5-0 out of 5 stars Paradox is the way non-duality looks at the mental level
I will always be grateful to Barbara Miller for her translation of the Bhagavad Gita for one overarching reason: her translation of Chapter 15, "The True Spirit of Man" pointed out the non-duality at the heart of the Gita, something that I had missed in other translations. Here's an excerpt:
4-0 out of 5 stars Krishna or Anti-Krishna?
The Bhagavad-Gita "Krishna's Counsel in Time of War", is a depressing religious text of Hinduism of unknown authorship(s) written around 2,000 years ago.It is a single chapter from one of many chapters contained in the Mahabharata, which is a very long epic poem of over 100,000 verses.Although the Gita is not the most authoritative or religious piece of Hindu writing, it is very popular among most Hindus.Indeed, it is probably the most popular Hindu writing among non-Hindus as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Translation
I have read many different translations of the Gita over the years but I have found this one to be the best by far. This is the only edition that I have come across which translates & gives the Gita as is without trying to explain the verses or any other religious propaganda. Some of you may not like it for it's utter simplicity and bareness but I love it & have had it since 2002.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegance in Action
There's lots of noise in the yoga world today. . .infomercial style promises that yoga will sculpt this and mold that. This book brings much needed clarity to a confused universe. It's message is simple, time-honored, and authentic: your yoga journey begins and ends with you. This is a wonderful treasure of a book that will help you to see the light behind the seeming darkness of any situation that you may be in. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
There's a lot of good instruction on physics here in layman's terms, and nicely done too. However, his ventures into the metaphysical are deeply tainted by religious overtones and conclusions that are influenced by the Judeo-Christian mythos. His dependency upon literalised myth is disappointing. And, to top is all off, he actually uses the childish, politically-correct "he/she" reference to "God." (I nearly threw the book away, literally, but I perservered.)Further, his explorations about time were interesting, but they left me unconvinced. There seems to be several possible explanations of the phenomena he's discussing, but these were not adequately explored; perhaps he's unfamiliar with them.
2-0 out of 5 stars Lack of clarity
I wouldn't immediately dismiss this book as New Age hogwash, because any discussion of the mind is going to involve metaphysics.Wolf himself admits that consciousness is subjective, but hopes that a subjective model of mind can provide us with a better understanding of "reality".Quantum physics may help in this understanding, but there isn't much in this book that builds on existing theory.Wolf's only addition is proposing that through meditation the mind can travel through time.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Time Travel Book Ever!
You can't find a more fascinating and delightful book about the nature of time and reality than Fred Alan Wolf's YOGA OF TIME TRAVEL! Chapter One alone is more than worth the price of the book, as it describes how a yoga adept can overcome the five barriers to reaching the state of egoless mind... which is what Wolf explains one needs to do in order to travel through time without a time travel device. THE YOGA OF TIME TRAVEL shares a compelling vision of the nature of time travel by combining essential elements from yoga and physics with extraordinary clarity. Wolf provides readers with the perfect blend of warmth, wit, and scientific detail for readers to grasp such physical concepts as possibility waves, probability waves and qubits. THE YOGA OF TIME TRAVEL is so provocative that you'll want to read it more than once to comprehend the wonderful world of time travel!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every sanskrit newbie
What makes this sanskrit primer special is the easy with which you can read it. In contrast to the chippy style of other more "classical" books, you will realy enjoy reading this one - it gives you a lot of interesting background information about the language, which as I found, makes learning the stuff much easier.
