craig- Monticello,Illinois ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Critics after life after death...?
I have no way of understanding how someone could not love such a life's work as this one. An artist might have to die to get famous, but what about those who die and come back?
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
I read this book initially several years ago just before my mother passed away.I found it very comforting.I give it to people who are dealing with a death in the family or an illness of their own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for Mormons
No doubt most Christians will be entertained by this read.Eadie asserts that all people may not come to know Christ as the savior in this life but that they "must" accept his love in the next. The implications of a continued denial are not addressed (along with many other things she supposedly gained insight toward).I don't necessarily disagree with or discount Ms. Eadie's account, I simply find it to be overtly biased. Her explanation of our ability to reconnect with past lives with the usage of hypnosis is in a word, weak. She explains it as "cell memory."This I've never debated but, she goes on to assert that reincarnation does not exist, which left me wondering just what are we remembering then. She contradicts herself greatly here.

This book is powerful.I could not put it down.I have read many Karen Kingsbury books, but there is something different and extraordinary about Divine.I prefer to read reviews, not leave them. But this book moved me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ted Dekker & his Black, Red & White books were awesome!
I loved this series. The first book I read by Ted Dekker was THREE. That book kept me on the edge of my seat. So when I saw Black, Red & White, I couldn't wait to read them. Intense reading that will NOT lose your interest. The Christian parallel is phenomenol. Ted obviously has experienced a walk with God and His spirit. I loved the allegories, I loved the sci-fi element, and the story line is so intriguing. You won't be sorry you decided to read this series of books!
5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and Fast Paced: Red delivers
When I first sat down to read the second book in the trilogy, I had high expectations because of the foundation that was covered in Black. This book exceeded my hopes and pushed beyond the realm of what I thought was possible in the world of Thomas Hunter. With the passing of each page, the intensity grows and raises mind-bending questions. Then the book delivers on its setup and rewards the reader with a story so fulfilling that it's hard to find words to describe.Red transitions beautifully into White, the last installment of the Circle Trilogy where the remaining questions are answered.Fast-paced, riveting, and wonderfully written, this book is a must read for all lovers of fiction. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not what is depicted with the cover view
In searching for this title I found there were 60+ versions out there so I had to rely on both editor and cover pictorials to determine the one I was seeking (which was modern English, full page pictorials, and covering both Christian's and Christiana's journeys).Since I had the one I wanted in hand, I put a lot of faith in the cover visual. What I got was as version without full page pictures, small print and in the older dialect. From what other pilgrims have told me, the modern English version is essential in understanding this work. I donated it to the local library in hopes it will still do good.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are born brainwashed
Anyone who is a serious follower of Jesus Christ and understands what he is saved from (the wrath of God) will find this book to be an immense treasure house of comfort and fatherly instruction. Those who think that this book is a tool for brain washing have it all backwards. The brainwashing occurs when we are conceived into this world in our sin and rebellion against our Holy Creator, by our very nature. Born into a vacuum, we'd all rebel. The gospel is the news that Jesus Christ endured God's wrath in our place and is ever making us more like himself. We are no longer in the bondage that we were born into. Praise be to God!This book is a wonderfully wise parable of a Christian's experience in this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have !

