5-0 out of 5 stars Hatha Yoga Bible!
This book is informative, well written and has the excact amount of theory/practicle information needed!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Approach To Anatomy
I purchased this book to assist in preparation for a small group presentation in a Yoga class at DePaul University. The course text (Donna Farhi's excellent "Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit") emphasized the need to understand bodies "to the cellular level" in order to fully appreciate what Yoga does for the body, and provided an introduction to each bodily system in relation to Yoga."Anatomy of Hatha Yoga" took that introduction to a level I never dreamed possible, and provided most, if not all of the information needed for our small group presentation on the skeletal system, especially in the context of Yoga. It's also extremely well written -- and yes, exhaustive and comprehensive -- but what comes through is the author's love of anatomy and Yoga. Some sections took more than one reading, but the challenge was as good for the brain as Yoga is for the body.I will recommend that this book be added to the course material, either as a required text or a reserve resource for students.Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars better have some knowledge or some time
My title says it all. The book is good, but it is not suitable for a novice. I was looking for books to recommend to new individuals to yoga, so I bought this book. It is good to me, but I have been teaching for 7 years. If you are new lookign for base knowledge, look elsewhere. If you have been practicing yoga for awhile, give it a try! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
I have scoliosis and this book has been a tremendous resource in understanding and caring for my condition. The book is a good start and it eventually got me interested in taking some yoga classes and exploring some of the different practices. I'm so glad I found this book; yoga has been a positive force in my life for some time now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real yoga, really good advice, well written
Lots of back pain books provide exercises, but this one takes them directly from the Iyenger Yoga method; Iyenger revolutionized Yoga from the 1960's to the present by applying contemporary knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the traditional and spiritual aspects of yoga.Teachers trained and certified in Iyenger Yoga are a 'cut' above others from my lengthy experience with Yoga practice. That said, dr. Schatz uses Iyenger's methods (Iyenger also wrote the intro) to design a comprehensive program for all types of back and neck problems; she also provides accurate and clear illustrations of the spine structure and related anatomy. The photos are very clear and easy to understand as are the instructions of asanas and restorative poses..The book is the right length, size and format. Many back problems can be treated. This book offers programs for many of them; also included is a self-analysis of one's own current posture and alignment. This is no quick fix book; the programs she recommends may take a couple of years to 'work' but it's definitely worth it to live a more vigorous, pain reduced or pain free life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by former physiology instructor and past back pain sufferer!
This is my favorite book for addressing back pain issues. It presents a great foundation in the basic anatomy of the back and then uses this information to develop the concepts that help people understand why back and neck pain occur and how to correct it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and complete collection of expert yoga information
I am a complete beginner to yoga...less than 6 months of practice and I'm 64 years old... Even with an excellent yoga teacher and a once a week class, I felt I needed some type of guide so I could do yoga at home.Videos went too fast for me and often I'd be unable to see the TV from the floor.. This book was absolutely perfect....as yogarequires a lot of practice in order to become more limber and competent. After taking many different yoga books out of the library and this being one of them, I felt I had to own it because this was the only book where I could find a specific pose, read exactly what to do (and what not to do), see beautiful photographs of someone doing the pose and adapt any of the poses to my own level by adding my own props.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this book!!
The book is full of illustrations. So its very easy to follow. Best of all it works. I've saved more than $300 on visits to the physician by following this book. Believe me its worth the investment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook on Yoga you will find
If you are looking to find out more of what Yoga is really about, not just the poses, which are a very small part of Yoga, then buy and read this book. This book gives you the background of Yoga, how to find a teacher and the basics of creating a practice among other things. The sutras are also included. The writer, TKV Desikachar, is the son of T Krishnamacharya who revitalized Yoga for the world and brought it to all people, women as well, as it was traditionally taught only to men.Krishnamacharya was the teacher of BKS Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois, both who left in their twenties and teach Yoga for young people to all.Krishnamacharya modified Yoga for the individual up to his death at the age of 100 in 1989 and his son, TKV Desikachar, the author, is his only student to learn from him up to his death.Come find out what Yoga is really about and all the tools available to you as a student or teacher!

5-0 out of 5 stars The heart of yoga
Excellent for beginners who are looking into yoga and would like to understand more about yoga.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all around yoga resource
I own a lot of books on yoga and this is one of my favorite introductions. What makes it particularly valuable is that it explains how to construct a practice. This allows the reader to intelligently use other resources and link his or her yoga practice to overaching physical, psychological and spiritual principles.