2-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but very hard
Struggling with this book, it is anything but a book for beginners. Unless you are a god of linguistics or already know Sanskrit, probably better to start somewhere (anywhere) else. I will grant Coulson that - it is comprehensive...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for beginners
This is by far the best introductory book for those interested in studying Sanskrit seriously on their own. The book is not easy, but then, neither is Sanskrit. Coulson presents Sanskrit grammar clearly, and his exercises are extremely useful. Completing this book will make it possible for a student to read relatively simple Sanskrit texts with a dictionary on his or her own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to better sleep
I have had insomnia for years and have tried many different types of treatments like drugs, exercise, and diet. All have worked to varying degrees of success, but none like the yoga rountines offered in "Yoga Therapy for Overcoming Insomnia". Not only does this book offer a yoga practice for better sleep, but also a comprehensive medical backround of what insomnia is and how you can also make some simple lifestyle adjustments to sleep more soundly. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to get a better night's sleep and improve their quality of life.-Phil Romano

5-0 out of 5 stars Providing expert instruction on creating good sleep habits
Insomnia is the single most prevalent sleep disorder with an estimated ten percent of the American population having insomnia nightly. Yoga is a recognized exercise technique with established healing effects. Now Yoga has been applied to treating insomnia with a therapeutic regimen made accessible for the non-specialist general reader through the collaborative efforts of practicing primary care physician Peter Van Houten and Rich McCord, the worldwide director of Ananda Yoga, one of the largest schools of yoga in the United States today. Yoga Therapy For Overcoming Insomnia articulately discusses the types, causes, and treatments of insomnia, as well as providing expert instruction on creating good sleep habits. Extensive information is provided on how to use yoga postures as an aid in treating and preventing insomnia, along with useful conventional and alternative treatments to supplement the utilization of yoga in combating insomnia. Enhanced with a variety of additional "tips, techniques, and tools", Yoga Therapy For Overcoming Insomnia requires no prior knowledge of, or expertise with, yoga in order to quickly benefit from the advice and instruction provided. If you or a loved one is grappling with the problem of insomnia, whether chronic or intermittent, then give a careful reading to Yoga Therapy For Overcoming Insomnia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ganesh
As we all know How old is our Hindu Religeon ! If you see the Lord Ganesha or children say's elephant trunk god with a big belly..Do you relaize that The science was developed at that time as well as surgery too.Lord Shiva was a Doctor ( Master of Surgon) and he cloned the elephant head witha human body ? Do you believe it..Yes you have to be !

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and interesting for adults too
I bought this book for my niece and nephew, but before I gave it to them I read it too. It brought back the stories of Ganesha I had been told in childhood, and made me smile at them again. It may not have the pictures of "How Ganesha got his elephant head", which I bought for another child, but the it has more stories of this altogether charming lovable god.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful book
The Broken Tusk tells seventeen different stories of Ganesha in easy reader format for second grade and up. The stories also lend themselves well to the read-aloud format for younger children. Many of my old favorites are here including the ones about how Ganesha got his elephant head and about how he made a "pradakshina" around his parents, into a trip around the world. Some might find the versions of certain stories here to be different from what they know. That is understandable considering how many of these have been passed along strictly through oral tradition. There are also some rarer stories here including one borrowed from Buddhist folklore.Read more

Great book on meditation. It's great for beginners as well as for those who are more advanced. It provides in-depth information on various meditation techniques. Even if you have never entered a state of meditation before, you can do so using the book as a reference. The instructions in the book are step-by-step and very easy to comprehend. Besides meditation techniques it teaches you almost everything you need to know about the subject and related issues

Exploring Mediation by Susan G Shumsky - I almost finished with this book - and I began reading it 2 days ago and I simply couldn't abandoned it. I bought this book only because I wanted to order some more books on Amazon which wasn't planned at all. I though it was full of different meditation techniques - but how wrong my predicaments where. It's truly an amazing spiritual book full of inspiring material, one brilliant meditation technique, learning how to talk to your higher self, spirits and more. She also writes about Karma in a way which is different from what I have seen before- making it easy to understand this very complex matter in a new way. She has been working with spirituality for 36 years, and shows you how to avoid pitfalls and much much more. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Bhagavad Gita out there
I have read 3 different interpretations of the Holy Gita. Nothing comes close to this one. Radhakrishnan's commentary is simply phenomenal.

5-0 out of 5 stars He knew he was on the side of God, for God was at his side
The Bhagavadgita (the Lord's Song) is the heart of the great classical Indian Epic, the Mahabharata. The hero of this epic is given the choice, just before a great war, whether to take the offer of a mighty army- or to choose a single charioteer. Of course, that charioteer is Krishna (the avatar of the god Vishnu on earth.) Krishna will not be able to intervene supernaturally in the conflict, but only offer teaching and advice. The hero, Arjuna, chooses Krishna and his advice over the mighty army, for he knows that to be in accord with God's will is all that truly matters. Besides, he also realises that Vishnu only incarnates on our plane of existence when things have deteriorated far out of control and it is time for Him to once again restore peace, justice, and harmony to the world. In other words, he KNOWS that he will be on the side of God, for God will literally be at his side.5-0 out of 5 stars The most poetic of translations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this printing
I have this book in hardback (bought 30 years ago and it is the best translation) and wanted to get one for my son, but as I couldn't find anything but paperback I ordered this one. Big disappointment. The paper is cheap and coarse, the lettering is thick and indistinct, and there are no margins. Its visually difficult and unpleasant to read. This is published by the "Signet Press", I will be avoiding their books in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to your yoga library
If you are like me, you devour information on yoga.I've read both Power Yoga books by Beryl Bender Birch, the Yoga for beginner's and Power Yoga for beginner's series and all the Idiots/KISS/Dummies tomes. Also, those by Baron Baptiste & Rodney Yee, and Hatha Yoga Illustrated.Even with all of those in my collection, this book was very informative. The illustrations are great and I really enjoyed the more advanced versions of common asanas that it presents.
