5-0 out of 5 stars Completely Eliminating Fear to Fulfill Your Life
The Divine words of Paramahansa Yogananda delivers the one message that will set you free from fear and its debilitating effects in your life. That message is to recognize and connect fully to your divine source, to God, and how this omniscient presence is within you, at all times. It is within your heart and soul. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Stand unshaken amidst the crash of breaking worlds"...
The editors at Self-Realization Fellowship have again produced a beautifully inspiring and motivating volume, drawing on some of the great yoga master's inimitable expressions of eternal truth.Drawing partly from talks published elsewhere (e.g., Man's Eternal Quest and The Divine Romance), this volume also includes life-empowering quotes that would otherwise have to be culled from the years of Yogananda's Self-Realization Lessons - plus a couple of other essays not elsewhere in print. In the latter category is a brilliant piece on faith, fearlessness, and the uprooting of unconscious fears.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but
The standard Sanskrit Dictionary for Sanskrit students is theMonier-William dictionary ... However, packing it around takes the entireback pack. For early years of study, the Apte dictionary is an adequatevolume to pack around. However, you'll still need a Monier-William athome.

4-0 out of 5 stars a concise lexicon, with usable entries
Apte's dictionary is one of the handiest sanskrit lexicon's around. While nothing can beat Monier-Williams' for thoroughness, Apte's brief entries are highly usable. He has restricted himself to listing only the more frequent uses of words and roots.most entries do list multipledefinitions, as well as examples of usage culled from Sanskrit literature. This is a good portable dictionary. It served me quite well for the firsttwo years of Sanskrit study. As with all books published in India, thereare occassional pages where it is difficult to read the print--don'tcomplain, this is part of the Sanskrit experience. It is good preparationfor reading manuscripts. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a journalist and Iyengar Yoga Teacher who uses yoga for people with back problems, I was excited to see this new book by a physician and someone who claims to have studied with BKS Iyengar. The reality was a disappointment for a number of reasons.
5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ
Whether you have back pain or not, this book is written by two Doctors that know their stuff. Not only it is it one of the most simply written but it also goes into medical detail that would cost you lots. It is presented in a very logical way and easy to follow while getting to the very heart of possible back pain and the exact way to treat it. Even if you are, for some reason, anti-Yoga, this book shows stretches that are directly related to having a healthy and strong back.I would add to the title that the book can also prevent back problems, and this can be as IMPORTANT as ever. PREVENTION as opposed to treating is a blessing and if you have that situation, read this book. Amazingly simple for those unfamiliar to Yoga. Again, A GREAT READ

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
An excellent book, neatly divided into two parts, the first part describing succinctly yoga and back pain and the second part suggesting poses for nine different diagnoses.Having suffered severe crippling leg pains that my general practioner finally diagnosed as relating to my back, I sought relief.Relief in the Stretch opened up a whole new world for me.It suggested Iyengar yoga, a form of yoga that focuses on the accuracy of poses.I started seeing an Iyengar yoga teacher and concurrently reading and rereading this book.I learn that yoga is the right thing for chronic pain.It does indeed "increase flexibility, strengthening muscles and bones, increasing range of motion, sharpening focus, heightening self-awareness, and producing calm."There are numerous helpful medical tidbits, such as when one muscles flexes another muscle relaxes: "every time the biceps contracts . . . its opposite, the triceps . . . must relax." When I tighten my abdominal muscles I relax the muscles in my back, the muscles that are partly the cause of my pain.I learned that a patient has symptoms, i.e. sharp pains in my leg in my case, but that the doctor needs signs todiagnose the cause, i.e. the films from an MRI. Nine different types of back pain are discussed (including Herniated Discs, Arthritis, Sacroliac Joint Derangement, Pirformis Syndrome and Weight Control) with yoga poses for each.Everytime I reread a chapter I discover something new.If you have back problems, this is not just a book to buy, read and shelve in your library.Rather it is also a book that will be a continuing source of information as you work at obtaining long-term relief through yoga. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This may be the answer !!!
This may be the answer to many questions in the domain of yoga. After reviewing many books and articles, I could say that Asana is a kind of exercise that involves stretching and strengthening your body in a relaxed way with easy breathing. But Yoga is entirely different. Asana is a small part of Hatha Yoga which is a small part of the YOGA.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for EVERYONE!
This is the GREATEST yoga book!!!I wouldn't buy another.I'm a beginner and the illustrations (TONS!) are amazing. The book also gives you explanations on all positions and groups the exercises for the area that you want to focus on.The sessions range from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours!!!! EXCELLENT BUY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise yet comprehensive resource...
I received this book today, and was already inspired to try one of the recommended routines.Essential Yoga aims to be an interactive guide to Hatha yoga.As such, it consists of detailed instructions on over a hundred yoga poses, with sections on breathing and meditation as well.My favorite parts of the book are the recommended routines, which are either sequences geared towards specific activities:yoga for golfers, for knee pain, for runners, etc; or for times of day; or sequences for routine practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book is definately one of the best additions to my library.Dr. Ashby gives a great analysis of the most complex knowledge system known to humankind. Not only does he know what he is talking about, but he is able to transform the wisdom of the ancients into the limited framework of the English language. Very powerful. If one is seeking enlightenment, this book definately provides a step in the right direction.

