3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow instructions?!
I'm amazed at all the people reviewing this who say the instructions are easy to follow.Part of the reason I was reading the reviews was to figure out if anyone was reading the instructions the same way I am.I've had to pass the book around to others and ask, "What do YOU think this says?"I LOVE this book and am very torn on how to rate it, because though I believe the yoga is very beneficial, the instructions just don't make sense.I never get very far into the book because I get so frustrated by the instructions. The first couple days it seems like you do the exercises then 1-6 and then the exercises again, but then day 3 it sounds like they want you to do 1-6 twice. And when I'm repeating something they describe earlier in the book and it tells me to do it 3 times, do they mean three times EXACTLY the way it's listed (often making for 6 whole stretches)? For a book that is so insistant on "THIS IS THE WAY YOU MUST DO THINGS" it could use some claification.

5-0 out of 5 stars 28 days to renewal
Illustrated with over 500 photographs. Hittleman tells you exactly what to do each day. In 28 days you will be physically renewed.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO MORE PAIN IN 28 DAYS! PHYSICAL THERAPY IN A BOOK.
I suffered chronic back pain for two years. I suffered until a good friend handed me this book and said, "try this."

5-0 out of 5 stars YogaNap Works!
I love this book!A friend recommended it to me, because of mystressful schedule, and it has helped me so much.I started incorporating a couple of Kristen's exercises in my day and the tension in my neck is starting to go away.It is amazing how I feel immediate benefits when I stop running around for ONE minute and simply bend over and breathe.I do yoga on a regular basis, but these exercises have helped me to blend more peace and relaxation into my work day.I find myself doing half dog on my desk, twisting when I get in my car, and taking slow beautiful breaths in traffic. These fun and simple exercises really help me go through my day with more awareness and joy.
5-0 out of 5 stars As Easy As Pie...
I've come to the realization that with age and work comes stress...mind-numbing, balled-up-muscles, backaches, headaches...stress. Desperate to find relief in any fashion I came across "YogaNap." The author, Kirsten Rentz, has done a great job at explaining positions in true "Yoga for Idiots" fashion (aka: simply). The illustrations (softly done in blues, and greens) go one step further in making the whole process as easy as pie (mmmmm, pie). Anyway, the poses are a perfect way to end a long (mind-numbing, balled-up-muscles, backaches, headaches) stressful kind of day. Thanks Kirsten!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy yoga rest
The perfect gift for the busy professional who needs to slow down, the stressed-out student, and every person who has avoided yoga due to fear of hot rooms and sore muscles, YogaNap is a fun and unintimidating introduction to the oft-ignored practice of restorative yoga.