To reap the holistic benefits of any mind-body exercise, students must relax and stay focused throughout their class. That's tough to do when the instructor seems to be--or actually is--speaking a foreign language, or when the physical movements seem equally foreign to the body. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MindBody Fitness for Dummies
This book wins the"fitness relevance" award for being virtually the first to apolitically and respectfully describe the major mindful exercise modalities that exist in the West today - in one concise volume. There are hundreds of yoga, tai chi, Pilates, martial arts and derivative publications today each extolling the papal and fitness-related virtues of their own species of mind-body exercise. Therese has put together a utilitarian compendium of the classical and contemporary forms, yes in somewhat abstract form, but always with skillful instruction and quite meaningful resources. This is a wonderfully organized reference for those desiring a wide-angle and descriptive view of the major players in mind-body exercise modalities. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed
I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

Knees bees. Whatever. Just got this book a week ago, so as far as helping knees per se, don't know, but most impressed with it. These few yoga exercises limbers up the entire hip, leg area. It identifies which side is tighter. She even rightly points out to go barefoot often to strengthen feet that have been too conditioned to shoes.

Along with affirming the other reviews on this book, I would like to add that I have recently begun teaching yoga and have found this book to be an excellent tool for developing my class formats and information sharing. There is a wealth of information, presented in clearly stated, understandable and comprehensive text, that I can quickly commit to memory to share with my students, or jot down in an outline to reference during class instruction.Having purchased and read volumes of books on yoga, this is the first I have come across that has been helpful in that regard.Kripalu is a beautiful form of yoga that brings the true essence of the practice to life.

Editorial Review

As the physical practice of yoga has become popular in the West, many of the spiritual aspects have been lost. There is much more to yoga than reducing stress, increasing flexibility, looking great, and remaining youthful. Yoga is an ancient, integrated system designed to educate and unite body, mind, and spirit and teach the practitioner how to be present both on and off the mat.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful yoga reference manual!
Since I first began practicing yoga several years ago, I've read a ton of different books on the subject, and so far, this is one of my favorites.Author and yogi Donna Farhi takes some of the best elements from other works and combines them into an extremely readable, practical format. For example, she begins by reviewing the eight-limbed path of yoga and then focusing on a discussion of the "ten living principles" - basically, these are moral and spiritual guidelines from yogic philosophy. She then moves on to the asana limb, or the practice of yoga postures, and introduces seven "moving principles" (breathe, yield, radiate, center, support, align, engage) to assist the reader in gaining a greater body awareness within the poses.Farhi also reviews anatomical information in a way that is much more simple and more accessible than in The Anatomy of Yoga (although this is also a wonderful book).
5-0 out of 5 stars this book is thorough!
I have to say Donna Farhi really has done her work. This book has alot of wonderful tips. While I didn't follow them all I found alot of good ideas to enhance my practice. Unfortunately, I left this book on a plane and now need to purchase another. It is one I definitely want to own to refer to every once in awhile for fresh inspiration!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
As a student and teacher of this ancient practice, I found this book invaluable. The beautiful photos and readable text make a lovely and educational partnership. As it did for me, this book can become a reliable resource of inspiration and instruction. I highly recomend it!!!!---Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Itsy Bitsy your the best
I got the book after taking the actual Itsy Bitsy Yoga class with my son the first time.We really enjoy it & it does help with his digestive system.I highly recommend the class & book to anyone who has children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book to Bond with Baby...
I love yoga and was ecstatic to see such a book.I was even more ecstatic to find that the library in my area had it.The poses are wonderful for kids.Unfortunately, I was unable to try some of the beginning ones because my daughter was already in the middle age group of the book, but I read through the whole book and found it to be very informative. My daughter loves doing active things so this is great for us to do together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I love this book.I started using it when my baby was 4 weeks old. After trying to do "mommy baby" yoga (using Baby Om) I decided it was much easier to do yoga with my baby separately from my own practice, though there is some overlap.Realistically, you have to stop a million times usually to wipe spit up, nurse, burp, etc, and for me it worked better to have all my attention on my baby. This book gives simple exercises, and great tips to make the experience enjoyable for baby. My baby has gotten more and more used to it the more we do it, and she is very calm, relaxed and peaceful when we do it now.I also like this book because it gives new exercises based on lots of developmental steps (head holding, almost sitting, etc) instead of just yoga for a baby - we all know that a 4 week old is much different from a 4 month old!I highly recommend this and plan to use it until my baby is 2! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book - works for me
I'm a golfer that has frequently had some degree of lower back pain.Suffered a severe lower back strain four months ago.Bought the book and started the routine after that.It has made a big difference for me.My back feels better than it has in years.I strongly recommend the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD WHIPPING
This is an excellent book for dealing with this common problem afflicting so many people but it doesn't explain why Pilate ordered Jesus to be whipped. That is definitely not the way to relieve back pain!

3-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtfulm, safe process, but does it work????
I felt that Dr. Vad's approach was safe and logical. He has you perform easy basic exercises for some time, and then graduate to more strenuous exercises.I must say, though, as someone is in pretty fair physical condition to begin with, I felt the exercises were too basic, and not at all challenging. There didn't seem to be an abundance of info on treatments or back pain causes either.I guess though, the real proof is, "Did it work? Did following the program letter for letter improve my back pain?"And, in my case, which of course is very individual, after following the program to the "T" for 8 weeks, it really did nothing me.Decent book, but I'm still looking for the magic bullet. ...