This book is a classic in a multiplicity of fields; incl.,Kemetic (Egyptian) research, Melanin studies, Yoga techniques,Symbology, Comparative Religions, Esoteric materialism (scientifictechnology behind machinery), and others to numerous to mention.Dr. Muata Ashby is a first rate academician and he is a Masterpractitioner of the Art to boot! This is the most cosmopolitan workyou can find on esoteric/occultic syncretism. Every page is loadedwith diagrams, or sublime research on the esoteric connection aroundthe world of the African Diaspora.Take for example page 8:""THE VEIL OF IGNORANCE- As stated in the ancient Egyptiantext, 'The Book of Coming Forth by Day

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for all yogis
Lilias's book is an excellent resource for understanding yoga but also to better understand your own practice. Lilias shares her knowledge of yoga in a holistic manner, covering all of the major topics necessary to gain a true understanding. She communicates the philosophy and practice through her own experiences so that it is not intimidating and easy to understand for a yogi at any level. It is a truly wonderful book and Lilias's enthusiasm for yoga is felt in every word you will read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking research
I've worked and taught in the field of peacebuilding for 25 years and consider this book the single most important research that has been done in the field. Varshney breaks new ground in conducting indepth research into why some cities in India into fell into violence and some did not during times of high national tension. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
Varshney had the opportunity to examine the Hindu-Muslim divide in India using fresh glasses, and he has failed at it. His book is a litany of hackneyed generalizations and simplistic arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work of excellence
Varshneys research is particulary impressive because of the concise research method that he upholds. I am pleased that he has studied both peaceful and violent cities--giving his research model a basis for comparison. I have purchased20 copies of Ethnic Conflict and Civic life and have circulated the work among my friends.Varshney's work gives us hope for world peace. this is the work of utter genius.very impressive research. particulary interesting was his intricate methodology of janwars in conflict. I highly recomment this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is one of my favorite books on Hindu spirituality. It is easy to follow but meaty enough to give you plenty to think about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jnana Yoga
For those who reject standard religious dogma but still recognize the certain spirituality of mankind, this book is for you. Best comprehensive explanation of the Hindu Faith I have ever read! Written for easy comprehension by the western mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rare view into Wisdom by a Master
Swami Vivekananda, a major (if not the main) disciple of the famous Ramakrishna, has done both Hinduism and comparative religion a great service by writing several works that address the main types of transformational yoga.Interestingly, Hinduism has constructed a wonderful model that differentiates among and between these seemingly divergent paths up the spiritual mountain (or paths to God for Theists). These include: Karma Yoga (addressing action) and Bhakti Yoga (of devotion) included in one volume; Raja Yoga (of mind, but addressing more psychic development); and Jnana Yoga (of wisdom). The latter is more difficult, IMHO, to find out about.Religions generally specialize in one of these four with additional elements (sometimes only in subsets such as clerics or monks) from some of the other ones.Jnana or Gnani appears to be among the rarest. Thus, having read this book is a great coup in understanding the higher philosophies and theological approaches to Omneity or spiritual development. In Tibetan Buddhism, for example, it would be applicable to Dzogchen and Mahamudra as opposed to the more normal or pervasive Vajrayana practices.IMHO, Jnana (and its equivalents in other religions) is the most profound of teachings.Vivekananda was obviously a Master and has presented a wonderful exposition on this esoteric subject. We are privileged to have the opportunity to read and study it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An ideal introductory "how to" guide for the novice.
All elements of yoga practice both spiritual and physical are brought to play in a title packed with black and white photos illustrating techniques and positions. From technical discussions of muscles used in these positions to step-by-step directions, Yoga: Mastering the Basics is packed with clear information any beginner will appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best yoga books I've seen
As a beginning yoga student, I've consulted several books to support my practice and this is one of the best I've found. This book is slightly oversized and printed on thick, glossy paper so it feels really nice to use.The photos, drawings and text are clear and concise and the photos show modifications for different abilities. The book features two asana sequences and chapters on pranayama, relaxation and meditation. The chapter that sets this book apart has sections on problem areas such as hips, hamstrings, abdomen and back. The chapter shows you which poses in the asana sequences help in these areas and then shows additional poses. This is the only book I would recommend to the yoga beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book and Reference Guide
I checked this book out at the library and enjoyed it so much that I had to buy it for reference. It's packed with good information on all aspects of meditation, including myths, history, a wide variety of practicies and excercises for the beginner as well as the more experienced meditator. I recommend it especially for the beginner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much extraneous clutter for this beginner
There's something paradoxical about the idea of an "Idiot's Guide to Meditation."Describing the outward forms of meditation is easybut describing the subjective experience is harder, as is actually doing the meditating. There's real discipline involved in developing mental focus through meditation.Somehow, with all the jumping around from one topic to another in this book, that seemed to get lost in the mix.2-0 out of 5 stars Little disappointed after reading
There are many books on meditation, and I bought this one and Meditation by Sri Chinmoy. Main reason was that all the reviews were excellent. But Chinmoy's book is superior in every aspect. This book is more a dictionary or overview on meditation and technique than useful practitioners manual. Plus it contains misunderstanding of some basic classification of Yoga styles and separating one and the same thing in different groups. To give you easily understandable example if Biologist gave you a list of life forms that goes like: Animals, Plants, Carrots, Bacteria, ... you would question his knowledge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to Hinduism
Hinduism has a special place among the world's major religions, being of great antiquity and being, until recent times, an ethnic or racial religion, like Judaism, Sikhism or Shinto. In the last century it has spread its teachings to the West and in doing so has fragmented and branched into an even more complex variety, so that, as the author of this book says, we must now talk of 'Hinduisms', in the plural. So the writing of a very short introduction that will do justice to this subject is a tall order.Kim Knott succeeds splendidly.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction into Hinduism