Editorial Review

Despite skeptical jibes from his well-meaning friends, Stephen Cope set off for a four-month yoga retreat in rural Massachusetts. Ten years later, he is still there. A psychotherapist left in the lurch after a long-term relationship, Cope was experiencing the same deep questioning of life that he had witnessed so often in his practice. His self-prescribed antidote was to pursue a life of contemplation and inner discovery that he had felt drawn to for some time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top 5 books I've ever read.
I rank Cope's work right up there with Prisoners of Childhood by Alice Miller. This book shed light on some of my own experience andgave voice to spiritual yearnings of my own. This is a yoga of transformation. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Accessible
I so enjoyed reading this book. I very much felt that this book is written for real people who are skeptical/curious about yoga philosophy.Cope takes you through step by step how and why yoga works using real language not hippie/bliss out language seen in other yoga books. Also, for someone who is familiar with psychotherapy and wanting to add a spiritual dimension to their self-care this book is invaluable in merging the two lines of thinking. This book was very influential to me - I plan to refer to it much as I continue to develop my yoga practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Deep and Practical.A Life Changing Book !
Yoga and the Quest for the True Self is definitely one of the best (if not the best) and most useful books I've ever read. It truly speaks to developing a mature, real life approach to spirituality.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, but cautiously recommended
Several years back, this was one of the first few translations of the Bhagavad Gita that I read. Compared to other books I found the language of translation very simple to comprehend and I also loved the layout of the book. This book was certainly inspiring as any translation of Gita would be. However a word of caution!
5-0 out of 5 stars bhagwat gita as it is
This book is really great with indepth description of bhagwat gita. This book also says about conditions before mahabharat and I found that description very helpfull understanding mahabharat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Representation of the Tradition
In 1967 I was honored to type the second chapter of the Swami's Gita manuscript just as it was being edited by Prof. Howard Wheeler (Hayagriva). Since then I've been a student of the Gita, particularly Prabhupada's. For someone new to the Gita, his translation is excellent. Prabhupada communicates the passion, philosophy, enjoyment, and enlightenment available in the Vishnu (Vaishnava) culture. Although wise, elderly, and saintly, Prabhupada humbly consults centuries old commentaries to offer his readers the proper perspectives. For someone who knows the tradition, it is a joy to read Prabhupada's translation, because he communicates the millenia old principles with clarity. To understand the ancient, classical, and modern Vedantic (Hindu) culture one should investigate it from within the tradition. For example, one of the Upanisads says, "A great soul is enlightened by the Gita discussions through expressing affection for the Lord and the guru (not by external, detached study and research)." Prabhupada is most definitely a guru who can enlighten the reader; it is also easy to have affection for him. An advanced reader may be happy that Prabhupada's comments clarify the many themes or threads in the Gita. Some scholars find the various threads difficult to follow and reconcile. Many people will appreciate that in a world where industrial and modern cultures have created a violent rift between humanity and nature, Krishna's exposition provides a breath of fresh air. The Vedantic perspective is wonderfully communicated by Satish Kumar (in Ranchor Prime's Vedic Ecology): "Hindus say 'Om shanti, shanti, shanti' ('peace, peace, peace') before every prayer. The first 'shanti' means peace with nature, ecological peace; the second means peace in society, between human beings, communities, nations and peoples; the third means shanti within oneself, spiritual peace." Therefore, Christians, scientists, and politicians should apply the Gita's principles in order to regain active respect for nature. Krishna's teachings are down to earth and practical. Along with principles and philosophy, Krishna emphasizes action as one of His central themes. He urges resistance to materialism by using the sword of active knowledge (jnana-asin), rather than weapons of steel. He describes a yati (spiritual struggler), who is similar to an Islamic mujahid (jihadist). Yet the yati is a college professor to the elementary school mujahid. Moslems should study Prabhupada's Gita to understand how to use the sword of knowledge instead of steel. Above all, every reader may benefit from the spiritual enjoyment that Krishna teaches in His yoga treatise, the Gita. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Skip the Intro
The Upanishads are beautiful, timeless, and powerful. This translation seems to do them justice, and I have nothing critical to say about that. The included verses have been thoughtfully chosen and are truly classic treasures.
3-0 out of 5 stars not quite what I had in mind
This book is perhaps a decent introduction to the subject matter, however the number af actual Hindu upanishads would fill a book as thick as the bible. There are a few short upanishad-y anecdotes in this very thin collection. The intro is longer than most of the upanishads within, and gives a decent history.Serious scholars should look for a more voluminous collection. This would be great for the high school student in a comparative religion class.