1-0 out of 5 stars Truly awful!
I can't understand all of the excellent reviews for this book. The poses shown are impossible for most people.I am relatively flexible (can do the splits easily, etc.), but I think I'd break in half if I tried to do these exercises. The average American soccer mom would run the other way if this was the first yoga book she picked up.
4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, but not for beginners
This book is more a reference book for the advanced yoga student, or students who learn yoga with instructors. Although it explains poses from easy to difficult, it is too confusing for a beginner who would need a more structured approach. It's a nice book to have in your library, but for learning yoga from scratch you need others. For beginners I recommend Richard Hittleman's "Yoga - 28-day exercise plan".

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best available books on "Hinduism"
Richard King has written a very provocative and very useful book.In Orientalism and Religion, King argues that the term "Hinduism" does not represent any single ancient "religion."Rather, Hinduism is a construct of western scholars who, upon encountering Indian culture, created a religion along the lines of their own Christian conceptions of what a religion ought to be.These scholars of the nineteenth century sought out Indian equivalents of their own Christian culture (i.e. sacred texts and authority figures), and from these (largely the Vedas and the Brahmin caste, respectively) created the "religion" of the Hindus, or "Hinduism." This construction of a "world religion" abetted the colonial exploitation of Indians.King effectively argues the point through examinations of the works of early "Orientalist" scholars and works of more recent scholars who exhibit the same "essentializing" tendencies.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, myth-smashing academic book
This is an excellent book that does much to dispel both the Eurocentric and mystifying Orientalist myths that have grown up around the relation of East and West.A truly impressive piece of post-colonial scholarship that refuses to cater to the prejudices of Hindu fundamentalists, convert Neo-Buddhists, or Euro-American boosters.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, pioneering work
This is a wonderful work of scholarship, which takes Said's 'Orientalism' to a new level, critiquing the weak points of Said's work and applying his insights to the Indian context. This book demonstrates very well how our modern notions of 'Hinduism' and 'Buddhism' have been contructed through a dialectical process of interaction between Western and Indian thinkers, and King uproots assumptions about certain scriptural sources and philosophies being the 'centre' or 'foundation' of these traditions. The author's style is also clear and engaging. I cannot recommend this book highly enough -- every student (and educated practioner) of Indian religions should read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A consistent translation
I haven't seen Tantra texts in sutra form except for excerpts in other books, so this Tantric text is more accessible for those who haven't received initiation into Tantra. This Yoga sutra falls under Kriya Tantra, the 4th Yana of the 9 Yanas.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, lucid and concise
I found this guide to the Yoga Sutra to be highly coherent, logical and easy to follow. The author's commentary "rings true" with my own experience as a meditator, and it is in practice that the worth of the translation is to be found.A particularly interesting implication of the translator is that the awakened state frees the meditator to leave behind the emotional baggage that obstructs a rational, clear view of life and the universe; to me, this is the Universe waking up to itself, a way for existence to know itself, a path for dropping the masks we wear through the sheer inertia of habitual living. This is the beginning of a logical, rational life, and meditation is the path that opens the way to the ideals that such thinkers as Zeno the Stoic conceived. This book is an invaluable resoure for anyone who seriously wishes to explore the fully-awakened life.If the student of meditation wishes to discover thebasis of logical, compassionate living, this book is a useful guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry and difficult to read
This was my first time reading The Yoga Sutras, and I struggled with it for weeks and finished it only with great effort. The writing was dry, confusing, and I was often pausing to look up words (both English and Sanskrit).I would only recommend this book if you are a scholar interested in reading every translation of the Yoga Sutras, or if you are a devoted friend of the author.I bought this book as a required text for a class. It turns out the author is a friend of the teacher who assigned our reading list. What a disappointment! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars M.A.S.T.E.R.L.Y