3-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating sequel about post-modern church
The Story We Find Ourselves In: Further Adventures of a New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren is the sequel to A New Kind of Christian.I enjoyed the first book very much.It opened my eyes to the idea of a post-modern church and how to look at the world in a much bigger way.In this book, the conversation between Neo and Dan continues as Neo's friend Kerry dies from cancer.Neo explains the "story" of the Bible to Kerry in a new way, helping her find peace before the end. While McLaren makes some good points during the book, I couldn't help but be annoyed at how everyone who listened to Neo viewed his opinions as almost sacred or divine.Everyone who listens to him is shocked and awed at his wisdom. He props up evolution, gives an unusual view of Heaven, and refuses to discuss the concept of Hell.Neo talks some ideas to death, but others he dances around without giving answers that would commit him to an opinion and possibly chase his listeners away.I'm just not sure how I feel after reading this book.I don't feel that the inclusion of Kerry was necessary, and the story of her wasting away seemed a bit forced. The book did not change my mind or open it the way the first one did.I guess I'm a little disappointed that Neo dismisses anyone who doesn't believe in evolution or the way he does. His tolerance seems limited to those who think the way he does, and those who don't, aren't as intelligent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, book
Having read and enjoyed A New Kind of Christian, I decided to turn to the second book in the series which I received as a Christmas gift (along with the third book which I have recently started reading). So, I took some time to read The Story We Find Ourselves In.
3-0 out of 5 stars McLaren out of material
I truly loved the first book in this trilogy by McLaren, A New Kind of Christian, the characters were new, fresh, exploring a relationship and a kind of faith. However in this follow-up book these interesting developing characters that I had come to love in the first book and done all their character developing and left the second book fairly flat, there was no more growing with Pastor Dan or with Neo, they had already been stretched to the limit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sappyness at it's worst
When picking this book up one day in a store, I had high hopes for it. I have always thought Amish had a fascinating way of life and I figured this book may give me more insight about it. The plot sounded like something I would like.
5-0 out of 5 stars I long for retribution.
I had already heard of the Quilter's Daughter and the Bishop's Daughter when I picked up this book so I knew what WOULD NOT happen at the end.Still, I wasn't disappointed. The Amish seem to be prone to having large families.I could definitely sympathize with Naomi.I could actually feel the strain she goes through, minding the children and helping at her father's store.I initially disliked her father. He drives her too hard in the begining, looking on her as a slave and being stingy (Why should I hire someone to help when I got Naomi?) and trying to curb her social life. The change he undergoes after the kidnapping and Naomi's departure is a primary example of the "Satan schemes; God redeems" principle, God using an evil thing like kidnapping to bring about something good in someone's life.I believe that was Brunstetter's goal in writing this, and she has succeeded.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good But
The characters are wonderful but the story drags along. Also, there seems to be a theme of sickness and death.I did read all three books in one setting and found myself wanting to read the last page.It just does not keep you interested. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time
This book came highly recommended from a friend, described as a "page turner a la the Da Vinci Code " by Dan Brown. I have a keen interest in the grail legend and related novels, so I eagerly anticipated reading this book.Trust me: this ain't no "Da Vinci Code" -- and you won't be seeing any movie made from this hopelessly confused story. It was all I could do to finish it. Very poor writing.I felt like I was inside a cheap harlequin romance novel. Gag.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!
This story held my attention!! You have to be an open-minded person though, because if you are not (don't believe in reincarnation) than you will not like this book. I love the fact that the present day characters were the past characters reincarnated. You suspect you know things, but you never do until the last moment. Again, I say this is a GREAT book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Other "Grail" stories are better
I was disappointed in this book.It was bogged down in too much detail concerning the battles that took place and was otherwise disjointed and confusing.Your time would be better spent reading "The Eight" by Katherine Neville. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you think!
The entire time I read this book all I could think about was "What if this happened to me?" Very good reading! Can't wait to read the sequel.
5-0 out of 5 stars Last Light
I watch for new every title Terri publishes. Each book of her many series stands alone, yet keeps you hungry for the next in a series. As soon as I finished Last Light I immediately ordered Night Light (Book#2.) Others have written about the Last Light story line, basically I concur. But I had a couple of issues with the reality side of such an event. The biggest disconnect with me was the failure of all engines with a computer chip, from cars to home generators. That's certainly true in theory. But I can't believe that even in a smaller community a few bright mechanics or engineers could not tinker with these things and figure out a way to by pass the fried electornics. In Book 2 someone finally gets a brain and realizes that older cars (classics) still run. In the Branning's upscale neighborhood, don't tell me that someone didn't have an old Porche or restored '57 Chevy in their garage.Granted, it would take a lot of tinkering to get a modern SUV running when the chip(s) goes bad, but a couple of shade tree mechanics with a lot of time on their hands and a big incentive to succeed could certainly gerry-rig a bunch of direct wires and fire that sucker up.It might run rough, but it would run.Same for the home generator. For the sake of the story itself, which was about the people dealing with the crisis, it was probably better for the author to ignore these ideas.Still, it hurt my reading enjoyment as I placed myself in the character's shoes. Oh yeah, I went and stocked up on batteries and other "Hurricane items" after reading the book.... just in case!Lou Sauer, Raleigh, NC