5-0 out of 5 stars 44 Page Introduction Alone Worth the Cost
For those seeking the eternal, this book's introduction is comfortable and familiar. It is filled with threads of ancient wisdom and clearly tries to tie together the universal element's of the "razor's edge". I recommend the introduction alone to anyone searching for answers to the eternal questions. I am writing this because my Mom inspired (and still inspires) me to do my best and read good books. There is great truth and solace in the words of Saint Teresa: "No sisters, no;our Lord expects works of us". With the foundation most seeking out these texts already posess, I believe this translation of the Upanishads will always bring courage and contentment. I take this one book with me whenever I feel doubtful or uninspired. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another good one from Bryan!
As far as home yoga workouts go, this is a great one. It is a great workout, but keeps with the spirit of yoga. I am a Bryan Kest fan - so this was another addition of his to my collection. He has a great, no pressure style, and it great about reminding us to breath...something that can disappear fast during some of the more challeging sections.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, only one complaint:
This a a great CD and booklet to have in your collection if you are an intermediate to advanced student.I really like to use it together with my practice at the studio.I quite like Bryan Kest's style of teaching because he is honest about what you have to do to achieve the routine. He's very motivating for me, despite what others have said in their reviews.I wish he'd come out with more of these sets, and I'd probably buy them all if they were at this advanced level.Bryan Kest does not have a typically soothing, meditative voice, yet he brings home the meaning behind the asana: keep the focus on your breath, even during the tough poses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great class if you can work out at home!
I am a stay at home mom that does not always have the time to make it to my yoga class. I have all of Bryan Kest's DVD's and wanted a longer class...this is it! It makes me feel as if I am in class not having to watch a DVD. Kest has a unique style very different from other yoga instructors, this style is one I embrace. New places are cooking and I look forward to using this everyday. If you are ready for the next level, I highly recommend this CD! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Book for the Yoga Sutras
I've read the Yoga Sutras of Patajali by Sri Swami Satchidananda and found that book to be a much more detailed description of sutras. This book is very brief, which may a good introduction but I've found it to be much less useful. If you are looking for a deep understanding of the sutras, I'd recommend a book with more content.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali....translated by Alistair Shearer
This is an enlightening translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eastern Wisdom
Great translation of the timeless and pricelss wisdom of the Yoga Sutra.Yoga seems to be very popular in the physical senses of society today, however the Yoga Sutras speak of the holism of yoga and not just the posture and breathing that yoga is thought of in the popular circles.Great book and application of it will allow you to find peace and tranquility by detaching from the chaotic mind(ego). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Boring CD
When I found this book & CD on Amazon I was excited because I attend yoga classes at my gym, but I was really seeking to have some "quiet time" with God in the process of all that wonderful stretching.I read through the book & was excited to put in the cd.When I did, I was dissapointed.I was expecting nice music or the narrator reading some of the scripture mentioned in the book, etc.Instead there was NO music, No scripture, and not an adequate amount of time to let you get a complete stretch or concentrate on something other than moving your arm to the next position.Bottom line, if you're looking for a good audio yoga CD that focuses on God & streching with some nice relaxing music - this is not for you. BUT if all you are looking for is a Christian yoga book with very basic stretches & a couple of scripture references - this book/CD is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to yoga, Christian or otherwise
Why learn yoga from an Episcopal priest?Rev. Roth may not be Hindu guru, but she manages to explain 25 Hatha Yoga postures (asanas), helped with clear line drawings by Susan John Mangam, in a way that even complete beginners will understand.Plus, as a lapsed Episcopalian, I was amused by the idea of learning yoga from an Episcopal priest.Rev. Roth offers many ideas about incorporating God and worship into the postures, which may be helpful to practicing Christians. As a practicing Scientologist, however, I am waiting for the day that someone writes a Scientologist yoga book incorporating the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard. As our great founder and leader taught us, we can only reach enlightenment through auditing, so I don't know how to reconcile the truth of Scientology with the practices of yoga, although in "The Hymn of Asia", L. Ron Hubbard did imply he was the Maitreya, or future Buddha, so I'm sure a reconciliation is possible.I certainly hope so, because I have benefited enormously from yoga, almost as much as I have benefited from Scientology.Only 10 more Intensives and $53,200 to go to Clear!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers
My two year old loves this book and quickly learned all the poses. The book has a few basic poses which are renamed for the animal they mimic. For example, "standing forward bend" is renamed "monkey" because the pose resembles a monkey bending over. The illustrations and text are simple and the back of the book has photos of actual children doing the poses along with some parental tips. It's a great book and I highly recommend it. It's also a great gift idea for a young child whose mom practices yoga.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable but thought provoking
Unbelievable I say not as a skeptic, but as a true rational person. This same skepticism opens up other horizons in one's thinking - is this all true? Yogi Paramahamsa, the author, renders in this charming and lucid storytelling, facts he came across in his life - like his Master being able to 'know' that they will have guests arriving in the middle of the night; another yogi predicting the author's arrival and telling him of what he did miles away and many more such incidents.