Not so many books became instant "classics", this is one of them. As many people, I've read a lot of books on Buddhism, knowing intuitively that there is something interesting there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Promises to be a Classic
This book is both a wonderful introduction to the psychological frameworks of Buddhism and Yoga (B&Y) and--most importantly--a practical guide to applying these systems to develop greater emotional maturity and overall wellbeing. According to Levine, the path to mature happiness developed in the ancient philosophies of B&Y requires calming one's conditioned beliefs and "passions" to allow greater control by the "anterior mind" (the "mind's eye" capable of observing, contemplating, and directing the mind). At the extreme, an "immature" individual is entirely conditioned by his or her culture, language, and biology--yielding the positive functions of anterior mind nonfunctional.Much like a little child, such a person's mental state is completely at the mercy of the external environment.He/she feels alright when a craving or ego desire is fed--but falls into tantrums and anguish whenever a craving or desire cannot be satisfied. Moreover, perception and interpretation of external events are distorted by the conditioned mind and its many unchecked passions (ego needs, cravings and attachments, fears and aversions, antipathies and resentments). The result is a life filled with suffering and illusion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro relating Basic Buddhism, Yoga, & certain psych's
pp. 213-4: "this book is a primer, an introduction to the most basic teachings of Buddhism and Yoga. It is introductory...My sense in presenting the teachings of Buddhism & Yoga was that the reader would be new to them, to their radical emphasis on self-transformation."It also has some comparisons with certain Western psychologies & concludes with a section on anger.Rather than a scholarly work, it is conversational & replete with stories, anecdotes, poems, etc.It is very basic & easy reading. The 1st section concerns Southern (often called Hinayana-which is derogatory) Buddhism (though the book includes some Zen stories). The 2nd section is on Hindu Yoga (e. g. Patanjali) & seems more detailed, including original drawings of mental processes. It's heavily Hatha Yoga, & ignores Raja Yoga entirely. The 3rd section is on cognitive & behavioral psychology-unlike many current works relating Eastern psychology to psychoanalysis, analytical psychology, etc.-even the bibliography ignores such works. The 4th section is on using these 3 to control anger. For a Buddhist view on anger, see Thubten Chodron's fine "Working with Anger."The most interesting items to me were: p. 77: Escher's poem "Transcending," yoga described as similar to mindfulness (& to me Zen), p. 132 table 24.1 & preceding pages mapping yoga angas to Buddha's 8-fold path, p. 151 "problem-solving therapy" though Deborah Tannen might categorize it as a masculine approach, & p. 177 the five stages of anger (most interestingly stage 4: "there is no anger" is lower than stage 5: "anger is the servant."I don't think these 2 are serial, but I agree with the order.Perhaps the most profound yet congruent observation was: p. 193: "The man who is angry at you or who yells at you, doesn't see you but sees his own conception of you."I think Mahayana Buddhists would even go farther & point out that we are all aggregates (which our author does indeed directly imply in his many examples) of innumerable influences.Still, there is the sticky issue of free will to consider. This is a fun book with some valuable insights, but as the author states, it is introductory.Nonetheless, it provides useful techniques (especially Hatha Yoga & anger control). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not kundalini light
This book is NOT kundalini for dummies. Gopi Krishna is so far beyond most of us intellectually that the book can be a difficult read at times; but so worth the effort for the information that it contains. He takes a well-grounded, well-rounded view and approach to the subject. He appeals to both the rational and spiritual sides of human nature, unlike many "experts". After all, we are not stictly spiritual beings; neither are we strictly rational. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants the whole picture of kundalini.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not everyone has this type of experience with Kundalini.
This may be a good book for explaining what can happen when an awakening occurs if the heart has not been fully opened. A kundalini awakening that is activated without a heart focus can be dangerous psychologically and physically. Awakening kundalini should not be attempted by those who do not desire complete peace, harmony, and love and are willing to let down ALL of the armament that we humans take up. This should not be attempted without preparation. An awakening will change you and you will need to be cared for differently than most humans. Use great care. When communion with the god within is approached with the heart, kunda