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Greatest Books On Esoteric Knowledge Ever Written
I have to honestly say that Hall outdone himself on this one. It is one of the greatest books on esoteric knowledge ever. He speaks openly about the mystery schools, divination, book of Revelation and other spiritual topics. A must have for anyone interested in the esoteric traditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Work
Brother Manly P Hall has written a brilliant book that covers so much. His knowledge of esoteric philosophy and religion is endless. He was a brilliant man who has contributed so much through his many works. This book is very well written and is vey beautiful. It is a very insightful piece of work that will enlighten all who read it's text. I would encourage all to read this book, it is one of the most important and influential books that I have ever had the honor of reading. I would recommend reading some of Hall's other works and those of Sir Francis Bacon among others.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE encyclopedia of esoteric teachings
The book is amazing in its amount of topics covered, from Gnostic beliefs, the lost city of Atlantis, who really wrote Shakespeare, who were the Rosecrucians, secret meanings of the Zodiac, alchemy, Pythagorean math, mystery schools and much, much, much, more at 56 chapters. For an introduction to every esoteric religion in history, buy this book.I read it from cover to cover and it was enthralling for all 672 pages. Also get "lectures on ancient philosophy" to go into more depth. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Slow moving story
I bought this book because I'm a quilter but was disappointed with the story.Since I hadn't read the first book I found myself repeatedly turning back to figure out how the characters (as many as eight names in a few paragraphs) were related to oneanother. I was tempted to put the book down because the story seemed to go nowhere. With nothing else at home to read, I continued and finished the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ
This was a great read.I read it through in one evening and I could not put it down.I thought it followed the other books well and I look forward to reading more.I absolutely recommend this book.If you are looking for a great series I suggest this one.

Editorial Review

In 2019, humanity finally finds proof of extraterrestrial life when a listening post in Puerto Rico picks up exquisite singing from a planet which will come to be known as Rakhat. While United Nations diplomats endlessly debate a possible first contact mission, the Society of Jesus quietly organizes an eight-person scientific expedition of its own. What the Jesuits find is a world so beyond comprehension that it will lead them to question the meaning of being "human." When the lone survivor of the expedition, Emilio Sandoz, returns to Earth in 2059, he will try to explain what went wrong... Words like "provocative" and "compelling" will come to mind as you read this shocking novel about first contact with a race that creates music akin to both poetry and prayer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best ...
sci-fi books I've ever read. A hauntingly believable account of the first human voyage to an inhabited alien planet - with a little religious commentary thrown in. I've been a huge sci-fi fan for years, but this book destroyed any expectations I had regarding the way science fiction is written and read.
5-0 out of 5 stars True spirit of SiFi

Editorial Review

As if being a priest in this day and age isn't difficult enough, try shepherding two parishes, located hundreds of miles apart, at the same time. A predicament of biblical proportions indeed, but one the indomitable Father Tim Kavanaugh and his cheerful wife, Cynthia, can handle, with a little help from the Lord--not to mention their friends--in Jan Karon's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful... as are all of Jan Karon's books!
Mitford is the kind of place that we would all love to live.... a slpeey little town in the mountains where you know your neighbors. I recommend buying this book... and curling up in your favorite chair with a warm blanket and cup of hot chocolate! Turn the phones off and slip away... I guarentee that you won't want to come back!

5-0 out of 5 stars Then Sings My Soul
"A New Song" is capable of lifting one's soul from under winter's repression;whether it is weather or lost soul related. This book, like Jan's others, provides a cool, pristine drink from a novel bubbling with joy, life, and laughter. It satisfies the thirst for a good read that is NOT filled with sex, violence, and vulgarity!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Them Coming
I lose myself in Jan Karon's books. The series on the little town of Mitford and Father Tim I hope will never end. We need these type books today. God, integrity, goodness, honor and love is so sorely lacking in our world today that I feel hopeful when I am able to find something so rewarding to read. I pray that Jan Karon will continue to develop new characters while keeping the old to remind us that with faith all things are possible. A New Song is well worth the read!! May Jan keep them coming. ... Read more