This book is full of stories, or perhaps lies might be a better word, because nowhere is it indicated that the stories are not the truth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for possibilities of Self Awareness and Spiritual insight
A great introduction to saints, saintly lifestyle, Yogic siddhis, miracles, Krishna Consciousness, etc is easily found in the engaging book of Sri Paramahansa Yogananda - Autobiography of a Yogi . It has given inspiration to do spiritual labour to me whenever I glance at its devotional pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man's Eternal Quest Book
I can't say enough about this book and the powerful message relayed by Paramahansa Yogananda.Although Paramahansa is no longer alive, when I read his books and hear his message about God and living for God I cannot help but to feel that I am in master's presence and enlightened by God and his powerful all mighty light.Just as he tells his devotees at his talks and speeches that took place during his early years in America, I feel like if he's alive now and telling me exactly what he told them and that is that as he spoke to his disciples, he could see God blessing each and every one of them.My life is changing each day.I am little by little experiencing small miracles in my life and I know that those are coming from God because of my new found devotion for spiritual growth and knowledge about the almighty Christ.I hope you too choose this path of self realization through master's works and live your life blessed as I am living mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Priceless Spiritual Gem!
This volume of Yogananda's collected talks and lectures should be on the shelf of every student of Eastern Wisdom, along with its two sequels, no matter which tradition they follow, and even if they follow no specific tradition at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Universe Unveiled
Another masterful book by the Yogi.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for new mothers and yogis
This books is a great complement to the yoga pregnancy books. Once you have had your baby you can get back to your practice or start a new yoga practice. The book presents 4 classes for different stages of the baby's growth or mother's ability to move. In general, it is also a good introduction to yoga with basic introductory chapters. I am an expectant mother and yoga teacher trainee. I am planning on using this material as soon as I get certified and start teaching my prenatal and postnatal classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for mom
I loved this book for postpartum yoga - it has a special section for cesarean moms, which was the reason I bought it.It has series of gradually increasing challenge, which I also like. However, I found it WAY too hard to incorporate my baby at first.Having a c section, it was hard enough to get in and out of the poses. Also, my newbron needs lots of attention and its hard to relax and focus on myself.Maybe this will change with time. Also, in terms of the baby interactions segments of each series, Baby Om was a little demanding of its babies - these sections included a full body massage and several exercise movements all in one sequence, and encouraged the mom to "keep trying" when baby resisted - my baby did not like this.I prefer Itsy Bitsy Yoga for baby yoga, as it gives very useful tips (such as going slow, stopping if baby is unhappy, etc) and offers different poses based on small developmental steps.A great book for moms, especially c section moms, but not the best for baby in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete
I found this book to be very complete, with details on body positioning/benefits/etc. for each pose/exercise for you and your baby as well as many variations to make it work for you and your baby. They also included some information on baby massage and a special workout for c-section recovery. Its worth reading a few times before you dive into a workout to choose what you want to do and how you want to do it, rather than read while doing the workout and getting bogged down in all the options. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Yoganandaji.
Little did I realise that after reading Autobiography of a yogi my life would have taken the turn that it did.Words cannot express my gratitude and thanks to Yoganandaji. Scientific Healing Affirmations is a great book to those who want to learn and feel the power of God's love. Yoganandaji tells us that we are all made divine beings and we can reach our true potential in life by focusing within and releasing our true beauty, strength, love and power. This book used properly will take you there, I'm just beginning to realise the power of having a strong will and conviction. Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable techniques, simply expressed
Way back in the 1920's long before Shaki Gawain and other proponents of affirmations and visualisation techniques spiritual Master Yogananda told us in simple poweful language how to use affirmations effectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars Affirmations Work
Affirmations seem New Agey but Paramhansa Yogananda was talking of this in the 20's.This little book is powerfully insightful. The spiritual Master shares with us exactly how it works.

Editorial Review

Hinduism is such a vast, complex, and exotic topic that to boil it down to a few hundred pages--and make it fun--must be the work of a true avatar, in this case Linda Johnsen. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who expected it to be fun?
It's not easy to introduce a completely alien topic in a way that's fun, easy to follow, and instructive. Linda Johnsen's Complete Idiot's Guide to Hinduism has managed to do all of it. This is not to say that Hinduism is a lark, easily absorbed or easily understood and remembered. It isn't. But the book makes it seem that much closer to being so.
3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, yet Biased.
The Complete Idiots Guide to Hinduism is a book that provides a wealth of knowledge but from a completely biased veiwpoint.Linda Johnsen obviously knows a lot about the "Eternal Religion" and imparts that knowledge in an easy to understand manner.I love how much is packed into this book from the history of the religion and it's philosophical views to the myths and stories that bring it to life.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview, if a bit idealized
Being somewhat unusual as a Buddhist who believes in a godlike force, I began to explore Hinduism to see how it - the "birth religion" of Buddhism - dealt with such ideas.I picked up "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hinduism" after looking through it a few times at book stores.Like many of the CIG series, its title can be misleading. The book does a good job of touching on a wide range of subjects in Hinduism, such as the major deities, the different factions, a scaled-down history of Hinduism, the fundamental concepts, and an all-too-brief discourse on where Hinduism may be headed in the modern era.The writing is light and the author's love of the subject (as well as ice cream), is glowingly evident.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring book for humanity!
This book revels the unlimited potential of human evolution. It shows that the current human development is at its infancy and it is very possible to achieve immortality with the human body.
5-0 out of 5 stars I recommend it
I have enjoyed this book. It speaks about the ancient lore of Yoga. It is only like the tip of the iceberg of a great knowledge. Those who like to know deeply about Yoga will like it.