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent place to start moving
For too long yoga instruction has ignored the needs of larger woman.I have been in yoga classes where the question "what do I do with my boobs?" was greeted with a puzzled look from my teacher.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Something for us big gals!
This is so wonderful, easy to understand, and helpful - And it's about time!I feel like most books, dvds, et. al are for skinny people already in shape, especially since that's what is featured in most of them.Thank you Ms. Garcia for such a wonderful book that makes me feel beautiful and will help me become more healthy.I long for a pilates book such as this one because the two dvds I have are clearly not for large gals. This book has wonderful instructions and insight into the challenges of the plus-sized person.I am so happy I bought this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
There are already some reviews about this book. All of those reviews are 5-starred.My review is somewhat redundant. However, after owning the book for almost two years, I feel compelled to write a short 5-star review.
5-0 out of 5 stars Specific and specifically useful
This text is unparalleled and invaluable. The text offers the Gita in Sanskrit, both in Devanagari script and in transliterated English. The translation is displayed step by step, with full diclensional information and notes. This text delivers exactly what it advertises: a precise and detailed translation of the Bhagavad Gita.

5-0 out of 5 stars white swan
Lady dressed in white is such a beauty for sore eyes. Beginning from the 39th page and continuing through the 739th page, this hydrojen bomb simply blows your mind out.First sanskrit sentence, then transliteration and translation and vocabulary and grammatical notes.Congratulations.I deplore the fact that there is not a Sanskrit Chair in any Turkish University.Maybe some people thinks Sanskrit learning is futile and superfluous.I do not share their ideas.I one more time thank Amazon and the creators of this fabulous work. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting introduction to Buddhism.
This book is useful to anyone interested in knowing more about Buddhism. Unfortunately Byrom's translation does not seem to me to be the best. There are no verse numbers, and in comparing this to Easwaran's translation, I could see that the paragraphs do not always correspond to a new verse. Also Byrom removed the name Mara (Buddhist equivalent of Satan), replacing it usually with 'desire'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic, Fantastically Simple
Actual content aside, this version of the Dhammapada is sturdy and doesn't feel "cheap."The pages are nice and thick, the cover is beautiful without being loud or overly interesting, and the small size make it convenient to carry in whatever pocket you have to spare.
4-0 out of 5 stars the Dhammapada
This particular Dhammapada is very nice to read,

5-0 out of 5 stars Best In Show 100 years and counting
As another reviewer put it, this is quite simply the only definitive Sanskrit-English dictionary. The monumental feat of scholarship required to compile this resource is staggering to imagine. It has completely answered every query for which I have consulted it and deserves 5 stars for this fact alone.
2-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary with an agenda.
Useful as a quick reference because the entries are primarily in Roman script with diacritics, rather than Devanagari. Some of the entries, specifically those connected with scientific views, are outdated as they are subject to the scientific understanding of the time.5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
The Monier-Williams Sanskrit Dictionary is one of the heaviest books I own. If you are working in any field related to Indolology or Indian linguistics, you need it - it is the best by far. In every entry you feel that Monier-Williams spoke Sanskrit and loved India - a wonderful book, you can spend hours just browsing in it. The Monier-William and Platt's Urdu, Classical Hindi and English Dictionary represent the apex of British Indological Scholarship. A digital edition would be extremely useful... ... Read more
